Dr. Carl Jung began to have apocalyptic visions in October 1913 which compelled him to engage a dialogue with his unconscious. In the following months, he transcribed these experiences in his personal journals (Black Books). When World War 1 started in June 1914, Jung realized that his visions, dreams, and meditations may have been precognitions of the impending war.
On this minisode, we explore the writings and journals of Dr. Carl Jung to help us better understand this pivotal moment in Jung's life and how it inspired his later psychological theories.

Art-making: verb, a creative act that results in an art-object.
Art-object: noun, a material or immaterial byproduct of art-making.

All creative geniuses have visions throughout their lives which guide their work. What does it mean to have a vision? How does a vision differ from a goal? How do you discover your own vision? Let's talk about it.
This insight developed from recent studies and reflections I've been engaged in, it is part of my current attempt to define creative genius through several traits which all creative geniuses seem to share. In searching through all of the insights gathered over five years of doing this show, I've noticed that all of the figures we have covered have a vision which, in some way, guides their creativity.
I hope you find this minisode inspiring.
Here are the questions mentioned in the episode. I recommend getting a journal or opening up a notepad on your computer and answering them to compel a vision of your own. Feel free to be as prosaic and lengthy as you like.
- What activities / mediums am I most passionate about? What are my strengths in those activities / mediums?
- What subjects and styles do I find most engaging? What subjects and styles do I love ‘creating in’ most?
- What’s something the world needs? What’s something I’ve never seen anyone do?
Even if the process of answering these doesn’t lead to a new vision immediately, the act of dialogue with your inner world will jumpstart something which will.

On this minisode, we’re going to explore the physical and creative benefits of napping. I’ll share with you my personal method for easing into a nap practically anywhere. And we will answer this question: are there any creative benefits to napping?
Dorian's Nap Method:
- Set your alarm for 17 - 20 minutes.
- Lay down on a bed (with a sleep mask) or elsewhere, like a car (with sunglasses).
- Slow down your breathing and scan your body for any tension.
- Slowly count from 1 to 15 in your mind, imagine drawing each number slowly. If you make it to 15, start from step 3 again, and restart your count.

Today in Creative History: August 18th, 1969, Jimi Hendrix plays a visionary rendition of The Star Spangled Banner for a stunned audience at Woodstock. It's a performance that will go down in history as the musical climax of a tumultuous decade in the USA. Decades later, this rendition still sounds as startling to our ears as it must have to the tens of thousands in attendance.

This is a Guided Meditation episode about one of the most perplexing aspects of creativity: Intuition. What is it and how do we engage it more effectively?
This meditation is based on a technique I've been developing called: Intuition Mapping. Grab a cup of coffee / tea, and give this guided meditation a test drive to see what compulsions are pushing and pulling you.
Some helpful notes:
• Motivations push you. Intentions direct you. Intuitions pull you.
• To find your motivations ask: what is pushing you?
• To find your intentions ask: what are you pushing yourself toward?
• To find your intuitions ask: what is pulling you? What is gently tugging at the fabric of your being?
• Intuitions often feel like something is pulling your neural network toward a certain direction, it’s a feeling to move in a certain direction. One which you often can’t always explain with logic.

Leonor Fini was one of the most prolific and mysterious artists of the 20th century. Her career spans an impressive 67 years, she completed over 1,100 oil paintings, and her art was featured in over 350 international gallery exhibitions during her lifetime. Yet she is virtually unknown to us today. Her art and career are shrouded with the mystery of a sphinx's riddle. This is the story of Leonor Fini, one of the 20th century's great creative geniuses.

When the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, in 1933, one of their first goals was to reshape culture by force. The Nazis organized book burnings, stormed artist studios, confiscating work they disagreed with, and fired contemporary artists from teaching positions in universities. The goal was to place limits on human expression–an ominous display for what was to come.

The celebrated 1800's German poet, Heinrich Heine, wrote: "where books are burned, there too, people will burn."
On this episode, we explore the Degenerate Art Exhibition of 1937, otherwise known as Entartete Kunst. The intended goal of the exhibit was to insult and ridicule the featured artists and kill modern art. Making it clearly known to the German public that the Nazi Party was forbidding any form of abstraction in painting, film, sculpture, or music.
The suppression or censorship of art is a symptom that something is desperately wrong in the cultural fabric of a society. What happened to the artists featured in the exhibition? Did they continue making art? Did they flee or stay and protest? Why is art so dangerous?

In 1916, Dr. Carl Jung experienced a strange phenomenon that possessed him with tremendous creative force. The experience inspired him to write a philosophical & psychological scripture he called: The Seven Sermons to the Dead.
This is Jung's most mystifying work. It appears in the final chapter of The Red Book, and it embodies the culmination of Jung's numinous inner explorations from 1913 - 1916.
On this special episode, we will dive deep into Sermons One and Two, to attempt to understand this rare creative work the way that Jung understood it. Along the way we will delve into Gnostic scriptures which likely inspired Jung, explore key Jungian theories which are embodied in the Seven Sermons, and try to understand the larger significance of this esoteric literary work.

On this episode we explore the tragic death of Vincent van Gogh. We seek to answer, once and for all, was it: suicide or homicide? In the process we discover that the two popular theories explaining Vincent's death are deeply flawed, and a new theory emerges.

On May 8th, 1889, Vincent van Gogh checks in to a mental asylum. What begins as a three month stay extends into a year. A period of time during which Vincent paints 141 masterpieces in between bouts of debilitating psychotic attacks.

What is the 10,000 Hours Rule? How can you apply it in your life?
I first stumbled on this theory in the book: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The basic premise is this: to achieve mastery in any skill that requires complex cognitive processes, you need to put in roughly 10,000 hours of effort, spread across a 10 year span.
In other words, if you want to become a master at something, you will have to clock in about 10,000 hours into that domain. That could be anything from cooking, computer coding, rapping, martial arts, piano playing, oil painting, and so on.
Since that book, the theory has been a bit more fleshed out by more recent studies, that bring 'deliberate practice' into the equation. In this special Creativity Tip episode I explain and explore the implications of this compelling theory. And most importantly: how to apply it in your life.

Can madness and genius be contained in one individual? Can psychosis and the rarest artistry be contained in one mind?
These contradictions pervade the story of Vincent van Gogh. And in the final three years of his life, they culminate in a whirlwind.
You may think you know Vincent, you may have heard about him on a TV show or a podcast. But not like this.
Over the next three episodes, we will explore Van Gogh’s personal letters, doctor’s reports, police reports, and family letters, to paint a vivid picture of Vincent in his three final years, these are the years that produced his most famous and beloved works, and the years in which Vincent’s final tragic descent begins.
Was he actually psychotic or just misunderstood? Did he really cut off his ear and commit suicide? Was he actually a creative genius or is it all just hype? Let’s find out.

Oftentimes we only truly listen to our body when we are feeling pain or pleasure. This means we ignore the subtle sensations which are happening every minute of every day.
This meditation specifically focuses on your heart. The engine of your body. Your body is the vehicle you will be using for your life journey. So why not become familiar with the engine that runs your vehicle?
We begin this meditation with a breathing and relaxation exercise that brings the body to a point of profound stillness. Next, we explore the sensations which become much easier to notice in this stillness, specifically your heart, and the ripples that its beating send into specific areas in your body.

In 1944, the psychologist Carl Jung experienced a vision that transcended any others he had during his life: it was his near death experience. The Middle Pillar is a unique and profound meditation popularized by Israel Regardie. Regardie was a writer on Western esoteric traditions and a ceremonial magician during the 1900's. The meditation we explore in this episode is based entirely on Regardie's description in his book of the same name, released in 1930, entitled: The Middle Pillar. During his lifetime, Regardie was a prominent member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. One of the benefits of practicing The Middle Pillar is that it centers you and brings your energies back into balance. This is achieved through the visualization of spheres of energy along the center line of your body, called sephiroth. These spheres are activated using ancient Hebrew names, traditionally believed to represent emanations of the divine. As a memory aid, below are the five sephiroth which The Middle Pillar focuses on, and the respective divine name that is chanted, along with a pronunciation key in parenthesis. The Middle Pillar: 1. Kether • "AHIH" (pronounced "Eh-he-yeh") 2. Daath • "YHVH ALHIM" (pronounced "Yod-heh-vav-heh E-loh-heem") 3. Tiphareth • "YHVH ALOAH ve-DAATH" (pronounced "Yod-heh-vav-heh El-oah-ve-Da-ath") 4. Yesod • "SHADDAI AL CHAI" (pronounced "Shah-dai El Chai") 5. Malkuth • "ADNI HARTZ" (pronounced "Ah-doh-nai ha-Ah-retz")

In 1913, Carl Gustav Jung devised a meditation method that allowed him to reach his imaginative unconscious, experiencing waking 'visions' that led to his most enigmatic work: The Red Book.
I have tracked down his descriptions of this method through his later lectures, and have created an approximation of what Jung was doing. Included here is a guided meditation episode for your exploration of your own imaginative unconscious.

In this mini-episode we will be exploring. . . your brain! I will guide you in bringing your body to a sleeping state, while your conscious mind is still awake and in control. This will allow you to explore a very special and unique point between waking & dreaming, which psychologists call the Hypnagogic State.
We recently explored this idea in the Salvador Dali episode (Episode 7). And now you can try it out yourself!
