In each episode, we'll talk to high school coaches and athletic directors about topics like: developing culture, locker room management, character development, hiring staff, mental toughness, anger management, practice and preparation techniques, and more.
What happens when a school district of more than 18,000 student-athletes decides to raise the bar for sportsmanship? In this episode of Coach 360: Beyond The Game, presented by 2Words Character Development, host Colton reconnects with longtime mentor and friend, Coach Charles Ament, Associate Athletic Director of Cy-Fair ISD. With nearly three decades of experience in coaching and leadership, Coach Ament brings a wealth of insight into how character, community, and consistent communication shape the culture of athletics.
This conversation highlights The Texas Way—a statewide sportsmanship initiative designed to decrease ejections, build stronger relationships among coaches, athletes, officials, and parents, and create a better experience for communities across Texas. Coach Ament shares how Cy-Fair ISD implemented this initiative with intentionality, moving beyond posters and slogans to practical actions that transform culture.
Whether you’re a head coach, an assistant, or an athletic director, this episode challenges you to ask one powerful question: What are we really doing to model and build sportsmanship? From empowering student-athlete leaders to celebrating officials, Coach Ament reveals how small, consistent steps lead to lasting change.

Burnout isn’t just about feeling tired—it’s the slow erosion of passion, purpose, and energy that can take even the best coaches out of the game. If you’ve ever found yourself drained, disconnected, or questioning if you can keep going, you’re not alone.
In this episode of Coach 360: Beyond The Game, Host Colton Leonard visits with Coach Stephen Mackey as they dive into the real causes of burnout and outline a four-step process to help coaches finish strong instead of flaming out. Whether you’re a veteran coach or just starting your journey, these principles will help you stay energized, focused, and in the game for the long haul.
Key Takeaways from the Episode * Burnout happens slowly and then all at once. Recognizing the early warning signs—like emotional exhaustion, detachment, and a low sense of accomplishment—can prevent total burnout. * Rhythm and intention matter. Without daily habits that fuel you, it’s easy to run on empty and lose sight of why you started coaching in the first place. * Reflection combats recency bias. Bad weeks don’t define your career—taking time to reflect on your progress and wins keeps you grounded in reality. * Refueling is non-negotiable. Just like a truck pulling a heavy load burns fuel faster, the more responsibility you carry, the more intentional you need to be about recharging. * Focus on what truly matters. The best coaches aren’t just busy—they’re focused on the right work. Avoid distractions, set priorities, and align your efforts with your greater purpose.

Every coach dreams of building a winning program—but what defines winning? Is it state championships and trophy cases, or is it developing young athletes into leaders who thrive beyond the game?
In this episode of Coach 360: Beyond The Game, Coach Ben Nicholas, Athletic Director at Village Tech Schools, shares his journey from unexpected coaching opportunities to leading a 3A athletic program in a highly competitive region. Coach Nicholas has spent years shifting his school’s athletic mindset from a club team culture to a championship mentality, proving that resources don’t define success—culture does.
If you’re a coach leading a smaller program, a team facing adversity, or looking to reinforce character development, this episode is packed with insights on leadership, athlete identity, and building a player-led culture that lasts.
Key Takeaways * Culture Is Greater Than Circumstances – Facilities and budgets don’t make champions—mindset does. Champions find a way, no matter the obstacles. * Athletes Are More Than Their Sport – 99% of high school athletes don’t play beyond high school, meaning their identity must be built on who they are, not just what they do. * Relationships Over Dictatorship Coaching – The best programs don’t run on fear-based leadership, but on mutual respect and understanding between athletes and coaches. * Success Looks Different for Every Team – Progress isn’t always about championships—it’s about personal and team growth, learning to overcome adversity, and consistently improving. * Coaches Are Still Students – Great coaches never stop learning. Who’s coaching the coaches? Seeking guidance, mentorship, and continuous improvement is essential for leading young athletes.
Quotes from the Episode * "Champions find a way—no excuses, no shortcuts, just solutions." * "You are not defined by your sport. You have value beyond the game." * "Coaching isn’t about telling athletes what to do—it’s about building relationships where they want to follow." * "We may not have the biggest facilities, but we have the biggest heart—and that’s what wins." * "Success isn’t measured by trophies, but by growth—on and off the field."

Culture isn’t just a catchphrase on a locker room wall—it’s the foundation that defines who your team is under pressure. Every great program, from high school teams to college powerhouses, thrives on clear core values that guide athletes beyond the game.
But how do you go from a list of words to a culture that actually shapes behavior? In this episode of Coach360: Beyond The Game, Coach Stephen Mackey lays out four essential steps to defining, teaching, and living out core values in a way that gets buy-in from your athletes.
If you’re a coach starting a new program or looking to reset and strengthen your team’s culture, this episode gives you a proven framework to make core values come alive—not just for one season, but for years to come.
Key Takeaways from the Episode * Connect Core Values to Character Traits – The best values aren’t just words; they are anchored in character like grit, accountability, or humility. * Define Values Through Commitments – Athletes need clear, action-based definitions so they can assess themselves and hold teammates accountable. * Coach Core Values Like You Coach the Game – Just like X’s and O’s, values must be taught, reinforced, and practiced in different situations. * Turn Core Values into a Mantra – A great catchphrase or team mantra helps players internalize and own their team’s identity.

Every coach wants a player-led team, but how do you create a culture where athletes hold each other accountable, play for something bigger than themselves, and show up every day ready to compete? At Round Rock High School, Coach Cody Moore and Coach Jordan Gesh have built a football program centered around brotherhood, relentless effort, and above-the-line behavior—not just on the field, but in life.
In this episode of Coach 360: Beyond The Game, Coach Moore and Coach Gesh discuss their turnaround season, shifting from a 4-7 record to 8-1 by focusing on culture over results. They share how self-reflection, accountability, and redefining leadership helped reshape their team, their coaching approach, and ultimately, their success.
If you’re a coach looking to build a lasting culture that goes beyond the scoreboard, this episode is packed with practical strategies and coaching leadership insights.
Key Takeaways from the Episode * Self-Reflection is the First Step to Growth – Instead of blaming external factors, great coaches start with the person in the mirror and focus on what they can control. * Culture Over Talent Wins Every Time – Shifting from focusing on wins and losses to building leadership and accountability made all the difference for Round Rock’s turnaround season. * Brotherhood is a Choice – Players must actively choose to be part of the team culture, looking out for their teammates and holding themselves to a higher standard. * Above-the-Line vs. Below-the-Line Behavior – A simple, powerful framework that helps athletes course-correct quickly and understand the impact of their actions. * Accountability Starts with Leadership – Assistant coaches play a vital role in supporting head coaches, offering honest feedback, and ensuring everyone is aligned with the program’s values. * Make Character Development a Priority – Round Rock’s BE REAL acronym (Brotherhood, Relentless Effort, Above the Line) is woven into everything they do—not just a poster on the wall. * Invest in Kids Beyond the Game – The best coaches mentor, encourage, and love their athletes unconditionally, knowing that coaching is about building men, not just players.

Coaching today isn’t the same as it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. The landscape of youth development has changed, and adolescence now extends well beyond high school. As adolescence expands, today’s athletes need strong coaches more than ever. In this episode, Coach 360 host, Colton Leonard, welcomes back Coach Stephen Mackey for our special series "Huddle Up With Coach Mackey."
Mackey introduces the Five E’s of Leadership—Empathy, Example, Expectation, Equipping, and Encouragement—as a game plan for maximizing impact on and off the field.
If you’re looking to set high standards while still meeting young athletes where they are, this episode is for you.
Key Takeaways from the Episode * Adolescence is Expanding – Many young adults aren’t reaching full independence until 25, meaning coaches have an even greater responsibility to provide structure and mentorship. * The Five E’s of Leadership – The best coaches lead through Empathy, Example, Expectation, Equipping, and Encouragement. * Empathy Doesn’t Mean Soft – Understanding why athletes think and act a certain way helps coaches lead more effectively, not lower expectations. * Set the Standard by Example – If you demand hard work, discipline, and excellence from your athletes, you must demonstrate it first. * High Expectations Inspire Growth – Athletes don’t fear challenges; they thrive when they know a coach believes in them and equips them to rise to the occasion. * Encouragement Fuels the Process – Without consistent encouragement, even the most disciplined athletes can burn out. The best coaches build up their players every step of the way.

Before there is trust, effort, and a run-through-a-brick-wall-for-you commitment, there is LOVE.
This episode with Devon Mann, Head Football Coach and A.D. at Santo ISD, hinges upon love. Not a Valentines Day feels love, but a Day One, Unconditional Choice to love and want the best for your athletes. From there, we range widely, hearing about keys to success for first-year coaches, the difference between a GOAL and a MISSION, running a Leadership Council (hint: there's gotta be food involved), and the benefits of allowing other voices speak, not only the Head Coach.
Key Takeaways:
- Team Meals show the kids that we as coaches are human.
- "COVID has felt a lot like coaching: you try something, it doesn't work, you back up, punt, and try again."
- Culture is sexy to talk about until you have to defend it.

"When I was growing up, we just did whatever coach told us to do. Today, that's not enough. You've got to model it." In this episode, we speak to A.D. and football coach, Chad Olson out west in Pecos, TX about his program's core values of Effort, Attitude, Guts, Love, Energy, and Sacrifice... E.A.G.L.E.S.
We focus in on SACRIFICE, and how the same discipline that carries your athlete through a 6:30 AM workout will pay dividends in the real world as husbands, fathers, employees, and employers.
Key Takeaways:
- Being a positive force for your athletes doesn't mean you're soft or easy on them
- What is the role of a coach when tragedy strikes?
When you try to do someone else's job, you fail at their job AND you fail at your own. In this weight room talk, Mackey reminds us that while we can't do EVERYTHING, we can remain laser-focused on what is ours to accomplish today, on YOUR JOB.
When you are about to speed up, you'd better know you're headed in the right direction. That's why the first week of Boot Camp at Anderson-Shiro happens in the classroom. Bradley Hodges, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director talks to us about slowing down at transition points in the year to ask, "What is best for THIS group, at THIS moment? What have we done well and what have we not?"
Key Takeaways:
-Kids see right through the phony. If you're going to say it, be about it.
-Respect isn't only kids to coaches. Respect comes from within.
-Relationship is first. There is no buy in that's not built on relationship.

"School Pride" is a term often thrown around, but what does that mean? What does that look like in action and how do we as coaches build it?
In this episode with Coach Eli Brown, we hear of the STORIED Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And by storied, we mean 42 State Championships and 5 National Championships in 100 years of Boys Basketball... Coach Brown discusses how his team rehearses the history of the school along with its role in the community as a vehicle to win games and build the character of athletes within his program.
Key Takeaways:
- You can't control when an opportunity will come, but you can be ready when it does.
- What does it mean for your athletes to be good stewards of the program?
- The platform of a coach is bigger than we sometimes believe. How do we use it to foster respect in our communities?

Any athletic program needs a solid foundation in relationships. Relationships between athletes and coaches, as well as between the school and the community. Relationships are about getting to know each other and spending time together. Relationships are about caring for each other beyond what we can get out of the other person. In this episode, Coach Ruben Garcia offers down-to-earth advice for coaches about relationships, teaching athletes and assistant coaches to be leaders, and sticking to your guns.
Key Takeaways:
-Relationship should be a program's foundation.
-Everybody has a story; it's up to the individual to make it a successful one.
-Teach your athletes and assistant coaches how to be leaders.

Relationships are built on trust. If our athletes don't trust us, then we won't be able to build strong relationships with them. Without strong relationships, we can't help them become the best young men and women they can be. We can't just tell our athletes that they can trust us because trust is built slowly over time by both our words and our actions. In this episode, Coach Brandon Hankins tells us how to show athletes that they can trust us so that we can help them reach their full potential.
Key Takeaways:
-Don't tell your athletes they can trust you; show them.
-Be involved in the community you live in.
-Always be loyal and treat people right.

Being a coach isn't about you. It's not about your success; it's about the students' success. How our your athletes successful? How are you helping them to be ever more successful? Ensuring the success of others is what coaching is all about. In this episode, Coach Seth Stinton reminds us that coaching is never about us. Instead, it's about the kids and the journey we get to take them on.
Key Takeaways:
-Be positive and support others.
-Loyalty is doing what's in the best interest of others.
-It's never about us; it's about the kids and the journey you take with them.

This week, Mackey talks with retiring US Army Lieutenant Colonel Ingebrigt A.L. “Andy” Riise. Andy is a Mental Performance Coach, Consultant, Speaker, and Author who passionate is helping individuals, leaders, and teams get better at what they do. A West Point graduate and former Army Football player, he had a decorated 20 year career, leading soldiers in a variety of austere missions highlighted by three combat deployments, strategic missions on four continents, and five years in two elite Special Forces units. They talk football, the importance of coaches, and Andy’s new book, Deliberate Discomfort: How US Special Operations Forces Overcome Fear and Dare to Win by Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable. As if all that wasn’t enough, Andy is also a key leader at the Texas A&M Coaching Academy and instrumental in the Veterans to Coaching program.
Most students dislike tests. But tests are valuable and even necessary because they allow us to see where we stand. When we know where we are, then we can figure out how to get where we want to be. In this episode, Mackey explains the value of testing our athletes so they (and we) know where they are--not to judge or label, but to help them move forward to reach their full potential.
Key Takeaways
-The value of a test is that we see where we are.
-When we see where we are, we can see the path forward.
-We must continually test ourselves to come to grips with the truth of where we are.
Does winning in sports really matter? Yes, it does. But perhaps not for the reasons that we immediately think of. The value of winning isn't in beating another person, and it's not in the accolades that come from a win. The true value of winning is in how it pushes us to prepare and compete to our greatest ability. In this way, winning in sports teaches us to win in life. In this episode, Mackey breaks down the value of winning and why the most successful people learn how to win well.
Key Takeaways
-The most successful people are the ones who can take things going wrong and make them right.
-The value of winning in athletics is how it teaches us to win in life.
-We must learn to value the process over the results.
The main reason given for not establishing character development as a routine part of an athletic program is lack of time. But here's the truth about time: We make time for what we value. If we "don't have time" for character development, it's because we don't value it enough.
In this episode, Mackey explains that we have to take control of making time for the things that we value. We are responsible for making things like character development a priority and organizing our time accordingly.
Key Takeaways
-It's not about the amount of time you spend on character development; it's about the quality and intentionality of that time.
-If we don't audit our time, we're likely wasting our time.
-Don't let what you cannot control keep you from controlling what you can.

The most dangerous racism is implicit racism, the kind that we think we've already dealt with when we haven't. We can't fight racism like this in the world until we deal with that racism in ourselves. That means we have to call right, right and wrong, wrong. We've got to prepare to face racism, to protect each other from its effects, to protest until peace is found, and to press on to the end. Those are the 4 Ps of racism, and in this episode of Coach360, Mackey dives in on how we can use each of them to fight racism.
Key Takeaways:
-You can't change racism in the world until you deal with the racism in you.
-The product of protest will be peace.
-Call right, right and wrong, wrong.
Coaches are important figures in the lives of young adults everywhere. To be a great coach requires passion. It requires an eagerness for more truth, more knowledge, and ever greater improvement. Being a coach is a tough but rewarding job, and we could all use additional resources to help us become the best coaches that we can be. In this episode, Coach360 speaks with Dr. John Thornton of the Coaching Academy at Texas A&M University, which is built for the prospective coach or current coach, regardless of experience level.
Key Takeaways:
-We don't know what we don't know.
-The intelligent person is eager for more truth.
-You have to be passionate to be a coach.

You don't have to get sick to be affected by the pandemic. Everyone is experiencing loss due to COVID-19, whether that's loss of a season, loss of experiences, or loss of loved ones. Going through this difficult time is naturally going to bring up a lot of emotions, and it's not uncommon to feel like you're on an emotional roller coaster.
In this episode, Mackey explains that it's okay to grieve, but it's not okay to stay in that grief for too long. At some point, you've got to go from grief to giddy up.
Key Takeaways:
-COVID-19 can’t take away your value or your worth.
-It will take more strength to ask someone to help you than to cope alone, but that is the only way to truly heal.
-It's okay (and even necessary) to grieve, but it's not okay to stay grieving for too long.

Bad days happen to everyone. But not everyone has the character and preparation to respond to bad days in a way that turns those bad days to growth. The good news is that everyone can develop the character and learn how to prepare to do this.
There is nothing wrong with having bad days; they are just part of being human. But if you can turn those bad days into growth days, if you can be the kind of person who handles failure and setbacks with a growth mindset, then you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. In this episode, Mackey provides encouragement to push through the bad day to the growth that is waiting on the other side.
Key Takeaways:
-No matter how much you prepare, it is guaranteed that something will go wrong.
-Set goals that are worthy of your talents.
-Be the kind of person that does what they say they will do, no matter how difficult it is.

We tend to think of the expectations we set for our athletes as minimums, but in reality, those expectations are generally ceilings. In other words, coaches and athletes are going to rise to the expectations that are set, and go no farther unless we adjust the expectations to a higher standard each time they reach it.
In this episode, Coach Tony Daniels reminds us that coaches set the expectations for their athletes, so when our athletes reach those expectations, we've got to move the bar just a little higher to encourage them to keep growing.
Key Takeaways:
-It's about more than X's and O's; it's about becoming young men and women.
-Embrace the grind.
-Learn from those older or in a higher position than you.

Success isn't final, and failure isn't fatal. Success will always be interrupted by failure at some point, and failure is necessary for finding success. You can't have one without the other because failure and success go hand in hand. It is only through failure that we learn and grow in the ways necessary for us to find success. In this episode, Coach Bill Blankenship talks about failure, correction, and what both of those things mean for our athletes,
Key Takeaways:
-Failing is a huge component of finding success.
-Earn your athletes' trust before you correct them.
-Use failure as an opportunity for growth.

Culture is crucial to success. It's true in business, it's true in the family, and it's definitely true in the locker room. Culture is the soundbite encapsulating what the athletic program or team is really like to be a part of. It's what athletes say about their team to their non-athletic friends or their family. In this episode, we talk with Coach Kevin Flanigan, who explains that a program's culture is determined by it's leadership. If you want to have a great team culture, you've got to be a great leader.
Key Takeaways:
-Trust should be the foundation of your program.
-The true value you place on something is the time you invest in it.
-The leadership of a team dictates the culture, which dictates the behaviors, which dictates the results.

Servant leadership means serving first. A servant leader understands that he or she must serve others to find success in life. A servant leader also becomes closer to his or her team through their service to their teammates and the wider community. When a team serves together, it brings them closer together. In this episode, Coach Tony Benedetto gives us advice for how coaches can build servant leaders in their locker rooms.
Key Takeaways:
-When athletes serve others together, they become more of a team.
-Be explicit about requiring athletes to serve others.
-Know every athletes' name and something about them.

Sports teach us many lessons that will be useful for the rest of our lives. We are trying to reach students through athletics to teach them the skills and values that will help them find success beyond the game. Sports people have a lot of wisdom to share from their time on the field or court. So in this episode, we are speaking with Jeff Traylor, Head Football Coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and he gives us some pearls of wisdom about using our gifts and talents for the good of others, having a humble heart, and getting back up when we get knocked down.
Key Takeaways:
-The gifts and talents you have are not just for you. They're for you to give to others.
-Have the heart of a humble competitor.
-Be empathetic to how others feel.

Life is not all about sports, but sports is all about life. The things that our student-athletes learn in practice and during games will help them well beyond the field, so long as we are intentional about passing on the most important lessons. For example, one of the core values we can teach our athletes is that regardless of what life throws at us or how many setbacks we encounter, it is always possible to win the day by giving our best in everything that we do. In this episode, Coach JD Berna explains this "win the day" mindset.
Key Takeaways:
-Be creative and passionate about growth.
-Life is not all about sports, but sports is all about life.
-Everything that you do, you want to be the best.

We have an influence on our student-athletes' lives. Our words to them matter, so we have to be careful what we say to these young people. They are dealing with middle and high school, the two places where everyone's self-identity is tested over and over again. Our athletes will become what they think they are, so we have to be sure that our words convey their worth, both as members of the team and as individuals. In this episode, Coach Kenneth Loyd reminds us that everything speaks to something, and everybody is somebody.
Key Takeaways:
-Everything speaks to something.
-Everybody is somebody.
-You are what you think you are.

There are a lot of reasons for finishing strong, such as showing your integrity by finishing through instead of at the line and pushing yourself to your limits so you can reach your goals. But perhaps one of the most important reasons to finish strong is this: Your finish line today will be your starting line tomorrow. In this episode, Mackey explains why and how to finish strong in everything that we do.
Key Takeaways:
-Your finish line today will be your starting line tomorrow.
-You start where the weakest teammate ends.
-When you learn how to finish strong in sports, you learn how to finish strong in life.

Most young people look at respect as something you earn, not something that is given to you. But this thinking is completely backward. We should respect others because of who WE are, not who they are. Respect is at the core of creating a team and school culture where it's not only okay, but expected that student-athletes will stand up and say "this is not right" with regards to sexual harassment.
In this episode, Jesse Mahler and Valencia Peterson discuss how coaching is a platform for preventing sexual harassment. There is a privilege that comes with being a coach, and we need to use that to our advantage to stop sexual harassment from happening in our schools.
Key Takeaways:
-Coaching is a platform for sexual harassment prevention.
-Respect looks like healthy communication and vulnerability.
-Repetition is everything.
Valencia Peterson is an assistant football Coach at Penn Wood Highschool in Pennsylvania and is the Founder of Open Door Abuse Awareness Prevention also known as ODAAP. Ownership is one of the keys to making sure our athletes stay in the game. In other words, if we want to keep them from quitting, and if we want them to play to their highest level, we've got to help them feel that they have a stake in our athletic program. When our athletes have ownership, they have passion, and with that passion, they will find success in sports and in life.
In this episode, Coach Tim Teykl explains why ownership is so important in athletics and other parts of life. Everything in sports mimics life, and if we can teach our athletes early what it feels like to take ownership and be passionate about their hard work, they will find success later in life, too.
Key Takeaways:
-When you're given ownership, you have passion.
-When you have passion, you can succeed.
-Everything in sports mimics what happens in life.

Your health limits how far you can go in life. When you're in poor health, it limits what you can do and the impact that you can have on others. That's not to say that illness or obesity will always prevent people from reaching their dreams or influencing their community. But it is true that the healthier you are, the further and faster you can go. Health isn't about just one thing, but to get healthy you do need to take one step in the right direction every day. In this episode, Mackey dives in on the importance of doing the work to get healthy.
Key Takeaways:
-The healthier you are, the further and faster you can go.
-The healthier you are, the longer and better you can serve.
-Take one step in the right direction every day.

Anger is a powerful emotion. It can destroy so quickly and so completely. And sometimes, what it destroys cannot be rebuilt. Anger can destroy relationships and entire lives. But the thing is, anger is also useful if it's used in the right way. When the destructive nature of anger is kept in check, it can be used for positive change. Angry indignation at the suffering or unfair treatment of others can help us create a new, more equal world. But we have to remember our Anger Rights, or that force for good will become the force of our destruction.
In this episode, Mackey breaks down the three Anger Rights and encourages us to remember that when we use our anger to lift other people up, to fight for equality, then we can bring about positive change.
Key Takeaways:
-You have the right to be angry, but your anger does not have the right to have you.
-You have the right to get angry, but its not right to get there too quick.
-You have the right to be angry, but you don’t have the right to be disrespectful.

The team belongs to the athletes as much as it does to the coaches, and the team is bigger than athletes or coaches. Everyone is working together in service of the team. And if there are people who aren't working in service to the team, people who aren't fulfilling their roles, then the team breaks down. But if everyone has a We over Me mentality, there's nothing the team cannot accomplish. In this episode, Coach Dusty Crafton tells us several ways to bring the team together for the greater We.
Key Takeaways:
-Give your athletes ownership on the team.
-Establish a We over Me mentality.
-Dealing with a little pain and adversity is good for you.

The only way to finish strong is to give your best to the cause or goal straight through (not to) the finish line. There will be real consequences for our world if this generation of coaches fails to finish strong. You are that generation, and you have a great responsibility to your athletes, your family, and future generations to prepare the leaders in your locker rooms for the world they will face tomorrow.
Part of that preparation involves teaching tomorrow's leaders how to finish strong. In this episode, Mackey dives deep on what it means to finish strong and how to do it.
Key Takeaways:
-Change the mindset from a "have to" to a "get to" mentality.
-If you're going to finish strong, you cannot do it alone.
-Continue giving your best, even when it costs more than you thought it would.

Having a 5-star talent is not as important as having a 5-star character. Talent cannot take you very far without a solid foundation of good character. Talent can also only take you as far as your character will allow. So in that sense, character is both a foundation and ceiling. This is just one of the things that makes character so important in our lives. In this episode, Mackey breaks down why character matters.
Key Takeaways:
-Character is a talent amplifier.
-Character is both a ceiling and a foundation.
-Character will limit how far your talent can take you.

Culture is a mindset. When your mindset is that your team's culture matters and the values you talk about settle into your daily mindset as guiding principles, that mindset, that culture, becomes evident to your athletes so that they can share in it. When athletes see that the athletic program is important to their coaches, the program will become important to them, too. In this episode, Coach Billy Mathis discusses the importance of culture in building a successful athletic program.
Key Takeaways:
-Culture is a mindset.
-Athletes can hold each other accountable.
-Kids will run through a brick wall for you if they know that you love them.

Systemic racism is a topic too big for any one person to tackle. That's why a movement grew on social networking sites and turned into protests in the streets. The movement is people, black and white and everything in between, coming together to say "This is wrong and I will not remain silent." In this episode, Mackey addresses current events related to systemic racism and his perspective on why we have to keep fighting until it's gone.
Key Takeaways:
-We have to call right right and wrong wrong. We cannot allow wrong to be normal.
-Saying “I don’t see color” is not helpful in fighting racism, it just normalizes everyone else’s experience to your own.
-What starts on Twitter can't stay on Twitter.

Thomas Edison is credited with saying some version of the quote: "Opportunity is missed my most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like hard work." In this episode, Mackey encourages us to look past the overalls to the opportunity underneath. Yes, there will be hard work involved. But if we do today's work today, we will reap the benefits of growth tomorrow.
Key Takeaways:
-If we want to get where we want to go, we have to do what we don't want to do.
-Do not miss the opportunity of growth because you aren't willing to put in the work.
-Do today's work today.

Our athletic programs aren't just here to let kids run around with a ball. The program exists to make our student-athletes better, to help them become the men and women who will lead our society in the future. That's why we can't just talk about our values and personal codes, we have to actually live it out so our athletes can see it clearly.
In this episode, Coach Chris Fisher breaks down the phrase OneFamily, which he uses to guide his athletic program and his life. It's a partial acronym that stands for: Faith, Attitude, Mental Toughness, Integrity, Love, and You.
Key Takeaways:
-You can't just talk about OneFamily, you have to live it.
-Let your yes be yes and your no be no.
-It's a calling to be an educator and a coach.

We tend to think that if we practice long enough, hard enough, the thing we're doing will be easy. But the truth is, things don't get easier, we just get stronger. And the only way to get stronger is to fail. That's right. It is not our successes that help us improve so that the hard things seem easy, it is our failures that propel us to that place. In this episode, Mackey breaks down why the most important lesson we learn from athletics is how to fail.
Key Takeaways:
-Athletics teach us how to fail.
-Things will go wrong in the game of life.
-Things don't get easier, we just get stronger.

Often we view complaints as negatives. After all, complaints tell us what is wrong with the world, and who wants to be reminded of that? But this thinking is backwards. Complaints don't just tell us what's wrong. Complaints offer an invitation to make wrong things right. In this episode, Mackey reminds us that life is based on how we see things and that we can choose to see complaints as invitations for change.
Key Takeaways:
-Complaining is an invitation to get involved in something that is not right.
-Life is full of invitations and complaints.
-Whether you see invitations or complaints depends on your choice.

Discipline and accountability go hand in hand. We must hold our athletes accountable for their actions both when they are with us and when they are away. Our athletes represent our athletic program, which is essentially our brand. They are representing us when they are in other teachers' classes and when they are out with their friends. We hold them accountable for their behavior regardless of where they are because that is how we will instill discipline in them. In this episode, Coach Claude Mathis breaks down why discipline and accountability should be high priorities for any coach.
Key Takeaways:
-Your athletes represent your athletic program.
-All coaches should be held accountable.
-Do not let the little things pass.

We all need a little encouragement from time to time--encouragement to look out for our FAMILY, encouragement to help us through tough situations, and encouragement to remind us of what's most important in life. In this episode, Mackey serves up these three types of encouragement. He reminds us that every member of your family (whether that's blood relatives or sports fam) is important to making the family successful. He encourages us to remember that our response is always within our control. And he encourages us to tell the people we love how proud we are of them. Ready to be encouraged?
Key Takeaways:
-We are only as strong as the weakest one of us.
-Tell the people you love that you are proud of them, and be specific about why.
-We can't choose our circumstances but we can choose our response.

Adversity reveals a lot about us. It reveals the level of our integrity, our humility, and our toughness. During times of adversity, business is not as usual. That's why we are called to show either the best of us or the worst of us, depending on if we default to serving others or serving ourselves. In this episode, Mackey discusses how adversity exposes our true character and how we can make times of adversity reveal the best of us.
Key Takeaways:
-We get great at what we give reps to.
-Tough times don't last, but tough people do.
-Tough people win.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our athletes is helping them understand that they are playing for family. When they see their teammates as brothers and sisters, there is no limit to what they will do for each other. The greatest edge you can give your athletic program is a culture founded on family. In this episode, Coach Jeremy Reed discusses building a greater culture from the inside out.
Key Takeaways:
-You have the greatest edge when you have a greater culture.
-You have to understand the community in which you are coaching.
-Be consistent with your standards and expectations.

We spend a lot of time thinking about being champions on the field, but what about being champions in the home? How do we become championship fathers? How do we teach the boys in our athletic programs and under our roofs to be championship fathers when they grow up?
In this episode, author, mentor, and friend, Carey Casey tells us that being a championship father starts with being present for your kids. He reminds us that millions of boys and girls go to bed every night without a father in the house. You can't be a father to all of them, but you can be a championships father to the children in your life.
Key Takeaways:
-Always be teachable and be around people who will take you further than you can take yourself.
-Championship fathers listen to their kids and are present for their kids.
-Encourage your athletes and children to deal with disappointment.

Thinking about what you can't do or don't have is easy, but useless. Thinking about all the good you could do if you were in a different location is also useless. If you want to make a difference and have an impact, focus instead on what you CAN do with what you DO have, right where you are standing. Remember: Leaders always lead, regardless of circumstances or resources.
Key Takeaways:
-It's easy but useless to focus on what you can't do.
-Focusing on what you can do will get you infinitely further.
-Leaders need to focus on what they can do, not what they can't do.

Every person you meet is in one of three places:
-Having a bad time
-About to have a bad time
-Recovering from a bad time
It is guaranteed that you will have bad days and rough times. There may even be days when you struggle to get out of bed. Those rough times and the struggles you face can either anchor you down or be the catalyst that propels you forward.
The choice is yours. Will you choose to let your struggles make you stronger?

Choose to view adversity as an opportunity
Own your mistakes so they don’t own you

Adversity is something we're teaching our athletes to deal with every day on the field. The goal is to prepare them for when unexpected adversity strikes outside of athletics. We are all dealing with an adverse season right now. We can either rail against it, or put into practice what we've been trying to teach our athletes all this time: Adversity is just an opportunity for growth. In this episode, Mackey encourages us to use this time of adversity to become better, to invest in ourselves, and to connect with our athletes and other coaches (from a distance).
Key Takeaways:
-Show athletes that you care about them as people.
-Use this time to grow in your leadership.
-Don't forget to take care of yourself.

Love is not weakness. Love is strength. Love makes you willing to die to self for your teammates. It makes you willing to serve them. Without love, there's no service, no selflessness, and no sacrifice As we've said many times before, sacrifice is required to find success. When you love your team and your teammates, you will sacrifice for them, and together, you will succeed.
In this episode, Coach Kirk Sundberg explains that real love is sacrifice. And, he reminds us that love brings strength and success to our team.
Key Takeaways:
-Do not be timid or fearful.
-Coaches must be both loving and tenacious.
-Love is not weakness. Love is strength.

“Because I said so” isn’t just a statement of authority. It’s also a statement of dependability: Because I said so, it will be done. Dependability is all about doing what you say you are going to do. Dependability will always beat ability because no matter how much talent you have, it’s worthless if you can’t be depended upon to do what you said you would do.
In this sample from the 2Words Character Development curriculum, Mackey lays out the difference between ability and dependability, and why dependability will win every time.
Key Takeaways:
-Talent does not exempt you from the getting the little things right.
-When you are dependable in the little things, you’ll be dependable in the big things.
-The most important ability you can ever have is dependability.

Celebration is contagious. When we see someone smile or laugh, we want to smile and laugh with them. Complaining is also contagious, though. When we hear someone complain about the weather, it makes us realize it's too hot, too muggy, or too something when moments before we were enjoying a beautiful day. When we hear someone complain about a situation we're coping with well, we suddenly find it harder to cope.
The words that we use and the things that we do are contagious to others. In this episode, Mackey and Colton challenge us to think about this contagiousness and what we are infecting the people around us with. Are we infecting them with celebration or complaints?
Key Takeaways:
-What we say and do is contagious.
-The work you do matters.
-When you celebrate others, you find even more things to celebrate.

Team values that aren't put into practice are just words. That said, having an easy-to-remember acronym to consistently remind athletes of our team values can help athletes to turn those words into action.
In this episode, Coach Sam Harrell breaks down the acronym FAST, which they use at Ennis High School to talk about their team values. FAST stands for: Faith, All in, Selfless, and Toughness. They put this acronym on t-shirts, encourage each other to be a FAST team, and talk about the values everyday. FAST reminds athletes to have faith in each other and something greater than themselves, to be all in with their effort, to be selfless and giving, and to be both mentally and physically tough.
Key Takeaways:
-It's amazing how much you can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.
-Instill the values in athletes today so they will keep that mentality when they leave.
-FAST: Faith, All in, Selfless, Toughness

Our work adds up a little at a time until we reap big results. But if we don't put in our little bit of work today, that little bit rolls to tomorrow, which pushes tomorrow's work to the next day, just like a snowball begins to gather mass as it rolls down the hill, until the work has piled up into an overwhelming heap.
It's easy to put things off until tomorrow. It's easy to schedule and plan for what you will do tomorrow instead of just doing it today. It's much harder to execute today on what you said you would do today. In this episode, Mackey and Colton discuss the whys and hows of doing today's work today, rather than putting it off for tomorrow.
Key Takeaways:
-Don't let your worry outpace your work.
-Do today's work today, or it will have an effect on tomorrow.
-Focus on the work that is right in front of you.

In this episode with Coach Mike Fecci of Mckinney North High School, Coach Fecci stresses that winning games is a byproduct of a great team culture. The young man or woman must be built first; then the winning part will take care of itself.
It all starts with our athletes' character. The more opportunities we give them to get character reps, the better their character will be, and the more wins and success that will come as a result. As Coach Fecci tells us, "Do right, act right, and everything will be right."
Key Takeaways:
-Give your athletes opportunities to get character reps.
-Think of ways outside the box to serve those who serve you.
-Do right, act right, and everything will be right.

Our athletes have the capacity to become tough, gritty individuals. As coaches, we have the capacity to help them get there. We want to teach our athletes to be mentally tough, to do the right thing in everything that they do, and to succeed at challenges they think are beyond them.
During this interview, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Zac Harrell of Athens ISD discusses the importance of putting our athletes in tough situations so we can help them become mentally tough. Coach Harrell also stresses that we should never ask our athletes to do something that we haven't done because the example we set for our athletes is that important.
Key Takeaways:
-Never ask athletes to do something you haven't already done.
-Sacrifice for the team.
-Teach athletes to be mentally tough.

Inside every struggle there is tremendous opportunity. We live in interesting times, and interesting is often a euphemism for difficult. But even in these interesting, difficult times, there are opportunities everywhere. Opportunities to affect others. Opportunities to get up and do something. Opportunities to step beyond our comfort zone so that we can grow.
In this episode, our guest Damon West poses the question: where is your opportunity right now? We are all deep in the struggle of our times, but there is an opportunity. We just have to seek it.
Key Takeaways:
-Not one person can reach everybody, but everybody can reach somebody.
-Inside every struggle there is tremendous opportunity.
-Vulnerability is a strength.

Description:
Second-in-command, second chair, assistant coach. These are all ways of describing the same thing: a leader. An assistant coach is just as valuable to the team as the head coach. A second chair has a responsibility to help the first chair become his best, just as the first helps the second to be the best they can be. Just because a leader isn't the top dog doesn't mean they aren't important, valued, or influential.
In this episode, Colton and Mackey dive in on leading from the second chair. When the first and second chair are divided, the rest of the team can't find any unity, either, so Colton and Mackey also discuss how to respond when you disagree with a higher up's decision.
Key Takeaways:
-The second chair seat is not a second place trophy.
-The assistant coach helps the head coach become the best they can be, and vice versa.
-At the end of the day, it's your job to champion your leader's decision and execute it at 100%.

Description:
Coaches are under a lot of pressure to get wins and have model athletes, but there isn't necessarily a lot of praise or thanks for all the hard work that goes into meeting those demands. But coaches are helping to develop the adults of tomorrow. Many of us had an influential coach in our middle or high school years who left a lasting impact on our lives.
Coaches who are authentic. Coaches who speak truth, not because it is popular, but because it is right. Coaches who teach athletes to use their voice for change. Coaches who are intense about what matters. Coaches don't always get the praise they deserve, but the role they play in young people's lives is worth it.
We're joined this episode by Angus Reid to talk about coaches, athletes, and using your voice for change.
Key Takeaways:
-Coaches are authentic and speak truth because it is right.
-What you put on social media makes a difference.
-If you ever have a platform in life, use it to make change.

In the midst of uncertainty with school and business closures, Mackey and Colton bring us this episode, where they discuss accepting reality, taking action, and being there for our athletes and our F.A.M.I.L.Y.
Mackey and Colton want to remind us that it's okay to be blindsided by the current situation because no one could have seen this coming. But what is not okay is to stay blindsided and lamenting that things are not as they should be. Our student-athletes deserve better from us than that.
During this crisis, we can band together and go the extra mile for our students. We may be stuck at home, but we're not powerless. We can and we will go the extra mile to continue coaching beyond the game.
Key Takeaways:
-Use this time to go the extra mile with your students.
-Make sure you're taking care of your F.A.M.I.L.Y.
-Accept the reality of the situation and take action.

The people that we surround ourselves with at work and in our personal lives have a huge influence on us. That's why it's so important to surround ourselves with people who do things the right way and who help us grow personally and professionally This is one of many insights provided by Coach John Walsh of Denton ISD in this interview. Coach Walsh also discusses doing research to find an athletic program or head coach that is the right fit and growing within that program.
Key Takeaways:
-Discipline is what you're teaching athletes every day.
-Surround yourself with people who do things the right way.
-Find the athletic program that will help you grow the most.

Our team and school standards are what make us who we are. Everything runs more smoothly when coaches and athletes are doing the right things based on those standards. Our high standards give our athletes something to grab and hold onto when something goes wrong in their lives. It's an anchor for our student-athletes' lives where they can learn how to do hard things with integrity.
In this episode, Colton interviews Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Michael Waldie of Gonzalez ISD. Coach Waldie dives deep on being the best version of yourself, meaning what you say, and holding athletes to high standards.
Key Takeaways:
-Choose to be the best version of yourself every day.
-Everything in life has to be earned.
-You can't quit on your family, keep striving for them daily.

As coaches, we have to hold our athletes accountable for their actions. When they mess up a play in the middle of a big game, that's on them. After all, we're not the ones playing; they are. But, we have to remember that every kid responds to constructive criticism differently, so the way that we address accountability and hold each athlete accountable for their actions will be slightly different. To get to the point where we know how to hold each of them accountable, we have to know our athletes on an individual and personal level.
In this interview, Colton discusses accountability and knowing your athletes with Athletic Director and Wrestling Coach Bobby Cook of Duncan High School in Oklahoma. As Coach Cook remind us, the majority of coaching isn't about teaching kids to play a sport, it's about developing a growing human being.
Key Takeaways
-Hold your athletes accountable.
-Get to know your athletes on a personal level.
-Try your best to delete negativity because negativity loves company.

Your family isn't just your blood relatives or your spouse. Your family is also your friends, your co-workers, and, your athletes. Having a team that acts like a family means that everyone is valued, and everyone has a place in the program. When we focus on inclusion and togetherness, other values like hard work and competition are easier to drive home.
In this episode, head football coach Kyle Abshire of Carizo Springs High School talks us through building a family atmosphere where everyone is valued, as well as providing other great advice about learning from mentors and modeling mistakes.
Key Takeaways:
-Build a family atmosphere where everyone is valued and everyone has a place.
-Model owning your mistakes so your athletes will see it and do the same.
-Don't try to be the coach who mentored you. Be the coach you are.

Our athletes will not grow without challenges and adversity. They need obstacles in their path, so they can learn how to overcome natural opposition. The playing field isn't always fair--refs make mistakes and the other team might have better players than we do. But, life is not always fair either, and the field is a safe place for our athletes to learn this truth. Regardless of unfairness or adversity, our athletes are capable of learning and growing, and we just need to put them in positions where they can prove that to themselves.
In this interview with assistant athletic director and Girl's Basketball Coach Jade Allison of Bishop Kelly High School, in Tulsa, OK, you'll hear her views on creating obstacles and adversity for athletes, as well as advice for when to remove athletes from competition.
Key Takeaways:
-Your attitude affects your outcome.
-Control the controllables, and let the rest go.
-Create opportunities for your athletes to overcome adversity.

The role of a coach is intricate, even complex. It seems like it should be very simple: Set drills, work out plays, review tape, play the game, rinse and repeat. But if all we focus on is the X's and O's, or the nitty-gritty details of the sport, we are missing the mark.
As Coach John Contrucci, Athletic Director of Junction ISD reminds us in this episode, coaching goes beyond running plays and scoring points. As coaches, we fill a void in the lives or our athletes by modeling appropriate behavior for them and helping them to rise to a higher standard.
Key Takeaways:
-Coaches must model a good work ethic and lead by example.
-Coaches fill in the gap in their athletes' lives.
-Love for athletes and passion for encouraging others are the keys to good coaching.

Without truth, there can be no trust. Without trust, there can be no relationship. Without a relationship, there can be no chemistry. Truth and trust are the foundation of any team. Without truthful feedback, no trust will form, and without trust, there is no progress, no growth, and no wins. For that reason, "Speak the Truth" is one of the laws of the Depend Upon Brothers (DUB) concept used by the football program at Whitehouse High School.
This concept, or code of conduct, makes it clear to athletes what is expected of them, so that they can execute to the best of their abilities within that framework. In this episode, Colton discusses the DUB concept in detail with Athletic Coordinator, Head Football and Boys' Track Coach Marcus Gold of Whitehouse High School, where the DUB concept is lived daily.
Key Takeaways:
-Everything starts with the coach.
-If there's no trust, there's no relationship.
-Trust comes from believing in each other.

Your athletic program won't look like the one in the next town over, the one is another district, or really any other program in existence. In fact, your program this year won't look like the program from last year. Why? Because your athletes this year don't look like your athletes from last year. The athletes are what make your program different. That's why you build relationships with your athletes, coach them based on their individual strengths, and create game and practice strategies based on athletes' needs and abilities.
In this interview with Head Softball and Assistant Volleyball Coach Kristina Stephens of Bells High School, we break down why it's always the athletes who are (or should be) at the heart of the athletic program. They are the reason why we are here, so let's treat them that way!
Key Takeaways:
Coach each player differently.
Build relationships with your athletes.
Let athletes know you are there for them.

Can you describe your coaching style in five words or less? The key to consistency in your coaching is knowing how you coach. You have to have a clear picture of what you want to accomplish with your athletic program, so that you can pass that message on to your coaching staff. Once the coaching staff gets it, that vision will trickle down to your athletes.
In this episode of the Coach 360 podcast, Colton talks to Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Ricklan Holmes of Tyler High School about self-knowledge and consistency in coaching.
Key Takeaways:
-Understand that correction is to make you better.
-Be willing to understand and work with your coaching staff.
-Be consistent.

Athletes perform better when they are confident in themselves and trust in their coaches. So how do we, as coaches, help our athletes get to that point of confidence and trust, so our athletes can go on to reach their full potential in sports and life?
During this interview with Head Volleyball Coach and Girls' Athletic Director Clark Oberle of Decatur High School, Colton and Coach Oberle discuss how to build confidence in our athletes. Some of the suggestions you will hear about include: making practice fun and personal, helping athletes focus on their individual roles, and teaching athletes the dedication needed to sacrifice for their team.
Key Takeaways
-If you focus on building your athletes, the wins will come.
-Each player has a role, and they more they focus on that role, the more confident they will be.
-Athletes will try their hardest when practice is fun and personal.

When your program is founded on the vision, standards, and values that you live by, you give the athletes in your care an opportunity to learn how to be great men and women. It's not just the big ideas like: Be better than you were yesterday, Don't settle for good enough, and Treat others with respect. Those ideas are communicated through sports, but it's not the big ideas that actually hit home; instead, it's the daily repetition and living of those ideas that makes the difference in your athletes' lives.
During this interview with Head Football Coach Carlos Lynn of Cedar Hill High School, Coach reminds us that we only have a small window of time to impact our student-athletes, so let's pour as much good into them as we can in the time that we have.
Key Takeaways
-The world is full of average; be above average.
-Be better today than you were yesterday.
-Focus more on the game of life.

Many coaches will not stay with one school or district for their entire career. Circumstances with the school or your family, as well as your own ambitions, can all lead you away from your current athletic program and athletes. It's a natural progression, and there may come a point where you have to make the hard decision to leave the student-athletes that you have poured so much into. When that time comes, remember that kids are kids, and they all need a good coach to pour valuable lessons into them.
In this interview with Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Brian Herman of Marble Falls High School, Colton and Coach Herman dive into ways to make connections with students and leave them with a legacy of toughness and discipline when your time with them is over.
Key Takeaways
-Do the best you can where you are.
-Reward kids for exhibiting toughness and discipline.
-Make connections with athletes, build relationships.

Being an athlete is a major commitment. You don't get time off from it. Even if you are injured, you support your team from the bench and you uphold the team values off the pitch. Our student-athletes need to understand that whether or not they're wearing the jersey, once they join our team, they are an athlete, and there are expectations for that - Expectations that they put character first, learn from their mistakes, and demonstrate self-discipline.
During this interview with Coach Ged Kates of Birdville ISD, we are reminded that being an athlete doesn't stop when we leave the field and being a person of character doesn't stop when we're behind closed doors.
Key Takeaways:
-There are no days off when it comes to being an athlete or a person of character.
-We're all one decision away from the worst decision of our lives, so let character always be your guide.
-Kids want something to believe in, something to demand something of them, and someone to love them.

Coaches and athletes are motivated by a scoreboard. Sometimes that scoreboard reflects the game results, but sometimes it reflects an A/B honor roll percentage. The difference is in the focus of the athletic program. Are we in it just for the on-field wins and trophies? Or, do we understand that there is something more important than sports going on here?
In this interview with Coach Ray Zepeda, District Athletic Director of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Coach Zepeda explains why the focus should be on academic excellence and how wins in the classroom lead to wins on the field.
Key Takeaways
- An athletic director's most important function is to provide service and communication to coaches.
- Success begets success. When you're successful in the classroom, you'll be successful on the field.
- Coaches must hold their athletes accountable to supporting the school's academic mission.

Coaches aren't successful unless their athletes are successful. That's why we push our athletes so hard in practice and off-season. That's why we yell and assign burpies. We want to see them grow and succeed. But, as Coach Rod Blount of Navarro ISD reminds us during this interview, there's more to helping our athletes become their best selves than just yelling. We've also got to love them. If we love our athletes well, they will run through a brick wall for us. Love is how we make the greatest impact in our role as coaches.
Key Takeaways
-A coach isn't successful unless his or her athletes are successful.
-Always look for the best in your situation instead of what's next.
-Push your athletes to be the best version of themselves they can be.

If we expect our athletes to keep returning day after day, game after game, and year after year, they need to want to be here.
Coach Gerald Brence of Plano ISD asks coaches to remember that our athletes want encouragement, fairness, and organization. If we can give them that, we can make athletics the highlight of their day.
During this interview, Coach Brence also discusses the four traits that he believes the best coaches possess.

Trust has to be built before you can make any major changes after you transition to a new-to-you athletics program. See, the program is new to you, but it’s already been established by others. If you try to bring in a wrecking ball on day one, it’s going to ruffle feathers. Sometimes feather-ruffling is necessary, but you won’t know until you observe the status quo.
In this interview with Coach Zack Hudson, head football coach of Mabank High School, Coach discusses how to get a feel for a new athletic program after making a transition.
Key Takeaways:
-Check in with the community before making changes to a new-to-you program.
-Set clear and concise expectations for athletes.
-Athletes can and should hold each other accountable.

How you weekend has a direct impact on how you perform during the week. It’s not separate from the rest of the week or from your personal identity. When you weekend poorly (i.e. wasting time, doing things you shouldn’t), it’s a symptom of a deeper issue with the balance in your life.
Leaders rise above the TGIF mentality. They recognize that although the things you do might be different on the weekend, how you do things shouldn’t be any different from the weekly hustle. In this episode, Mackey breaks down five steps to help you weekend well.
Key Takeaways:
-If it’s not right, don’t do it.
-The weekend doesn’t give you permission to avoid taking care of responsibility.
-Reflect on the prior week so you can do better in the week ahead.

According to Coach Eric de los Santos of Irving High, athletes want discipline because it equals freedom. The team at 2 Words definitely agrees. Coaches expect things from their athletes that the kids might not expect of themselves, and discipline is the only way to make it a reality. Discipline gives us the space to learn and grow within boundaries that keep us safe and focused. It gives us the freedom to succeed.
In this episode, Coach Eric also gives advice on working with athletic program and community traditions, learning from mistakes, and creating leaders through athletic programs.
Key Takeaways:
-There are always lessons to be learned from mistakes.
-If you want leaders, you have to help create them.
-Understand that you are learning every single day.

Lao Tzu, Oprah Winfrey, and Charles Darwin all have something in common: They get the importance of time management. Time is a precious, finite resource. Each minute that passes can’t be retrieved, and how we spend our time is a direct reflection of what our priorities are. In this episode, Mackey dissects three quotes that give us insight into how we can make the best use of our limited time.
Key Takeaways:
-How you spend your time is your choice.
-The day will come when you run out of time.
-When you say no to something, you say yes to something else, and vice versa.

If you want your athletes to invest their time, energy, and effort in your program, you have to invest in your athletes. Continuously building relationships with your student-athletes allows you to speak to them on a deeper level than pep talks and plays.
In this episode, Coach Chance Westmoreland of Argyle High School shares why building relationships is crucial to a sound athletic program. He also provides tips and techniques for how to build and strengthen those relationships.
Key Takeaways:
-Model and set the example for your athletes.
-Challenge your athletes to make them better players.
-Always build relationships with your student-athletes.

When you start something new, the very novelty of it makes everything exciting. You’re curious and ready to see where this new activity can take you. But there will come a point when that stops. This is the point when motivation fades, and there’s a long slog to get through before habit makes this hard thing easy.
To honor your integrity, you have to do what you said you would do, even when it’s hard or the novelty has worn off. In this episode from a ruck in Cedar Hill, Mackey explores why doing what you said you would do is so important to yourself and to your athletes.
Key Takeaways:
-Do what you say you are going to do.
-Novelty and curiosity are not enough to create a habit because they will eventually fade.
-Recognize that your athletes are watching your actions.

Investing in your athletes is sort of like investing in a 401k for retirement. The more you put in, the more you will get out later. That investment is particularly important when you join a new program. The athletes don’t know you yet, and they probably won’t be ready for you to drop a 50 lb. hammer on them in practice.
In this episode, Colton and Head Football Coach Kurt Traylor of Lee High School in Tyler ISD discuss what it means to invest in your athletes and how the PRIDE mentality helps frame the program at Lee HS.
Key Takeaways:
-When athletes don’t know you, you can’t come in a be hammer right away.
-Be positive and find the positive.
-The more you invest in your athletes, the more you can draw from them.

No matter what season you’re in, it will come to a finish. High school ends, college ends, eventually even the pros retire. Every season will finish, but you choose how you will finish it. Will you finish strong—blowing past the finish line? Or will you have a meh finish where you reach the line, but not at full steam?
How you finish is how you set yourself up for success. You’ll have to finish; there’s no choice about that. But there is a choice in how. Remember these two words: Finish Strong.
Key Takeaways:
-Finish strong in the little thing, and you’ll train yourself to finish strong in the big things.
-What you do today matters for tomorrow, so don’t quit!
-Everyone will finish, but not everyone will finish the same. It’s a choice.

Things won’t always go our way. During tough times, our primary job as coaches is to be there to support our athletes. We can help them grow through the struggle as long as we stand firm and support each other.
This inspiring message and more comes from Coach Travis Reeve, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Cuero High School. In this episode, Coach Reeve tells us about his team’s phrase “uncommon men win” and their four core values.
Key Takeaways:
-Ever person has a chance to make a difference and to influence the world.
-If you develop the person, the development of the athlete will come, too.
-You can tell what is most valuable to your team by what you are most intentional about.

In this episode, Coach Fish shares his program values, including discipline, relating to peers, and responding to our emotions. He tells us why being detail-oriented is a valuable skill for coaches and players. He also gives advice such as the importance of learning a team’s identity when you start with a new program.
Key Takeaways:
-Be driven by the process, not the results.
-Both coaches and athletes should learn to be detail-oriented.
-Understand the team identity before anything else.

It does no good to be a 5-star athlete if you have 0-star character. The same is true for any area of life. When you’re 5-star in one area and 0-star in another, it shows that you are compartmentalizing your life.
The people who compartmentalize are the ones who live with the greatest disappointments. So, if you want to find success on the field and in life, stop compartmentalizing and focus on developing 5-star character.
Remember: Your character drives and influences every area of your life. In this episode, Mackey breaks down the five things that people with 5-star character get right.
Key Takeaways:
-Character is more important than talent, technique, or test scores.
-Hard work has to be done in areas where you know you have to grow.
-The greatest ability a person can have is dependability.

The issues and solutions discussed include: holding athletes accountable for mistakes, fighting to keep players engaged in the program, and hiring the right people.
Key Takeaways:
-Hold athletes accountable for mistakes so they learn how to change
-Don’t lose sight of why you’re a coach: for the students
-One of the most important things a head coach does is hire good people

How much negative self-talk do our student-athletes experience everyday? Probably more than we suspect, since most of that negative self-talk is happening in their heads where we can’t hear it or correct it. We may never know how much negative self-talk our athletes are dealing with, but we can help them overcome it.
This episode of Coach 360 provides tips and ideas for how to encourage our student-athletes to move beyond negative self-talk. We want to help them re-draft the narrative they tell themselves, so they can realize the great potential we see in them.
Key Takeaways:
-Encourage athletes to see what they don’t see in themselves.
-Invest in our athletes by walking alongside them in their journey.
-Challenge athletes to go for the big challenges.

During this interview with Coach Jonathan Lamb of Leander ISD, Colton and Coach discuss how to build deeper relationships with athletes, coaches, and parents. The first step is being authentic because that opens the door for developing deeper relationships.
Along with authenticity, we build deeper relationships with our athletes by knowing them beyond the sport. We want to know: What other activities are they into? Who are they really?
When the student-athlete’s parents realize you have an authentic relationship with their child, it forms a deeper relationship with the parents, too. Then, they are more likely to give you the freedom to challenge their child. As we all know, challenge is necessary for growth.

How do you get your athletes to go above and beyond? How do you encourage them to be successful?
According to Coach Brad LaPlante of Hutto High School, you do it through living what you teach, so that you lead by example. Communication is the key to teaching new skills and encouraging character-driven behavior. But all the talking in the world is useless if your own actions as their coach fail to drive the message home.
Let your actions drive the message of going above and beyond to find success.
Key Takeaways:
-Recognize your athletes’ accomplishments on and off the field.
-Lead by example.
-Ask athletes to make decisions based on Faith, Family, Future, or Football.

You know the importance of coaching beyond the game, but what does that look like practice?
For starters, coaching beyond the game means being intentional with everything that you do. It means being present for your athletes so they can see and mirror your actions. It means teaching them how to interact with other people, including giving a good handshake and expressing gratitude.
In this episode, Mackey speaks about coaching beyond the game, beyond the locker room, to impact your student-athletes’ lives and futures.
Key Takeaways:
-Great coaches are intentional in everything they do.
-When you coach beyond the game, athletes mirror their coaches.
-A strong handshake is essential.

During an interview with Coach Tim Russell, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for Harmony High School, Coach shared that the team is a family built on accountability and trust.
The team has to love each other enough to call each other out when they are wrong - to hold each other accountable. That commitment to the truth, even when it’s tough, builds trust that strengthens the bonds of family.
The family atmosphere of the team is the foundation for character building in the Harmony athletic program because Coach knows that if you win off the field, you also win on the field, and more importantly, you win in the game of life.
Key Takeaways:
The team is a family.
The better you serve, the better leader you will be.
When you win off the field, you win in life.

Mackey and Colton talk positive pressure and the fact that pressure in itself is neither inherently bad or good, but it is your response, your outlook that creates it into a bad or good situation.
Believe it or not, stress is actually a good thing. Stress can keep you moving forward on the right path. It takes time to reach your goal, to win a state championship, to build a business, and so in order to stop you from being burnt out, pace yourself. Slow and steady wins the race!

Today we have a very important and special repeat episode. This episode was one of the most memorable podcasts we have had the privilege of hosting. A few weeks ago, Texas high school football lost one of the great, Coach WT Johnston.
Coach Johnston talks about the importance of setting the stage the first practice by explaining the responsibility to the community and the team each player has when he has the uniform off and on.
Early during his coaching career, Coach Johnston was diagnosed with a condition that affected both his heart and his lungs. After being diagnosed and being on a waiting list for a transplant for over a year, the time came for him to undergo surgery. He underwent the surgery and soon after, the doctors realized that the organ had began to reject his body, which has been the case for only 15 people in the world. With his odds balancing, Coach was determined to get better. With no one ever have surviving this disease, Coach has continued to power through adversity and three years later, is coaching football, dedicating his life to changing the lives of his athletes.
Coach talks about how he feels lucky to be able to go through his life and see the impact he's made and the people he has encouraged before he dies. He talks about understanding that adversity will come and when you face adversity you have to look at it head on, avoid going around it, and go right through it.

Mackey and Colton share the idea that service and influence lead to success. When you invest into your community, they will invest in you.
Mackey shares some details on a recently establish summit 2Words is hosting called LEAD 2019. LEAD is an all day student athlete leadership summit where 2Words brings in Mackey and other phenomenal speakers for an all day event.
As some seasons come to a close, it is easy to get caught up in fixing what was wrong this past season and getting stuck in the "fix it" mindset. The more that we focus on a fix, the less we actually grow. The more that we focus on growing and being the fullness of who we can be, the more that we do just that.
Let your efforts be focused on growing into your potential, not merely fixing the things that are broken. Let the focus be on the growth, not the brokenness.

In our latest episode, Mackey talks about the idea of energy vampires.
There are so many people in our life who we're surrounded with who focus on what is wrong. These people literally suck the energy out of the team because of their negativity and doubt.

Mackey approaches this question from two different angles. He approaches it from a one on one standpoint. He gives us active ways in which we can individually, one on one, help solve this problem. He also gives us advice on how to deal with it from the team level.

What is the thing that you are living for?
What is the thing that is bigger than the scoreboard, that is bigger than the status, bigger than the here and now that you're fighting for?
Your future self is dependent on your present self making the right choices, right now.
Stay on guard, and make sure that your belief statement, that deeper alignment thing is congruent with your actions. It's so easy to sit back and talk about what you want to do and who you want to be at the end of the day, but that is NOT possible without carrying out the actions to improve the current you now.
Be aware that the actions you are making today are in a certain area of your life that will affect your future self.

In our latest episode, we are bringing one out from the Mackey Speaks Leadership Journal archive. This episode is power-packed, so make sure a pencil is at hand!
Mackey talks about the idea of going the extra mile, and when you go the extra mile, your impact will be amplified. When you are willing to go the extra mile, when you are willing to do things that others are not, they realize that you are different. When you are willing to go the extra mile for someone and invest in them, that return on investment will come back and be a far greater commitment than you could have ever imagined.
Takeaways from this podcast:
We often think of leadership as “going viral.” We think that if we can just get that one big position, or that one perfect podcast, or write the perfect blog post, then I’ll get noticed, and people will want to buy what we’re selling.
But the problem with that thinking is that yes, a “viral moment” may get you noticed, but unless you’ve been putting in that “extra mile” effort, there’s nothing under the surface. There’s nothing for anybody to follow.
You’ve got to invest in the long term OVER AND OVER. You build buy in with a lifetime of extra mile effort, not buy a quick, flash-in-the-pan viral moment.

In our latest episode, we are bringing you an archived favorite from the Mackey Speaks Leadership Journal.
Mackey is bringing us a message he heard from Coach Braxton of Howard Payne University while out on the West Texas Tour a few months ago. Coach said something that made Mackey grab his pencil and start writing.
Coach said that whether you excel or whether you fall short and don't reach your goals, other people are going to identify you as a part of a team, and we will represent a team in our actions.
Key Takeaways from this podcast:
Mackey encourages us to handle our anger, handle situations that may not be going our way well because there are people watching. We must continually remind ourselves to count the eyes. People will not only evaluate you, but they will begin to evaluate the brand that you represent, whether that is your team, your company, your faith, or your family.
If you are not okay with what you're doing being in the light, then don't let it live in the dark because what's in the dark will eventually come to the light.

Our latest episode is a special one. Mackey shares a curriculum lesson with us, Family Name.
Mackey shares how our lives are touched by several different traditions, which can come from our family, our community, our school, and our team.
As athletes, coaches, and parents, we have a responsibility to uphold these traditions, but also to enhance them. Tradition doesn’t determine what we do. What we do determines our tradition.
Mackey also shares that the traditions that we inherit don't define what we will become. They can serve as guides for the path we can follow if we choose, but the only thing that determines the traditions we pass on, the legacy we leave behind, is what we do today.

In our latest episode, Mackey is live with Marion County HS Coaches talking about the idea of coaching "long shelf life" traits.
As coaches, mentors, and parents, we are responsible for making sure our athletes and students are ready not only for the test next week, but for the tests they'll face in life. We need to make sure we are equipping them with the tools to be successful in life.
Some key takeaways from this podcast:
-It is important to do the right thing at the right time and not fear the consequences of doing so.
-It is our job as coaches and teachers to teach students that they are the most powerful person in their world.
-If you decide to have a bad attitude, that's on you. Your circumstances can't choose that for you.
As coaches, teachers, and parents, when you teach a student the power of commitment to their homework or to the team, you're teaching them how to be a successful mother or father. Everything you are teaching your students now, have a longer shelf life than you can ever hope or imagine.

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Head Basketball Coach David Peavy from Duncanville HS. Coach David Peavy is the new Head Coach at Duncanville High School. He was previously at Houston Dekaney where he coached them to a 34-4 record losing to Jesuit in the Class 6A Regional II Semifinals. They were also regional semifinalists in 2017 when they lost to Dallas Skyline after a 27-8 season.
Coach shares a little bit about his journey from leaving his past role as a coach in Houston to his current role and what that looked like stepping into an already developed program.
Some key takeaways from this episode:
Coach finishes up the episode by giving listeners a bit of advice he would have given himself when he first started his coaching career. Coach Peavy stresses the importance of not making it about you, the coach, but making it about them. It's so easy to get caught up in your season record and pushing your athletes hard in practice, but while that is important, it's necessary to not lose sight of developing them as people as well as athletes.

Coach Hulme took over at Midway in 2016 after leading Mansfield to the Class 6A state semifinals. This past year, in his second season at Midway, he took the Panthers to the Class 6A State Championship game.

In today's podcast, here are some key points to take away:
Coach gives us a look at what his Midway program looks like on the inside and how they view character development. He emphasizes the strengths of his assistant coaches and the impact they have on the program, as well as, the students that they teach.
Coach Hulme and his coaching staff make it a point to embody great character everyday, whether that be on the practice field, in the film room, or in the classroom. Character Development is more than just checking the box and doing the bare minimum. It is something that coaches need to live by, and Coach Hulme strives to do just that.
David Smoak has over three decades of experience covering sports in Texas and is a graduate of Tyler Junior College (’79) and Stephen F. Austin State University (’81). He became the program director and talk show host for ESPN-Central Texas (AM1660, 100.9FM, 106.9FM) in June 2010 after spending the spring of 2010 at ESPN Radio in Dallas.
Mackey joins "You Make the Call" on ESPN Central Tx 1660 with David Smoak and shares a little bit of his life and what it looked like creating 2Words Character Development.
Some key points to take away from this podcast:
We hope you're ready to go left lane, hammer down, full tilt boogie with us on this one.

And the Better is Best."
In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Ross McMurry, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Colmesneil HS.
This week will look a little different as Coach McMurry dives into his background and the struggles he faced before becoming the mentor, coach, and husband he is today.
In today's podcast, here are some key points to take away:
Coach talks about the struggles that are all too real in high schools today, from drugs and alcohol to broken homes. Coach experienced it all. He talks about his journey from being lost, not expected to have a successful future, to becoming a Head Football Coach and mentor to young men.
Coaches and mentors in his life helped change his trajectory, and now he has the opportunity to pay it forward and do the same for athletes in the same town he grew up in.
In our latest Coach 360 episode, Colton is live with Coach Chris Castillo, Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator from Dallas Sunset High School.
Coach took over at sunset 2 years ago and has since been on a mission to take Sunset to the next level. With an open enrollment district and a tough few seasons coach had 12 guys show up his first day of practice.
Coach talks about the importance of positivity in his locker room and the idea that leaders will always be followers in times throughout their lives. He encourages his players to be the best version on themselves every single day, from the locker room to the classroom, Coach Castillo pushes and encourages them.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live with Coach James Stagnitta, Head Coach of the Charlotte Hounds Major League Lacrosse team.
Coach dives into his career and shares with us this idea that coaching is different than leading. Coach explains that as he grew and developed as a coach, he grew as a leader as well. It's one thing to put people in set and tell them what to do, and it's another thing to truly develop them and lead them, then it's a lot easier to get them to do things as a group and collective unit.
Coach goes on to talk about culture and what the process for creating a team culture looks like for a professional organization. Coach says, "A good culture can make an average team very good, and a bad culture can break down a great team."
Coach shares some advice he would've given himself as a first year coach knowing what he knows now. He shares a little about empathy and putting yourself into you player's position by asking more questions and understanding what they're going through a little more instead of assuming how they feel and what they're going through.

We have a special episode for you as we reach the end of the week. We're sharing a clip from one of our curriculum videos, "Your Role". Colton shares with us a little bit about what this idea means to him and how sports were an outlet for him while he faced family struggles. This is an all too familiar story, that we know coaches see every day.
Mackey asks us a powerful question. He asks, "do you know your role?" Sometimes that question that a negative connotation. There's been a stigma associated with the idea of being a role player in comparison to a 5-star player. So many people believe that if they are a "role guy", then they are a no-star guy.
Every single one of us have a role to play, not only on a team, but in life.

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Todd Vesely, Executive Director at Ector County.
Coach shares his transition from being a coach to working towards an administrative role. He talks about how the common themes he used in coaching was easily translatable to other programs across the board, which is what drew him to a more administrative role.
Coach goes on to talk about what winning means to him. He believes winning is maximizing your performance and the performance of others, making as big of an impact in young people as you can. Winning can take on many different looks, but our real purpose is to help develop others.
Coach gives us a deeper understanding of the steps it takes to grow and develop leaders. One of the steps to becoming a great leader is giving your best every single day, which Coach talks about being the hardest thing you'll do.
Giving your best is being able to measure, whether you really gave your best, and the only person that really knows that is you. It becomes a habit if you continue to give your best day in and day out, never compromising for anything less. When you give a little bit less than your best, you are showing those around you that that is acceptable and becomes the culture that surrounds you. People will learn so much more from you by what you do rather than what you say.
Coach ends our podcast with a message to listeners. "A profound positive vision for the future, is the first and most important ingredient for success."
In our latest episode Colton and Mackey are talking about perspectives and the idea that having different perspectives than one another doesn't make one party right and one wrong.
Mackey shares a story about an experience he and his wife had while engaged and how the way they viewed the situation then is completely different than the way they view now looking back. He talks about the importance of experience shaping our perspective and how different situations can be looked upon differently as we mature and grow.
Mackey shares the idea that as we all step into different leadership roles, we will encounter others who will not share in our perspective or understanding of a situation due to the fact that they lack experience. When we find ourselves in a position where someone doesn't understand a decision that we're making or a strategy that we're implementing because they have not had the experience, there is an element that they have to simply trust the leader, but there's also the element that the leader has to be secure enough to explain and invite them into understanding an experience that they've not yet experienced.
When we take the time to take a step back from our perspective and step into someone else's, whether it be following a head coach's decisions as the assistant coach and not necessarily thinking their decision is right, we need to go all in and give it as much effort as if it's our own. That humbleness shows respect and that shows a willingness to learn. As a coach, you have shown the ability to be coachable in that moment.

In our latest episode, Colton is speaking with the Aggie Christian Business Leaders Club about his move from the security of a job at a fast-growing company to diving head first into a start up with his best friend.
Colton and Mackey go back about 10 years, and over that time as he was crafting his speaking ability, Colton was growing in business experience. Colton was connected to an amazing company really young and was fortunate to be apart of their growth from roughly 20 people to 220 at the time he stepped away for 2Words.
During that time he served for 5 years on their senior leadership team managing culture in our rapidly growing business. Colton shares how he ended up leaving the security of everything he had ever known to jump into a Start up with one of his closest friends, and mainly how they both decided to act in Faith, not fear.
In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Kent Jackson from Seminole High School.
Coach Jackson talks about his program's mantra, TR1BE. Which stands for:
Trust
Respect
Integrity
Belief
Enthusiasm
Coach talks about replacing the i with a 1 representing one tribe, one unit, one mission. Coach dives in a little deeper on what exactly it means to have belief and do everything with enthusiasm.
Coach talks about going from a winning season to a losing season and how as coaches, they continually tried instilling confidence in their players throughout the drought. He talks about the character and bond that was built during that season and how it positively impacted the athletes.
Coach shares about a new program they started where they find male mentors to meet with them each Friday morning on gamedays to talk about sports, life, and everything in between.
In our latest episode, Colton is live at Hamlin High School telling his story of putting in the hard work in hopes of winning in a power building competition.
Colton talks about putting in months and months of effort into this one moment, for seven minutes on stage competing. Colton talks about wanting more at the end of that competition. He thought that if he was putting in months of effort, endless amount of time and dedication, he should be reaching for an even bigger title.
Colton goes on to talk about the fact that at the end of his competitions, after competing at Worlds, he realized that no medal, no championship ring was going to make him a champion. The process makes you a champion.
Mackey and Colton are live in our newest episode of Coach 360 talking about Colonel Craig Flower's idea of tier 1 leadership.
Mackey shares the three questions that get asked of these tier 1 leaders:
1. Can they do it?
2. Will they do it?
3. Will others follow them when they do?
So many times we believe that in order to be the best leader, you have to be the best player on the field, and if you were the best player, then by default, you were the best leader.
In the book, "The Captains Class" Sam Walker unveils that after investigating all the seventeen sports dynasties from the past, the best leaders were not necessarily the best players, they were the glue that held the team together. They were capable, willing, and others followed them.
The best leaders aren't necessarily the best players or the best motivators, they are the players who can do a little bit of it all the best.
Mackey and Colton go on to talk about ways in which coaches can develop their players in certain areas they are lacking to create tier 1 leadership qualities within each of them.

This episode is a special one as Colton is live with retired Concordia Chicago's Head Women's Basketball Coach, Rusty Rogers, who was the coach of one of our very own 2W team members.
Coach Rogers shares his story and how his mindset on coaching was changed after the birth of his daughter. He talked about the shift from thinking solely about winning and records to focusing on using basketball as a facilitator for his ministry of creating a sense of confidence and character in his athletes.
Coach shares his coaching philosophy and the idea that being a successful coach means lighting a fire within each player, not lighting a fire beneath them. He also gives practical ways how coaches can navigate a shifting mentality from focusing on records to focusing on lives.
In our latest episode, we are bringing you the latest curriculum video, Tick Tock.
Life is often unpredictable, and you can never know or control what the next day will bring. You can control how you react to whatever the future holds. Even though you can’t predict exactly what struggle you will face, you know that some type of struggle is coming. Each day you can prepare for those unknown obstacles by building skills like commitment, determination, and discipline.
Those skills will help you make it through the heat of August and the pressures of the season, and they will help you make it through the unknown struggles that life will throw in your path.
Every moment is an opportunity to prepare for the next big event or the next struggle waiting just over the horizon. The clock is ticking.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at the Leadership Summit encouraging coaches and leaders to be of good character.
Mackey talks about how we can put rings on a finger and records on a wall, but all of those things are temporary and can be taken away at any given moment, but the one thing that cannot be taken away is your character.
As you help raise up the next generation, recognize that they will not learn from words on a paper or bold words painted in the locker room. They will learn from the quiet actions of your life. Winning is a by product of being successful. When you commit to being successful in the little things, success in your life and in who you are, others will see that and that will begin to shape who they are.
Simply talking about it isn't enough, our actions must follow. If we are different in private than we are in public, one day we will be exposed. Your private life will always become your public life.
In this episode of Coach360, Mackey interview LTC. JC Glick, U.S. Army, Ret. Mackey and LTC. Glick dive deep into the difference between capacity and capability, the power of teaching athletes "how to think" not just "what to think", and the importance of disciplined, nuanced thinking.
JC served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer for 20 years, primarily in special operations and special missions units with more than 11 combat tours. Since retiring from the military, JC has brought his innovative and unconventional thoughts on education, leadership and resiliency into the private sector, consulting with Fortune 500 companies, the NFL and professional sports teams including the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at the Leadership Summit encouraging coaches and leaders to stand firm in what they do and who they are.
Mackey talks about how easy it is being so close to the end of the year to want to coast and quit continually pursuing excellence in everything you do. If you are at that place in the year, at the place in your life when you want to give up and quit, stand firm.
Everyone has been in a place where your mind wants to tell you to keep at it and your heart wonders whether it's worth it or not. Mackey takes us through a similar battle he experienced in high school. He did everything right, he was bigger, faster, stronger than everyone else. He was in extracurriculars and had good grades, he did everything in his power to do what was right. Mackey gets a call from a college coach, all his dreams were coming true, and in the first play, playing in front of those coaches for the first time, he injured his knee, his dreams and goals seemed to slip through the very hand he thought he had held his future in. He did everything right, but everything still went wrong.
More than one of you know what that feeling is like, the feeling of continually pursuing excellence, making the right decisions, and everything still seeming to go wrong. Stand firm. You and your dream and everything you have worked for is worth fighting for. There is no shame in your struggle. There is no weakness in asking for help. The greatest demonstration of strength you could have is not pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, but it is peeling open your hands and inviting others into your struggle to help you.
In our latest #Coach360 episode, Colton is live with Coach Hank Semler from Aldine Senior High School.
Coach Semler talks about the challenges his program faced, not only through the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, but also through different obstacles placed before his team throughout the season.
Throughout the uncertainty of the season, Coach made it a point to create and maintain a mindset that you do not lose in a season, in life, or in a game until you GIVE UP. When you lose at anything it's because you quit trying. That mentality is a recurring theme you can see throughout their season. Each game, every single player fought until the bitter end and gave it everything they had.
In this episode of Coach360, Colton, and Mackey discuss just how damaging lowering your standard can be, the dark side of pride, and the greatest show of strength you can ever display.
The guys speak from the heart on this one, and you won't want to miss out!

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Herring of Refugio ISD.
Coach talks about the importance of not allowing circumstances to affect your performance, and shares the devastation that Hurricane Harvey had on his town. He talks about putting himself aside and being more than a coach for the athletes by sleeping in cots with them when their home was destroyed, beginning football early to keep them focused on something other than their hurt, and continually being a support system throughout the rebuilding process.
Coach goes on to talk about the fact that as coaches, they were going to allow the athletes to use Harvey as an excuse to not give their best each and every day. The way they had to go about discipline and enforcing rules looked a little different than normal because Coach ensured each athlete put his family first, but his expectations of every single one of them stayed the same.
Because of the coaching staff's attitude, the athletes were given a sense of hope during a time when most of their life felt unsure.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Anderson HS in what he says was one of the most electric places he's ever spoken at.
Mackey emphasizes that what we learn in sports will translate to the rest of our life. We learn things like integrity, doing the right things because they're the right things to do, and we don't fear the consequence of doing so. We live in a world where people stay quiet because they are afraid of the consequences of doing what's right. What we learn in sports is that there is POWER in standing up for the person on your right and on your left. You makes sacrifices for one another so you can come together as one and stand up for one another.
We learn about commitment and attitude and how to respond to situations through sports. There is not a person in the world more powerful than you. You are the most powerful person in the world because no one can make you have a bad attitude. There's not a person in the world that can control your effort but you. You cannot control the cards you've been dealt in life, you cannot control the outcomes, but you can always control your response.
In our latest #Coach360 episode, Mackey (@mackeyspeaks) is fired up about a recent quote he posted on Twitter talking about the idea that the very best coaches care too much about their players to not let them be their best.
The smallest things matter to the coaches that won't accept anything except each players' best. The best coaches accept nothing but the very best. They see in them what the athletes don't always see in themselves. They know and see where athletes could go when the athletes themselves don't believe they could get there. We all have someone who we would run through a brick wall for, someone who has shaped and molded us to be the people we are today.
Do you love YOURSELF enough to demand the best of you? The truth is, we're really great at loving other people and we're awful at loving ourselves. It only takes one person for doubt to be effective. The only person that has to have doubt for it to be effective is you, and the moment that you doubt yourself, you allow in the very worst language, the worst thoughts to creep in. If we cannot learn to love ourselves, we can never receive the love of other people. As much as you love other people, do things for other people, do the same for yourself.

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Head Coach Steve Wood at Aledo HS.
Coach Wood shares the importance he puts on himself to set expectations and be a model of his own expectations within his program. Athletes feed off of their coach's attitude, so having a solid group of men around them, not just men who are good at the X's and O's, but genuinely good hearted men, help create a character building culture within the team.
Coach goes on to talk about the importance he places on athletes valuing and respecting their differences and how the differences that set them apart. It all starts with the coaches, having that tight knit group of men, impacting and influencing the next generation of young men.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wills Point and Grand Saline.
Sometimes as leaders we think that we have to have all of the right answers, that we have to be without blemish, but the reality is that the mark of a good leader is not one who is above correction, but one who embraces it. There are twi different types of discipline: discipline of structure and discipline of correction. Discipline of structure is when you order your life to know what you say yes to and what to say no to. Discipline of correction says that when I make a mistakes, I'm going to own it.
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If we want to become leaders, we must surround ourselves with people that make us better. Not only to do you have to surround yourself with people that make you better, but you have to make other people better! You have to ask, "how can I make you better?" Don't exploit, don't leach on other people.
People like to put humility up as a token trait. They're quick to praise it, but slow to practice it. Humility is hard because it's not about me, but it's about you. Humility requires up to look beyond ourselves, but it doesn't require us to put ourselves down.
We have a special new #Coach360 episode as Mackey joins us live from the road.
Mackey talks about the powerful time he spent at Anderson HS and how he was jamming with a coach about the idea of being one team. It's so easy to believe we are one with our basketball or softball team, or with whichever team we are a part of, but it's rare for teams to has this "one team" mentality with regarding an entire athletic department.
When every athlete comes together, there's a different energy surrounding them because every athlete is driven and has goals, and to point all of that focus towards the idea that you are all of the same, but you are different. Athletes are the most influential students in the school building.
By joining together, athletes will realize how much of an impact they can and will make, not just in sports, but through sports.

In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Gary Joseph. Coach Joseph is a Living Legend in the High School Football World. In this episode he tells us a little bit more about the tradition of Katy football and the expectation of success his athletes have to continue the winning legacy.
Coach talks about the value of respecting others and respecting yourself. He describes how he builds a culture of mutual respect in his program by continuously understanding and knowing the hearts of each one of his players.
Coach goes all in on building relationships and trust with his players and contributes that intentionality to how they the raise up these young men not just to be good football players but men of character.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wills Point and Grand Saline talking about the different ways to be a leader worth following.
Mackey emphasizes that to be a leader worth following, you must be slow to anger or be long tempered. Being slow to anger doesn't mean we never get angry, being slow to anger means catching ourselves and thinking twice before we are about to blow up. We pause before to stop the storm. You have to ask, "what will my anger accomplish in this moment?" A good leader always has a purpose for what they do.
A good leader buys wisdom. Wisdom is something to be pursued. Wisdom is something to be purchased, and when you buy something, you do it with intentionality. Mackey challenges us to seek wisdom, in whatever way you believe you can, read your Bible, read a book. Continually seek out wisdom by talking with others, listening to podcasts, or reading a book.
In our latest Mackey and Colton are live talking about how to make where you are the big time.
Mackey talks about the idea that as coaches, we can easily look for the next big play, get prepared for our next move, when in reality, we need to make where we are big time. Where you are has got to be the big time for you. If you can't make where you are big time then you probably shouldn't be there and the next place you go probably won't be big time either because "big time" has little to do with the stature of the program, but has a whole lot to do with what you bring to the program.
In so many areas of our lives, it's easy to think the grass is always greener on the other side, whether that be in work, school, life, or sports. If you are not willing to put in the work today and grow where your feet are planted, then you aren't going to reach that goal tomorrow.
In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Joe Hubbard of East Central High School talking about the importance of focusing on building relationships with athletes in your program.
Coach explains how the initial goal he has as new players join the team is to invest time and love into each athlete. Another mentality that they focus on is becoming the best they can be, whether that be in the classroom, at home, or in school, they continually instill the "work hard, play hard" mentality.
Coach Hubbard challenges and raises the level for each of his players to see how they respond to a challenge with the hope of creating good habits and a powerful work ethic in life.
Coach continues to communicate the idea that as athletes, as coaches, as parents, we cannot change the hand we've been dealt in life, but we can control the way we play them.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Wimberley High School talking discipline and pride.
Mackey stresses that whatever your goals and dreams are, both in sports and in life, they require discipline. Those goals are going to require that you say "no" to some things that everybody else gets to say "yes" to. Some of you will have to sacrifice what you do on the weekends and who your friends are to reach your goals and dreams. There's going to be something in you that thinks it's not fair to have to say "no" when others say "yes", but you will realize that your hard work, your dedication, and your goals and dreams are bigger than theirs are. The cost of your goals and dreams are higher than theirs are. Success is always expensive and its currency is sacrifice.
The difference between where you are and where you want to be is your pride. There are two types of pride. There's the pride that says, "I'm gonna prove that I'm right without the evidence, the pride that can never be coached. You can tell how successful we will be by how eager each of us is to be coached. The intelligent person is the one who asks all the questions and isn't satisfied with being their best today, but wants to pursue being the best for the future.
We must continually pursuing daily excellence, the pride that says, "no matter what it is, I'm gonna own it. I'm going to take personal responsibility for everything in my life every single day. Excellence isn't about chasing perfection, excellence is trying to be the best version of yourself you can be every single day. What you do with your pride is the difference between where you are and where you want to be.
In our latest episode, we decided to share with you a favored Mackey Speaks Leadership Journal episode. Mackey (IG: @mackeyspeaks) shares three quotes with us about time management that helps shift our perspective on how we spend our time.
Download the leadership guide at http://www.mackeyspeaks.com/podcast/117
“Time is a created thing. To say 'I don't have time,' is like saying, 'I don't want to.” Lao Tzu
We have a choice. We choose how we spend our time. Even if you are required to be somewhere at a specific time for a specific time frame, you still have the ability to decide what you do with those hours. You can either spend those hours effectively or very ineffectively. If you find yourself saying, "I just don't have the time." The reality is probably that you just don't want to. You can prioritize and use things in a different way; therefore, making more time than you thought you had.
“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” Charles Darwin
When we waste time it's because we think we have enough time. We live in a world where we think time will always keep turning. We have bought the idea of the circular clock.
When we realize that we don't necessarily always have time. The day and time will come when we run out of time.
“You can have it all. Just not all at once.” Oprah
This quote shows us the importance of prioritization. We can't say yes to everything, we have to say no to things. Rarely, we explicitly say no. Most of the time when we are saying no to something, we are saying yes to something else.
In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach WT Johnston of Newton High School.

In our latest episode, Mackey is coming to us live with the Wylie Girls Soccer team. This episode is a special episode in that, it is from Week 26, Be You, in our Character Development Curriculum.
Mackey brings the passion as he talks to the team as if he was talking to his daughter, Jane, many years from now. Mackey stresses finding your self-worth and not listening to the constant voices in your head that tell you you are not enough.
Be you because who you are is enough. Coaches don't really care about what you do, but they care about who you are because your identity is not found in the goals you score or how fast you are. Your identity is found in who you are, and if nobody has told you this, you are enough.
In our latest episode, Colton and Mackey catch up after some down time after a busy season. They talk about taking time to rest, but not for long, as Mackey will soon be visiting the University of Houston to speak at a coaching clinic.
If you're in the Houston area, Mackey invites you to listen to him speak March 23rd at the University of Houston. He will be speaking about treating others right and continuously pursing the idea of being your best self while making other people your MVPs.
Mackey recently spent some time speaking with Green Mountain HS, and he spoke about amplifying your impact. When you are willing to work harder and go longer, your impact will be amplified. You've got to go the extra mile. Mackey talks about the ways in which Coach German of Green Mountain, has been going the extra mile by turning his football program into a leadership academy. He's not been building leaders only on his team, but in his school as well.
As coaches, when we look beyond ourselves, beyond our four walls and ask how we can serve our community, when we begin to open our scope and our perspective, then our impact can be amplified.
Mackey talks about the challenges that Coach German deals with on a daily basis. From smaller staff sizes, to the inability to work with junior high students, he has taken on those challenges to create his program and allow it to go the extra mile.
In our latest episode, Colton is live with Coach Todd Howey sharing his story on becoming a coach and how his program focuses more on building champions than wining championships.
Coach Howey talks about how as a program, they raise expectations and don't listen to excuses. Being a coach of a school in a lower income area, Coach Howey stresses the importance of making sure that just because some of his players grew up in poverty, that should not reflect the poverty. He makes it a point in his coaches to show no signs of poverty in the way you dress, in the way you behave, in the way the kids play, or in the ways they act. They do not let poverty reflect in their program in how they treat the kids. They are held to a higher standard to show them their potential and the show them that they deserve more.
He tells other coaches who are dealing with similar struggles to continue to push, push to make the school and the facilities better for the students.
Every week Coach Howey writes a weekly newsletter to his parents, custodial staff, office staff, and his HR director. The latest newsletter he shares with us a short story and the message that we can all learn from one another, we all have the opportunity to help kids improve both on the field and off, and if we work together, we can make a huge difference in the lives of students.

In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Vista Ridge High School.
Mackey tells a story about Einstein taking a train and losing his ticket, and uses that story to beg the question, where are you going?
Mackey highlights the idea that in whatever sport you focus on, in whatever game you play, you are not defined by a number. Your worth is not found in your batting average, in your RBI's, in your yards or the points you score. Your character is defined by the impact you make in other's lives, and by the way you treat other people.
Wherever you go, you can learn how to treat and serve others by the game you play.
Three lessons that you'll learn in the game of sports to help you in the game of life are:
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Cairn University's athletes chapel talking identity.
The minute that you find your identity in what you do instead of who you are, you fail. You will never find success in what you do because one day, what you do will stop, and you'll have to hangup your cleats in whatever areas or whatever abilities you've been dependent on.
Mackey shares the common misconception that most of us have of thinking we can control everything. We try to control things at the detriment of our own lives. How many of us try to hold onto things as life is spinning out of control? We are so bullish and so convinced that we can do it that we are blind to the help that others want to provide.
Mackey tells the story of the man who asks Jesus, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" He explains Jesus' response and leads us back to the idea that God loves us too much to not let us be our best. God will sometimes call you out. God will sometimes say "not yet" when we want something really bad. In the book of Job, Job cries out to God asking him where He was while everything was being stripped of him, and God tells him that He sees far greater than the human mind can understand. He looks ahead, and his mind isn't fixed on the present.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live at Cairn University with Coach Phil Shallenberger.
Coach Shallenberger shares a little about on intentionality and transforming a program by it. Coach talks about how he grew through his failures throughout his life, and how he hopes to create an atmosphere where failing isn't frowned upon, but invited because the more you fail, the more you are learning to grow.
Their culture is about building relationships, which they show by pouring into their players. Winning is a byproduct of building and maintaining a growing relationships between the coaches and players.
Mackey and Coach Shallenberger distinguish the difference between setting standards and having rules, and what that looks like in life and in the locker room.
Our latest episode is a little different than the others. Mackey is coming to us live from Mountain Valley answering any and all questions. From the inception of his calling as a speaker and motivator to learning more about how he creates each speech for each school, Mountain Valley Middle leaves no questions out!
Mackey peels back the curtain in his own life and what his sports career looked like, the difficulties he faced, and what it looked like coming back to the game after quitting the first time.
In our latest episode, Colton shares some struggles he's been dealing with this week as him and his family prepare moving houses. Colton explains how easy it can be to get wrapped up in our struggles and lose sight of the opportunities and blessings we've been given to even be in that struggle.
Mackey discusses some strategies he learned from a coach up in Garland, Tx about how coach would make his players show his current events happening in the world, so they knew their struggle wasn't insurmountable, that they could overcome whatever they were dealing with because day after day and week after week, other people go through similar struggles, or even tougher situations and reach their goals and dreams.
It is a privilege to go through your struggle. This struggle will help you grow to be where you want to be. A relatable quote is, "the world changes when we change our perspective." When we change how we see things, it changes the things that we see.

In our latest episode, Colton's joined by Coach Sam Harrell from Southwestern Assemblies of God University who shares his journey of having to step back from coaching for a while after being diagnosed with MS to fighting back and being able to pursue his passion of being a coach once again.
On his way to a wheelchair, Coach Harrell never thought he'd have the opportunity to coach again until after a successful stem cell treatment (3rd round) turned his world upside down. Slowly gaining feeling back in his leg and starting to be mobile, he began coaching.
Coach Harrell talks about appreciating the small details in life like getting up and being able to put on Nike shoes and outfits in the morning.
He takes us through his own experience and the mindset he had while dealing with his illness, his motivation to continue to fight, and his determination to pursue excellence in his life.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live with the Georgetown High School Women's Basketball team talking fear. Whatever your fear is, it begins to shape how you feel, what you think, and ultimately who you become.
If there is fear inside you, on the court or off, lean into that fear because where you are going, the path you are on is greater than where fear will take you.
Don't let that fear keep you from being vulnerable, from giving everything you have for the people on your left and on your right. If you are all willing to go all in, you will be taken to a level you haven't reached before.
In our latest episode, Mackey is live with the Clemens High School Women's Soccer team.
Mackey goes on to talk about the very small success rate for New Years Resolutions and expresses the reason for it being largely unsuccessful because it is easy to transform your desires, but it is hard to transform your actions. It doesn't cost you anything to change your "want-to".
Mackey applies this to the idea that we should always strive to live above the line in all aspects. There are going to be days where living above the line is hard and you will have to say yes instead of no, but if you will do that and commit to it, it will not only change what you do, but what you think.
Mackey also talks about the idea that we are not disqualified, no matter our struggle, no matter what we've been through, we are never disqualified.
Colton is joined by Coach Jeff Rayburn of Lone Star High School. Coach Rayburn talks about his past and how he got into coaching, and the continuous support he had from his coaches to become better. He goes on to talk about how he runs his program and his program's mentality of:
5 Life Skills
-Discipline
-Physical Conditioning
-Love and Respect Eachother
-Love your coaches (let your coaches coach you hard)
-Reacting to and handling emotion in a positive way
Coach Rayburn goes on to talk about the importance of relationships and a relationship culture in your program. Each and every day you are either building and growing a relationship between coaches/athletes and athlete/athlete or you're breaking it down. Believing in each other and making sure your athletes fall in love with the process is what has dramatically changed their program.
Email Address: RayburnJ@friscoisd.org
In our latest episode, Mackey is back in the locker room at Prosper High School. Mackey shares the importance of honoring one another and ways in which we can do that in life and in the game.
Mackey goes on to talk about the common habit we all have in compartmentalizing the different aspects of our life, choosing which one to truly focus on, when in reality, we should strive for greatness across the board. We must focus on the good things, not the bad.
When you pursue excellence across the board, in the relationships on your team, in your academics, in your sport, you begin to only notice that excellence, and that will propel you forward!

In our latest episode, Colton and Mackey pair up and talk about finish strong. Mackey shares a little bit about his New Years Resolution and the importance he gives to continually pushing and working towards it.
Mackey also encourages coaches to be aware and diligent to not push "cruise control" in their life as seasons end. February and March can be tough months as seasons are ending, but as a coach, you have to set the standard to keep pushing and continually being a representation of the men and women you want your athletes to be. There is no "break", there is no "timeout". You've got to continually put in the work!

In the latest Coach 360 episode, Mackey is live at Clark High School talking about discipline and the continuous effort it takes to grow as an athlete and person.
The future you is depending on the present you doing the right thing, right now. Your future you needs the present you to have discipline to do what you don't want to do today.
Are you willing to take the right action today for your future tomorrow? If you aren't then it's no one else's fault if you aren't willing to take the action because you are responsible for you .

In our latest episode, Colton catches Mackey right before he hops a plane to speak with some teams in Chicago.
They discuss the servant leader mentality and methodology and how that effects both your success and your team's success. It's important to help others up, and the idea of "it's lonely at the top" doesn't have to be lonely at the top as long as you're not stepping over other people to get there but rather get there through the helping others up first and in turn, letting them help you when you most need it.
Serving others is not due from a lack of ambition, it's having a greater alignment of what matters most.

Mistakes are going to happen, in the game of life and in sports, and you have two options after making a mistake, you can either learn from it or be crushed by it. So many people try to live in such a way that they never make a mistake, but that's just not realistic.
How can you use that mistake to your advantage and not your advantage? Make it 1,000 mph. When you go into that mistake, you cannot let that mistake be an effort mistake. It's time to fail fast and realize what you DON'T need quicker so you can get what you DO need sooner!

-Success is not simply defined by a scoreboard
-Success is built on a foundation of character
-Success is defined by your character.
-Success is defined by doing what is right in the right way because it's the right thing to do.
He also goes on the emphasize the importance of treating others as they are the most valuable person you've ever met: Treat others with respect, shake their hand, and look them in the eye. When you treat others will respect, they WILL notice, and when the most need it, they will lift you up.

Colton and Mackey share a little about what's going on in the 2W world and how the creation of 2W, the idea to leave what they had and pursue something they believed in, took a leap of faith. They encourage others to take action in their lives. Take action on the field, in the classroom, at home. You are the driver in your own life, and it's time to take hold of what you have and work towards what you want.
They go into the idea that we cannot compartmentalize our lives. We cannot put different events, different attitudes, different responsibilities in their own compartment. We have to realize that everything is connect, every moment, every interaction is connected, and the only way we can "win" at life is to win every single day in the small moments, small actions.

We don’t always say what we mean or mean what we say. We can say every day that we're fired up, that we're ready, that we're prepared, but just because we say it, doesn't mean we mean it. It could be empty talk.
When it comes to reaching our goals, our goals only hear the action, not empty talk.
If we want to reach our goals, we've got to have pregnant talk—talk that is full of something that has to get out, and that something has to be action!

Who is the most valuable person in your life? You might say your mom, your grandfather, or maybe even your girlfriend or boyfriend. Sure, there’s always an easy answer to that question, but the easy answer may not always be the most accurate. If we zoomed out of your life and looked at the person you value the most, do the most for, and focus on the most, you’d most likely be looking in the mirror.
If you want to find success in the game of life, then you must learn to treat every person you meet, from the custodian to the coach that’s recruiting you, the same. Treat every person you meet like they are the most valuable person you’ve ever met.
In this episode, Mackey dives in deep and explains what it means to focus forward. He takes a quick dive into sharing the inevitable stumbling blocks we may face in life, and shares how to move past those and continue focusing on our goal forever faithfully.
