Maybe it's breaking free of the doom scroll on your phone. Or controlling your lustful or fearful thoughts. Or staying away from the ice cream in the freezer. Or getting up early enough to prioritize time with God. No matter who we are, we all struggle with self control! It's the last of Paul's 9 character qualities that make up the fruit of the Spirit that God is forming in his people.

All the fruit of the Spirit are counter-cultural, but GENTLENESS might be the more counter-cultural of all. And yet the biblical call to gentleness is consistent and clear.

As we make countless decisions around how to spend our time, talents, money and our lives, we most often ask "Is it legal? Does God allow it?" 1 Corinthians 10 teaches that's the wrong question and points us to an altogether different question to ask as we make these decisions.

Paul's warning to the Corinthian church serves as a warning for us to remember the past failures of God's people in order that we guard our own lives and flee from idolatry and stay faithful to Christ.

Why does Paul refuse payment for his church ministry? Should all pastors do the same? Paul teaches us that while we are afforded many rights, we are called to use (or forfeit) everything and anything for the sake of the gospel.

The world looks one way from ground level. But it looks very different when we get up above it. In 1 Corinthians 15:20-28, the Apostle Paul takes us higher and invites us to see the earth-shaking, life-changing, future-shaping impact of Jesus' resurrection.

Just like some of the Christians in Corinth, we are those who fight for our personal rights and freedoms. Paul here in 1 Corinthians 8 teaches that for those who love God, Gospel love trumps and must shape the exercise of our rights freedoms.

Like the Corinthians, we are a MESSY CHURCH filled with messy people who are living messy lives. We, like them, need clear Biblical instruction on the messy issues around marriage and divorce. 1 Corinthians 7 provides a guide!

Why does Paul celebrate singleness? Why does he call it a gift when many see it as a curse? Paul elevates the singles in the church by pulling back our focus to see that devotion to God matters more than any relationship status.

The Christians in the Corinthian church are suing one another in civil courts! Its another area where they aren't living or applying the Gospel together.Here we see how Paul challenges them with the Gospel to live differently.

1 Corinthians 5 highlights both the seriousness of sexual immorality in our own lives and seriousness of sexual immorality in the church. This passage provides guidelines for how a church is to deal with ongoing, habitual, unconfessed, public sin.

In 1 Corinthians 5, Paul begins to confront and correct some MESSY sexual sin in the Corinthian church. As we dive into this vulnerable subject, the place to start is to explain what "sexual immorality" is and why it's so serious in the sight of God.

In one last effort to call the Corinthian church to humble unity centered on the gospel, Paul exposes how their love of worldly honor is completely at odds with the way of Jesus. He then calls them to imitate his example for the sake of their unity together.

Everywhere we look, we see a crisis in leadership: selfish leaders, harsh leaders, failing leaders. But leaders in God's kingdom and church are called to be different. What do leaders shaped by and centered on the Gospel look like? Paul models it and teaches us in 1 Corinthians 4.

Have you opened a gift only to discover it contained lots of other gifts? That's Jesus! And one more reason why Paul calls him God's INDESCRIBABLE gift.

One of the reasons Jesus is God's INDESCRIBABLE gift is because Jesus is the most surprising gift in all history. No one saw God's Savior coming the way he did. But our familiarity with the Christmas story means we often miss it's surprises.

How do you see the local church? How does God see the local church? How we see the local church is vitally important, because our view of the church will determine our commitment to the church and to one another. Paul continues his fight to unite God's people in the local by teaching us who we are and all that is ours in Christ.

In the first four chapters of First Corinthians, Paul calls the divided church of Corinth to a renewed unity around the Gospel. In 1 Corinthians 1:17-25 he tells us WHY the Gospel is a all supreme and all sufficient basis for the unity of God's people.

Paul loves the Messy Church at Corinth because God loves the Messy Church at Corinth. It's because Paul loves the church that he won't leave them in their mess, but leads them forward to become all that God has declared them to be. And it doesn't take him long to jump write into one of the core issues plaguing the church. The church is divided.

After 45 years, the faithful spy Caleb returns to claim his inheritance while Joshua allots the land to the Israelites. In Psalm 96 we see God's joyful and passionate commitment to the world and we're reminded that Gospel is not for us alone, but for people from every nation. Because God is committed to the spread of his glory and the good news of his salvation in Jesus, we must be too!

Too often, Godβs people forget his lovingkindness towards them. Godβs promises are for his peopleβand God is faithful to his promises. This message is a call to remember Godβs past faithfulness in order to rely on him today and trust him for tomorrow.

In this week's study, God fulfills His long promise to deliver the Israelites into the Promised Land. In this spectacle, He tells the people the same encouragement He tells us today which should build our faith and stir our hearts: Follow me, and I will be with you.

The short story of Rahabβs protection of the spies in Jericho has far reaching impacts across the larger narrative of the Bible. God chooses a prostitute to accomplish His purposes not only in the Promised Land but also in the redemption of the world.

We made it! Our life of Joshua series has finally brought us to the book bearing Joshua's name! As we begin the account of Joshua leading Israel into the promised land, we see God's repeated command for him to "be strong and courageous." The Preacher leads his readers on a reflective stroll through a graveyard in Ecclesiastes 9. Surprisingly, amidst the tombstones, we're called to joy and purpose. The Preacher simultaneously laments the evils of death and longs for and anticipates the joy of resurrection. We will see that Jesus delivers us from the snare of death by willingly entering and overcoming the snare himself on our behalf.

Today we continue our Summer study of the book of Ecclesiastes. Our text challenges the notion that we can find fulfillment and meaning by being βgreatβ in life. Instead, reaching greatness could be one of the most precarious, difficult, and confusing experiences of your life. However, the path towards the greatness we've always desired leads another way; true and lasting greatness can only be achieved in God.
