It’s that time of year again!
The season of snow (for some parts of the world), lights, Christmas movies, cookies, gifts, and…stress.
As Christians, we are invited into a new way to experience the season of Advent and Christmas.
What if the weeks before Christmas were marked by rhythms of reflection, peace, and preparation? What if Christmas and the twelve days that followed were marked with unhurried celebration and fellowship?
We don’t want you to add more to your hectic schedule.
But, after reading through these devotionals, resources, and a whole lot of God’s Word, you may just be compelled to adopt new rhythms and priorities during these weeks of joy.
Table of ContentsAdventWhen is it?Advent is observed for four weeks before Christmas Day. You can count the four Sundays before Christmas Day to determine the season of Advent.
What is the purpose of Advent?Happy New Year! Advent is the first season of the liturgical year. It is a season where we can look back on Jesus’ birth and look forward to His return.
Advent is a season of preparation and anticipation for the mystery of the Incarnation — the fullness of God in human flesh, Jesus.
Advent, like Lent, is also a time of repentance as we reflect on our salvation bought through the blood of Christ.
What do we do during Advent?Depending on your church background, there are many different practices, symbols, and traditions for Advent.
These practices, symbols, and traditions can help you resist the frenzy and stress usually associated with the weeks before Christmas. Instead, you can lean into the mystery of grace as you prepare for Christmastide.
Here are some Advent traditions and practices (you’ll find more in the Advent Devotionals!):
– Lighting candles on an Advent Wreath each Sunday
– Reading the story of Scripture with the Jesse Tree
– Cleaning your home and heart
– Giving generously
– Rather than decorating your house all at once, decorate your house slowly throughout the month
– Fasting to prepare your heart to celebrate Jesus’ coming
