In Part 1 of our two-part journey, Haunted Talks sets out on a road trip through some of North America's most beautiful parks and wild places. In 1987, Ruthie Mae McCoy called 911 from her apartment with a terrifying story: someone was trying to break in through her bathroom mirror. To the dispatcher, it sounded impossible. Maybe even delusional. Ruthie Mae's call was treated as low priority. Officers came, knocked, and left. Two days later, they forced the door and found her dead inside. The mirrored medicine cabinet had been pulled from the wall, revealing a dark passageway behind it. Ruthie Mae had been telling the truth. Someone had come through the mirror.
If that sounds familiar, it should. Ruthie Mae's case would later become entangled with Candyman, the horror film that helped turn a mirror, a repeated name, and a hook-handed killer into one of the genre's most enduring nightmares.
On this episode of Haunted Talks, we explore the real murder behind Candyman, and how architectural shortcuts, systemic neglect, folklore, and disbelief transformed an ordinary apartment fixture into a threshold for evil.

Before Houdini became the name history remembered, another illusionist drew enormous crowds and commanded extraordinary fees. He called himself the Great Lafayette, and his performances were part magic show, part circus, part theatre of death.
Then, one night in Edinburgh, his grand finale set the theatre on fire. Lafayette was seen rushing back inside, through the flames, to save the animals he loved.
By morning, investigators believed they had found his body.
Then they found him again.

What if a ghost is not only something we encounter in the dark, but something we may, in some mysterious way, participate in?
In this special episode of Haunted Talks, Jim presents a manifesto for reimagining the paranormal. Moving beyond the familiar debate between "spirits of the dead" and "tricks of the mind," he explores a third possibility: that hauntings may emerge from a stranger relationship between memory, consciousness, place, intention, and attention.
Drawing on the Stone Tape theory, quantum physics as a provocative analogy, years of Alone in the Dark investigations, and a collective experiment with more than one hundred Haunted Talks listeners during the 2024 solar eclipse, Jim asks whether the human mind may be more than a neutral observer of the unknown.
He also recounts an unforgettable session at the top of the CN Tower, where a voice through a spirit box refused the label of "ghost" and, when asked where it normally resided, answered with one word: consciousness.
This is not an argument for blind belief. It is an invitation to ask better questions, to move beyond gadgets and certainty, and to consider whether the mystery is stranger, wider, and closer than we think. December 29, 1972. A routine flight becomes an unspeakable tragedy when Eastern Airlines Flight 401 crashes into the Florida Everglades. Ninety-six souls perish in the dark swampland, their final moments a desperate struggle against fire, water, and alligators.

Weeks later, Captain Bob Loft and Flight Engineer Don Repo began appearing on other Eastern Airlines aircraft, warning crews of danger, completing pre-flight checks, and even materializing in overhead bins. At 9:04 a.m., Halifax was torn apart in an instant. One moment it was a thriving wartime city, the next, it was fire, thunder, and ruin. The CN Tower is an iconic Canadian landmark. Standing at 553 meters or 1,815 feet, it is one of the tallest free-standing structures in the world. Contemplating the Tower, an intriguing idea crossed our minds. Although it is not known as a haunted place, it possesses unique characteristics that could make it a one-of-a-kind site for an experimental paranormal investigation. Our hypothesis was that if the Tower serves as one of the world's largest antennas for earthly signals, such as radio waves, could we also use it as an antenna to make a connection to the other side or beyond? In 1972, when Dr. Jan L. Perkowski (pictured) published a report on the strange happenings in Wilno, Ontario, it made international headlines and forever tied the small Eastern Ontario community to Vampire stories. The town has been eager to shake this reputation – focusing instead on its history as the first Polish settlement in Canada. But the vampire lore endures and any online search or local mention of “Wilno” will quickly come up with endless references to vampires. But, there is so much more to the story. In the episode, we share the lesser-reported eyewitness accounts that Perkowski gathered from the locals. They are terrifying and odd. Blending old-world superstitions and beliefs with modern life.

Shortly after 4am, on July 6th, 2022, an explosion rocked the hilltop pasture on which “America’s Stonehenge” stood for over 40 years. One of the monument’s mysterious columns was destroyed and the capstone on top was badly cracked. The blast caused the remaining columns to become unstable and the entire monument was brought down by county officials later the same day. In Amherst, a young woman named Esther Cox became the target of suspicion after her family’s home was tormented by an entity that would start fires, leave writings on the walls, and directly communicate with witnesses by using knocks or a disembodied voice.
In Caledonia Mills, a family was besieged by a relentless series of fires. It seemed anything could catch fire at any moment: wallpaper, wet towels, and the grass in the yard. Nothing was safe from the flames. The family was so worried about the spread of fire that they all took turns keeping watch, worried that there could be an arsonist lurking in their midst.

**The** **first episode in a 3-part Haunted Talks special event!** Over the next few episodes, we’ll explore four poltergeist stories that took place in Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries, all of which seem to share some striking and terrifying similarities.
We start off with one of the greatest Canadian mysteries of all time and what might be the most famous historic poltergeist story in the country: the Baldoon mystery. Rocks and bullets were propelled at the exterior of their house by unseen attackers. Family members would often collect the bullets and rocks and sometimes leave unique markings on the items. They were then brought off the property and even deposited in nearby creeks. Only a few days later, the same bullets and rocks with the unique markings would appear back at their house.
Our second poltergeist story takes us to Clarendon, Quebec, where the Dagg Family were subjected to objects flying around and heavy furniture moving by itself. Despite the suspicions placed on a recently adopted daughter who seemed a lightning rod for the activity, there was agreement that no one person could start so many random fires without help.

The residents search the structure in an attempt to determine the cause of the disturbance. Their ghost hunt culminates with a trip down to the damp and dark basement – where something – was waiting for them. We share the story.
The strange but true story of how child movie star and “America’s Sweetheart”, Shirley Temple, survived a brush with death on Christmas Eve in 1939 during a live radio show. We share Temple’s own account of the terrifying and bizarre incident, as well as key parts of the original radio broadcast. Was it a clandestine operation by a foreign government? Someone jealous of Temple’s success within the entertainment industry? Or, something much stranger and darker than that? While living in Bangor, Maine, Stephen King would often visit Mount Hope Cemetery for inspiration. He reportedly borrowed the names of some of his best-known characters, such as Carrie and Georgie, from headstones on the grounds.
Aside from King’s fictional creations, the cemetery has a well-earned reputation for being very haunted. Many visitors have reported seeing apparitions.
