Eager to Know is a weekly podcast hosted by Chicago artist Ricky McEachern that engages creative leaning people about their journey and path forward. It is inspired by the idea that the creative aspects of our minds can shift outcomes in exciting ways. Guests include artists as well as others in life roles not traditionally considered creative.
Every hobby starts somewhere, and in my case, it started with this episode's guest.
Sarah works at New England Fabrics in Keene, New Hampshire, and she's largely responsible for my newest obsession: sewing. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a hobby that has challenged me, surprised me, and given me a whole new appreciation for creativity and craftsmanship.
In our conversation, Sarah shares how she first got into sewing, what has kept her passionate about it, and why sewing remains such a unique and interesting skill.
Whether you've been sewing for decades, have never threaded a needle, or are simply curious about what draws people to creative pursuits, I think you'll enjoy getting to know Sarah and hearing her story.

This episode’s guest is someone who, as a little boy, loved playing with dolls—and we’re all better off because he did.
Jon, along with his partner Myles, owns Village Square Booksellers in Bellows Falls, Vermont. It's a wonderful independent bookstore with an incredible toy department and—as you'll soon discover—a truly spectacular doll collection. Together, they also run an eBay business called The Doll Bunny, specializing in vintage dolls and doll accessories.
But this conversation is about much more than dolls. It's about creativity, authenticity, and the courage to embrace what brings you joy, even when it doesn't fit other people's expectations.
I learned a lot from Jon, and I think you will too. It's a thoughtful, heartfelt conversation that stayed with me long after we finished recording.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Eager To Know.

We speak with Jeff about his experience in the world of clowns and clowning. This interview is not what we expected.
Jeff is a multidisciplinary clown threading numerous areas of focus into a tapestry of zany, wonder-filled, and spontaneous foolery. He currently lives in southern Vermont, where he is beginning to teach clown with an Animist approach that subverts the narrative of clowning as self-discovery and inspires towards service to culture and bringing poetic beauty to the world. You can find him tending to yearly clown rituals, galavanting through nursing homes in red nose, or bending his hands towards craft and carpentry.

Another compilation episode, this one with abstract painters. I have spoken to many types of painters over the years but the abstract painters hold a special sense of mystery for me. They approach painting in a manner that is very different from how I approach it. I have always been extremely curious about their process. What is especially amazing about many abstract painters is often they are very linear and analytical in their regular lives.

Karen McFarlane Holman is all of these, plus she has a couple of Ted Talks too. We got to speak about one of my favorite topics - science, and the intersection of science with creativity.

Oscar Joya is a Chicago based artist. Born in Lilongwe Malawi, he was exposed to drawing a very, very early age. An eventual move to the United States stimulated and fueled his artistic activity. He went to an arts magnet high school, and studied art in college, focusing on the human form. For certain, he has learned to rules of painting and drawing.
Oscar’s story and his work are wonderful examples of learning the tools and using these to move things forward. His paintings are anchored in the foundations of portraiture, but he has extended this in a style that is unique and reflects his past, his experiences, and his values.
He has learned the rules and then made it his own.

Driving to my studio every day, I pass a restaurant with a visible rooftop farm right in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. Every time I drive by it I think, “a rooftop farm, what an amazing thing!” When I finally visited Uncommon Ground, I realized there was even more.
Not only is it a successful restaurant with a rooftop farm, but it’s also a live music venue, an art space, and an organic brewery. There are just a lot of interesting things there.
My conversation with Helen Cameron, its founder, quickly revealed the character traits guiding the creation of these unique business elements; visualization, eagerness to try new things, willingness to take calculated risks. All of these traits have enabled them to grow ideas, into amazing things.

It was suggested I check out Tony Rossi as a potential guest I found out he was both an actor and a coach, a mindset coach. I was very intrigued and curious to speak with him.
I found Tony to be very honest. His honesty enabled me to understand how the job of an actor is much different than I expected. Being a struggling actor activates the thoughts and feelings many people struggle with; self-doubt, not feeling enough, comparison to others. I found our conversation fun, refreshing and very inspiring.
Summerdale is a horror novel taking place in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, where I just so happen to live. Once reading it, I was eager to speak with its author David Jay Collins.
I was excited to discuss the power of words that formulate a story, characters, and themes. But in speaking with David, I also learned about the power of another set of words; the ones we tell ourselves. And, how what we tell ourselves can hold us back, or move us forward.
David's story as an artist and author is about creativity, hard work, and sacrifice but I also think it’s about the impact of the story we all create in our mind about ourselves.
