Elusive Otter is an adorable card that features a fan-favorite creature type but unlike past otters, this one packs a punch that can change a game in a big way. Having a one-drop threat that can grow so easily and become unblockable opens up tempo archetypes that are not top tier in the Standard meta as of this writing.Having a green adventure attached to it also opens up some possibilities with combat tricks and protection spells like Tyvar's Stand. Simply put, this card might open up a new Standard archetype that feels familiar to fans of prowess. All the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/hamhocks42Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comOverthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. In this edition of The Overthinking MTG Podcast, HamHocks42 breaks down his impression of Lich-Knight's Conquest after playing with it in the Wilds of Eldraine Streamer Event (formerly known as Early Access). WOE has some amazing designs, and Lich-Knight's Conquest is absolutely one of them. It being able to reanimate multiple amazing creatures like Atraxa, Grand Unifier, Toxrill, the Corrosive, Etali, Primal Conquerer, or the new Gruff Triplets, this card has an opportunity to pop off in the right hands. If a players is going all-in on the strategy, they need assets that can fill the graveyard and leave material on the field to satisfy Lich-Knight's Conquest's multi-bargain requirement such as Collector's Vault, The Modern Age, and Teachings of the Kirin. In Standard, this won't be hard to pull off.All the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/hamhocks42Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comOverthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Arden Angel is a card that appeared on the Sega Dreamcast in 2001 but never saw a paper version until now. The chaotic nature of the card made it impossible to print in the past, but with the addition of dice rolling (specifically d4s) it's now possible. Doctor Who is coming to Magic: the Gathering and in today's episode of Overthinking MTG, HamHocks42 takes a look at one of the face cards of the set, The Tenth Doctor. Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate is a new legendary spirit naga from Commander Legends that synergizes beautifully with colorless counter creatures like Walking Ballista, Hangarback Walker, and Stonecoil Serpent. It could also be an absolutely amazing modular commander alongside cards like Arcbound Ravager, Arcbound Overseer, and even Arcbound Worker. The other detail that our host, HamHocks42, goes into about on this episode is the return of manifest. It is an awkward keyword that was introduced in Fate Reforged to mixed success. The card Reality Shift is the only instance most players know manifest from these days. Commander Masters will be bringing a complete EDH preconstructed deck featuring slivers. While slivers have been a mainstay in Magic: the Gathering for years, they can be an incredible value snowball that can absolutely dominate any game they are present in. They also have a ton of five-color legendary options such as Sliver Hivelord, Sliver Queen, or The First Sliver. The card combos beautifully with any cards that require you to pay life such as Night's Whisper or Fell Stinger, but the engine really clicks into fourth gear when Underrealm Lich joins the party. There has been a lot of hullabaloo around the upcoming Standard Banned and Restricted Announcement scheduled for May 29th, 2023. With the knowledge that there won't be a Standard rotation coming up this Fall, Standard players everywhere (especially MTG Arena grinders) anxiously await the news of what will be banned.
Additionally, there was an alleged leak of the ban announcement that claimed to have been pulled off the Wizards of the Coast website that had been written up to look like the official ban announcement. Wizards of the Coast addressed the "leak" and stated it was a fake and not to be trusted. Fake or no, the list has caused a lot of stir in the Magic: the Gathering community, so HamHocks42 took this chance to weigh in on which cards you might expect to see get the hammer come Monday.

March of the Machine: Aftermath brings a lot of interesting interaction pieces with planeswalkers and today's card - Deification - provides protection to a planeswalker of a single type. Magic: the Gathering's new card type has been out for almost a week now, so let's take a look at the examples of great battles in each color. There were a lot to choose from and a ton of great options from among the 36, but I whittled it down to one per color, plus one multicolor. Please note, this list represents my favorites and not the objectively best for your specific deck.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comAll the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Power creep is resulting in a ton of older cards being rendered obsolete and I fear the subject of today's video is taking the Alpha classic Clone and truly putting it to bed once and for all. To be fair, Clone hasn't been relevant outside of casual EDH for a long time with variants being printing in many recent sets, but this one is going to go down in history as the best one yet. See Double is instant speed, it can copy spells, and it has an entwine mode that can give you both effects at once. Blowout potential is very high with this card, like many other cards in March of the Machine.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comAll the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Just because a card is a common doesn't mean it's bad. In today's episode, we look at many commons from March of the Machine (MTGMOM) that could be good enough to see play in Standard and Commander in addition to being potential standouts in limited. In addition to brand new designs, we also see modifications to existing designs and some flat-out reprints given different names meaning you can now have redundancy in your Commander decks. Frankly, a lot of the lower rarity cards from March of the Machine look to be pretty darn good.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comAll the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. The grand cenobite mother of machines is back in March of the Machine. And frankly, of course she is. She's the primary antagonist and the reason this whole war is happening, so naturally she'd see a new iteration here. In the story, she's also brutally murdered, so presumably this will be the last time we see the character; although you can never tell these days.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/hamhocks42MagicJank: https://www.magicjank.comAll the Socials: https://linktr.ee/hamhocks42Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for a while. Kogla and Yidaro - Magic: the Gathering's stand-ins for King Kong and Godzilla from Ikoria - have joined forces in March of the Machine to beat down phyrexians with the power of their sheer awesomeness. A new battle on an old plane is underway. The plane in question is Segovia, a plane where (apparently) everything is super duper tiny except the phyrexians (apparently). Invasion of Zendikar is the first card with the new type Battle that Wizards of the Coast have previewed for us, and there are certainly thoughts to be had. A lot of people are spending a lot of time bickering over whether or not Chromatic Lantern is playable in Commander. I think the debate is wild since some people are making broad generalizations instead of appreciating that Commander is a highly variable format that is different things to different people. Frankly, I think the debate is silly since no card is universally "playable" or "unplayable" in Commander. Debating Commander playability in general seems to be a waste of time except for it's ability to generate clicks....On an unrelated note: thank you for checking out this episode of The Overthinking MTG Podcast!! Gandalf the Grey is a pretty great character within Lord of the Rings and this is an interesting interpretation of his abilities on a Magic: the Gathering card. In fact, limiting Gandalf's abilities to a single card would be very difficult given how enigmatic his powers are throughout the lore. So, Wizards of the Coast decided to give Gandalf the Grey the Blue/Red color identity and I think it works.

Cranial Plating and Neurok Stealthsuit are both part of a cycle from Fifth Dawn that has a lot of utility in Commander that I don't think is getting realized. These cards can equip/attach at instant speed for benefits your opponents won't see coming even though they should. Sparring Collar and Horned Helm have the benefit of manipulating combat in your favor while Healer's Headdress gives a stark example of why White has, until recently, been the butt of so many jokes on Twitter.

So, I can be a bit of a bonehead sometimes and put my foot in my mouth in spectacular fashion. I did just that on this very channel in my recent Griselbrand episode (https://youtu.be/RuYtRHTdt-I), in which I described the benefits of pitching Atraxa, Grand Unifier to Force of Will. I described one of the benefits being that you get to reanimate Atraxa after the fact... A thing you literally can't do under any circumstance. Whoopsie. So today, I'm here to set the record straight and get that sorted out.
Oh, and I also misread Jin-Gitaxias, so we cover that too.

This is going to see major play in Commander (aka EDH) in any reanimator strategy as well as strategies leveraging the escape mechanic or other graveyard-centric strategies. Additionally, I do believe this card is strong enough to see play in Standard and possibly even Explorer/Historic at least as a sideboard card.

Griselbrand from Avacyn Restored is a reanimator staple in eternal formats and largely considered to be one of the strongest creatures in any format where he's legal. But have you ever stopped to wonder why? In this episode, HamHocks42 discusses what makes this card so powerful and why Arena players might have reason to be concerned if they're trying to ladder up in Historic or plan on drafting Shadows Over Innistrad Remastered once it drops.

Thalia and the Gitrog Monster are teaming up and, frankly, it's awesome. So why am I upset? Well, this card includes a keyword combination that should be special, but it just isn't anymore because of the recent influx of cards that include it as well. This card is awesome, but what should be a major detail is nothing special.

Gilt-Leaf Winnower is a respectable card in Commander elf strategies leveraging the color black. The flavorful mechanics on the card itself are also very thought-provoking given the background of the Gilt-Leaf elves of Lorwyn. Eye blights are classified as creatures that don't align with the elven image of perfection and this card defines them in Magic: the Gathering card terms as non-elf creatures whose power and toughness are not equal.

Atraxa, Grand Unifier is a new card in Phyrexia: All Will Be One and, in the few weeks we've had her in the game, we've seen her popularity across multiple platforms skyrocket because she's problematically powerful. If you're going to run a strategy like reanimation or sneak attack that can cheat a large creature onto the battlefield, why would you choose anything else? Atraxa has a long and storied history as a character in Commander as well with Atraxa, Praetor's Voice being a groan-inducing commander to reveal at the start of any game. It's oddly fitting that her latest iteration be an equally frustrating card.

Sarulf, Realm Eater is an interesting card in design as well as flavor. He was also recently shown having been compleated by Phyrexia in artwork from March of the Machine. So, in today's installment of Overthinking MTG, we look back at Sarulf, Realm Eater and discuss how this character might work moving forward as an agent of Phyrexia. Also, in proper Overthinking fashion, we discuss the mechanics of the original card in great, rambling length.

Phyrexia has compleated Omnath! We all knew a five-color Omnath was coming before long, but to have it happen because Phyrexia has corrupted it is definitely a bummer. This card is an amazing value commander and also an interesting build-around for formats like Standard and Explorer. Omnath, Locus of All is going to be a pretty cool card that can hit the battlefield as early as turn 4 without any ramp.

March of the Machine brings with it a new Chandra planeswalker card. While the game is riddled with Chandras, I think this one will rise above the rest as an incredibly powerful top-end threat that has both combo potential as well as the potential for just massive value. If you're in a spell-slinger deck, you should consider adding this card.
That said, as a six-drop walker, I understand plenty of decks simply can't afford to run her, but the ones that can are going to benefit immeasurably. Izzet spell-slinger fans, your time has come because this card, Chandra, Hope's Beacon, is both powerful and playable.

Tyvar, Jubilant Brawler is part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One planeswalker strike team that survives Phyrexia's influence throughout this set. His card is also amazing in a number of ways that elevate mana dorks and other small utility creatures to amazing heights. In Standard, our jubilant brawler friend has a ton of tools to leverage and we're going to go over five of them in this video. There are five mono-colored Dominuses in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Today, we rank them by power and discuss their applications within the game. Some are certainly more efficient than others, with some looking like they'll see little play where others look to become Commander staples as well as potential players in 60-card competitive formats like Standard, Explorer, Pioneer, and Modern.

Boros planeswalkers have a bad reputation of being boring aggro/equipment filler that don't really give your gameplan a significant boost when they hit the battlefield. I've heard people writing off Nahiri, the Unforgiving as just another Boros planeswalker, and I could not disagree more with that assessment. Compleated Nahiri can take advantage of a filled graveyard by not only reanimating creatures, but also equipment with Living Weapon or For Mirrodin! As a result, this Nahiri can work as a top-end recursive threat in a cheap aggro strategy while also functioning as a combo enabler in midrange decks.

In this edition of The Overthinking MTG Podcast, HamHocks42 takes a look at an individual card that gives a massive benefit to everyone at the table. This card, Veteran Explorer, is truly awful in almost any 1v1 setting, but in a Commander pod where the goal is to enjoy a high-flying game, it can be an interesting way to jumpstart the action. It's truly a terrible card, but possibly the best terrible card.

The cycle of cavaliers, introduced in M20, are all 5-drop creatures in their respective colors that carry an interesting ETB, keyword ability, and death trigger. They exemplify their colors in various ways and also have 3 colored pips in their casting cost. While that makes them difficult to cast outside of mono-colored decks, it does mean they carry a hefty benefit if you care about your devotion. This ninja is everything you want in a great ninja. It's a payoff for attacking, but it's also a small evasive creature that can set up other ninjas. And once it's set up the other ninjas, it pays you back for returning it to hand! This card slaps.

Jin Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant is a very interesting Magic: the Gathering card. I believe it will see a fair amount of play in janky brews and midrange decks that want to out-value the opponent. Where I don't think we can expect to see it shine is in hard control where, I think, some people want to see it excel.

Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for at least 10 minutes. Often, though, he ends up yammering about whatever's on the top of his mind that the card reminds him of and a half hours passes and it turns out all he's done is share his thoughts on recent news related to Commander, Magic: the Gathering Arena, Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or humorous anecdotes from his kitchen table jank days.
