Even in our moments of greatest joy and delight in Jesus, our sinfulness still leaves us prone to fall into old patterns of self-dependence. Jacob shows us what that looks like in his pursuit of a wife. We witness the disastrous effects a life lived apart from wholehearted trust in God can have.
The Price of IdolatryJacob’s pursuit of Rachel is clearly rooted in his physical attraction for her and belief in his own ability and strength. He shows us what idolatry looks like because of the price he’s willing to pay to be with Rachel. He puts ultimate and eternal value in a person who cannot provide that very thing. We often can identify our idols by considering where our money, time, and thoughts go. They aren’t always bad, immoral things but usually are good things like marriage, kids, housing, and jobs that we think can give us ultimate worth. In the end, they remain false gods.
The Cost of IdolatryThe thing with idols is that the more you give to them, the more they demand from you. When you think it’s time to collect, they grant you far less. You go to bed thinking you have Rachel but wake up to Leah. Laban’s deceit holds a mirror up to Jacob so he can see a reflection of his own behavior. When God is left out of the picture, we resort to chasing false gods that only disappoint. Nonetheless, our God is gracious and promises us Himself in Christ. Jesus is no mere idol with false promises but gave fully of Himself so we have nothing to pay.
Discussion Questions1. Read Genesis 24 and the encounter of Abraham’s servant an Rebekah at the well. How does this narrative unfold differently from Jacob and Rachel’s, especially in relation to trust in God? 2. Are there things in your life right now that you think will make you whole and complete if you have them? Would you consider them an idol in your heart? 3. Have you ever had the experience of thinking you’ve finally received your Rachel but woken up and realized it’s just Leah? What happened and how did you handle the realization that things weren’t what you thought they were? 4. What is it about Jesus that makes him no idol but the only one who by faith can truly deliver and satisfy?
