In this chapter, God formally enters into covenant with Israel. Moses reads all the words of the (foundational) covenant; and the people affirm their acceptance and obedience to it. After being handed over to the will of the Jewish leaders, Jesus is led out to be crucified. Being offered some type of analgesic, He refused and was hung to experience the full pain of crucifixion. The next morning after illegal trial of Jesus, the Sanhedrin gathered to officially render judgment against Him. Judas was remorseful because of the outcome and went to return the money. The leaders rejected this gesture from Judas; and so, he threw the money in the temple and hung himself. When Jesus arrived before Pilate, the leaders brought many accusations against Him. Pilate was amused at how Jesus remained quiet throughout the barrage of accusations against Him. Knowing that the leaders brought Jesus because of envy, Pilate tried to have Jesus released. He was not successful in his efforts, so he had Jesus scourged and crucified. The Roman soldiers then took Jesus and mocked Him as the King of the Jews and afterwards led Him out to be crucified.

After three hours of intense prayer, Jesus woke His disciples, because Judas had come with a band of soldiers. A brief skirmish took place, but Jesus prevented any escalation and allowed Himself to be arrested. He is then led to the home of the high priest Caiaphas, where s late night (illegal) pre-trial is convened. Since Jesus refused to defend Himself, the high priest placed Him under oath and Jesus affirmed that He was indeed the Messiah and the Son of God. Because of His claim of divinity, they judged Him guilty of blasphemy and deserving of death. But watching from afar was Peter, who was accused of being with Jesus. Peter denied knowing Jesus three times and was shocked into remembrance of Jesus saying to him that he would do so when a rooster crowed.

After Jesus concluded His prophetic words about the Rapture and His Second Coming, He began to prepare for His final Passover, when He would be crucified. He reminded His disciples of this and was anointed by Mary in preparation for burial. After this, Judas went and betrayed Jesus to the religious leaders for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus acquired a place to celebrated the Passover and reveals that one of His disciples would betray Him. Judas then departs and goes to bring the chief priests. Jesus continued the Passover celebration with the remaining eleven, giving new meanings to specific parts of the observance. After the Passover, they went to Gethsemane, where Jesus was overcome with great spiritual anxiety. And asking His disciples to pray with Him, He also prayed. Finally, He yields to God’s will as Judas returns with soldiers.

Chapter 25 continues Jesus’s warning on being prepared (for the Rapture). He gives two parables to illustrate things concerning this event. First, in the parable of the virgins, the idea is simply to be prepared; but the idea of the talents is a warning to be faithful. Finally, at the end of the chapter, Jesus tells what will happen to the Gentile world (in judgment) when He returns. Those Gentiles who are saved will enter the Kingdom - their salvation evidenced by the way they treated the Jews during the Tribulation. The unsaved will be executed and sent to Hell. These too are evidenced by how they treated the Jews in the Tribulation.

After Jesus’s denunciation of the leaders and warning of Jerusalem’s destruction, His disciples seek to understand His prophetic words about the destruction of the temple and the future setting up of the kingdom. Jesus began by giving them a general overview of increasing despair as the world moved towards the time of the Tribulation and then provided them a sign to signify when the kingdom would be set up. However, He continued to teach and warn them to be prepared of another event that will take place without a sign - the Rapture, which will catch many unprepared. Chapter 22 continues with the overall theme of testing. But before, this Jesus continued His parabolic teaching to the leaders indicating how that their rejection of Him will lead to the kingdom being offered to others and their destruction. After this, differing groups came to Jesus to question Him to entrap or find reasons to condemn Him. The Pharisees and the Herodians tried to stir up trouble with the common people or the Romans. The Sadducees challenged Him concerning the resurrection of the dead. The lawyer questioned Him on the greatest law of the Mosaic Covenant. Answering all of their questions, He shut their mouths and proved His wisdom, knowledge and Messianic authority. The Lamb indeed was spotless. Jesus concluded with His own question about the true nature/Person of the Messiah to the which they were unable to answer.

Jesus now enters into Jerusalem, presenting Himself as the rightful King of the Jews. Fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah, He enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The next day Jesus entered the temple and for the second time cleansed it. During these last days of Jesus before His crucifixion, He is tested by the religious leaders, fulfilling Moses instructions of testing the lamb (Exodus 12). Continuing with the principle of “the last shall be first and the first, last”, Jesus continued teaching His disciples in a parable. The point He was making was that, He would appoint those to serve Him throughout the church age and would reward them just as He rewarded the twelve apostles. As He headed toward Jerusalem, again He reminded them of His upcoming death and resurrection. On their way, James and John request superior positions in the kingdom and Jesus corrects their understanding of what it means to be great in the kingdom. Greatness is attained by suffering. True greatness is to serve and not be served. The problem with the disciples concerning this is that they were blind. Hence, Matthew’s recording of Jesus healing of the two blind men.

Leaving Galilee, Jesus now heads toward Jerusalem where He will be crucified and raised from the dead. Along the way, He is questioned about divorce by the pharisees and provides valuable teachings on the priority and permanence of marriage. Even though His words are difficult to receive, He continues by teaching that His disciples should always be like children. Leaving there, Jesus is approached by a wealthy man, desiring to be assured that he is qualified to be in the kingdom. Jesus’ words caused this one great sorrow and questions from His own disciples as to who can be saved. He informed them that this can only come by the enablement of God. And finally, He encouraged His disciples that even though for now they were suffering for His name, in the future kingdom, they would be richly rewarded.

Continuing from the idea of “heirs of the kingdom”, chapter 18 deals with the children of the kingdom. That is, all who would be in the “new” kingdom should be humble as children and be careful of how they treat the least in the new kingdom (church). After Peter’s great confession of Jesus dual nature as Messiah and God, Jesus began to reveal His upcoming death and resurrection. Then because of Peter’s unwillingness to accept this, Jesus taught them on the nature of discipleship - always doing the Father’s will. After returning from the region of the Gentiles, Jesus is once again confronted by the religious leaders, asking for a messianic sign. After revealing the mystery kingdom AND since the rejection of Jesus as the nation’s Messiah and King, Jesus “withdraws” and begins to teach and train His disciples for their future work in the ministry. Chapter 12 begins a pivotal moment in the ministry of Jesus. It is the national rejection of Jesus as Messiah by the leaders. And because of this, Jesus withdraws His offer as Messiah to the nation and begins to speak of a new “mystery” kingdom”. So, Israel will not receive the kingdom at this time, but instead, a kingdom that was not foretold will now be birthed. Jesus reveals the nature of this “new mystery kingdom” (the church) by way of speaking in parables. The Parable of the Sower becomes the foundation to understanding this new kingdom.

In the previous section of chapter 12, we saw where the pharisees were rejecting Jesus because of what He was doing on the Sabbath and that they had determined to kill Him. In this last section, a mute, demon-possessed man is brought to Jesus and He heals him. This sets of great wondering of whether of not Jesus was truly the messiah as He said. In this section of chapter 12, we are confronted with Jesus teachings and works on the Sabbath day. After Jesus sent His disciples to minister in Galilee, some disciples of Jon cam to Him, asking if He truly was the Messiah (being sent by John the Baptist). The final words of Jesus in chapter 9 was to pray that God would send workers into the harvest; and this is exactly what Jesus does in choosing twelve men to send them into the harvest of Israel. In this, He tells them not to carry additional provisions for themselves, but to rely of God working through those who hear them to provide for their needs. And He also warns them of persecution because of their preaching Jesus as Messiah. He teaches them not to be afraid of men who seek to do them harm because of their message, but rest assured of the Fathers love and concern for them. So, they should publicly proclaim Him before all. And finally, as to those who hear them and receive their message and support their ministry, He states that God will reward them for their service.

As the large crowds followed Jesus, wandering if He were the Messiah who would bring about the kingdom, Jesus led them to a mountain and began to teach them. The temptations of Jesus. Jesus is led into a deserted place by God to undergo a specific period of testing. He will be tested infall three categories of sin (lust of the flesh, eyes and pride), but will not yield to Satan. His victory will prove that He alone indeed is the true Son of God and set the example for us in how to have victory over temptations.

John the Baptist begins his ministry of preparing a people to receive the Messiah when He comes by baptizing. Although a simple prophet/preacher, he is powerful and draws many from far and wide to his ministry. Upon noticing a delegation of religious leaders, John admonished them to repent upon the threat of being cast into Hell by the Messiah. Later, Jesus came to John to be baptized. But John thought this to be unacceptable. However, after Jesus explained it to John, he baptized Him. When Jesus arose from the waters of baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and God spoke from heaven of His pleasure in Him.

Matthew chapter 2 continues dealing with the early childhood of Jesus with the visitation of the Babylonian magi. However, the star that once led them has disappeared; so, they go to the naturally expected birth of a king, Jerusalem. Herod questions his scribes and priests if there is such a prophecy. They affirm this, quoting Malachi. Herod calls the magi and gives them this information and asks them to report back once they find the Messiah-child. The star reappears and guides the magi to Joseph’s house where they worship Him and bring Him gifts. They then depart a different way from which they came. This enraged Herod and he sends to kill all babies 2 years and under in Bethlehem. God also warns Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because Herod will attempt to kill Him. After Herod dies, God calls Joseph to return to Israel and raise Jesus in Nazareth.

As the people are at the base of Mount Sinai, God begins to speak to them His covenantal laws. It is here that we have what is called the Ten Commandments. These become foundational upon which God will set forth the rest (603) of His commandments in the Law of Moses (613 total commandments). But in the midst of God’s great display upon the mountain, the people become very afraid and asks Moses to relay God’s words to them. Finally, the chapter ends with an emphasis in God’s earlier prohibition against idolatry and with preliminary observations concerning the altar to be built for their sacrifices.

After three months since the Israelites left Egypt, they finally arrive at Mount Sinai, where God had first spoken to Moses. God instructs Moses to offer them a unique covenantal relationship to Him; and they enthusiastically agree. He continues to tell Moses to tell the people to prepare to encounter Him in three days at the foot of the mountain. On the third day, God comes down from heaven in great power of presence and makes Himself known in the sight of all the people. It was a sight that we can only imagine that they saw.

While encamped at Rephidim, Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brings his wife and two sons back to him after hearing of the great things that God has done for His people. He greets him and enjoys a meal as Moses tells him in greater details of all the things that God has done. The next day he observes how Moses judged the disputes between all the people. Fearing this would surely wear Moses out, he advised him to appoint judges for the smaller matters and for him to judge the issues that the lesser judges could not determine. Moses listened to the counsel of his father-in-law and finally bid him farewell. A wise man will listen to godly counsel.

After leaving the wilderness of Sin, God led Israel to Rephidim, where they had no water. As usual, the people complained against Moses; and Moses cried out to God. God instructed Moses to strike the rock and it would give water for the nation. While they were encamped in Rephidim, they were attacked by Amalek. Moses instructed Joshua to go to battle with him. Joshua defeated Amalek by the power of God. So, God provided substance for His people and victory in battle.

After leaving Elim on the way toward Mt. Sinai, the people exhaust their food supply and begin to complain - again. God tells Moses to inform the people that He will provide bread for them and also give them meat to eat. So, God gives them manna (bread) from heaven and commands the people to take only as much as they needed on a daily basis. Also, He instructs them to take twice as much on the sixth day, because now they will begin to observe the Sabbath. Then He tells Moses to instruct Aaron to commemorate the event by saving some of the manna in remembrance of God’s provision for forty years.

After God led the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground and drowned the Egyptians when they attempted to follow, Moses led them in a song of praise for God’s great deliverance. He sang of God’s power, majesty, glory and faithfulness to deliver His chosen people. Not many days from this awesome event, God tested the people by leading them to a place where the water was unsuitable to drink. The people responded by complaining. God set forth this event as a principle - obedience brings a blessing; disobedience will bring chastisement. Nevertheless, this incident of Israel’s responding to hardship with murmuring and complaining becomes the norm for the nation.

As the children of Israel departed Egypt, pharaoh and the Egyptians began to have a change of heart. They regretted allowing the Hebrews to leave and wanted to re-enslave them. God knew this would be the case and He hardened pharaoh’s heart, telling Moses to change Israel’s travel directions to appear as if they were lost and confused. God would use this to cause pharaoh to chase after them. Moses obeyed and the Egyptians pursued as God said. God protected Israel through the cloud. Then God commanded Moses to divide the Red Sea (Sea of Reeds) which allowed Israel to traverse on dry ground. When the Egyptians tried to do so, God drowned them.

After giving the Israelites instructions on how to observe the Passover and Unleavened Bread, Moses also commanded the nation to set apart all the firstborn of man and animals to God. After instructing Moses on how the Israelites are to observe the Passover, God continues instructing Moses to tell them to observe an additional ritual immediately following - the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This was a seven day observance where no leavened bread was to be eaten under threat of divine judgment. It signified holy (sinless) living before God in response to His great deliverance (Passover). Namely, living as God prescribes (in holiness) in response to Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself on the cross. We can do nothing to save ourselves. Before God strikes Egypt with His last great plague, He commands Moses to instruct the Israelites to perform a specific custom that will allow death to pass them by - the Passover. After God strikes the land of Egypt with hail, destroying the early harvest of barley and flax, He sends Moses to pharaoh once again. This time He threatens Egypt with a plague of locusts that will completely destroy Egypt’s remaining wheat harvest. Pharaoh’s counselors then urge him to free the Hebrew slaves because Egypt can no longer endure these blows from the Hebrew’s God. Pharaoh tries to bargain with Moses to no avail. God then completely devastates Egypt’s remaining agriculture with locusts. After this God strikes Egypt with petrifying darkness. And pharaoh, no longer desiring a contest with Moses’ God, threatens to kill him if Moses should see his face again.

After the plague of frogs and swarms of insects, God began to place a distinction between Goshen, where the Israelites dwelled and the rest of Egypt. When Moses goes to the king of Egypt the second time, God gives him a sign miracle to perform and when that is not heeded he turns the waters of Egypt into blood. Pharaoh hardens his heart and refuses to release the Hebrew slaves. So, God sends Moses again. This time warning of a plague of frogs. The frogs then cover Egypt and pharaoh calls for Moses to get rid of them, promising to let the people go. He reneges on his promise and God sends swarms of gnats to plague Egypt. Moses returns to pharaoh again to let the people go with the threat of a swarm of insects. This swarm forces pharaoh to compromise, saying the slaves could worship their God but just not too far away from Egypt. Nevertheless, pharaoh was deceitful and lied again.

Continuing from chapter 6, God remedies Moses’ complaint of not being eloquent by sending Aaron as a spokesperson (prophet) for him. In his second appearance before pharaoh, Aaron’s (Moses) rod is turned into a serpent; but pharaoh’s magicians are able to accomplish the same miracle. And this working of demonic miracles by the magicians of pharaoh is significant in understanding both the power and limitation of Satan himself. After the magicians’ serpent-rods are swallowed up, Moses is again sent to pharaoh; but this time he strikes the waters of the Nile River and everything dies. When the king makes the Hebrew slaves gather their own straw to make bricks, they blame Moses for their predicament. Moses cries out to God and God reassures him that indeed He will deliver the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. He tells him that the time for Him to fulfill the covenant that He made with their Jewish ancestors has come and He is now going to act. After Moses went to the elders of Israel to tell them that he has been divinely commissioned by their God to deliver them from slavery, he goes to pharaoh. He confidently tells the king that God commands him to release Israel, but is strongly rejected. The king accuses the Israelites of laziness and adds to their burdens by taking away the straw that was formerly given to them and commanding them to get their own. This results in the Hebrew slaves inability to meet their daily quota of bricks; and the Hebrew foremen are beaten. They then complain to pharaoh, but he does not change his mind. Exodus 4 continues Moses’ objections to God’s call with three final issues: the people may not believe him, his lack of eloquence and his overall reluctance. God overcomes each of these complaints and comforts Moses by sending his brother Aaron along with him to speak for him. Aaron finds Moses and is reunited with him; and they both return to the elders of Israel and tell them that God has appeared to Moses and is going to deliver Israel from Egyptian bondage. The people see and believe the signs that God gave Moses to perform and worship in expectant deliverance from slavery.

So now Moses is 80 years old, and the eager, self-assured deliverer is now an humble shepherd. It is at this time God appears to him in a burning bush and calls him to be the instrument of the deliverance of the sons of Israel. Moses, who at one time was so ready to deliver the Israelites, offers objection after objection as to why God should not use him. God assures Moses that He indeed has chosen him and will use him to bring the Israelites out of the slavery of Egypt.

After many years of oppression, God brings forth a baby boy by the name of Moses, who He will use to deliver Israel from Egyptian slavery. However, even though Moses will be aware of his uniqueness, it will not be because of his believing in his own qualifications and abilities that God will deliver the descendants of Jacob. Many years have passed since Jacob and his people went down into Egypt under the gentle care of Joseph. Both Jacob and Joseph are dead and a new dynasty of kings have risen over Egypt. And this family of kings have no appreciation or remembrance of how Joseph saved Egypt from starvation. So, the new kings of Egypt began to employ measures to suppress and oppress the Hebrew people, enslaving them and making their lives bitter with harsh treatment in an atmosphere of death.

After Jacob tells his twelve sons what will become of their tribal families, he closes his eyes in death. Joseph has his body embalmed and asks the pharaoh for permission to bury his father in the Land of Canaan. He is accompanied by a great entourage from Egypt and they mourn many days the death of Jacob. In time, Joseph dies and makes his brothers to promise to take his remains to the Land of Canaan, when the Lord brings the tribal family of Israel back to the Land of Promise.

After Jacob blesses Joseph and his two sons (Genesis 48), he calls all of his sons to his bed to give a prophetic word concerning their tribal families in the future. He emphasizes how that one day the tribe of Judah and a descendant from Judah will eclipse even Joseph to reign over the entire world. But, for the near future, Joseph’s tribal family (Ephraim) will have the preeminence. Finally, he charges them all to bury him in the ancestral tomb, and the light goes out from Jacob’s eyes and he dies.

Jacob falls sick and Joseph goes to his father so that he may bless him and his two sons before he dies. Jacob encourages them and tells them that God will be with them, just as He was with him. He adopts Joseph’s two sons in place of his own - Reuben and Simeon. Jacob then proceeds to bless Joseph’s two sons, giving the birthright to the younger son Ephraim over Manasseh, the eldest. Joseph objects but is over-ruled by his father Jacob. After blessing them, Jacob reveals to Joseph that he too will be returned back to the Land of Canaan.

After Joseph prepares his brothers to meet Pharaoh, they are set before him. He inquires of their occupation; and they tell him that they are shepherds. The pharaoh welcomes them into Egypt and tells Josephs to set some of them as caretakers of his own livestock. Joseph then brings his father Jacob before the king; and Jacob blesses pharaoh - twice. The famine continues in Egypt forcing the Egyptians to use all their monies, livestock, lands and even themselves as payment for food and provisions. Joseph acquires all of these thing on behalf of the pharaoh and makes a perpetual agreement with the people. But, while Egypt is ravished, the Israelites in Goshen are blessed. And before Jacob dies, he makes Joseph swear to bury him in the land of his fathers.

After Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, he tells them to return home and bring his father back to Egypt. There are still five years of famine left; so, if they all come to Egypt, there, Joseph could provide for them. This same gracious invitation is extended from the Pharaoh, as well. And the brothers return to Canaan to tell their father Jacob all that has transpired in Egypt and how that Joseph is still alive. Jacob agrees to go to his son; but he is hesitant. So, God reassures him of the sojourn. He enters Goshen of Egypt, and after over twenty years of separation sees Joseph again.

After the brothers returned to Joseph again for the third time, in tears he revealed that he indeed was their brother. They were taken aback and dumbfounded at his declaration. But, he commanded them to return to Canaan and bring his father and all of their little ones to him in Egypt so that he could provide for them for the remaining five years of famine. Joseph’s brothers went down to Egypt a second time to buy food; but this time they took their youngest brother. Remember, Jacob was extremely reluctant to send his youngest son. But Joseph had strictly warned them that if they did not bring him, then they would not be able to buy any more grain. So, Judah became surety for Benjamin. They went down to Egypt and ate a meal with Joseph. After the meal, Joseph had their sacks filled with food; but he also had his silver cup placed in Benjamin’s sack. He then commanded his servant to overtake the brothers at the edge of town and seize them with the cup and bring them back. All of this was done as Joseph’s third and final test of his brothers. In trying to save Benjamin, Judah made the most heartfelt plea.

The famine persisted in the Land of Canaan; and Jacob’s tribe was pressed sore on account of it. So, he reluctantly allowed his son Benjamin to accompany his other sons back to Egypt to buy grain for the family, placing him in Judah’s care. Once they arrived in Egypt, Joseph informed his house steward to invite them to dine at his house. The brothers panicked, believing this was Joseph’s way to seize them. However, their fears were comforted and they dined with Joseph. During this festive meal, Joseph tested his brothers for the second time.

Not only did the famine strike Egypt, but also the Land of Canaan. So, Jacob sent ten of his sons to Egypt to buy grain. When they arrived, they found they needed to purchase from the governor of Egypt, who was their brother unbeknownst to them. Joseph accused them of being spies and demanded that their brother Benjamin be brought to him as proof that they were not. After imprisoning them for three days, he sent them back with full provisions of grain; but he kept Simeon imprisoned as security that the brothers would return with Benjamin. After they finally made it back to Canaan, they told their father Jacob all that happened. Jacob mourned, because he believed that he now had also lost his son Simeon along with Joseph. The brothers discovered that all of their money was back in their sacks and believed that they were suffering divine retribution because of what they had done to their brother Joseph.

Two years after Joseph interpreted the cupbearer and baker’s dream, he was left in prison. Then God gives Pharaoh two dreams that his magicians and interpreters could not interpret. The cupbearer finally remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh how Joseph interpreted dreams. Pharaoh sent for Joseph and told him his dreams. Joseph interpreted the dreams and proceeded to advise Pharaoh. The king was so impressed that he elevated Joseph to 2nd in authority over the land of Egypt. Joseph administered the land during the seven years of plenty and distributed grain during the years of famine.

After he was sold into slavery, Joseph became a slave in Potiphar’s household, where he noticed how that God made everything that Joseph did to prosper - a great benefit to Potiphar. So, he made him the chief steward over all that was his. Then Potiphar’s wife began trying to seduce Joseph into an immoral relationship, but he refused. Spurned, she became angry and falsely accused him of attempted rape. Potiphar reacted to her allegations by sentencing Joseph to prison. In time, the chief jailer set Joseph over the affairs and inmates of the prison. The pharaoh was displeased with two of his servants, the cupbearer and the baker and sent them to prison. They both had dreams and Joseph interpreted their dreams. The cupbearer would be restored to his post, but the baker would be executed. Joseph therefore asked the cupbearer to plead his case before the pharaoh and get him released. But, the cupbearer forgot him.

Genesis 38 affirms the wisdom of God in preparing to send the Jewish people into Egypt to maintain their religious and ethnic purity by noting how Judah had began to intermarry with the Canaanites. So, chapter 39 continues with God’s preparation, returning the attention back to Joseph. Joseph is sold asa a slave to Potiphar, the captain of pharaoh’s guard. And he is set over Potiphar’s entire household. But Potiphar’s wife is attracted to Joseph and tries to get him to sleep with her. Joseph refuses and she falsely accuses him of attempted rape. She tells her husband this lie and he sends Joseph to prison.

After Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers, Judah departed from the family clan and dwelled in Adullam and married a Canaanite woman. They had three sons, who clearly seemed to have adopted the ways of their pagan mother; and two of them are killed by God. Judah tried to save the last son, refused to give him in marriage to his daughter-in-law Tamar, because he feared this was the cause of the deaths of his two eldest sons. Tamar deceived Judah and elicited him into an immoral act (prostitution) in order to obtain legitimate children by him. Judah discovered that she was pregnant and judged that she should be executed. But, before being put to death, Tamar produced evidence that she was indeed pregnant by Judah himself.

Genesis 36 ends with the “toldot” (what had became of) Esau. And his genealogical history is outlined to indicate his material prosperity and greatness. But there is an even greater spiritual significance of these things, showing how that the world experiences prosperity when God’s people learn to patiently wait on Him. In chapter 37 the narrative moved back to Jacob, focussing on his son Joseph. Joseph was the favored son of Jacob who was envied by his brothers and sold into slavery. However, God is sovereignly behind the scenes, working in all of these events in order to preserve Israel.

When Jacob’s two sons, Simeon and Levi, killed all the men of Shechem, he became fearful that his small tribe would be attacked in vengeance from the surrounding Canaanites. God commanded him to return to Bethel; but before he could leave, he had to purge idolatry from his household and peoples. When he arrived in Bethel, he erected an altar to the Lord. Later, he moved to Hebron to the land of his father Isaac. Isaac dies at 180 years old, buried by both Esau and Jacob. Now, God had given him the twelve foundational sons for the tribes of Israel. So, what becomes of Esau? Chapter 36 answers this question with one final look at Esau (reflecting on his descendants).

After the rape of Dinah, Simeon and Levi, her brothers, took revenge and killed all the men of Shechem. Jacob reprimanded his two sons for their violent acts and feared the destruction of his clans by vengeful Gentile neighbors. God once again rescued Jacob and told him to return to Bethel, where God appeared to him when he fled from his brother Esau. Jacob departed with divine protection, entered Bethel and set up an altar. While journeying onward, his wife Rachel died in childbirth, giving Jacob his twelfth and final son. She named him Benoni, but Jacob renamed him Benjamin. Also, around this time Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son slept with his father’s concubine/wife. Finally, Jacob returned to his father Isaac’s house; and Isaac died at 180 years old, peacefully buried by both his sons, Esau and Jacob.

After Jacob encounters his brother Esau in peace, Esau returns to Mt. Stir bu Jacob settles outside of Shechem. In time, Jacob’s daughter Leah decides to socially interact with the daughters of the Canaanite city-state of Shechem. She is discovered by Shechem, the prince of the town and is raped. Shechem asks his father Hamor to get her for him as a wife. So, Hamor proposes with Jacob and his angry sons an arrangement for marriage offering citizenship to Jacob’s people. Dinah’s brothers deceive him with the additional requirement that Hamor’s people be circumsized. Hamor agrees and then goes and convinces his people to agree. On the third day of the inflammation and pain caused by the circumcision, Simeon and Levi, brothers of Dinah, enter the city and kill all the males and take all the property and women. Jacob rebukes his sons; but they exclaim they were justified because their sister was raped.

After wrestling with God and receiving a new name to reflect his changed character, Jacob proceeded towards the Land of Promise. His faith was strengthened; but he was still fearful of meeting his brother Esau. So, once again he devised a plan of escape for his family by separating them into three groups. When he finally met Esau, he discovered, indeed, that God had given his brother a change of heart. They both wept. Esau offered to escort Jacob to Mt. Seir; but Jacob craftily and kindly refused. He later settled in Succoth and later moved into Shechem - the Promised Land!

After Laban departed from Jacob and returned home, Jacob’s thoughts focussed on his most pressing concern - meeting his brother Esau. Twenty years ago when Jacob left his father’s home to go to Haran, he was also fleeing the anger of his brother Esau, who had sworn to kill him because of a perceived “stolen blessing”. Soon, Jacob will meet his brother. What will become of him and his household? So, he devised a plan to appease his brother; but still he was fearful. But upon arriving there he found that he was not alone, because God had encamped along with him to reassure Jacob of His protection. Jacob sent his family to the other side and there he wrestled with God till the morning. God gave Jacob what he desired, a blessing, and changes his name to Israel.

Jacob has been working for Laban by keeping his flock for six years now - that’s after having done this for fourteen years previously as a dowry for his two daughters. Laban has been very deceitful and has not dealt fairly with him. Plus, Jacob noticed that Laban and his sons’ countenance towards him has become quite toxic. So, he decides to secretly flee with all that he has and return to his father’s house. He flees, but Rachel secretly takes her father’s household idols. Laban discovers that Jacob has left and hotly pursues him. God encounters Laban in a dream and warns him not to trouble Jacob. Laban meets with him accuses Jacob of being deceptive and that he has stolen his household god. Jacob permits Laban to search his household; and after finding nothing, he hotly rebukes Laban. They then make a covenant and Laban returns home.

After Jacob has arrived in Haran, he meets Rachel his uncle’s daughter at a well. He tells her who he is and she takes him to her father’s house. Jacob after seven years marries Leah and Rachel, Laban’s daughters. Jacob loves Rachel, but is not so loving of Leah. So, God graciously opens her womb and she bears him four sons in the hope that Jacob would love her too. In this chapter we see where the two women are engaging in a race to see who can have the most children. But also, there is a note of Rachel’s spiritual lacking. God finally gives her a son and Jacob wants to go back home. However, Laban is unwilling to let Jacob leave because he has noticed how Jacob’s God has prospered him on account of Jacob. So, he bargains with Jacob once again - only to deceive him again. But God over-rules Laban’s actions against Jacob and greatly increases his wealth.

After receiving a visitation by God in a dream, Jacob's spirit is revived and he journeys onward to Haran. When he arrives, he meets some shepherds at a well who tell him that Rachel, his uncle's daughter, is headed to the same place. He introduces himself to Rachel; and she thereby introduces Jacob to her father Laban. Laban welcomes Jacob. After working for him for a short period, Jacob contracts with Laban to marry his younger daughter Rachel. Laban deceives Jacob and gives him the eldest daughter Leah. Jacob then has to negotiate once again a bridal price for Rachel. But, all is not well in his household. Leah is unloved. So, God favors her because Jacob does not and gives her four sons.

After Jacob deceives his father into blessing him with the birthright, his brother Esau plans to kill him after his father dies. Their mother Rebekah learns of this and makes another plan that will send Jacob away to take a wife from her brother's house. Isaac openly and rightly blesses Jacob with the Abrahamic blessing and sends him to his uncle Laban's house to get a wife. On his long journey there, no doubt Jacob is full of fear and apprehension. So, on the way, God appears to him in a dream to establish the Abrahamic covenant and reassure him of His continued presence. Although Jacob is clearly not the man God wants him to be, what awaits him is a long period of discipline and transformation.

In this chapter we return our attention back to Jacob. Isaac fears that his death may be near, so he determines to bless his favorite son Esau, although he knows this is contrary to the will of God. Rebekah, his wife who's favorite son is Jacob, plots to deceive Isaac and obtain the blessing of the birthright for him. The plot is successful and Jacob deceives Isaac into giving him the blessing, only with Esau coming in afterwards to find out he has lost his opportunity. He is furious with his brother Jacob and determines to kill him when his father dies. So, in all of this mess, Rebekah concocts another plan. This time to try to save the life of her son Jacob. So, she complains to her husband Isaac that she would be grieved if Jacob married one of the Hittite women as Esau had done, prompting him to send Jacob to her homeland in Haran to find a wife there.

God now establishes the promises that He made with Abraham with his son Isaac. But, although Isaac does indeed inherit the promises, he must receive them by faith. That is, Isaac too must learn to trust God, just as his father did. So we see similar tests of Isaac just as Abraham. And we see similar faith. True faith is tested; true faith grows under temptation.

In John 6 Jesus feeds the 5,000 men supernaturally from 2 fish and 5 loaves. This great sign moves the people to try to forcibly make Him king. He leaves and later crosses the Sea of Galilee. The following day some of those same people seek Him to repeat the miracle but receive correction from Jesus because of their motives and instruction on what food really to seek Him for. This leads to a wonderful point in John 6:29 concerning salvation.

Genesis chapter 25 opens with Abraham taking a second wife, Keturah. She bore him 6 sons, fulfilling God’s promise to make from him a multitude of peoples. Then, it moves to dispense of Ishmael’s genealogy. Showing that his twelve sons were also God’s fulfillment of His word to Abraham. And finally, it concentrates on Isaac. However, the final section begins focussing on the barrenness of Rebekah, Isaac’s wife. In time God responds to Isaac’s prayer and Rebekah conceives twins who quarrel from the womb, Esau and Jacob. These two young men grow up to be true to their names. But the center thought is the birthright, something that Jacob avidly desires but Esau considers worthless.

After the death of Sarah, Abraham considers his old age and that it is time to find a wife for Isaac. He fully trusts that the Lord will find this wife and makes his servant Eliezer take an oath to return back to his homeland to find her. Eliezer journeys to his master Abraham’s home and his journey is made successful by God. He finds Rebekah and returns with her back to Isaac. The key principle that is at work here is how God’s providence and sovereignty work in conjunction with man’s actions and responses. This is the very essence of salvation.
Today we will be doing an exegetical study of Romans 10:8-10 - a well-known passage. The overall thrust of the text will highlight the way and means by which a person can be saved. Our study in the Greek text will show the beauty of these things to give us what we have today as a doctrinal statement of the Christian faith.

With the revelation of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, we now have the final words of the Book of Revelation concerning Jesus the Messiah. John completes the picture of the eternal age in as much as God has decided to show it to him (us) and ends with both an affirmation and invitation. An affirmation as to the assuredness of the prophecy written in the book and an invitation to all to join God in that blessed, eternal kingdom.

After the Kingdom of Jesus the Messiah has ended, Satan is shortly released and leads the world in a final rebellion. He is quickly dispatched and this event is followed by the Judgment Day. This is the second resurrection, where only unbelieving sinners will be resurrected, judged and sentenced to the Lake of Fire for all eternity. After this will begin the Kingdom of God, called the eternal kingdom. This will be a newly created universe where God finally dwells with mankind for all eternity.

After the final rebellion of Satan and unsaved humanity in the Great War at the end of Jesus’ 1,000 year reign is the Judgment Day, also called the Great White Throne Judgment. Only the wicked dead appear here and are judged and sentenced to the Lake of Fire for all eternity. The universe that has existed since Genesis 1:1 is dissolved; and we prepare to enter the eternal state (the Kingdom of God). Also, it is at this judgment that wicked angels will be judged by the saints and sentenced to the Lake of Fire.

When Jesus returns and sets up His kingdom, Satan will be imprisoned for 1,000 years. That is, for the whole duration of the Kingdom. At the end of Jesus’ messianic reign (the kingdom), Satan is released for a short time and influences much of humanity to rebel against Christ in one final war. Both Satan and his followers are quickly dispatched, followed by the Great White Throne Judgment.

After Jesus returns with the saints and (He alone) destroys the armies of the antiChrist, He will judge the Gentile nations. The righteous Gentiles will be welcomed into the Kingdom, while the unrighteous Gentiles will be put to death. Also, it is at this time that Satan and his demonic angels will be temporarily imprisoned for 1,000 years - the duration of the Kingdom. The marriage supper/feast of Christ will then be celebrated by all those in the Kingdom. Jesus will allot thrones throughout the Kingdom. And the greatest time of peace and prosperity the world has ever known will begin.

After the destruction of Babylon (Revelation 17 and 18), there is great praise in heaven. The vindication of the saints who were killed is now taking place as God brings destruction on the anti-Christ and his kingdom. Jesus is officially married to His church and then returns to DESTROY all of his enemies.

Revelation 17 is the destruction of ecclesiastical (religious) Babylon. Revelation 18 is the destruction of political-economic Babylon, the capitol of the anti-Christ. Babylon will become the financial and cultural center of the world in the last days and will be the headquarters of the antiChrist. But because of continuing idolatry and the persecution of the saints, her judgment has now fully come, fulfilling the prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah.

"Justification" in Paul verses James is often misunderstood and thought to be a contradiction by some. Martin Luther truly disliked the letter of James, because he thought it contradicted the glorious message of (Paul's) salvation by faith alone. But is that what James really said? There is no contradiction in the message of Paul and James. While Paul's emphasis is on the MEANS of salvation, James is emphasizing the PROOF (or evidence) of salvation.

Looking at Revelation 20, we find that Jesus has returned in power and glory. He has restored the earth to a state of paradise like Adam had in the Garden in Eden. Satan and his demonic horde have been contained in the abyss for the full length of the reign of Jesus. This gives mankind the opportunity to benefit from the blessings of Jesus's work of restoration. However, no soon as Satan is released does mankind in great numbers follow him and rebel against the residing Messiah. This is incredible! But, it tells us something about mankind's nature. -- We have a nature to rebel against God, even if we are living in paradise. Therefore, let us as God's people always cast away spiritual pride and clothe ourselves with humility, recognizing our continuous need of Christ to keep us.

In John 7, Jesus gave a fundamental principle of the world’s regard for Him – hatred. There has always been a hatred of Christ and christians by the world; and there will continue to be hatred. Therefore, christians should represent Christ and the values of Christianity and stop trying to be friends with a world that will never love them. We should be loyal to Jesus and the doctrines of holiness in this God-hating world.

Matthew 13:54-56 recorded when Jesus briefly returned home to Nazareth. While He was there, He entered the synagogue and taught the people. Even though much is not discussed about the physical appearance of the Messiah/Servant except His marring by those who judged Him (52:14), a few details are given. In 53:2, Isaiah states that He will spring forth from the root of David, and as a developing child be considered tender (precious) in the sight of the Lord. Revelation 14:14-15:8 was an ominous introduction to the Bowl Judgments, which will be the most destructive judgments that will come upon on the earth for all time. The last section of Revelation chapter 14 breaks with the discussion of the Anti-christ and continues with the events of the 7th Trumpet judgments. This comes to a sort of an interlude before the Seven Bowl Judgments that shows a scene of angels reaping with a sickle and praise in heaven. But Revelation 14:14-20 is all about the angels reaping the earth - the final judgments!!

This section is a warning for all who might worship the Anti-Christ. In Revelation 13 there was the rise of the (false Messiah) the Anti-Christ and the forcing of all humanity to accept Him as the God-man by receiving the number of his name (666). However, God will warn humanity by sending three angelic witnesses declaring to them that they should not worship the Anti-Christ under the threat of great judgments. Nevertheless, the Anti-Christ will madly pursue worldwide domination, trying to force all to worship him and kill those who will not. Christians will suffer greatly during this time; but God gives them a final message of comfort.

We are finally finishing Revelation 13, looking at the False Prophet. What we will find is that the false prophet functions in such a way as to complete the satanic trinity - Satan is the father, the Anti-Christ is the son and the false prophet is the evil "holy spirit". The false prophet will encourage every one who is not a true believer to worship the Anti-Christ as the true God. He will set up an idol (image) in the Jewish temple so that all might worship it, that is, the Anti-Christ. In order to establish this worldwide control over humanity, he will create an economic system. This economic system is very simple. Any person who wishes to conduct any kind of trade or commerce must have the numeric representation of the Anti-Christ's name (666) on their right hand or forehead. By accepting this "mark of the beast", the recipient is acknowledging their acceptance of him as the Christ, God in the flesh.

We continue our teaching in this section with the person and activities of the Anti-Christ during the Great Tribulation, the final three and one-half years of the Tribulation. He is the son of Satan, who hates everything about the true God and will seek to kill all the people of God and force the remaining world population to worship him as god. The period of the Great Tribulation will be a time of horrendous persecution for believers, especially Jews. Many if not most of them will be killed, while the rest will live in abject fear. Nevertheless, God encourages the faithful in Christ Jesus to hold on.

I continued this teaching in Revelation chapter 13 dealing with the anti-Christ, focussing on his resurrection from the dead by the power of his father, Satan. And also, I demonstrated how Satan tries to mimic the true God in His triune being. Many examples are given to parallel and demonstrate who the anti-Christ is, but also why the whole world will worship him as god.
Revelation chapter 12 ended with an announcement that the dragon (Satan), after losing the battle with Michael the archangel, continues in his persecution of God's people. Chapter 13 tells us through whom Satan will use to try to destroy both the Jews and Gentile believers in Christ - the Anti-Christ. So, Revelation 13 tells who the anti-Christ is, where he gets his power and authority and his attempt to force worldwide worship of himself. This is an expansive teaching. So, I will break Revelation 13 into several videos.

Revelation Chapter 12 takes a look back at how Jesus Christ was born of the Jewish people and Satan's attempt to kill Him. And then it projects forward to that present moment in prophetic history, the beginning of the Great Tribulation, which is the latter 3 1/2 years of the Tribulation, when Satan is at war with Michael the archangel. After losing that war, Satan is cast down to the earth, forever losing access into heaven. And so, enraged, he empowers the Anti-Christ to kill the remaining Jews.

In 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, the Apostle Paul commended the Corinthian church for remembering the traditions and practices that he taught them. Genesis 1:1 is the creation of the universe. This very first verse of the Bible teaches many principles. Some of them are the origins of the universe, the creator of the universe, and the orderliness of the first creation. And one of the greatest inherent principles from this verse is: Since the universe is created by God, He has the natural right to govern it and establish the physical, moral and ethical laws. After God formed a place where the man could have fellowship with Him (the Garden in Eden), we are introduced to two trees - the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. After Adam sinned God brought judgment, beginning with the serpent, then Satan, then the woman and finally Adam. It is important to remember that it was Adam's sin ALONE that brought the sentence of death. The two brothers, Cain and Abel, have submitted their offerings to God. But God only accepts Abel's offering and rejects Cain's. Cain refuses to listen to God and repent. Instead, he starts an argument with his brother and kills him. Like He did with his father Adam, God questions Cain and brings him into judgment. Cain is cursed forever from the presence and fellowship with God.

This section begins with the events surrounding the life of Noah. It starts with a demonic attempt to corrupt the Seed of the woman when fallen angels married human females and produced a race of supernatural beings. These beings then proceeded to influence the corruption (wickedness) of mankind to the point where God sorrowfully decided to destroy the earth. The earth is filled with the hybrid species of angels and men. Wickedness is the result of this union. God determines to destroy all life on earth with the exception of Noah and his family. So, He commands Noah to prepare an ark, because the great FLOOD is coming.

Abram has demonstrated great faith by leaving his father's household, obeying God and going to the Promised Land. His faith is indeed great, but he/it is still not what God desires it/him to be. So, God gives Abram his first test and he fails miserably. What does this teach us?

Now that Abram has returned back to the Promised Land from his stay in Egypt, he discovers that God provides for him there. He repents and continues life with his wife and nephew Lot until there is disagreement about the land resources. Abram encourages Lot to separate from him and offers him his choice of the land. Lot chooses the plains of Sodom, as he is looking out for his material prosperity. But will this backfire on him down the road?

After Lot separates from Abram, God renews His covenant promise with Abram. However, this time He expands it to INCLUDE Abram himself (Genesis 12:7). However, by the time Abraham dies this promise remains unfulfilled. So what does this mean? This is the principle of resurrection that is taught in the Old Testament.

Thirteen years after the incident of Hagar's birth of Ishmael to Abram, God returns to him and issues a sign of the covenant: circumcision. He changes Abram's and Sarai's names and goes on to inform Abraham that Ishmael is NOT the promised seed. God will give him another son, and that son (Isaac) will be the son of promise. Abraham ultimately believes God and in obedience is circumcised along with all the males of his household.
In the opening of the letter of Revelations, we are introduced to the author of this letter/book, the Trinity (the tri-une godhead of the Father, the Spirit and the Son). Also, the theme of the overall book is stated: "the coming of Jesus Christ". This is what is meant by apocalypse (unveiling). God returns for a visit with Abraham and confirms the birth of Isaac and strengthens the faith of Sarah. But, also while He is there, He reveals to Abraham the impending judgment upon Sodom and Gomorrah. The Church of Smyrna was a severely persecuted church. However, their sufferings refined them before Christ and He had nothing negative to say about this church. This church tells us about the period of persecution of the church from 100-300 A.D.
The letter to the Church of Pergamum was encouragement to the Christians in Pergamum to remain separated from the pervasiveness of surrounding idolatry. Prophetically speaking, it was the birth of the state church and planted the seeds for the Roman Catholic Church. Interestingly, the Lord Jesus stated that Pergamum was the seat of Satan's throne - the center of idolatrous worship.

After Abraham intercedes for Sodom and Gomorrah (namely his nephew Lot), the angels of God go down to Sodom and are only able to rescue a small portion of his family. Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed and Lot's family is rescued. However, although Lot and his family have been taken out of Sodom, Sodom was still in Lot's family.

Thyatira represents the church age that saw the development of the Roman Catholic Church and a number of doctrines that corrupted Christian theology. Jesus greatly denounced these doctrines and urged them to repent or be cast into the Great Tribulation.

As the time draws near for the promise of a son to be fulfilled to Abraham, he once again fails by his lack of faith. Nevertheless, God does not fail him and maintains His covenant with His imperfect servant. What do these things teach us today? Many, many wonderful things about the nature of God and the covenant that He has made with His people through His Son Jesus, the Messiah.

After the Dark Ages (Church of Thyatira - 600-1500AD) was the Protestant Reformation period from 1500-1700AD. From this time period the church benefitted from a number of concrete doctrinal, foundational truths that were re-established for Christendom. However, the revival of the church was short-lived because they continued the error of establishing state churches all over Europe. Therefore, those in the visible church were members by virtue of infant baptism and not personal faith. Hence, they only had a "name" that they were alive, but were really "dead".

After the two demon invasions of the 5th and 6th Trumpet Judgments, a mighty angel gives John the remaining revelations of judgment in a "little book". These are the judgments of the seven Bowl (or Vial) Judgments. But before all of this, he is given a picture of the two prophets who will have supernatural ministries during the first half of the Tribulation.

The scene is prepared with a glorious angel who holds the revelation of the final 7 Bowl Judgments in a little book. And it also tells of the 144,000 Jews who were sealed to protect them from the judgments of God and serve as evangelists throughout the world. They will have great success! However, many people who responded to their message of the gospel, will pay for their faith with their lives. They are seen as souls under the altar. Now, we continue with the opening of the 7th seal, which will begin the Trumpet Judgments. The world will suffer even greater devastation!

Before we get into Revelation chapter 6, I thought it would be a good idea to show you guys exactly what it is and how we come to understand it. Briefly, it is a period of seven years in which God in dealing with the Jewish people will also be bringing judgments upon the whole world. After Abraham's momentary lapse of faith (and the rescue of Sarah - again), God fulfills his promise to Abraham, and Isaac is born. There is much celebrating until Ishmael is seen taunting Isaac and Sarah demands that he and his mother Hagar be sent away. Abraham obeys God and He reassures him that He will bless his son. Abraham then settles in the land of Gerar of the Philistines and establishes public worship of the one true God.
