As a follow up to her recent series, Rev. Debra will explore how we respond to change with intention and commitment. This causes circumstances to unfold in good order for the highest and best for all concerned.
Rev. Debra continues her exploration of Finding Yourself in Transition by Rev. Robert Brumet. This week, she reminds us that each season of life is to be honored, including the time in the wilderness --or as Rev. Brumet terms it, "The Void." He writes: "In order to become who we really are, we must let go of who we are not... The Void is a passageway to truly becoming alive and fully awake" [p. 89]
Using the gospel account of the "Loaves and Fishes" in Luke, Rev. Debra focuses on the multiplying power of gratitude and thanksgiving.
In Spiritual Economics, Eric Butterworth writes: "...gratitude is not for God...You are not obligated to thank God for your life, for your job, for your prosperity. As she approaches her birthday, join Rev. Debra for a lesson that focuses on aging well by adopting the process of ‘eldering’ rather than ‘aging.’ She will use the booklet published by Unity Worldwide Headquarters as her guide.
Join Rev. Debra for a continuation of her recent lessons on love. On Mother's Day, she will focus on love's healing and nurturing force in the world and in our lives. Mother's Day evokes a gamut of emotions from grief to joy; however, Divine Love is available to heal, uplift, and enfold us. More often than not, we jumble our judgements and feelings with reality when communicating with others, leading to ineffective, incomplete, and inflammatory results. Learning to separate facts from our judgements and feelings is key to enjoying more harmonious and more constructive relationships. Jonas will also be our guest musician and song leader. You will notice that the candles on the Advent Wreath include a pink one that is lighted on the Sunday of 'Joy'. This is called the 'Gaudete' candle which is the first word of an ancient Latin Christmas carol and it simply means 'Rejoice!' On this last Sunday of Advent, let's join as a spiritual community to rejoice with one another as we prepare for the birth of the Christ in us.

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22)
These words, quoted by Jesus from the Jewish scripture, teach us the requisite order of love. We are to love God with our whole being and recognize God as the very essence of love itself. We are to love ourselves by affirming our value and worth for we are God’s beloved children in whom God is most well pleased. We are to love each other by acknowledging and serving the Christ within them. Join Rev. Debra and learn the importance of rightly ordered love.

God is both immanent (indwelling and permeating all creation) and transcendent (greater than all creation). However, the poet and mystic, Hildegard of Bingen, wrote: “You are encircled by the arms of the mystery of God.” In other words, the indwelling God envelopes us and bathes us in Divine Love as we experience challenges, but calls us to know that the One Presence and One Power in the universe is greater than anything we experience.

James 1:7 affirms that in God there is “no variation or shadow due to change.” How do we reconcile the unchanging nature of God with the constancy of change in life? Indeed, the “times they are a-changin’ "as poet Bob Dylan reminds us. Perhaps the ability to experience change points to the dynamic of transformation itself. Perceptions must shift, attitudes and beliefs must realign, and unhealthy behaviors must be released. However, even during the most difficult seasons of change, we can rely on the sure and unfailing guidance of Spirit to help us navigate the challenges we face.

In the Beloved Community, love, kindness, compassion, and inclusion, replace injustice, hatred, violence, and discrimination. Jesus called this the Kingdom of Heaven. Youth and Family Ministry Co-Directors Mary and Joshua Haun share their views on how our humanity need not be seen as a problem impeding our spiritual growth. Rather, our humanity always points us back to our divinity... reminding us of the miracles ready to express in, through, and as us!
Joshua and Mary Haun began their spiritual journeys in 2013. Since that time Spirit has guided them to dig deep to heal their mind and excavate old ideas and beliefs, using their relationship as the foundation of their healing. They are devoted to God and use A Course in Miracles as their path to atonement. Ordained as ACIM Ministers in 2015, Mary and Joshua are the co-founders of Living Prayer Ministries and currently serve as the directors of the Youth and Family Ministry at Unity Center of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Unity has historically viewed the season of Advent as an inner search of mind and heart. Co-founder Charles Fillmore spoke of Unity and Advent on January 24, 1923, radio broadcast called “Christ Mind, the Second Coming of Christ.” He said, “Christ is an idea in the Divine Mind,” and highlighted the universality of the Christ, the divine essence that dwells in every human being. Fillmore said people with preconceived, human notions of the “second coming” are bound to be disillusioned. “They are simply looking in the wrong place to discover the Advent."

The Internet, social media, and being too busy seem to be a recipe for what we are now seeing as a narcissistic or “me only” culture. We have little time for anybody, including ourselves most days. For some of us, our sense of belonging feels to be slipping away.
How do we navigate this new terrain with the inclusion of peace, harmony, and community?

Living in the Kansas City area with her patient and adoring husband, Rev Carrie Kenyon currently coordinates all aspects of the employment process for ministers, spiritual leaders, and ministries at Unity Worldwide Ministries, as well as providing support on questions regarding compensation, church governance and operations. She also provides assistance to those who are interested in starting a new church or alternative ministry. As a Certified Unity Worldwide Consultant, Carrie also works with ministries during times of transition.
Prior to ministry, Carrie, with degrees in psychology and education, spent 18 years working in early childhood education where her own inner child came out to play. She founded Willow Center, a non-profit organization for grieving children and youth. Carrie is currently a Connection Practice Coach and minister of Unity Barefoot Travels.

In the Lord's Prayer, we say, "Thy will be done," but what does that really mean? Are we simply recognizing that Divine Will reigns supreme? Or are we seeking the strength to accept Divine Will, whatever that may bring? Or are we praying that we might serve as instruments of Divine Will, and, if so, how are we to achieve this? It's a Brain Thing, Julie will speak on the effects of trauma on the body & mind and how various practices can help to calm the mind. Julie works in the College of Education at the University of Iowa, mostly working with student teachers. She also teaches a class to newly admitted Elementary Education majors, where she's able to integrate trauma-informed practices into her lectures. Julie is a trained ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) presenter and a busy mom of 4 boys.

“Growing Our Spiritual Practice”
Kevin will share how increasing inner flexibility can enhance our spiritual practice. He will help us see spirituality as a value and then introduce exercises that will help us stay focused on that value. Kevin is a longtime member of UCR, serving on the Building and Grounds team as well as helping with the audio each month. He is a licensed psychologist, practicing in the Cedar Rapids area.

When in our lives have we felt lost? Lost physically? Lost spiritually? Are they the same? When we lose our way spiritually we may not have a feeling of being connected to a belief; a faith. Is that the same as being lost physically? Marcel Proust, philosopher and novelist said, “The real act of discovery lies not in finding new lands but in seeing with new eyes.” And we have many tools available for guiding our way. Rev. We welcome Sandra Leigh as our speaker this Sunday. Her topic is Find Yes . . . Be Yes! Sandra grew up in Cedar Rapids and became a member of UnityCR at the age of 17. She served as a board member, then president of the board of Unity of the Black Hills in South Dakota. Sandra holds a Masters degree in Social Work and studied Transpersonal Psychology in a postgraduate program in Santa Monica, CA. Her happy-place is holding space as a healer for many, well aware we all heal ourselves best in the presence of Love. She is currently blessed to call Cedar Rapids her home.
We welcome Unity Minister Rev. Glenda Walden to Cedar Rapids and to Unity CR. Her topic is "Say 'Yes' to Prosperity!" Rev. Glenda is a 2015 graduate of the Unity Urban Ministerial School and was ordained in May 2016. She is currently the minister at Unity Fort Wayne Spiritual Center. She also serves on the Great Lakes Regional Unity Board as Vice President and the UWM ministry team for Regional Advisory
Council. Rev. Glenda accepted her current position as part-time minister at Unity of Fort Wayne Spiritual Center.

Our lives are endlessly full of deaths and rebirths. We fail, we falter, we change – we go into the tomb, certain that life, as we know it, has ended. But at some point, the tomb is opened, and we discover it’s empty. We’re not buried in our grief anymore, not stuck in our losses, unsure of what to do. We somehow, miraculously, have gone on into the next cycle of living, growing, striving, giving…. Easter, far from being a simple celebration with bunnies and chocolate eggs; far from being a tale of rising from the dead meant to be taken literally – Easter is more purely, truthfully and simply one of those powerful events that allow us to stand outside of time. Easter is a lens, a window through which we might glimpse a powerful truth about our lives, and life itself.
We welcome back Unity Minister Rev. Sandra McKinney. Her topic is "Palms Up". Palm Sunday represents, for Jesus, as he humbly rides into Jerusalem, the height of success and acceptance in his mortal life. He is aware that these same crowds that are cheering him will be calling for his crucifixion by the end of this week, yet he embraces this moment as an opportunity for yet another spiritual lesson. He could have entered Jerusalem quietly, calling no attention to himself. But his spiritual purpose requires a greater openness, a willingness to be both in the world, but not of it. And so he carefully stages an entrance to evoke the words of the prophet Zechariah about the arrival of the Christ (humble riding on a donkey).

Melissa Harris is a lifelong seeker of wisdom and meaning and believes that finding a connection is our purpose as humans. In 2015, a trip to the Parliament of World Religions opened her eyes to the unity that is shared in all of the world faith paths. That experience led her to enroll in All Faiths Seminary International to study Comparative Religions and Mysticism. After becoming ordained as an Interfaith Minister, she continues her studies through the seminary’s Masters of Divinity program, planning to graduate in June of 2019
