On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl discusses why you need to employ scientific management to uncover hidden supply chain expense savings – beyond price and standardization: "Supply chain expense optimization is the action of making the best and most effective use of supply cost expense management strategies, tactics, and techniques, or wringing the towel dry on your expenses. The only problem with this definition is, how do you know that you are employing the optimum supply cost expense management strategies, tactics, and techniques at your hospital, system, or IDN?..." On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl why Nothing is more terrible than activity without insight: "A Strategic Purchased Service Plan has many similarities to a strategic planning process in that it is a systematic and defined planning process. Thus, this enables a healthcare organization to appraise the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities or gaps in its Purchased Service Management Program. On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl argues why no stone should be left unturned with your value analysis program in meeting your goal of generating a bottom line for your system and no commodity group should be excluded from your value analysis agenda: "One of the missteps we observe with supply value analysis programs is that healthcare organizations aren’t leveraging value across the entire healthcare organization, thereby leaving millions of dollars of purchases annually not value-justified. It’s almost like there is a sign posted on thousands of dollars of non-clinical products and services that reads “off limits.” It shouldn’t be that way!..." Tune in for the full article!

On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl discusses why wrong data isn't the end of the conversation: "There is no doubt about it, statistics, benchmarks, and analytics can be off base or even completely wrong, but from our experience they can easily be revised with new information, a few minutes of dialog, and some fortitude. For instance, one time we benchmarked a hospital’s bath kits’ utilization as being too high only to find out that this hospital didn’t have any private bathrooms. All of this hospital’s bathrooms were in their hallways, so bed baths were more frequent than other hospitals. Naturally, we had to revise our benchmark to reflect this new fact. But this didn’t mean we couldn’t use this new benchmark in our bath kit value analysis study. That’s the point of this article..."

Automation can eliminate these arduous functions and give valuable time back to employees so they can focus on where they shine - delivering on high quality strategic activities rather than monotonous and insistent work. The healthcare supply chain has a lot to learn from other industries and Reuben brings his years of experience to show how we can use automation to make our teams more efficient and effective! So whether you still like driving a stick shift like Justin or an automatic, tune in and don't let this episode pass you by!

Who really has the power in implant cost negotiations in your hospital? How do you get the strategic insights you need to gain better pricing and cost controls across your health system when every dollar counts? Richard Palarea, CEO of Kermit, joins us for this Power Supply Vendor Spotlight™ to talk about how their team created a software that prevents supplier overcharging through business and clinical rules applied to every implant supplier bill. The last couple of years have brought significant challenges in procurement of routine medical supplies with ongoing backorders, allocations and product substitutions - how can the healthcare supply chain work to build resiliency and security with strategic initiatives? After years of the healthcare industry transitioning to single-use products, many healthcare supply chains are now evaluating and moving back to reusable products as a long term solution. For instance, reusable gowns can be a reliable option to replace disposable items with more robust and better quality products that users feel more comfortable wearing. Patti Hoch discusses the benefits of these reusable products with Hays Waldrop, Garry Skinner and Justin Poulin on this episode of Power Supply, highlighting a way to build supply chain security that also provides some significant cost savings AND reduces excess waste from healthcare operations. With a Win, Win, Win, you don't want to miss this episode!

Most manufacturers are not making every component of their products and rely on their own suppliers. The number of suppliers can be many and the bill of material can be up to 70-80% outsourced. This is why having an internal framework for managing those relationships and aligning that framework to protect market position and enhance the customer experience is crucial. Hays Waldrop, Garry Skinner and Justin Poulin welcome Abe Salloum on this episode of Power Supply to offer insights from his extensive healthcare manufacturing experience and why end-to-end transparency is a necessity to push #healthcaresupplychain towards greater success in a time of backorders!

"Healthcare is focused on patient experience and outcomes. We have HCAHPS scores and quality metrics, but these are all at the end of the service line. However, farther upstream, even before a device is delivered to the hospital, there are decisions that are being made that impact those patient experiences and outcomes. How do we take into account all the variables from a higher level and integrated view? Ryan Bass joins Hays Waldrop, Garry Skinner and Justin Poulin to tell us exactly how and offers his insight on keeping patients informed with positive and negative messaging drip campaigns. On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl delves into the critically important topic of KPIs in healthcare Supply Chain: "I’m sure you have heard the phrase “what is measured happens.” This phrase is the genesis or reason for creating and then measuring your individual KPIs. Without KPIs, you will never know if your supply chain department is being steered on the correct course or is off course and heading for a disaster. Lastly, “there are no right and wrong KPIs; they just need to measure the important aspects of your (supply chain) business,” according to Rich Weissman..."

On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl argues for looking beyond a price-only view of your Supply Chain responsibilities: "If you are just attacking the price at the pump, then you are missing huge savings opportunities in your products, configurations, deliveries, and disposal cost.

While price is important, it pales in comparison to your total cost of acquisition to disposition of everything you are buying. That’s why price is only 38% of the value equation and the balance of your product, service, and technology cost is 62%. What cost drivers will obtain the best return-on-your-investment if you put them under your value analysis microscope? I’m sure you now know the answer to this question..."

On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl makes the case for looking at the big picture and big wins available to your hospital Supply Chain team: "Don’t get bogged down researching special requests, or as I like to call it “trivia”, when there are dozens of high value savings targets that you should be working on. Running down these oddities might be fun to do, but it will limit the time available to you for more important work.

It’s easy for us to get trapped in the “small ball” game, or things that we feel comfortable with, bring us gratification, and show some results. We must avoid this temptation at all costs if we are to play in the supply chain big leagues where no one wins the World Series by playing “small ball”. We must always have our eye on the big picture!..."

On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl describes the importance of diagnosing your healthcare Supply Chain challenges before trying to implement a solution: "The simple truth is that we, as an industry, are treating symptoms of a problem more often than the actual cause of the behavior with so-so results. On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl explains how the circle of confluence strategy can positively impact your hospital's Supply Chain: "Regular communication is fundamental. It gives clinicians the opportunity to share and digest diverse ideas. It can also generate new ideas by putting old ones into context. Publish newsletters to keep clinicians fully informed about your philosophies and actions and aware of your sensitivity to their needs. Ask for the opportunity to present new programs and initiatives at medical staff meetings and luncheons. Most of all, truly listen when clinicians tell you about their concerns and problems.
