Social Security Explained: What Every Retiree Needs to KnowFind out how the “Beyond Break Even” approach differs from simply choosing the age to claim Social Security benefits based on break-even calculations.
After years of resisting the idea of inviting financial planners onto the show, I’m making an exception for this important conversation.

In this episode, we uncover the five essential pillars of Social Security optimization and debunk some enduring myths along the way.
Whether you’re years away from retirement or already planning your transition, you’ll learn why Social Security is much more than just a break-even calculation—and how intentional choices today can bring you peace of mind, increased wealth, and true freedom in your golden years.

FAQ's
What are the five pillars of Social Security optimization discussed in this episode?
The five pillars of Social Security optimization discussed are timing, taxation, coordination, longevity, and legacy. These pillars guide individuals in making informed decisions about when and how to claim Social Security for maximum benefit.
How does working past age 70 affect your Social Security benefits?
Working past age 70 does not increase your Social Security benefits, as benefits stop growing at that point, and you cannot accrue additional delayed retirement credits. RUSS GAISER advises that you should always file for benefits by age 70, regardless of your employment status, to avoid missing out on payments.
Why do RUSS GAISER and MIKE HOEFLICH believe Social Security is secure for the future?
RUSS GAISER and MIKE HOEFLICH believe Social Security is secure because 80% of benefits are funded directly through the FICA payroll tax and Congress has consistently acted to prevent shortfalls. They explain that even if the trust fund runs dry, most benefits would still be payable, and legislative options are available to maintain funding.

I’m speaking to you directly from my heart.
This week marks the fifth anniversary of my baby brother’s passing, and it’s been a difficult time for my family. As I reflect on my own experience with grief, I want to share what I’ve learned—about the many ways people move through loss and how important it is to be kind to yourself and to others during this journey.
I’ll talk about the well-known stages of grief and why it’s absolutely okay to grieve in your own way, on your own terms. I’ll share stories from my neighborhood and my family, from neighbors who find comfort living alone after loss to others who choose to remarry quickly. I believe there’s no right or wrong way to grieve, and we all deserve the space to do it in the manner that feels right for us.
If you’re grieving, supporting someone who is, or simply seeking to understand more about the process, I hope this episode encourages you to be gentle, to stop judging, and to start listening with empathy. May it bring you comfort, perspective, and the reminder that kindness is key.

I sit down with author Cammie McGovern, whose latest book, The Last Letters of Sally and Walter, is set to hit shelves soon (April 2026). Cammie brings her wealth of experience as a novelist and teacher to the conversation, sharing the inspiration behind her new work—a heartwarming story about love, friendship, and new beginnings in the later years of life.
Set in a vibrant retirement community, Cammie's novel centers on Sally, a 73-year-old Scrabble prodigy, and Walter, her club leader and soon-to-be companion on and off the Scrabble board. The story beautifully explores the power of connection, the importance of lifelong learning, and the joys of forming rich relationships in your golden years.
We also talk about the realities of aging, the meaningful friendships that blossom later in life, and the importance of seeing older adults authentically represented in books and on screen. So whether you're an older adult, an adult child, or simply interested in stories that celebrate life at every age, this episode is for you.

Welcome to another episode of Aging In Full Bloom. I’m Lisa Stockdale, your host, and today I’m bringing you a conversation that reimagines what travel can look like for older adults.
I’m joined by Andrew Motiwalla, founder and CEO of The Good Life Abroad—a company that takes travel beyond sightseeing tours and solo adventures in unfamiliar cities.
In this episode, I talk with Andrew about his unique, immersive programs that bring together people aged 55 and over for month-long stays in beautiful European cities.
We discuss how these experiences are designed to help you build community, learn new things, and add real joy to your life—what Andrew calls expanding your “joy span.”
We also get into the practicalities you need to consider, like health care abroad and mobility, all while focusing on intentional, meaningful travel that goes way beyond checking places off your bucket list.
Here are 3 key takeaways for those considering the next chapter of exploration:
FAQ's
What is community-driven travel for older adults, as explained in this episode?
Community-driven travel for older adults means joining a cohort to live abroad for at least a month, fostering real connections and shared experiences, rather than just touring or traveling alone. Andrew Motiwalla describes it as living independently with the support of a local community manager and new friends, amplifying joy through relationships 06:01.
How does The Good Life Abroad program support travelers during a month-long stay in Europe?
The Good Life Abroad program arranges fully-equipped apartments, organizes activities three times a week, and provides local support through a community manager who helps each traveler set personal goals and solve problems, including healthcare needs 12:07. Before arrival, participants meet virtually, and on-site, they receive guidance, community events, and 24/7 access to support in case of questions or emergencies.
How does immersive, community-based travel increase joy for people over 55?
Immersive, community-based travel increases joy for people over 55 because it combines learning, adapting, overcoming challenges, and building relationships, all of which have been shown to boost happiness in later life 07:25. As Andrew Motiwalla explains, sharing new experiences with a supportive group amplifies joy and creates longer-lasting fulfillment, or "joy span."

If you’ve felt your sense of smell is slipping as you age, know someone struggling with dementia or Parkinson’s, or just want to boost your brain health with a simple daily practice, this episode is for you.
Welcome to Aging In Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale! In this episode, I sit down with my special guest, Jonathan Askholm, to explore the fascinating and often overlooked world of olfactory training—the art and science of strengthening your sense of smell.
Together, we dive into how our nose isn’t just about pleasant aromas or powerful memories; it’s deeply connected to brain health, cognition, mood, and our overall well-being.
Jonathan Askholm shares his personal journey—from corporate wellness into a passionate advocate for olfactory training—sparked by his own family’s experience and compelling scientific studies.
Through our conversation, I discovered some surprising truths, like how the olfactory system is the only sense capable of regenerating neurons throughout life, and why smell training is now being recommended to improve memory, mood, and even help those recovering from illnesses like COVID-19.
If you’ve felt your sense of smell is slipping as you age, know someone struggling with dementia or Parkinson’s, or just want to boost your brain health with a simple daily practice, this episode is for you.
Let's learn why smell just might be our most underrated sense—and how it could become your secret weapon for healthy aging.

3 Key Takeaways:
FAQ's
What is olfactory training, and how can it benefit brain and memory health?
Olfactory training is a practice using concentrated single-scent essential oils like lemon, clove, rose, and eucalyptus, intentionally sniffed twice daily to improve or restore the sense of smell. Scientific studies show this boosts brain and memory health and can enhance cognitive function, mood, and even flavor perception.
How do you actually perform olfactory training at home?
To perform olfactory training at home, smell four different concentrated essential oils (lemon, eucalyptus, rose, clove) twice a day for 20–30 seconds each, ideally using inhaler-style kits for safe, consistent use. Consistency is key: you’ll see noticeable results in the sense of smell and possible cognitive improvements after regular daily practice for several weeks.
Why is olfactory training not more widely recommended despite strong scientific support?
Olfactory training remains under-promoted because the sense of smell is the least understood and understudied sense in neuroscience, despite mounting robust studies confirming its benefits. As Jonathan Askholm explains, there is little public health messaging about it and general skepticism about such a simple, low-cost intervention, even though evidence and experts strongly support its use.

Whether you’re excited by new technology or wary of its risks, I invite you to listen in as we talk about the real-world opportunities and challenges AI brings to our lives.
In this episode of "Aging In Full Bloom," I’m tackling the complex and sometimes intimidating world of artificial intelligence—and what it means for older adults. I’m
joined by Henry Quinlan, an author and speaker who’s spent years teaching seniors about technology, and together we break down the basics: what AI really is, how it works, and where it’s headed.
Henry Quinlan shares eye-opening examples, like using AI to write personalized messages, plan trips, or even improve recipes at home. But we also dig into the tough questions—loss of jobs, the lack of government regulation, and how AI might impact our sense of connection and companionship. There’s even talk about the possibility of using AI for emotional support, which, to be honest, raises some mixed feelings in me.
My goal is to help you see both sides, and to remind you that, even in a fast-moving digital world, staying connected and cherishing humanity is more important than ever.

28:58 "Positive Insights for Older Adults"
Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone navigating tech and aging:
FAQ's
What are the main pros and cons of AI for older adults discussed in this episode?
Henry Quinlan highlights several pros for older adults, including using AI for companionship, improved social and family connections, personalized health advice, recipe creation, and travel planning. However, he also discusses cons such as job loss, overly fast technological change, concerns about empathy and emotional dependence on AI, and the lack of government regulation.
How can seniors safely use AI to connect with family and manage daily life?
Henry Quinlan suggests seniors can use AI tools to communicate with grandchildren, personalize recipes, plan trips, and even redecorate homes. He emphasizes experimenting with AI in a careful, curious manner and being mindful of safety by choosing reputable and well-controlled AI platforms.
Why does Henry Quinlan think AI's rapid growth is both exciting and scary for seniors?
Henry Quinlan is impressed by AI's capabilities but worries its rapid advancement outpaces society's ability to manage risks, potentially causing job losses and emotional challenges, especially for seniors. He believes AI development is moving “much too fast,” with insufficient regulation and potential threats to both personal interactions and established industries.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Kathleen Sheldon, Director of Outreach and Engagement for BoldAge PACE.
BoldAge PACE is a new, comprehensive senior care program now available to Franklin County, OH residents—and it's truly changing the landscape for aging at home.
Here are three key takeaways anyone in senior services, caregiving, or healthcare should know:
🔹 All-Inclusive Care in the Community:
BoldAge PACE offers medical, social, transportation, and in-home support services, helping seniors age safely and comfortably in their own homes. No more worrying about multiple providers or transportation—PACE brings everything under one roof.
🔹 Eligibility Made Clear:
Participants must be age 55+, live in a state-approved service area (like Franklin County), meet a nursing facility level of care, and be able to live safely in the community with support. Medicaid is the primary payer, but Medicare/Medicaid dual eligibility or private pay are also options.
🔹 No Out-of-Pocket Surprises:
PACE covers all authorized healthcare costs—including hospitalizations—with no copays, deductibles, or premiums for eligible members. Enrollments happen every month, so seniors don't have to wait for open enrollment to get started.

What I’ve Learned About Aging from Our Guests and My Own Journey
In my milestone episode, I take a moment to reflect on some of the biggest lessons learned from years of conversations, stories, and experiences in aging and senior care. Whether you’re working in the aging space, an older adult yourself, or caring for someone you love, here are a few key takeaways you might find valuable:
Be Prepared, Beyond the Financials
So many guests have talked about planning ahead—not just financially, but also emotionally and socially. It’s easy to put off these conversations but essential for a smoother journey as we age.
Good People (and Programs) Are Out There
While we often hear about sad stories in senior care, there are still so many passionate people and service organizations making a big difference in the lives of older adults. Why we do what we do really matters!
Stay Connected & Share Your Stories
If there’s one thread throughout every episode, it’s the power of connection and storytelling. Staying connected not only combats loneliness but also keeps our stories—and those of our loved ones—alive.
Thanks to our amazing listeners for engaging, sharing feedback, and being part of the conversation. Here’s to continuing this journey together! If you have topics you’d like to see covered, I’d love to hear from you.

Through his own story and research, he shares how retirement can actually be the start of something new: a time for creativity, personal growth, and renewed purpose, whether that’s through volunteering, part-time work, or picking up new hobbies.

20:11 "60th Birthday Reinvention"
Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone approaching a milestone year (or who’s ever felt the "birthday blues"):
Take Ownership of Your Happiness: Don’t wait for others to make your birthday special. Plan ahead and create the experience you want—it’s your personal New Year!
Release Unrealistic Expectations: Many birthday disappointments come from expecting others to deliver joy for us. Be direct about what you want, and don’t be afraid to ask for it.
Embrace Aging as a Privilege: Each birthday is a celebration of life and a reminder of the unique journey you’re on. Rather than dreading “big numbers,” honor the wisdom and growth you’ve gained.

Welcome to Aging In Full Bloom! I’m Lisa Stockdale, and in this episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Angie Dortch—an educator, caregiver, and the creative mind behind a unique wellness program designed just for us, the active aging community. Angie shares her journey, inspired by caring for her mother and her background in the performing arts, and together we dive into the importance of not just aging, but learning how to age well.
In our conversation, Angie introduces practical, easy-to-use memory tips—like her object recall exercises—that I personally tried out (and loved!). We laugh about the everyday struggle of finding our keys, and Angie reassures us that those little lapses don’t mean we’re losing our minds. We also explore the value of staying socially connected, embracing lifelong learning, and facing the future with enthusiasm rather than dread.

The Impact of Home Ownership on Longevity: "having too much of a concentration of rental in one neighborhood maybe is not helpful for longevity and the like." - Justin Moor
I have the pleasure of sitting down with Justin Moor, the President and CEO of the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio. Justin and his organization serve ten counties in our region, with a mission to help those who are 60 and better, not just older, live healthier, fuller, and longer lives.
Together, Justin and I talk about the many services his agency offers, from case management and home repairs to meals, transportation, and vital caregiver support. We talk about how every community is unique, discuss the realities and challenges around Medicaid and long-term care, and explore the incredible value older adults continue to bring to our society.
Justin also shares some eye-opening stories about how basic resources, safe housing, and social connection can impact longevity, and why advocacy at every level can make such an important difference. Whether you’re an older adult yourself, a family caregiver, or just someone passionate about creating better communities for aging in place, you’ll find practical advice and encouragement here.

Life Hack to Look Younger: "There's a surefire way to look younger. Tell people to step back." - Diane Dean-Epps
I have the pleasure of chatting with Diane Dean-Epps — an author, humorist, and, as she puts it, the queen of multiple jobs that make her a minimum amount of money. Diane just released a new book called Bangs and Botox: My Aging Journey Into, Through and Beyond Denial, Fillers, and Human Preservatives, and together, we’re diving into the ups and downs (and laughs!) of accepting aging.
During our conversation, Diane opens up about her personal journey: how she’s learned to face her changing reflection, why she swears by bangs as an anti-aging “arsenal,” and her admittedly hilarious adventures with fillers and Botox. We also have an honest talk about the emotional side of growing older—those unsolicited public comments, the shift in how others view us, and, ultimately, the power and joy that come from embracing who we truly are, even if we’re not everyone’s cup of tea.
If you’re wrestling with the idea of aging, wondering how to own your story, or just need a hearty laugh and a dose of encouragement, this is an episode for you. So join me as we explore why laughter is such good medicine, and how accepting ourselves—wrinkles, quirks, and all—can be the most liberating part of growing older.

I enjoyed sitting down with Marc Cooper, the insightful author behind "Older to Elder." Together, we discuss the difference between simply getting older and consciously stepping into the role of an elder—a transformation that calls for intention, mindfulness, and a commitment to higher purpose.
Marc brings a refreshing perspective, moving beyond conversations about ageism and decline to focus on what’s possible when we choose to live with wisdom, curiosity, and compassion. We talk about what it means to be a “contemporary elder” and how this journey involves embracing—not avoiding—life’s endings, and, in doing so, finding freedom, peace, and relevance.
Whether you’re navigating your own path through aging or supporting someone you love, I think this conversation will inspire you. It’s all about seeing aging not just as something that happens to us, but something we can deeply engage with—so we can truly age in full bloom.
Key Moments
00:00 Overcoming Ageism: "Older to Elder"

24:22 Hearing Life's Higher Purpose
30:10 Elder Acknowledgment and Transition
31:22 Inspiration: Confidence, Compassion, Kindness
Here are my big takeaways:
Elderhood is a Choice, Not Just a Stage: Becoming an elder requires mindfulness, intentionality, and self-inquiry. It’s about embracing the responsibilities and freedoms that come with age, rather than passively accepting societal narratives about getting old.
Legacy Through Presence and Purpose: Elders aren’t just “older” people—they’re contributors and stewards. By focusing on a higher purpose, elders enrich not only their own lives but also their communities, impacting personal, business, and political conversations with newfound wisdom.
Spirituality & Self-Reflection Are Key: The journey from older to elder hinges on self-acceptance, letting go of the past, and cultivating a sense of meaning. Marc emphasizes that this is a spiritual journey as much as a practical one, embracing uncertainty and fostering peace with both life and death.

"...Everybody takes their car in to get routine maintenance, because they don't want costly repairs or their vehicle to break down. And the home is the same thing." - Sean Fitzgerald
In this part of our series on aging at home, I’m taking a closer look at something that’s vital for seniors—but often gets overlooked: home maintenance. I’m joined by Sean Fitzgerald, president of TruBlue Home Service Ally, to talk about why proper home upkeep is so important for older adults who want to stay safe and independent in their own homes.
Sean and I discuss the common challenges seniors face, from preventing falls to simple chores that become harder as we age. He explains how TruBlue’s services—like home safety assessments, grab bar installation, and maintenance packages—can help solve these problems and give both seniors and their families peace of mind.
We also talk about how even small fixes, like improving lighting or clearing clutter, can make a big difference. Whether you’re a senior yourself, caring for an older loved one, or interested in starting a purpose-driven business in this field, you’ll find valuable insights in today’s conversation.
Highlights from the Conversation:

In rich and insightful prose, "Aging Angry" draws upon the experiences of hundreds of older adults and a wealth of literary and academic sources to empower readers with new understanding of anger’s sources, dynamics, and possibilities.
Together, we explore the underlying causes of anger in older adults, from workplace ageism to family dynamics, and discuss how this anger can be understood and even channeled into positive change. Thanks for listening to Aging in Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale, sponsored by HomeCaire of Ohio. We added an "i" to care because we care about the individual. That includes the individual caregiver and the individual client. From each caregiver's caseload to every client's care plan, we understand that individual preferences and priorities matter. People matter, and we haven't lost sight of that here at HomeCaire of Ohio. If you or someone you know needs personal care at home, call 419-458-7000 to learn.
Do you want to make your home smart, but aren't sure where to begin? Are you worried about hackers taking control of your smart devices? Do you want to make a smart home that keeps your family entertained, comfortable, and safe?
My guest is the author of The Smart Home Manual, Marlon Buchanan. He has worked in the IT field for over twenty-five years as a software developer, a college instructor, and an IT Director.

"86 going on 60."
That's what and how my guest feels. James Flaherty is the author of Dear Old Friends.
The book is a reminder you don't stop playing because you got old--you got old because you stopped playing (and laughing and learning and creating and living). Besides a Happy Memoir from an author who wrote this book at age 44 and 85--DEAR OLD FRIENDS was originally a love letter to all the wonderful, much older friends the author said made his life so much more worthwhile.
Full of loving advice for aging magnificently, you'll want to read it and want all your Dear Old Friends--not just your parents--to read, smile, learn and think about how satisfying it is to make every day better.
As James reminds us, today is the oldest you've ever been--and the youngest you'll ever be--so let's make today great.

"I teach people with arthritis to move differently, so they can overcome pain and get back to doing the things they love."
My guest is Dr. David Sofer. And this is a quote from his website, www.arthritishelp.info.
In our conversation, he states that being diagnosed with arthritis is not a call to the wheelchair and chronic pain. Yes, arthritis is a chronic condition possibly giving us chronic pain. But 50% of those diagnosed with arthritis will not feel the pain or discomfort of this disease.
He teaches the principles of movement, which breaks down the fundamentals of how we move. That helps us understand how to live with arthritis.
Dr. Dave talks more about posture as well. As he states in this interview, there is no such thing as good or bad posture. Your body tends toward what is comfortable for you, to get your body to balance over your bones.
And finally, we talk about how patients are diagnosed with arthritis, and how it is wearing and irregularity in your joints.
His website is full of free tutorials and videos to help you help yourself understand and manage the pain of arthritis.
Dr. Dave developed his unique method for relieving arthritis pain by combining his decades of clinical practice as a physical therapist and his background as a champion gymnast and springboard diver. Refining this method over thousands of treatments for arthritis patients Dr. Dave inspires and empowers them to overcome their limitations and regain the ability to do the things they love.
He has shown that everyone has the ability to improve no matter their age, diagnosis, or physical ability. With the right guidance, understanding, and commitment you have the ability to feel better.

The Choose Home Care Act of 2021, introduced by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Todd Young (R-IN), aims to give more seniors the option to receive care at home for 30 days after a hospitalization, rather than going to a skilled nursing facility or other transitional settings.
The legislation would open the door to a variety of home-based services, including skilled nursing, therapy, primary care, personal care, RPM, telehealth, meals, home adaptations and non-emergent transportation.
My guest is Joe Russell, Executive Director at Ohio Council for Home Care and Hospice.
Here's how you can take action to help this Act move forward.
And here's a link to helpful tips to get your voice heard by your representatives.

Ed Brazee, Jill Spencer, and Chris Toy from Boomer Tech Adventures are back as my guests on this episode.
BoomerTECH Adventures is all about serving boomers and seniors who want to feel competent and confident in their online skills while using their personal technology devices.
Spamming is kind of a benign form of scamming. It's not necessarily evil, but it certainly does take resources and time. Be sure to keep your personal information offline because that's how the spammers find you. Plus, if you have a digital assistant like Siri or Amazon's system, Alexa or Google, they are always listening. That can actually result in ads that will kind of target you.
Be careful if you receive an email that may like it's from a known source or an unknown source. If it has a link in the email and it asks you to click on that link from inside the email, you want to avoid that. What's happening is that the hacker or scammer is directing you to go to a place that they have designated.
Similar to that is, more and more, you'll see your social media someone who you know, you're friends with, and you get a message from this friend asking you to be their friend, but you're already their friend. Don't do anything with that request.
A recent survey showed that 19% of people between 50 and 64 have explored online dating,
And a lot of people are looking for companionship. They're recent widows, widowers, or divorced and would really like to have someone in their life. But beware. These scammers are charming, they're persistent, persuasive, and they play on your emotions, especially guilt. If there's any request for money, end the conversation right there.
The Amazon brushing scam. Brushing is a scam in which third-party Amazon vendors send people products they never actually bought. While this may seem an odd scam at first, it is all to do with exploiting Amazon's search ranking system. This then pushes their items up their search rankings and encourages more genuine purchases.
When it's all said and done, trust your intuition, trust your hunch. If it doesn't feel right, don't go there, don't do it.

BoomerTECH Adventures is all about serving boomers and seniors who want to feel competent and confident in their online skills while using their personal technology devices.
Here are the five tech issues that drive Boomers crazy that we cover in this episode.
1) Keeping passwords straight and the importance of knowing how to organize passwords. And remember that there's a difference between passwords and passcodes.
2) Once you get online, one of the things that everyone, especially seniors, should be concerned with is being safe, secure of aware online.
3) Accessibility features on our devices. A lot of people don't even know that these exist.
4) Becoming more self-reliant in terms of knowing how to ask the right questions about their devices or their technology.
5) How to use tech for fun.

My guest is Patti Davis, the daughter of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan.
When Patti's father announced his Alzheimerâs diagnosis in an address to the American public in 1994, the world had not yet begun speaking about this cruel, mysterious disease.
Empowered by all she learned from caring for her fatherâabout the nature of the illness, but also about the loss of a parentâDavis founded a support group for the family members and friends of Alzheimerâs patients. Along with a medically trained co-facilitator, she met with hundreds of exhausted and devastated attendees to talk through their pain and confusion.
Her book, Floating in the Deep End: How Caregivers can See Beyond Alzheimer's, discusses her experiences to provide her unique experience of battling Alzheimerâs.

Most diet books teach you to set short-term weight loss goals. These âsolutionsâ do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you.
As a heart surgeon who used to be morbidly obese, Dr. Philip Ovadia has seen firsthand the failures of mainstream diets and medicine. He realized that what helped him lose over 100 pounds was the same solution that could have prevented most of the thousands of open heart surgeries he has performedâmetabolic health.
In Stay off My Operating Table, Dr. Ovadia shares the complete metabolic health system to prevent disease and optimize your health, a system that the diet and drug industries donât want you to know about. Unlike quick-fix, â7-day,â radical diets, Dr. Ovadiaâs approach is a sustainable, long-term solution that could work for you.
Whether youâve suffered from chronic diseases or want to prevent them decades from now, Stay off My Operating Table could help you take back control of your health.

Elder law is an area of legal practice that specializes on issues that affect the aging population. The purpose of elder law planning is to prepare the elderly person for financial freedom and autonomy through proper financial planning and long-term care options.
With me on this episode is my new friend Maggie Kimmel. an attorney with AlerStallings.
As she states...
"AlerStallings offers continued support through all seasons of life to make sure
our clientsâ estate plans are up to date and reflect their current wishes. My
grandparents came to this firm eight years ago to craft their own estate plan.
Hearing them talk about that continued support and feeling cared for made
all the difference for me. I knew this was the way I wanted to practice law."
She love meeting with clients, hearing their stories, and then helping them craft an estate plan that will work for them and their families exactly the way they want it to.

My guest is Anne Basting, PhD, who is a leader in transforming aging and elder care. I have her on this podcast to talk about her Creative Care Imagination Kit.
Based on Dr. Bastingâs twenty-five years of research, this âimagination kitâ makes it easy for families, friends, and caregivers to make meaningful connections with elders and others dealing with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges, including memory loss.
The Creative Care Imagination Kit sparks conversation and encourages active listening, allowing all ages to freely share ideas and stories without worrying about getting the details âcorrect.â
Dr. Bastingâs years of research have shown that these practices stimulate the brain and awaken the imagination, adding wonder and awe not only to the daily lives of those with dementia but to all family members, and provides them with a means of connection and communication.

My guest is author Marilyn Peterson Haus.
Her book, Half of a Whole, explores the intimate bond between a twin brother and sister, the cruel consequences that occur when one of them becomes mentally ill, and the courage required to break away when love is not enough.
Just when Marilyn thought she had escaped life as the child of born-again farmers on the Minnesota plains, her twin brotherâs manic violence catapults her back to the fissures of her childhood. Half of a Whole is the haunting chronicle of her twinâs encroaching mental illness, her motherâs blatant favoritism, and the stultifying strictures of her familyâs religious zealotry. Sentence by sentence, she battles to break free from a painful past and live life on her own terms.

We're going to talk about what seniors should do once they've been vaccinated.
Dr. Ronan M. Factora is a geriatrician in Cleveland, Ohio and is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic. As he states, "now we're starting to see solutions to how we can get back to normal. And one of those interventions, one of the solutions does include vaccination. 00:03:08.760
we should take advantage of this because we all want to get back to the type of life that we were living before the pandemic."
Do you think we will do you think we'll get back to normal?
"I know that there's going to be changes. And, you know, normal is a relative term. I guess the goal is to get closer to normal because it doesn't sound like we're going to get rid of coronavirus."
Dr. Factora goes a bit deeper to help us understand the term "bubble" in relation to who we can come in contact with.
"Everyone has their bubble and then there's different different kind of terms for the bubble for sure. You have the bubble of the people who live underneath your own household. You know, where everyone's been at. But some people have expanded that bubble to include close friends and family that they know have been, you know, really limited in terms of where they go. So if you're very well aware of the whereabouts and the goings on of friends and family who they've been in contact with, where they've gone to, then you can have confidence that they're not going to be bringing in coronavirus from some other location outside of that bubble that we're talking about."

Elizabeth Marcus is my guest. She is the author of Don't Say a Word: A Daughter's Two Cents.
The book is about Elizabeth's parents, Edna and Leo, a perpetually warring, tyrannical pair in their 80s. They begin wintering In Mexico, where they abandon their usual prudence to embrace adventure and a bevy of sketchy new friends.
Soon, Edna adopts a pair of shyster builders whom she trusts over her own architect-daughter Elizabeth, and a farcical house results. Blithely indifferent to the calamities that result, the pair refuse all help from their too-compliant only child.
Though unique in its loony details, Donât Say A Word! will resonate with beleaguered adult-children everywhere who will recognize the special misery of watching their parents become taken over by dementia.

Capital Health Care Network celebrates 40 years in business in 2021. My guest are sisters (and daughters) of the original owners, Bob and Lynn Huff. Sarah Manning, Chief of Community Design and Kara Bernsen, Chief of Network Development.

Who doesn't remember working the broom and towel in front of the TV with Body By Jake?
Now in is 60's, Jake knows how important it is to stay active and physically healthy. I talk with Jake about his beginnings on TV, and what he is doing today to help older adults stay active during COVID-19.
Jake started as a personal trainer with clients including Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford, whom he trained for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Steinfeld became Chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 and served until 2011 under Governor Jerry Brown.
As a tribute to his lifelong devotion to physical fitness and for his persistent teaching of the Fitness Life Style, he was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame, Class of 2006.
Jake was named Chairman of the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils in 2012. Through the cooperation of public and private partnerships, the NFGFC rewards "Don't Quit" fitness centers to elementary and middle schools who show innovative ways to promote fitness and nutrition in their schools and communities across the United States.
As Jake states, "We all have dreams. And, you know, a lot of folks don't don't act on their dreams because they get they get afraid. They feel they're not to be able to succeed. Well, maybe they talk about their dreams and the people they talk to about them, but they maybe might not be as positive as they would hope them to be. It's not that they don't want you to succeed, but like my parents, they don't want to see you get hurt."

This episode is to help everybody understand what area agencies on aging do all across the country and your state.
I talk with Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging's Communications Manager Steve Centofanti.
COAAA is one of twelve area agencies on aging in the state of Ohio, and one of more than 650 area agencies on aging in the United States.

COAAA arranges and coordinates non-medical in-home services that help with daily living, such as home making, personal care, transportation, home delivered meals, emergency response, minor home modification, skilled nursing.
COAAA has licensed social workers and registered nurses who are care coordinators, who are care managers. They connect individuals who need help in the home to area service providers who provide those services, such as transportation, such as providing home deliver meals and homemaking and personal care.

Caring for a parent, spouse, or relative who cannot care for themselves due to age, infirmity, or illness is one of the noblest human activities. It's also one of the most stressful, posing challenges that can be painful, confusing, frustrating, and deeply rewarding-sometimes all at once. When Caregiving Calls is an invitation to a deep conversation about caregiving and its meaning for you.
Aaron Blight has lived the caregiving experience many ways-as a family caregiver for a mother-in-law struggling with brain cancer as it stole her mental clarity and ultimately her life; as the owner of a home care company that supported thousands of families living their own versions of the same journey; and as a researcher, lecturer, and consultant traveling the world to learn from family caregivers and their professional helpers.
He shares his insights in eighteen brief, thoughtful chapters that examine the many facets of caregiving. He explores how caregiving reshapes family relationships, challenges comfortable assumptions, and stresses your ability to manage your time, energy, and emotions. He shows how the changing mental and physical state of a loved one can lead to growing vulnerability, need, and loneliness on the part of care receiver and caregiver alike. He shares stories-poignant, funny, and often inspiring-that vividly capture the unique daily realities of the caregiving life. And he offers candid, practical advice that can help family caregivers do a better job of coping with the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual challenges they face.
Aaron Blight, Ed.D., is an international speaker, author, and consultant on caregiving, aging, and healthcare. He is the founder of Caregiving Kinetics and has been recognized as a "Top 100 Healthcare Leader" by the International Forum on Advancements in Healthcare.
Once you hear a few segments from his book, you will want to read more of it immediately.

I interview Lee Gutkind, author of My Last Eight Thousand Days. This is his 17th book, and I couldn't put it down.
"This revealing, candid, and vivid portrait of one manâs view of aging written by the man who played a crucial role in establishing literary, narrative nonfiction in the marketplace and in the academy, examines male aging in a way weâve not seen before."
In My Last Eight Thousand Days, Gutkind turns his notepad and tape recorder inward, taking his skills as an immersion journalist to perform a deep dive on himself. Here, he offers a memoir of his life as a journalist, editor, husband, father, and Pittsburgh native, recounting not only his many triumphs, but also exposing his missteps and challenges.

Telemedicine, or telehealth.
You may have heard this recently, and maybe even prior to 20/20. I think some of us in health care knew what telehealth was, but it wasn't exactly a household word until, well, until this year.
So these days, you get more and more opportunity to utilize telehealth. Telehealth is a quick, easy, affordable and crazy, convenient way to connect with your local physician.
Simply put, it's a way of delivering and receiving health care remotely by means of telecommunication, and that doesn't necessarily have to mean a smartphone.
The cool thing is it can help you skip the trip to the doctor's office when you need to see a physician or you need medical attention for routine, non-emergency care. This is technology working for you when it comes to health care.
Telehealth is changing the nature of health care. So get with the program!

We have a special guest with us in the episode. Cassie Barlow is a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association in Dayton, Ohio, and on the Alzheimer's Association Miami Valley Chapter Board of Directors.
There are five million people in our country right now who are living with Alzheimer's disease. And there's 16 million people who are caring for those five million.
This disease kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Walk to End Alzheimer's is everywhere!
No matter where you are, you can walk in small, safe groups of friends and family in your community. Because we're all raising funds for one goal: A world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
We talk with Cassie about how this walk has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But how it is actually just as easy to participate, raise money, and raise awareness.
The concept just go out for a walk with your family or your group that you've been you've been hanging out with during this pandemic crisis. And before you go out and walk, you can gather online and watch the opening ceremonies.
The Walk in Dayton is set for October 3, 2020. And to find the walk in your community, go to https://act.alz.org/site/SPageServer/?pagename=walk_homepage.

We are smack in the middle of summer 2020 and there's a lot going on.
Well, there's also a lot that isn't going on or happening because of the virus.
Some of us are working from home. Some of us are out of work. Vacations have been canceled, postponed or modified.
We've got politics, politics and more politics. Breaking news, fake news. With an election looming right around the corner, social unrest, protesting, rioting, racism, COVID-19. I'll say COVID-19 again.
A challenge to health care system issues and concerns about our children returning to school. Smoldering heat in some parts of the country, which makes wearing these masks particularly challenging.
And we're being encouraged to refrain from or limiting gatherings. That means different things to different people.
But one thing I think we can all agree on, there's a lot going on. And with so much going on, I think it's real easy to lose perspective. when I say it's easy to lose perspective.
Don't worry. I am not going to tell you what to think or how to make meaning of or make sense of or assign meaning to anything or everything that's happening. Instead, I'm just going to ask you listeners to take a moment, take a deep breath and try to keep it all in perspective.
And I have a guest in the studio who is going to help us do just that.
Mrs. D did a podcast with me some weeks back where she talked about getting brave and asking for and accepting the help that you need as you age.
If you haven't heard that one, go back and take a listen to that podcast drew an overwhelmingly positive response. https://www.spreaker.com/episode/32535436.
I've had the privilege of hearing her story during an interview where she recently talked about her life story in pieces, sharing a story about leaving Mississippi in fear for her life and the lives of her children and husband because of racism.
I've given a lot of thought to some of what she shared during that interview because I believe understanding the past helps us understand the present, or at least it helps us see the bigger picture.
I think that's what keeping it in perspective is all about.
It's about understanding what is happening now or what might happen in relationship to what has happened or in relation to other people, places and experiences.
Keeping it in perspective is the exact opposite of tunnel vision, and I'm confident that Mrs. D can help us keep it in perspective.

We, at Capital Health Care Network, are deeply concerned about the plight and well-being of older adults. We are also concerned about each other. Life has been harder than any of us could have imagined just a few short months ago.
What to do? How can we combat loneliness during these trying times?
Admit you are feeling lonely! Many people are embarrassed about being lonely. And then there are those who are reluctant to acknowledge loneliness as a serious health concern. There is no shame in feeling lonely.
Know you are not alone! You may feel alone. You may physically be alone. But there are still good people in the world who care.
Talk to someone about your feelings! According to the Mental Health Foundation, talking about your feelings is not a sign of weakness, but rather a way of taking charge of your well-being and doing what you can to stay healthy.
Use technology to stay connected! Social distancing does not have to result in self-isolation. Studies show that friendships and social connections can act as buffers against stress during difficult times. Friends and family can provide engagement and support via the phone, Facetime, and Skype.
Refresh your faith! Trusting your faith can help carry you through the fear and uncertainty of COVID-19. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests religion and faith are meaningful ways to cope with trauma and distress for those of us who need this simple truth quantified.

Age may bring wisdom but it also brings a greater chance of health problems, and some health problems might require surgery to make you better.
We have a great conversation with Capital Health Care Network's Delores Moore, or as everyone likes to call her, Ms. D.
She is an administrative assistant, who will soon be celebrating her 85th birthday. She recently had a knee replacement surgery. She knew she needed it done, and with the strong encouragement of her eldest daughter, she had it done, and soon will be taking care of her other knee.
If you or someone you love is elderly and needs surgery, there is good news: Health care, in general, is doing a much better job of caring for the elderly, and that means better outcomes after surgery.
The older patient deserves the same quality of care and the same access to information needed to make health care decisions as younger patients. That means, first and foremost, not making surgery decisions based solely on one factor: chronological age.
Geriatrics is the specialty of caring for adults 65 and older. As the population is aging, the simple fact is that most surgeons who treat adults, regardless of specialty, are specializing in the care of the elderly.
Also, when preparing for surgery, the older patient may also want to consider the arrangements that will be necessary after surgery. For example, if the surgeon indicates a stay at a rehabilitation facility will be necessary, the patient can choose the facility they prefer prior to surgery, and even visit if they choose.

Our topic today is going to be focused around the importance of staying connected during COVID-19. And I'm really speaking more to people who have family members in long term care settings like nursing homes or assisted living. But I think there's value here for all of us. Even if you are not in one of those settings or you don't have a family member or a loved one in one of those settings.
Here in Ohio, as in most states, visitation has been prohibited in nursing homes. Now, our Governor just signed a new law, which is going to take effect soon, that will allow visitation, outdoor visitation for assisted living communities. But the nursing homes on that front, they're still saying no to visitation. And what we know as health care providers is that there is a cost associated with this stance. A cost to our residents.
And I understand, we all understand why it has to be done. Because we're trying to protect a very vulnerable population. But we also believe that quality of life matters and that we have to figure out some ways to combat this isolation, this feeling of loneliness, this fear, everything that our seniors are dealing with in these settings.
So long story short, staying connected is important. It matters. It goes directly to health, emotional, mental and physical and we gotta do something. We've got to do better.
So I've got some ideas that I want to share with you about what exactly we can do.
The first thing is I think it makes sense to establish a schedule to stay connected. Checking in at a scheduled time is helpful to both your loved one and the staff at these nursing homes or assisted livings. Your loved one will be reassured, knowing you are committed to a regularly scheduled contact. And the staff will appreciate the opportunity to plan ahead to offer assistance if it's needed.
So schedule a time to make a phone call or a visit or send an email or do some Facetime, Zoom, Skype, whatever it is, and then do it every single week or two times a week or however often you schedule the contact.
Also schedule a reoccurring weekly care conference if you feel that it's needed and you might be reassured by that, even if you feel everybody's doing everything right. I think the more contact that you have, the more communication that you have, the better everyone's going to feel about what's going on. Care conferences provide families and staff an opportunity to discuss needs, goals, ideas about how to best meet the needs of residents. And it gives everybody a voice in the process. So I think in addition to this contact that you're going to schedule with your loved one, it makes sense to schedule a weekly care conference with the staff members, which your loved one may or may not be involved with it, your choice. It also depends on the situation. If you're dealing with a loved one with dementia, it probably wouldn't make any sense for your loved one to be included. But there are other situations where it certainly would.
Plan to visit, even if it's just what we are now calling "window visits." Who knew "window visits" were going to be a thing that would ever make any sense to us. We've witnessed firsthand the importance of visitation despite physical barriers, even if it's just seeing your loved ones. It's kind of reminiscent of what you expect when people are visiting someone in prison. Right? But that's not what's happening. No one's in prison. And we know that it is so very important to have a presence, even if you've got barriers in place.
We've seen people celebrate birthdays through a window visit. We've seen family reunions. They bring the family reunion to the nursing home. We've got pictures of all this. And we're not special. Every nursing home in the country has the same type of thing going on. It's very important to be present. It's more important now than it has been previously because they don't get the social engagement that they're used to. People aren't coming and going. There isn't as much of an opportunity for interaction. And it makes for a very long, lonely day.
Care packages. That's another thing that makes a big difference. You might be surprised at how much a thoughtful care package will mean to your loved one. Packages can include photos, handwritten notes, snacks, activity books. We've seen a lot of crossword puzzles and that sort of thing. Books, magazines, personal items, whatever it is. Put a thoughtful care package together and take it to your loved ones. Surprise them. You probably won't be able to hand deliver it. You're going to drop it off and they're going to screen it and and sanitize it and all of that. But it'll find its way to the person that you dropped it off for. And believe me, it will make their day.
Encourage family and friends to act as pen pals. So I know firsthand how important this is. My son and I, my son is 22, getting ready to turn 23. We signed up to be pen pals to a couple of residents at one of our nursing homes in Hopedale, Ohio. My son is on his fourth or fifth correspondence. I mean, his pen pal has fallen in love with him. And I'm ashamed to say I haven't written mine back yet. He got a letter today, in fact.
And he wrote her a poem the last time because he discovered that she loved horses when she was growing up. And he's a writer and she got a big kick out of that. And so she's taking comfort in communicating with someone who was a total stranger five or six weeks ago. But now they're starting to get to know each other. She's even giving him advice. And it's good advice, mind you, about what he should do, what he what his next move should be in school and encouraging him to stay focused on his studies. And, you know, sharing some examples with him of mistakes that she made.
And you know what? He's listening. He's taking the advice of this woman that he's never even met. Snail mail is still a thing. I know you thought it wasn't, but it is. And if you don't have the time to do this yourself and list some family members or friends and encourage them to act as pen pals. My son is obviously a much better pen pal than I have turned out to be. But I promise I will work on making amends. I wrote her and she wrote me back and and that's where it stopped. Whereas, you know, he has had multiple communications.
So I know that these suggestions don't solve the problem, but they help. They will be helpful if you just pick one and act on it. You probably should do them more because we know that our residents and patients in nursing homes, especially here in Ohio, we don't know when this is going to end. And it's already been in place for well over two months. I mean, I think we're on week 10. Ten weeks. Think about that.
Ten weeks without any visitors, without getting be able to see the people that you normally see. And there really is something special about the human touch. In the meantime, we do the best we can because that's all we can do. So do what you can. And that includes using technology. That includes calling ahead. That includes getting creative and being present in the moment.
As always, thank you for listening. May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be forever at your back.

In the Private Duty Care episode, we talked about the role of private duty. We offered some tips on how to screen providers. And we talked about the fact that not everybody's regulated depending on the state that you live in. And we covered when private duty is appropriate and what kind of services are typically offered.
My guest again is Kristen Ekanem, Community Relations Manager with Capital Health Home Care Concierge.
One thing we didn't touch on that I want to circle back around to is companionship. Because I know that that is a big piece of what we do. And I don't really think people understand it.
Most of us don't think people realize to what degree isolation and loneliness can do to our seniors, or how it can really affect them. But companionship is about providing somebody that is there to be a companion, to be their friend to get them involved, to keep them active.
When you're looking at individuals who are living alone, they're isolated, and especially people who are no longer able to drive. And even if you have somebody who can take care of themselves for the most part, they aren't getting out. They're not being social, they don't have interaction.
A lot of families don't even live near mom or dad, and they worry about this.
So this is somebody to keep them active. To keep them involved. Get them out of the house, get them to the senior center. It is companionship. Yes, it sounds like you're paying for a friend. But this is concerning their overall health.
Several of our personal assistants who have come become companions have become family. And some of them have bonded with somebody for months, even years. They become family. And it's wonderful. It's good for personal assistance just like it is for whoever it is that they're taking care of.
And here's something that folks might not realize, when in some of those situations, we have to provide some grief counseling for our personal assistants when the client passes away. That connection is real, that bond is real.
Does the provider...
Do background screening?
Do drug testing?
Provider proof of licensing and bonding for their caregivers?
Hire the caregivers, or are they working through a third-party company (contracted caregivers are not regulated)?
You might want to ask how long has this person worked for you? How long has this person been doing this kind of work? And check out any reviews that are online, including reviews from your local Better Business Bureau.

What else do we know private duty care as? Private duty in-home, and home care, some people call it a home care. It's the non-medical piece of home care, that is private pay.
My guest is Kristen Ekanem, Community Relations Manager with Capital Health Home Care Concierge.
What kind of services are we talking about?
Personal Assistant
Personal Care / Hygiene
Light Housekeeping
Meal Preparation
Medication Reminders
Home Safety Assessments
Exercise Program
Personal Emergency Response Services
Now don't assume that because it's private pay that it's beyond your reach. Because it may not be it may be. Explore your options. Private duty is not regulated in Ohio, but that isn't true in all states. In some states, it is regulated. If you happen to live in a state where it is not regulated, then I do want to encourage you to take some measures to vet the provider.

Respite stay is usually temporarily. And it's when the caregiver needs a break. So whether that be a spouse or family member, the caregiver can come in just temporarily, if needed. Or 24/7 to just coming and checking in few days a week, whatever is needed for that individual.

We are going to talk about refusing to live in fear. And we're talking about this now for a particular reason. There's a virus out there right.
My guest is Kristen Ekanem, Community Relations Manager with Capital Health Home Care Concierge.
It's March 13, 2020. Friday, the 13th, to give you some reference of where we are in time, because we don't know how this whole thing is going to play out. But I think the tips that we're going to go through and the advice that we're going to give you is going to be good beyond this virus. Because we will get past this virus.
We found a great article about fear, and here's an excerpt - "It is human nature to avoid emotions that scare us who wants to walk directly into what promises to be a painful experience, except that by continually avoiding looking at the boogeyman within you become hostage to the monster."
Times likes these can seem crazy. You can become overwhelmed. So one way to overcome the fear is ask yourself, Who can I help today? All of us can help. We've had disasters before. And if you look at it after the fact, most of what you're talking about is what good came out of it, the community who came and helped each other.
Tip #1- Face your fear.
Tip #2 - Write down the things that you're grateful for. Your anxiety is a storehouse of wisdom. Write a letter to the anxiety. "I am no longer intimidated by you. What can you teach me?"
Tip #3 - Exercise. Exercise can refocus you and your mind. And we do know that when you exercise, you use up all that extra energy that you use to make you nervous.
Tip #4 - Use humor to deflect your worst fears. It may feel strange to make fun, or poke at, the very seriousness of the situation, but humor has healing powers.
Tip #5 - Appreciate your courage. It will make you stronger and less likely to let the next fear attack and stop you.
So, the message is don't let the boogeyman stop you in your tracks. You're bigger and better than that. And you're braver than that. It's in your best interest not to be captivated by the boogeyman. He can't hold us hostage.

Our topic is the importance of mentoring. Is it a concept lost on us?
Mentorship is a relationship in which an experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The mentor may be older or younger than the person being mentored. But he or she must have a certain area of expertise.
So it's this idea of sharing our knowledge, our wisdom, our talents with other people who are lacking that knowledge, wisdom or talents, but they want to learn.
You ever heard of such a thing? Do you do any of that in your own life or your professional life?

So the purpose of this podcast is really just to give you a baseline, some definitions to understand the different types of providers so that when you need them, you at least have some understanding.
And then I also want to encourage you to think about this.
We talked about the importance of pre-planning, but we never think about what if I need to go to the hospital?
Which hospital would I choose? We just go where they send us.
What if I need to go to a nursing home? Which nursing home would I choose?
You've got choices. If you don't pre-plan and think about those things, you get in that situation. You'll go where they send you.
The quality of care that you receive anywhere you go regardless of what type of care we're talking about what state you live in, how old you are. It's all contingent upon the staff.

We are going to talk about courage, how to be brave, being brave. I can't talk to you about courage without introducing you to one of my all time favorite books Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, by Brene' Brown.
It's not easy to be brave and courageous all the time. But if you struggle with it, I would highly recommend the book. The book is based on 12 years of research, and Brene' argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our clearest path to courage.

Recently, we received a heartfelt letter from a family and I thought I would share it with you, because it really tells the story of the difference that the right memory care can make.
Being in the industry, I've witnessed the hardship, even the agony, that families and patients experienced from combating dementia and Alzheimer's. One of the most difficult and important decisions that a family makes is in choosing the right memory care community.

We hope we helped you take a different look at what hospice is (and is not), and how hospice can play a role in a very difficult time in your family's life.

Older adults are negatively impacted by poor eating habits and a lack of nutritional understanding for seniors. Just because you're getting older doesn't mean you're an expert on aging. Understanding the changing nutritional needs of older adults is critical due to the overlap in several age related challenges.
So we have every reason to understand senior nutrition and to take it seriously. Here are three simple things that you can do.

As the days get shorter, many people find themselves feeling sad. You might feel blue around the winter holidays. Some people do get sad during the holidays. After all the fun and festivities have ended. That's sort of where I find myself sometimes in January.
Researchers have been studying the winter blues, as they call it, for several decades and a more severe type of depression called Seasonal Affective disorder or SAD. They've learned lots about the winter blues and SAD, but there is still much that they need to understand.
If you have a loved one who is talking to you about the fact that they're feeling depressed, now that the days have shortened, take that seriously. Don't blow them off. And encourage them to see their physician. If you need to talk to somebody because you're feeling suicidal, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Senior bullying.
Now, I'm not talking about seniors and high school bullying one another. I'm talking about folks who are 65 and older. Are 55 and older. However you define a senior, engaging in bad behavior bullying behavior. And I want to talk about why that happens. And then I want to talk about some parameters so you can use this as a yardstick.
If you have a loved one who you suspect may be being bullied in their senior community or maybe you yourself think that you're being bullied, I'm going to help you know how to identify bullying behavior.

Welcome to Aging In Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale, I'm Lisa. I'm so excited to be hosting this new podcast. Aging in full bloom will officially launch in January of 2018.
It can be heard on :
http://www.capitalhealthcarenetwork.com as a component of their senior resource tab,
and on a variety of Facebook pages, including Senior Agenda with Lisa Stockdale.
I've been hosting a weekly live online talk radio program called senior agenda for the past five years. That's a one hour program where we discuss as we say all things Senior.
This new podcast is kind of a sequel to my Senior Agenda online radio program. Our new format and our focus here will be dedicated exclusively to wellness. That includes all forms of wellness as they relate to aging.
I would not be qualified to host this podcast, were it not for the knowledge and expertise derived from interviewing hundreds of guests, the countless conversations and ongoing research of the past five years with my Senior Agenda online radio program.
Our plan is to provide helpful insights that empower you, and maybe even entertains you from time to time. I'm betting we can make you smile.
Email us anytime at aginginfullbloom@gmail.com. May the Road Rise to Meet You. May the wind be forever at your back.
