J.B. Shreve
Between 1850 and 1900, the United States changed at breathtaking speed. Railroads crossed the continent, factories transformed cities, and new industries demanded an enormous workforce. Millions of people, recently freed Americans and immigrants arriving from across Europe and Asia, became essential to that transformation. Yet the opportunities drawing them forward were shadowed by poverty, exhausting labor, discrimination, and fierce competition over who could truly claim a place in the nation.
In “The Huddled Masses,” this episode of The Empire: A 250 Year American Story explores the human movement behind America’s rise as an industrial power. Follow Irish families escaping famine, German newcomers building communities across the Midwest, Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution, and workers from southern and eastern Europe searching for a future that seemed impossible at home. Their journeys carried languages, traditions, faiths, ambitions, and hopes into rapidly expanding American cities.
But what happened when the ideal of welcome collided with economic anxiety and political ambition? Why did a country shaped by immigration so often fear its newest arrivals?
