Exodus 17: 1-7. As the Summer rush began to wane, and the next season of study grew closer, Sojourn Church took a month-long pause of operation to consider what godly rest looks like. We even took a week off to actively practice the idea of godly rest and made space for a local concert that some local church’s had organized for the community. This sermon comes as part one of two teachings given during this pause.
Exodus 17 might not come to mind at first when initially considering places of great rest in the Bible. By this point the people of Israel are all but totally stranded in the desert and on the verge of insurrection against Moses and the God who dragged them out of their comfy homes in Egypt. The people were so turned off from the environment around them that they failed to put their trust — that is, their rest — in the God who had broken them out of slavery to bring them into His promised land with him. This passage, then, serves as a potent object lesson in trusting the Lord for the provision we need, in order to fully rest in our lives.
Luke 24:13-35. In a brilliant logical proof for the evidence of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead, Paul writes to the church in Corinth (1 Cor. 15) that Jesus showed himself alive to several people, to as many as 500 at one time! While most of these interactions were not recorded into writing, some of them were, and they are all as exciting as they are amazing. One of these recorded instances can be found near the end of Luke’s Gospel account and in fact concludes his motif of Jesus’s food-oriented ministry. As such, it seemed only right to conclude our tour of the Gospel with this story of Jesus seated at the Table.
Personally, it’s one of my favorite stories of Jesus.
Join us as we finish our series on Table-centered Evangelism and enjoy the shock of Jesus’ disciples meeting their Living Lord for the first time!
Luke 22:7-20, 24-30. Before the Resurrection, Jesus’ ministry was marked by a distinct way that he would take something his audience thought they knew well enough and frame it in such a way that exposed just how little they actually understood about it. Even the things many Jews held close to their identity as God’s Chosen people, he would take and throw upside-down; Passover was no exception to this upheaval, as the Disciples found out only a few hours before Jesus’ arrest and murder at the hands of the Pharisees.
Join us as we discover with them that to Jesus this meal was not simply a reminder of God’s first redemption from the Egyptians but actually a symbol and predictor of their final redemption from Sin and Death
Luke 11:37-52. Have you ever been in a social setting and realized you had been set up? Maybe that person your friends had been trying to get you to date was “coincidentally” there too, or you mention a certain topic only to realize someone there had been waiting for you to bring it up. Our seventh week exploring dinner scenes of Luke’s Gospel—Luke’s primary way of displaying Jesus’ approach to evangelism—brings us to exactly that kind of setting, where Jesus once again springs one of the religious elite’s traps only to turn the tables on them.
One disclaimer here: Jesus’ attitude in the majority of this text can come off to a casual reader as unexpectedly confrontational, or even rude. It’s important to remember here that Luke’s goal in presenting Jesus throughout his Gospel is to show him as someone who comforts the vulnerable and holds those to blame for injustice responsible for their actions.
So, join us as we watch Jesus confront those he holds responsible for the suffering of those he loves.
Luke 10:1-42. Our sixth stop in the gospel according to Luke brought us to the moment Jesus instructs his disciples on how to spread the news of God’s Kingdom and his ministry on Earth. But that’s not the only image of service to God this section of Luke’s Gospel has to offer; instead, we’re given two others as well to complete the picture. Join us as we learn what it means to be an ambassador, a neighbor, and a worshipper as we gather together around the King’s Table.
Luke 9:7-20. As Jesus’ ministry continued to gain the attention of those around him, one crucial question came up: Who is this guy? Everyone had their own spin and interpretation of what they thought was going on, but no one really knew for sure. No one except the Disciples, that is, and to illustrate how they knew who Jesus really was, Luke poses the question on either side of one story: a story of a great feast.
Luke 7:36-50. As we continue our tour through Luke’s Gospel account, we find ourselves at yet another dinner scene. Instead of Jesus eating with the rejected and unclean of Jewish society, however, this time Jesus’s host is a Pharisee. Oddly enough, a prostitute crashing the party and throwing herself at Jesus was only the second most controversial thing that happened that night. Join us as we learn about Jesus’s take on faith, forgiveness, and his power over the sins of the world.
Luke 5:27-32. It’s easy to look down at the Pharisees in the Bible; they’re shown in a pretty poor light, after all. But what if they were the only ones acting rationally, according to their way of living, and Jesus was some strangely popular rebel who needed to be dealt with before things got out of control? Take Levi, for instance. He claimed the parts of being a Jew that benefitted him, but besides that he was a walking betrayal of God’s chosen people! Ritually unclean, hasn’t been to Synagogue in years, morally disgusting—this guy was as far up the organized crime ladder that Roman authorities would let a Jew get, and he had done whatever it’d taken to get there. But Jesus doesn’t seem to mind. He doesn’t do anything like how upstanding citizens should act towards people like that—he invites him to dinner. More than that, he invites him to be one of his disciples and tells him to get as many of his mobster friends together for a party to celebrate it! The Pharisees are angry, to put it politely. Who wouldn’t be?
Matthew 3:13-17. In this second and final installment of our mini-series on Resting in the Lord, guest speaker Joseph Peterson shares his own personal journey on the matter and teaches us the valuable lesson of finding and truly rooting our identity in who God tells us we are, as best modeled by Jesus himself.
James 1:1-18. Imagine you’re a lump of iron ore, never been used, fresh from the mine. Raw potential. You’ve got a long way to go before you’re smithing material, but you’re already in the hands of the Smith himself—there’s no doubt in your mind you’ll be ready to sell by tomorrow morning. But first: the refining process. This is the life we all live on Earth, where God has set up the environment meant to refine us into the people he has called us to be. Guest speaker Ricky Lindsey from Plant City, FL brings the message to develop the context around which our Summer series will be built.
Ephesians 5:18-21. In our eleventh week exploring Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Matt looks specifically at a section of verses describing the manner in which our newfound identity in Christ is lived. It’s common for these verses to center on the topic of alcohol and ignore the rest, but what Paul is doing here is describing what it looks like to be completely under the influence of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. You lose your own sense of inhibitions in reckless abandon for loving others and being thankful to God for the good in your lives.
Ephesians 5: 1-17. In our tenth week exploring Ephesians, we find ourselves waist deep in what Paul the Apostle had been working towards teaching to his audience: the way of a Jesus follower. These verses have been all too easily abused in the Church history, so they should be treated with discernment in some regard; this is not another list of religious laws for us to blindly mimic. Rather, these are explicit examples of what it means to take to heart everything that Paul has been teaching us from the very beginning. As followers of Jesus, we have been pulled out of the death and slavery of our pasts into a new identity defined by Jesus himself; it only makes sense, then, that we act as he did, and Paul is determined to show them—and us—exactly what all that entails.
John 3:16-17. In celebration of the annual day of remembering the incredible victory Jesus achieved through the Cross by raising from the dead, we took a brief hiatus from our series exploring the book of Ephesians and looked instead at what it might mean in John’s account of the Gospel when he said, “God so loved the world that he gave his only son…” It’s a powerful sentence, leading us to an equally powerful conviction about our own lives, should we truly take the time to consider the practical effects it has on us all.
”For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
Ephesians 6:1-9. Our thirteenth week in Paul’s book to the Ephesian church took us to the delightful—and often times troubling—topic of parenting. In this section, Paul definitively instructs God’s people how they are to live as members of the family He’s creating through us. But this family doesn’t work how you’d expect it: slaves and masters serve each other as equals under God’s ultimate Kingship, in the workplace and out, and most importantly—what Paul has been teaching from the first Chapter—we are all family in this Church. These instructions are not merely instructions for biological relationships anymore but for everyone we can claim as brothers in sisters in Christ.
Ephesians 6:10-24. The fourteenth and final installment in our study through the book of Ephesians providentially took place on Memorial Day, where Americans across the world can pause and consider the dedication and courage of so many men and women who have sacrificed their lives to fight for what they believed was worth the cost. This is the very fight Paul opens our eyes to in his concluding words for the Ephesian church. Not a fight against an invading political power, or a dangerous ideology as has been the case in US history; rather, Paul turns our attention to the real war being waged: a spiritual war in our own back yards, our own church buildings, in our own hearts. Everything Paul says in this letter all builds to this one call to action: Never let down your guard.
Ephesians 4:17-32. In our ninth week exploring the book of Ephesians, Matt concludes a three-part turning point in the flow of the letter. The first half of Ephesians spoke mainly of Who Jesus is and how his accomplishment on the cross changes who we are, but with the words in this passage, Paul begins speaking with directives, teaching the new believers of Ephesus what exactly it means in a practical sense to have your whole identity changed completely. This passage, along with the rest of the letter, can be misinterpreted as more rules to fill out a moral checklist. What Paul is really doing, however, is much more helpful and gets to the very hearts of his audience: he is filling out in great detail a picture of the New Life given to us in Christ.
Ephesians 5:22-33. Our twelfth installment of Sojourn’s journey through the book of Ephesians closes the section of Paul’s writing that details with vivid description the life of someone brought to renewed life in Christ. While offensive to many in modern Western culture, this set of verses deals specifically with the nature of the marital relationship, where the wife submits to her husband, and the husband hands over his whole self to serve and benefit his wife. Ironically, this passage has been used in more recent history to support the domination and suppression of the very women it was originally written to protect and restore to proper placement beside their counterpart of Creation.
Ephesians 4: 1-16. In the eighth part of our exploration through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Matt introduces the central argument towards which Paul has been building and from which Paul will be building for the rest of the letter: that we may live our daily lives in light of Jesus’ death and resurrection. To Paul, it isn’t enough to simply acknowledge Jesus’ ministry and leave it at that. Jesus came and died for a grander purposethan lip-service alone; He did not come to simply build the Church. Rather, Jesus built the Church to bless the world. This passage is filled with practical wisdom for our daily lives as Paul dives even deeper into what that looks like, and how it is that the Church is supposed to accomplish such a task.
Ephesians 3:14-21. In the seventh installment of our journey through the letter to the Ephesian Church, Matt takes a longer look at what it is that connects the first half of this letter to the second: Power. Paul is building a case for us to not only believe in the claim of Jesus’ reign on Earth but also understand that belief in this reign makes you a citizen of his kingdom a walking proponent of the Law of the Land—that is, the laws of His lands, no matter where on Earth you may find yourself. It’s a incredible claim to make that Paul believes we cannot complete with any success without the transforming power of God within us. And that is exactly what God gives us: His Power.
Ephesians 3:1-13. This is the sixth installment of our journey through the book of Ephesians, in which Matt speaks about a transitional pause in Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus. While the first part of this letter was spent describing the new identity Christ's work on Earth gives his followers, the last part focuses on how that new identity should immediately impact a follower's daily life. In order for that logical bride to be crossed, then, Paul must talk briefly on what exactly gives him the authority to say what he is saying, what his claims about Christ actually are, and how it is that those reading can know with certainty that his claims are true. It is only in fully believing Paul's words that anyone can then move forward into what this new identity should look like.
Ephesians 2:11-22. This is the fifth installment of our journey through the book of Ephesians, in which Matt speaks on Paul’s instructions to the church of Ephesus concerning race. Nothing was more brutal at that time, or even today, than the racism and hatred towards “outsiders”, and nothing is more opposite from the inclusive love of God either. Enjoy this powerful reminder of how Jesus’ death and resurrection impacted how we relate to people different from us!
Ephesians 2:1-10. In our fourth installment of exploring the letter to the Ephesians, we hear from Paul our terminal diagnosis: we are utterly dead. This grave news was only just final when Paul follows it with the brilliant hope of new life breathed back into our aimless corpses.
Ephesians 1:15-23. In our third week exploring the letter to the Ephesians, Paul tells the church in Ephesus what he prays for when he thinks of them. It’s such a powerful prayer that even Paul had trouble summarizing it, so he wrote one sentence that spans the whole passage! It’s best in that case to simply repeat it: “…that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe…”
Ephesians 1:3-14. Our second week exploring Paul’s letter to the Ephesians brought us to what Paul believed his readers needed to understand first before moving on to the rest of the letter. For Paul, our story actually starts with God choosing us, making us his own, and giving us a permanent place in his divine family.
Ephesians 1:1-2. By way of introduction to Paul’s letter to the Church in Ephesus, we take a look at the first two verses, and at the overall message of the letter. It’s not much writing, but knowing where and when this letter was written, and by whom it was written as well, is crucial in seeing how God spoke to his people then and who he’s making his people into today. God is uniting all things to himself, things from times long past, and things we do in our everyday lives. Join us as we embark on this journey of learning what it means to be United in Christ.
