The book of Jeremiah is up and down, highs and lows. Our text is one of the uplifting ones. Jeremiah had labored for years to uplift his nation with little success. In our text, God sends Jeremiah to a busy intersection to send a message to all who would hear. In verse 21, God says to take heed to yourselves. The word used means to take care of yourself at the cost of your soul. If we neglect the advice he gives, we do so at our soul's peril. The advice is simple: Today is the sabbath; let your burdens go.The Sabbath is a day to lay aside our burdens, fears, troubles, and concerns. It is a day to allow men to reset and reassess. Be careful what you carry out today. If you carry anything out, make it the peace of God.The concept of the Sabbath is an Old Testament one, butman's need has not changed. We still need a place of relief. There is a place where we come out of breath and weary, and God will comfort us. We cannot worship when carrying all the burdens we have. It is time to lay burdens down and leave them at the altar.
