Today I sit down with registered dietian nutritionist, podcast host and infectious personality, Katie Hake.
Though I work with a registered dietitian I was not familiar with Katie's credential moniker, Registered Dietitian Nutrionist so we start off by me trying to figure out what that is.
Katie shares a bit of her backstory in how she got to being a registered dietitian as well how some naivety about the field helped her move forward with it.
We talk about the mental struggles that people go through with food because of its pervasive nature in our lives.
Because of these negative attitudes we can hold about food, I ask Katie about how we can self diagnose a bit to see if our relationship with working out and food is healthy.
We lean into the fact that working with people and food is in part a job of psychology and not just knowing nutrition facts.
Katie shares a bit about her own diet philosophy and how it varies from a traditional stand on the scale and only look at the numbers approach.
In the middle we get into Katie's thoughts on training people to eat intuitively.
We discuss the problem of motivation and how it isn't possible to create motivation in someone.
As the conversation moves on Katie and I talk about priorities and the myth of not having enough time in the day for things that important to you. As well as how self-care is not really an option to a healthy life.
We jump onto the abundance mentality and I share my own philosophy of why adopting the abundance mentality is helpful even supposing it wasn't true.
In the last part we jump into dealing with the psychological reality of growing up in a place of food insecurity. A situation which affects about 20% of the US's children each year.
One of Katie's initiatives for her clients is to clean up their social media and have a proper social media diet - I ask her what that all entails.
We tackle how Katie deals with diet cults and the mentality behind dieting. As she says it herself, being a fan of non-diets doesn't make her anti diet (listen in to see what she means here).
Check out more of Katie's wisdom on her website katiehake.com and you can listen to her podcast the Fit Friends Happy Hour through her blog.
