I’m Amber Harper, former burned-out teacher turned Teacher Burnout Coach, dedicated to helping other burned-out teachers to grow through their burnout and take their next best steps toward what they want from their career in education and in life. After an embarrassing emotional breakdown in front of my teacher besties - I knew something needed to change - and that something was ME. I decided that I wasn’t going to settle for burnout as my sentence as a teacher, mom, wife, or friend - and I knew it was going to take WAY more than practicing “conventional self-care” to make the progress I wanted to make. No amount of manicures, bottles of wine, or bubble baths was going to save this girl... Fast forward to a few years later and I’ve used everything I’ve learned about teacher burnout and personal development to write a book, build a course, and lead a community of BURNED-IN Teachers who refuse to settle for a life of burnout as their reality.
I’ve used my burnout as an opportunity to become an active participant in my life- in the classroom and here on the mic - using all that I’ve learned to teach kids and serve teachers… and you can do the same!

As we get closer to the New Year, there is a lot of discussion about resolutions and goal setting as we look ahead at what we want to accomplish in the upcoming year. This episode is more than just New Year’s resolution tips, information about New Year's resolutions, and how to keep them. Instead, of focusing on lofty goals, I’ll share with you the power that one thoughtfully and carefully chosen word can have on reaching your goals in the upcoming year. In this episode, I’ll explain why I believe so strongly in having a Word-of-the-Year and how to choose your Word-of-the-Year. I’ll also explain how having a Word-of-the-Year instead of a resolution can keep you focused on your goals so that you can create the personal and professional life you want and deserve.

You’re new to teaching, but you already feel like you’ve been on the job for years. You’re exhausted, stressed out, and feeling overwhelmed by everything you have to do. You’re not alone. Many first-year teachers experience burnout during their first year of teaching. In this episode, I interview Burned-In Teacher member and student Jadah, a first-year teacher who didn’t want to become part of the statistic of first-year teachers who quit and used what she learned from the Burned-In Process to combat her first-year teacher burnout. Before Jadah even stepped into her classroom, she recognized that she was already being affected by burnout through the narratives she was being told and what she thought she had to accept as a new teacher. Jadah explains how she was able to find the first-year teacher support that she needed to no longer feel burned out from teaching and learned how to create sustainability in a career that she loved.

In this episode, I'm going to share with you my interview with a Burned-In Teacher University student, and member Melissa. My heart broke as she shared her story - she had so many challenges coming at her from multiple places in her life, but she kept trying and she continued to show up for herself and her students as she tried to find the right fit for her. I know that many of you are going to relate to her burnout story. I really appreciated how real and raw she was about the challenges she has faced both professionally and personally, and how she decided to change her perspective and really think deeply about what she can do to change her own reality.

In this episode, I share my interview with a Burned-In Teacher student and member, Maggie. After transitioning back into an elementary classroom, in addition to having two small children at home, her exhaustion was only amplified by her trying to keep up with all the “new” teachers. She shares that from the get-go of her career she formed bad habits, but by rectifying all those habits and belief systems by applying what she learned in Burned-In Teacher University and through the support of the membership community, she began to honor and accept who she is and how what makes her an individual makes her an asset. In our conversation, Maggie shares how it’s not sunshine and roses all the time, and that it takes discipline and intentional action to see lasting results. So, without further ado, I want to introduce you to Maggie and I know you're going to love to hear her story!

I share several “quick fixes” that I use when I need a re-set and a protocol that I practice to determine my highest priority tasks when I feel my to-do list is getting too much. Tune into this episode and learn what you can do take control of your to-do list and determine your next best steps so you can grow through your burnout and live a happier, more fulfilled life.

In this episode, I open up about some of the struggles that I’ve been facing both professionally and personally and share with you what I’ve learned through reflecting on them. When you’re being a human teaching other humans, it can be very hard to draw a line between personal and professional struggles, and that’s okay! But we cannot continue to silo ourselves and struggle alone in silence. It’s when we get honest with ourselves and get real about what’s been challenging us that we can finally open ourselves up to find the solutions that we’ve been needing.

In this episode, I share with you the “Be-Do-Have” mentality and how this shift in mindset can totally transform your life so you can start living the life that you want. “I will be happy when…” is a common statement that leads a person to think that they won’t be happy until they finally have that “thing”, but this backward thinking is what keeps people get stuck in a never-ending cycle of frustration - and eventually burnout - because they aren’t seeing the results that they want. In this episode, I’ll talk you through how just wanting something isn’t enough - it all starts with BEING and DOING the things that we need to do in order to HAVE the things that we want most.

This episode is all about reflection and then action. Dear teacher, your journey out of burnout starts with deciding that you refuse to sit inside of your challenges and that you are capable and worthy of finding solutions, so you can move on to a happier and more fulfilled life. However, in order to act, you first have to get clear on what's truly challenging you and why. That's what today's episode is all about: Reflecting on your challenges.

In this episode, I share with you Part 2 of how I support my students in moving through disrespectful, defiant, and disruptive behaviors by sharing with you procedures and expectations that I started the year with as well as new ones that have evolved by necessity this school year. I choose not to settle for having the same old conversations about how disrespectful "today's kids" are. Instead, I have used this as an opportunity to learn new ways of helping my students to stop and think, self-regulate, and support themselves and each other throughout our days together in Kindergarten. In this episode, I share with you how I support my students in moving through disrespectful, defiant, and disruptive behaviors by sharing with you procedures and expectations that I started the year with as well as new ones that have evolved by necessity this school year.
I choose not to settle for having the same old conversations about how disrespectful "today's kids" are. Instead, I have used this as an opportunity to learn new ways of helping my students to stop and think, self-regulate, and support themselves and each other throughout our days together in Kindergarten.
Although I'm sharing my routines and procedures from my Kindergarten classroom, my hope is that you will find at least one thing to take away, adapt, and try in your own classroom to help you to have better days with your students.

In this episode, I share my own, personal struggle with the Winter Blues AKA Seasonal Affective Disorder. I can always tell when it's settling in and I also know what has helped me in the past two years to do more than feel like I'm just surviving the winter. This is important because I feel your personal and professional life shouldn’t feel “on hold” or held hostage by the winter months and I choose not to settle for tears or being sedentary and isolated for 3 months of my life.
In this episode, I’ll give you a few tips that will help you to:

Take time to learn strategies that work for you as an individual that supports your whole being - physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Understand that life is fluid. There will be times of great flow and success and other times that full of opportunities to learn and grow. In this episode, I share my top reason for being so grateful to be back in the classroom after taking three years to work on Burned-In Teacher full time. I have missed the classroom and most of what comes along with it for some time and I'm laying it all out for you today! I have to admit, I do share a little more than my gratitude for being back in the classroom this year, however. I also share how important it is to make sure that the Burned-In Community is for you. There comes a time in our careers and lives where we have to make a decision to either just listen and watch or to listen, watch, and ACT. I recorded this episode LIVE inside of my Burned-In Teacher Podcast Facebook Community and engage with teachers who are ready for REAL change in their teaching and daily lives. This episode will help you to make your decision between doing things you've always done or doing things you've never done before to go from burned-out teacher to BURNED-IN Teacher.
There have been a lot of transitions happening in our lives. Transition back into the classroom after teaching virtually for most of the year, transitioning out of the classroom either for the summer or for a new career opportunity... and for me... preparing for a transition back into the classroom after being out for three years.
In this episode, I share my interview with Angela Watson from Truth for Teachers and she and I discuss what it could look like this summer to regroup and reimagine before reentering our classrooms in the fall. This episode speaks to me deeply as I lean into my deep desire for rest and a chance to take a break before starting this new chapter of my professional career: transitioning into the role of full-time Kindergarten teacher and continuing Burned-In Teacher - both things I continue to be so excited and passionate about.
Join Angela and I in the 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Club at bit.ly/40htwbit! I'd love to see you in the community so we can support each other to maximize our time at work in the fall.
In this episode, Sarah shares her teaching journey and her decision to transition out of the classroom. In this interview, Sarah proves that the decision to leave the classroom doesn't always have to be because of a negative experience or toxic culture. I also share with you my decision to transition back into the classroom and I share with you some reasons why I feel this is the best decision for me.
In this episode, I have a conversation with Daphne Williams of The Teacher Career Coach about what it looks and feels like to consider leaving a classroom or school setting to do something different. In light of the tremendous amount of stress teachers have been under, more and more educators are deciding to take their skills somewhere else. Daphne offers 3 things to consider before or while exploring other professions outside of education.
In the final episode of her takeover for the Stand With Educators series, Alexis discusses how the "First Steps to Systemic Change" and reframing the "Principal Paradigm" can contribute to creating cultures of wellness in our schools. In the first episode of the Stand With Educators series, Alexis discusses the first steps to creating systemic change for the teaching profession. I want to be very clear about my beliefs surrounding your burnout experience - your burnout isn't your fault, but it is your responsibility to choose your next steps. My main message here is that in these moments of frustration, overwhelm, and burnout - I believe that you are worthy of making different choices about what you do, what you don't do, and why. In this episode, I share how through a post in The Burned-In Teacher Podcast Facebook Community, I learned that I created a boundary. I learned that when we state what we believe, we may have people who don't agree with us and that's ok. Not everyone is our person and we can't make everyone happy. That's a boundary that I am happy to build for myself.

In this last part of our three-part Burned-In Teacher Clarity Series, I ask a simple question that can yield BIG results in your life... Who do you need to be right NOW? As you seek and gain clarity going into 2021, you must know that everything you do or don't do now will have ripple effects on what you do or don’t have in the future. So... who do you need to be NOW to have what you want in 2021?
In part 2 of my clarity mini-series, I guide you through the next step in gaining clarity which is looking inward at the stories - lies- you tell yourself. These negative, internal stories that we tell ourselves keep us stuck in frustration, shame, and overwhelm. But, when you name your negative self-talk, you gain the clarity and confidence you need to create powerful rebuttals to combat that nasty self-talk which will, in turn, lead you out of burnout so you can become BURNED-IN!
In today's episode, I ask one important question and give you one important step into creating clarity in your life. Are you coachable? I tell you the qualities of someone who is coachable and give you one step you can take to create clarity as you move into 2021. You can't grow through your burnout without first knowing what you want, so let's start 2021 with clarity shall we?
In this episode, I interview Meredith Newlin AKA The Transformed Teacher as she tells her story of burnout and how The Transformed Teacher came to be and how she has used BURNED-IN Teacher University to transform herself through her own hardships since October. Her story will prove to you that just because things are hard now, it doesn’t mean that things will always be this difficult and that you truly can be FREED TO TEACH.
In this episode, I simply want you to know that you're seen and heard. I get honest about the fact that it's really hard to know what to say when things are as hard as they are. I want to help, give advice, and support all teachers, everywhere but it's hard to know what to say when so much is happening on a weekly, daily, and hourly basis right now. So, I will simply say, I see you. I hear you. You matter.
In this episode I talk with Andrew Marotta, a principal from New York and fellow podcaster from the Education Podcast Network about burnout, empathy, and how he supports his teachers when they’re struggling. Andrew Marotta is an energetic and enthusiastic leader who has put his positive imprint on his beloved Port Jervis HS, in Port Jervis, NY. With the release of his first book, “The Principal: Surviving and Thriving”, Andrew is expanding his impact on the education leadership community.
I’m going to break something to you that may shock you - AIN’T NOBODY GOT IT ALL TOGETHER - not me, not the teacher down the hall, not the influencer that you’re envying on Instagram or YouTube. NO ONE. In this episode, I’m going to share with you the truth behind the image of those who appear to have it all together and give you the strategies you need to bust through those feelings of superhero syndrome that are keeping you stuck in burnout.
In this episode, I interview Gabriele Carrilo, host of the EdTech Bites Podcast and passionate Technology Integration Specialist from San Antonio Texas. Gabriele shares his perspective on how teachers can take some stress and frustration away with tips and mindset shifts he uses himself as well as with teachers that he works with. He shares two tools that he LOVEs for increasing student engagement and his take on how teachers can stop drowning themselves while teaching remotely or in a hybrid model.
In this episode, I share a talk I gave that got so much BUZZ at the American Association of Employment in Education Conference. I spoke to a Zoom Room full of building and district leaders as well as heads of HR and beyond and they all seemed to agree with me that “self-care will only take you so far”. I wanted to extend to them that we all simply desire to be encouraged and empowered to take control over the three things that we truly do have control over as human beings.
In this episode, I talk with Mr. Matthew Woods about the challenges teachers are facing during the Covid-19 crisis. He shares - through his administrative perspective - how the struggle with finding balance causes many teachers to “throw in the towel”. Matthew also dives into how he worked to shift his mindset from “workaholic” to focus on what really matters.
In this episode, I share with you the “Be-Do-Have” mentality and how this shift in mindset can totally transform your life so you can start living the life that you want most. I will talk you through how just wanting something isn’t enough - it all starts with BEING and DOING the things that we need to do in order to HAVE the things that we want most.
In this episode, I talk with Naomi Gliva about her journey from being burned out and exhausted to thriving and empowered. She shares how unrealistic cultural norms about time expectations in her school led her to have feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, and eventually burnout. She and I talk about how it’s okay to challenge those unspoken expectations to truly take care of yourself so you can be the best version of yourself and beat the burnout!
In this episode, I challenge your thinking about the goals that you set for yourself by getting you to think about not only DOING the things you need to do to reach your goals but to get you to think about how you can enjoy life in general. It’s important to look ahead into the future and create the vision you want for your life. You’ve got to think about not only what you want to ACCOMPLISH - but what you want to EXPERIENCE in your life.
In this episode, Dr. Fecich shares her experience with burnout as a Special Education teacher and how she went from working with middle schoolers to preservice teachers in higher education. We discuss the importance of sharing your voice, getting connected, seeking positive influences, and being conscious of the teacher brand you build for yourself with your online presence. This is a Burned and Over-It episode for teachers who need to think about their teacher brand, especially online, and may need a safe, less public place to share their voice, if they don’t feel that they’re being heard in their immediate environment.
In this episode, Erin and Dave Tashian share their experiences with teacher burnout in their 25 + years of experience in education. They share their daily efforts to be more mindful in their own lives and how they’re working hard to help other educators to be more mindful as well. They believe in focusing on educators first, so that mindful teachers can then help their students to also be more mindful of their daily work.
In this week’s podcast episode, I share with you the keys to the kingdom. I will ignite the spark that you already have inside you to get out of that negative mindset and to overcome burnout. All it takes is changing the way you think about your current reality by not letting your lizard brain take over. By just reframing your thoughts, you can significantly change your relationships, your feelings, and your LIFE.
In this episode, I talk with Tisha Strasser about how to be your true, authentic self. Trisha shares about her organization called Bring It-Push It-Own It and how she works to support and empower teenage girls through a variety of personal growth activities. We talk about how important it is to never settle for being anything less than your unique self. We have a candid conversation about what empowerment is and isn’t and what it should look like. In this episode, you will be left feeling empowered to be your best, true self so you can do and be your best for the people you serve.
In this episode, I chat with Sam DiFillipo as he reflects on his journey in education. He shares how he used organizational strategies and mindset shifts to move from a burned-out teacher to being BURNED-IN! You will hear about how Sam was able to identify symptoms of burnout which he was able to then use to create the change he needed. Sam also drops some heavy truths about the power of understanding your teacher brand and how you can use the power of feedback to continue to grow as both an educator and a human.
In this episode, I talk with Jen Molitor, author of The Happy Teacher Handbook, about her journey in education. Jen goes deep into her first years of teaching and how her feelings of burnout ultimately lead her to take a break from teaching, with the intention of never going back. But it was her leaning into her power of choice that empowered Jen to make the decisions that were best for her. Jen talks about the power of choice and how ultimately, it’s your CHOICE to remain burned out or to become burned-in!
In this episode, I talk with Dawn Pensack about how she uses tapping techniques to manage feelings of stress and overwhelm, which were having a serious effect on her health. In this episode, I encourage you to focus forward paying attention to the stories and maybe even lies you're telling yourself as you move into this school year. Whether you're teaching virtually, with a hybrid model, or physically. I give you a simple strategy to look at what you "have" to do and how you can change the narrative you're having about those things.
In this episode, my friend and Alexis Shepherd and I address something that, quite frankly, should have been discussed a long time ago: racism and how white teachers can use their teacher voices to do better. Over the recent weeks, I’ve realized my own ignorance and am dedicated to having the hard conversations that need to happen when things are at their hardest. Alexis and I have a candid, open conversation where she shares her story along with advice and resources to support us all in doing better.
This has been a school year for the history books - literally. Life as we know it was flipped on its head and you may be telling yourself, “TGIS (thank goodness it’s summer) If I can make it through this, I can make it through anything.” Maybe the only question you want to ask yourself is, sangria or margarita? However, August and September will be here before you know it - bringing with that fact a whole slew of unanswered questions. In this episode, I lay out the 5 W’s you should definitely be asking yourself as your crazy school year winds down and your summer begins.
In this episode, Paula shares her journey from an overwhelmed perfectionist to becoming a Burned-In Teacher and what she did to change her beliefs about how to manage her time in and out of the classroom in order to save time to take action toward her personal and professional goals and passions. She shares how she got rid of that nasty “drowning” feeling that typically sets in after the first few weeks of school and shares how her preparation and dedication to her own journey actually prepared her for teaching virtually.
In this episode, I’m going to answer a question I get asked a lot: “Amber - what the heck is a BURNED-IN Teacher anyway?” When your brand is questioned, it’s good because it means that you’ve made an impact in some way. You also become more self-aware, solidifying what you will and will not settle for in this life. When you decide to never settle for going back to burnout - well - that means you are well on your way to becoming a BURNED-IN Teacher. Let’s go!
Feeling stuck or drug down by those around you? Even while teaching virtually, we can find ourselves surrounded by people who want to keep us where we are, in a perpetual state of burnout. In this episode, I get down and dirty about the “Crab Mentality” and explain how others around you could be keeping you from your true potential. I teach you how to evaluate your “Top 5” and provide you with strategies to bring people in your life who can, and will, build you up instead of tear you down.
Time to kick settling to the curb! We’re going to reflect on all of the actions you’ve taken over the past eight months, talk about the opportunity that you have to become a BURNED-IN Teacher, and you’re going to leave this episode with a smile on your face and a plan in your brain! Let’s do this!
In this episode, I get real about the four biggest benefits to being burned-out- especially when being in quarantine.
