From the first century church until now, generations of people have predicted the return of Jesus. Many have observed the events of their day and saw the end-time predictions from Revalation played out in the day’s headlines. Some have even predicted the end by analyzing the “facts.” The bible is plain that no man knows the day or time and urges believers to stay vigilant and “live read.” After all these false warnings, it is easy not to become alarmed when we see end-time prophecies played out and carry on in our day-to-day lives. Like alarms in our daily lives, warnings sounded in the bible can become an annoyance that we ignore. This attitude plays well into the enemy’s hands. He wants us to be distracted. He wants us not to heed the warnings and let our guard down. The truth is that alarms are not an annoyance but to let us know when we must fix a problem. When we ignore alarms, we open ourselves up to dangerous situations. The fire alarm that goes off and is a “false alarm” might one day go off to alert us to a real life-safety danger. There are no false alarms with God. Our text today admonishes us to stay awake and pay attention to the warnings and alerts in our homes. We must not silence the alarms we have in life to protect us.
