Many struggle with the mysteries and unknowns in life. The gloomy places that life can take us, and the shadows that sometimes come across our path, often trouble us. The darkness and the inability to see a clear way in front of us cause anxiety and worry. The Psalmist in our text today describes just such a fear and worry. Most scholars believe that Psalms 42 and 43 were written about King Hezekiah. In our text, we see a man struggling with the forces that opposed him with his relationship with God. He worries that God has cast him aside. He is overwhelmed by the darkness he faced and is desperately reaching out to God for comfort. It is in that atmosphere, Hezekiah realized that he needed something that would alter his outlook. He needed an outside force that would shift the situation in the right direction. He needed something powerful enough to change the whole tone of his life. If we are going to make headway in the darkness we travel through, we need to find a force that will change our perspective and attitudes. Hezekiah realized that the only way to get what he needed was light to illuminate his path. He asks God to send out His light. Light is the only thing that can drive out the darkness in life and the uncertainty and fear that it brings. The text begins with Hezekiah questioning where God was, but he began to question his doubts after receiving God’s light. Light eliminates the breeding ground of fear. Doubt can only grow when there is darkness and uncertainty. When we receive the light of His presence and His Word, we can see our path. Our life’s change factor is not more money, a bigger house, or a better job. The change factor in life is the light of God.
