The past several months bring up many questions. One of these is the question of what makes us feel secure. We have all felt uneasy as we saw empty store shelves and shortages of things that are needed for daily life. There is insecurity when the things on which we have become dependant are threatened. Some lost their jobs or had their income reduced. Many had to isolate themselves from friends and family to stop the spread of the virus. These support systems are integral to our feeling confident and secure. Our nature is to build these protections to sustain us against the threats that come in life. Israel exhibited the same tendencies. As time went on, they began to make battlements to protect themselves from their enemies. They came to rely on these man-made structures and systems rather than relying on God. Over time, they relied so much on these things that it inhibited their relationship with God. God has a way of stripping these things away so that we are reminded that He is capable of providing for our needs and security. When we look beyond man’s abilities, we see that God is still on the throne. All that is going in the world right now may be an attempt by God to strip away the props we have come to rely upon. God wants to remove all of the props that we rely upon so that we return to relying upon Him.
