A collection of thoughts I've had recently. I talk about accountability and being accountable to ourselves. I make reference to my feelings surrounding episode 124 so if you haven't had a chance to listen to that, make sure you check it out. Also, are you brave enough to ask your close friends for feedback on how you can improve yourself? And it's been a while but I have a rant!

It's always fun having Jennifer Caswell on the show because she brings a perspective on things that many of us don't often consider. In this episode, we talk about how we sometimes over analyze innocuous comments made towards us, and second-guess ourselves. Also, have you or the people around you been going through it more lately? And by "it" I mean experiencing a shift in life that brings on chaos, effecting our day to day lives? Well, there may be a reason for this and Jenn sheds a bit of light on it. Whether or not you subscribe to the notion of being ruled by the planets, it certainly makes you wonder where all of this is coming from.

My previous episode seemed to have resonated with a few people. One listener in particular, Jennifer, was moved to reach out. She recognized similarities we shared surrounding self-worth. How our self-worth and how other's value you can get muddied. This conversation certainly helped me and opened my eyes to things and I hope it helps you as well. Please subscribe to my podcast! This is a short one. But it's an emotional one. You all know I'm an emotional person and sometimes I need to be real about how I'm feeling. Maybe this is the turning point for the direction of this podcast. There are still a lot of things on my mind about what I should be doing and the type of topics I would like to share with you all. Since recording this episode, I have a somewhat clearer understanding of, and perhaps a bit more confidence about what I need to do. I would love to hear or read your comments and thoughts on this and past episodes so far. Please subscribe to my podcast! And follow me on Instagram @howyoufeeling.ltw.

My first solo episode. I plan on continuing with the same energy and message of what How You Feeling is all about. Honest conversations about mental health, personal growth, and social awkwardness. My hope is to have a mix of solo episodes full of reflection and observations, and casual conversations with friends about anything and everything.

In this episode, I talk about the importance of sleep and how pain and fatigue affects how we function and grow. Also, the difficulties of making a decision when faced with too many options. Does it put your mind at ease when things are decided for you?

As the end of summer slowly approaches, transition and change become a part of all of our lives. This includes How You Feeling with Coco & Fran. With the start of many new and exciting projects in our futures, our availability has become less and less. And because of that, we made the decision that not only was Slay Your Weekend with Akilah no longer going to be a part of the HYF podcast, but Fran will no longer be a regular host with Coco. The time needed to produce both podcasts was too much for us and we decided that it will be in all of our best interest to make this change. But fear not, this podcast will continue with Coco! This is not an end, but a new beginning! And certainly Fran will be making many appearances because he loves the spotlight too much. Please make sure you are following and are subscribed to this podcast to get the latest details on the next chapter. As we always say, change is good. We should all embrace change and not fear what may come. Please subscribe to our podcast! And follow us on Instagram @howyoufeeling.ltw.

How do we rate our love life? First, you have to define it. Ask yourself these questions: How do I want my love life to feel? What does it look like? What kind of experience am I looking for? And how am I showing up for that experience? Love is a very ambiguous concept but when we begin to hone in on some of the feelings, we can begin to define it.

Also, a recent NYT article caught my attention, When Sexual Liberation Is Oppressive. It explores the gap between the rhetoric of sexual liberation and women's real world experiences. Do people really want to be sexually promiscuous and open as much as the media portrays it?

We think it's safe to say that what we see on social media is not a true or real representation of the people and the world around us. Have you ever asked yourself if your online persona is real or authentic? Authenticity isn't just about how we present ourselves online but also how we are with the people around us, in person. Do you express or suppress your feelings with others? Have you set up boundaries? What does it mean to be authentic?

Are you someone who gets their fill of socializing simply by scrolling through social media posts and seeing what your friends and family are up to? Has social media ruined our ability to socialize? We are so distracted by what we see online - we've seen it all, why do anything in person? There's also this perception that we can only socialize during the holidays. Why do we wait to see the people that matter in our lives? Why can't we commit to keeping those connections alive and thriving by committing to getting together more often?

Establishing boundaries is the ultimate form of self care. How many times have we forgone our own boundaries just to please others? The perception that setting boundaries is mean or selfish needs to end. In order to achieve your goals, boundaries need to be set. A topic that we love to discuss here at How You Feeling: Disappointment. We complain about people disappointing us with their actions, or lack thereof. So why do we accept it? Why don't we have the conversations that will hopefully correct the behaviour? If it matters enough to us to be bothered by it, and complain about it, why do we hesitate to confront?

There are so many facets of the human experience that are connected with our mental health and happiness. And a huge part of that experience is sexuality and sexual health. Although there has been progress within these categories, there is still so much stigma wrapped around sexuality. The How You Feeling podcast has always been a sort of investigation into how we are feeling and what we should be doing to make a change, if necessary. In this episode, Fran talks about solitude. The struggle with balancing solitude with healthy social practices. Many people find it very difficult to be alone. Or the idea of being single for any length of time scares them. Often times, there is a reason they struggle with solitude. Sometimes we need to challenge ourselves to find happiness with one's self. Being alone doesn't make you lonely.

In a recent email, an event was brought to my attention, called "Girl, Keep Your Legs Closed" tour. If that title doesn't scream shame and judgement, I don't know what does. How can we create safe spaces for anyone to share thoughts, concerns, questions and be open about their sexuality - regardless of their decision to have sex - if we come at them with fire and brimstone? Shame has no place in female sexuality, especially Black Female sexuality.

Ah, romance novels. Often thought of as something only lonely or bored housewives would read. But for author Beverly Jenkins, it's an opportunity to weave history into her novels. Writing with the Black Love perspective in mind - a narrative not represented enough, Beverly Jenkins writes about African American history that is overlooked. Not only will you be educated, but you may need to take a cool shower.

Where do you make friends? As we get older, the opportunities to make new friends become less and less. Perhaps we just don't want or need any new people in our lives, and that's ok. But there may come a time when the people in your circle are just not fulfilling you they way you would like. That's not to say they are bad friends. They just have different interests or priorities. Did the title pique your interest? Get ready for this episode. I had an amazing time chatting about dating, sex, sexuality, and God with Minister Kimberly Braxton. Her candid and hilarious experiences bring a much needed and refreshing point of view about women and sexuality. The importance of staying sex positive while being abstinent, and removing the stigma of being a sexual woman while still honouring your relationship with God and the church. Please have a listen, you won't regret it! Minister Kimberly Braxton is the first person in her immediate family to graduate from college and her heart was set on a career in corporate America. However, on December 18, 1996, God intervened and her life was completely transformed. She discovered she had a passion for God's Word and was able to make the difficult topics of scripture easy to understand. Her ministry characteristics are a deep scholarly understanding of scripture with a twist of humour. Min. Braxton has a gift for teaching the Old Testament and is known for speaking truth to power. In 2007 she graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree from Alliance Theological seminary with a concentration in theology.   When her nose isn’t buried in a book (or listening to podcasts) you can be sure to find her on road trip adventures with friends making memories. When was the last time you actually relaxed? Why is it so difficult for people, especially women, to slow down and relax? Society certainly does not promote nothingness. If you are not doing something or taking care of others, it's viewed as laziness or selfishness. Why are we made to feel guilty for taking care of ourselves, even if it means doing absolutely nothing?

Three topics in one episode!

1) Transactional friendships. The most common form of transactional friendships occur because someone wants to use another person to get ahead, or an exchange of skills that benefits one another. These "friendships" can also be for clout, money, and/or fame. Sometimes, transactional friendships occur because people don't want to be alone, often choosing the wrong people as "friends".

2) Party etiquette. What should you do if you are invited to a party and you found out one of the guests is someone you don't get alone with or you have unresolved issues with that guest?

3) Do larger people have to work harder to be accepted in society?

Where words fail, music speaks.

When you dive into the background of any artist, often times the work they create is a response to a moment in their lives that may have been difficult to speak about. Listening to music can make you feel a range of emotions. Creating music can also help heal some of those emotions. We chat with singer/songwriter Eric Terino and his emotional journey into creating his latest LP Innovations Of Grave Perversity, and how he transformed heartbreak to healing.

Medical Gaslighting is a term used to describe doctors or medical practitioners who blame patient's illness or symptoms on psychological factors, or deny a patient's illness entirely, and telling the patient they are not sick. It is a form of emotional abuse that frequently leads to the patient doubting their own experiences. Women, especially women of colour, are more likely to experience gaslighting from the medical community, unfortunately. They are diagnosed and treated differently by doctors than men are, even when they have the same health conditions. We speak with Amanda, who shares her experience dealing with medical professionals, long overdue diagnosis, and the importance of medical advocacy. Please subscribe to our podcast! Can there be true authenticity without vulnerability?

I have been reading bell hook's book, All About Love, which delves into the aspects of love in modern society. And it had me thinking about love, vulnerability, and femininity. There is a fine line between being open (expressing emotions) and being honest that potentially exposes vulnerability. Society has a perception that softness or emotion is perceived as weakness. Why are we taught that expressing our emotions, or crying, is bad? This type of mentality is passed down from generation to generation. While emotional strength, stoicism, etc., are not the same as other generational curses such as alcoholism or drug addiction, at some point, these behaviours need to be checked, and changed. What may have served one generation well, may not help future generations. When it comes to our emotions, being vulnerable is authentic. Why would you let anyone stifle that?

A social experiment is a type of research done in fields like psychology or sociology to see how people behave in certain situations or how they respond to particular policies or programs. Many of these experiments test an individuals response to conformity. Society has made us believe the if you don't conform, you will be punished. Why do we have this fear of sticking out from the crowd? There's also the subject of con artists. They make us believe in a fantasy, whether it's the perfect relationship, an exclusive and immersive experience, or partying with the glitterati, we buy into what they're selling. We want to follow the crowd. It's the desperation to be a part of a group or to have the perfect life. So we conform.

Jezebel - an impudent, shameless, or morally unrestrained woman.

The portrayal of black women as lascivious by nature is an enduring stereotype. The descriptive words associated with this stereotype are singular in their focus: seductive, alluring, worldly, beguiling, tempting, and lewd. Historically, white women, as a category, were portrayed as models of self-respect, self-control, and modesty - even sexual purity, but black women were often portrayed as innately promiscuous, even predatory. This depiction of black women is signified by the name Jezebel. -Dr. David Pilgrim

Expanding on the topic of women and sexuality, I start to breakdown some of the stereotypes. If you would like to read more about this subject, I have linked a couple of articles:

‘Jezebel’ Is One Of Three Common Racial Slurs Against All Black Women And Girls

The Jezebel Stereotype

Sometimes the missteps and indiscretions of our past shape who we are today in a positive way. In this episode, we talk openly about tales of shoplifting and how those experiences have given us a heightened sense awareness, and ability to recognize shoplifters while working in retail. We, by no means, condone or celebrate our past behaviour. We are not the same people we used to be. We use our powers for good now.

Sex is an integral part of the human experience. And for far too long, the topic has been clouded in stigma, shame, and judgment, particularly from a religious stand-point. Sex positivity is a movement hoping to change that. Being able to have open and honest discussions about sex and sexuality and everything in between. But what happens when you bring abstinence into the conversation? Is it possible to be abstinent and sex positive? Absolutely.

I am joined by Nayshma, who shares her journey with abstinence and how she balances this with her spiritual beliefs. You can follow her on Instagram @the.tangent.queen and also learn more about her side project @the.baddie.collective which focuses on BIPOC females with ADD & ADHD.

How do we define failure? Is it literally just the opposite of success? Or could it be because something didn't meet our own or societal's expectations? A few thoughts about women and sexuality. How religious or conservative upbringing can compromise femininity and sexuality. And the double standard women often face when it comes to expressing said sexuality. In the book, "Untrue" it states that women go through a "ho phase": a right of passage; the sexual liberation of exploring your options. Why must it be labeled a phase for women?

This episode was supposed to be a production session on how we plan our episodes but we got into the topic of friends and conversations. Often times, we just want to express some of the frustrations or emotions we may be experiencing, simply to let it out. We don't necessarily need advice. Most of the time, we already know what we need to do. All we really want is a sounding board. But this can be a challenge when the friend you are speaking with wants to impart advice, unsolicited advice. What's more is that this advice is something they should be taking themselves and you are left more annoyed than before. Our friends have good intentions, for the most part. But a good rule of thumb is if you aren't specifically asked for advice, don't give it. Do you agree?

One of our favourite kind of episodes to create is when we ask each other questions - personal, existential, whatever gets us chatting! The fun part is when we learn something new about one another. How many times have you given advice to someone, or have helped them with a problem in their life, and you rarely (if ever) apply that same advice to yourself? Sure, it feels good helping others. But why is it so easy to talk the talk but never walk the walk? Usually we get caught up in other people's problems as a means of avoidance. A distraction. It's not fun looking at the mirror and seeing the personal issues you need to fix. Ask yourself two questions: What have I done for myself? What advice should I be following right now? Whatever it is, you owe it to yourself.

Astrology purports that astrological bodies have influence on people's lives beyond the basic weather patterns, depending on birth date. There is much debate on the validity of this idea. But there is no debate when it comes to Pluto's Return! This small but mighty planet has been on a 248 year long journey around the sun and it's set to return on February 22nd, 2022. That's a lot of 2's! Surely there must be something to think about there. When you hear the word Legacy, one of the first things people think of is a gift that is passed on to another person upon their death. It's usually something tangible. When you're younger, making friends is relatively easy. As a child and young adult, you are surrounded by the same group of people day in and day out. Eventually, something is going to click and you have a handful of people you call "friends". As we get older, the opportunities to make new friends become less and less. Other than work, most of us don't frequent the same places on a regular basis. Unless you sign up for a class, or you attend events with the same people, making new friends can be quite difficult. But it also presents us with a chance to be more selective with whom we allow into our inner circle. As we get older and have (hopefully) learned lessons from past relationships, we do have a list of criteria we look for. And of course, boundaries that should be respected.

It's a new year, and with it comes a new intro to our podcast! But it also brings the topic of resolutions. We all come out of the holidays with a promise of changing something in our life. Most of the time it revolves around food and weight loss. Making changes to better ourselves is always good but why do we wait for the new year to start? Why not start the moment you have those thoughts?

In this episode, we do share some of our resolutions by committing to showing up and doing the work necessary to make those resolutions a reality. Personal accountability is key. Will 2022 be the year you start saying yes to the things you've been putting off or were too scared to try? Maybe you have been spreading yourself too thin and this is the year you set more boundaries by saying no. Whatever it is, there's no better time than now to start.

Have you ever had that one friend that never seems to make time for you? You seem to be the one who initiates conversations or plans, with little to no effort from the other person. Trying to solidify plans is almost an impossibility. At what point did you say to yourself: I deserve better? We've all experienced this at some point. There are only so many times you can chase someone in the same circle before running into yourself and realizing you are worth so much more.

If there is one take-away when you listen to this special episode: please don't take your health and the health of people around you lightly. If you feel even remotely off in any way, err on the side of caution and don't be around anyone. At the very least, wear a mask! If you need to get tested because you suspect a possible exposure, please, please, please notify anyone you may have been in contact with immediately. Do NOT wait until you get your results. Simple precautionary measures could save so much time and heartache. And they can also potentially save a life. Please be safe.

When we shifted our podcast focus to mental health, we were invigorated with this new sense of purpose. We have always shared our own personal experiences with trauma, mental health, personal struggles and growth, all while weaving our unique sense humour through each episode. We want to bring back that focus again, talking about topics that are important to us and society, and how they affect what we do or don't do. In this episode, we discuss how social media has become a platform for Mental Health Theatre. Everyone seems to have the perfect quote or life mantra that we should follow. How many of those people are actually practicing what they preach? Is it important to walk the walk? It's certainly important to put the work in. And that's where many of us fall short.

Most people's perception of BDSM is 50 Shades of Grey, which tends to be more of a romanticized depiction of the lifestyle. There are also many other things wrong with the books/movie but that's a discussion for another time. For this episode we chat with Amy, a pro-Domme, who shares her experiences with BDSM - both recreational and professional.

Later, Coco interviews someone outside of the BDSM community, who attended a kink party, and gives us her perspective on all the sights and sounds.

Here's a suggestion: if it doesn't concern you, or you can't say anything nice, your comment can be kept to yourself.

How do you respond to change in your life? Do you face it head on and welcome new and exciting experiences? Or do you fight change and avoid potential growth? Fear is usually a reason people hesitate to change. We discuss ways to confront that fear and open yourself up to new possibilities.

We are bombarded with images of what society deems "the perfect body". We read stories of young people being influenced by these images and their struggle to attain the unattainable. More often than not, it's young girls and women who struggle with body dysmorphia. However, it is not exclusive to them. Boys and men struggle with the same issues and unfortunately there are few safe spaces for them to share these struggles. We chat with Vincent Paul, who shared with us some of the inner dialogue he has when it comes to his body image, and how that has affected his life and career. One of our favourite members of the LTW family, Akilah Peynado from the podcast SlaytheClutter with Akilah, is joining us as our guest co-host! She opens up about a health scare she experienced recently, and the importance of taking care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. Although talking about mental health has slowly become less taboo, it is still very much stigmatized in society and our hope is that episodes like this will help others realize how necessary it is to be open and honest with our mental health.

In this episode, we chat about relationship expectations. Make sure you're home with dinner on the table! Bill Cosby enters the room, and Bikram yoga cult leaders in speedos. Fran also chats about his experience talking at Mental Health America. We, at Later This Week, enjoy laughing and making others laugh with our unique perspectives on life. But it’s also important to us to bring awareness to certain causes and events. In recent weeks, the discoveries of several unmarked graves, the remains of hundreds of Indigenous children in Canada, were found at residential school sites. These unmarked graves are a shocking reminder of the oppression and violence perpetrated by Canada’s colonial institutions against First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples. Acknowledging and raising awareness of these atrocities inflicted on Indigenous peoples is an essential path to reconciliation. Every Child Matters. We strongly urge our listeners to learn more about the Indigenous community, as well as what residential schools were in North America. We have the ability and the technology to communicate with anyone at anytime. But even with all of this speed and accessibility, we all know people in our lives that may be a bit challenged when it comes texting and the art of conversation. Yes, texting is a quick and easy method for us to convey thoughts to one another, to keep in touch, etc, and grammar is sometimes thrown out the window. So, how important is grammar and etiquette when you text? Should it matter? (Yes it should)

A woman's decision to not have children can be the result of many different factors, all of which are valid reasons. However, more often than not, society, and specifically other women, view those childless women as deficient.
