Congregation Beth Messiah
Beth Messiah was founded in 1982 by Richard Freeman and his wife Patsy with the vision of creating a space for Jewish people to find the Messiah Yeshua and remain true to their Jewish heritage. Since its inception, Beth Messiah has grown from a chavurah meeting in a living room to a messianic synagogue with more than 400 people in attendance each week and an online viewership in the thousands. If words are important, the words of Scripture are supremely important because they are the reliable, authoritative words of the living G-d. But the sword of G-d’s Word does not do us any good unless we learn how to use it offensively by internalizing it and applying it to our lives.
Psalm 130 speaks of Adonai’s gift of mercy and forgiveness. When we realize what our salvation cost Messiah we begin to comprehend the unending Grace of our King and the frailty of our lives!
Adonai has a redemptive purpose for every tribe and tongue and nation. This message illustrates how individuals and people groups can have a significant influence on society when they use their gifts to serve Adonai's purposes and when they work together to accomplish His will in the earth.
In our Torah portion this week, Adonai sends various tests to the children of Israel and they fail the tests horribly. We also encounter various tests in our walk with Adonai. James 1:2-4 tells us to consider it all joy when we encounter various trials, knowing the testing of our faith produces endurance. In this message we discuss some of the ways that Adonai tests our faith and how we can keep from flunking the trust test.
Pharaoh’s hardened heart against Adonai demonstrates how the human heart is deceptive and unreceptive to the word of G-d. Believers can cultivate a heart of good soil by putting on the character of David, a man after God’s own heart, who demonstrated humility, worship, love for God’s word and presence, fearlessness, and loyalty.
In the same way Adonai humbled Israel in the wilderness as they obeyed in faith, believers in Messiah must work out their salvation knowing Adonai is working in them. But remember The Nehemiah Factor: while you build, be prepared to fight because the war goes on!
People will either be slaves to sin or slaves to Messiah. Ignorance of G-d’s Word leaves people stuck in their sin and destined to perish. It is the living Word of G-d that secures freedom! We must come to Yeshua and stay in G-d’s Word to overcome the strongholds in our lives.
When others wrong us they incur a debt against us. But Yeshua called his disciples to turn the other cheek, and Rabbi Paul taught us to leave vengeance to G-d. Joseph modeled this response: he had compassion on his brothers, forgave them, and blessed them because he recognized G-d’s justice and trusted in G-d’s providence.
Judah made himself “surety” by offering his life for the salvation of Israel. Heaven is taking applications for “Israel’s Surety” - foot soldiers who will give their lives for the spiritual freedom of Jewish people. Believers in Messiah should pray the Word of G-d over Israel, pray for a burden for Israel, and weep over the unbelief of Zion.
Revelation is about how the Bridegroom (Yeshua) was faithful to his marriage covenant with the Bride (saved Jewish and non-Jewish people from the nations). Yeshua’s Lordship, love letters, and coming reign leads us to worship. Everyone worships something. We must make the daily choice to worship him.
Does your life resemble your earthly father more than your heavenly Father? There is only one remedy.
Life events such as untimely deaths, sickness and disease, the loss of a loved one, infertility and bareness, acts of violence or injustice, violations of trust, rejection, unfulfilled expectations, and unanswered questions can cause us to wrestle with G-d. In this sermon we look at some of the principles from the Jacob's wrestling match that we can apply to our own lives when we go through times of wrestling with G-d.
Yeshua taught us that the Ruach would be like a well of living water in the life of a Believer. But sometimes our well can become stopped up. This sermon highlights some of the principles of increasing the flow of Ruach in your life from the Torah portion of Isaac re-digging the wells of his father Abraham.
Worship in Hebrews is focused on Yeshua because He passed through the veil to obtain eternal rest for our souls. Through Messiah we are cleansed from a guilty conscience, we have confidence to enter the most Holy Place by His blood, and we can draw near to G-d with full assurance. Worship in Revelation is manifested through praise and worship hymns, songs, and liturgy.
Adonai made a deal with Abraham to make Him a great nation. When G-d says He will do something, even when His promises do not appear to be materializing, you can trust that He will do it. Rather than trying to help G-d with our Ishmael’s, we should wait on the L-rd to fulfill His promise.

The sins of humanity break the heart of Adonai because He desires a Holy Remnant. Yeshua's rebuke of His congregations in Revelation chapters 2 & 3 reinforce this desire with heart-rending language: "You have lost your first love.”
Sukkot is a time of rejoicing: finding joy again in what Adonai has done. When we rejoice we can create a space for G-d to manifest His Presence in the earth. A Sukkah of Praise is built on three branches that involve remembering, praising, and proclaiming.
Does anything invoke the presence of Adonai? When Israel cried for help, Adonai defeated an impossible army. When the Apostles prayed at Pentecost, Adonai shook their gathering place and filled them with the Ruach. When Paul and Silas prayed, Adonai delivered them from jail. God’s presence manifests in response to our invocation, and the only proper response is to praise Him!
Adonai wants all people to make a decision to trust in Him for redemption and cross over into the eternal promise. Yeshua calls all people to step over into a saving trust in Him - the Jewish Messiah of Israel.
Unhealthy fear navigates life without recognizing G-d is the King and we are not. Fear believes we have to look out for ourselves, worries if there is enough provision for tomorrow, and doubts whether things will work out. We must remember the Word of the L-rd, trust God’s provision, and tell our children about His faithfulness.
Adonai required Israel to prepare sin offerings for their atonement, but these temporary sacrifices only looked forward to the ultimate sin offering He would provide. The Jewish Sages predicted two Messiahs: a suffering servant and a reigning king, and Yeshua is the One Messiah who fulfills both predictions.
The grace of Yeshua is so incredible you will have to share Messiah with your words and with your life. As we grow in His grace, our sanctified life in Messiah will be characterized by righteous living. The principle of spiritual increase teaches the Messiah will multiply our opportunities to share the Good News if we are faithful stewards.
The goal of undershepherds is to proclaim the whole truth of Scripture from the Torah to the Good News of Messiah to the coming Kingdom. Like Rabbi Paul, we are a bunch of nobodies telling everybody about the Somebody who can change anybody!
The curse of the Torah comes about by trying to achieve salvation through works based righteousness. But Messiah took the curse of works based righteousness and sin upon Himself when He died on the cross. He also gave to us the life of Ruach so that we can serve G-d and serve one another in love.
New Covenant worship is a way of life centered around Yeshua. The Ruach brings together Jews and Gentiles to fellowship and offer sacrifices of praise as a community of living stones.
The "Game Changing" events of the New Covenant ushered in by the cross of Messiah created a new way in which people would be able to worship Adonai. The significance of the New Covenant became evident when the Ruach was poured out on the Gentiles as they entered into the kingdom and became worshippers of the Messiah.
Every time we interact with the Word of God, we should insert our lives into the text as a "litmus test" to see if it changes us. The powerful influence of Yeshua in Scripture should have a dynamic effect in our spiritual walk!
Two underlying themes are developed throughout the Tanakh: Messiah’s glory and the Restoration and Salvation of Israel. Those themes are Beth Messiah's Vision!
Is your worldview shaped by the culture that surrounds you or by the Word of God that indwells you? Political correctness rarely lines up with God's will in modern times!
The Tanakh gives us vivid examples of worship through Israel’s relationship with Adonai. We also learn several specific principles of worship from Isaiah’s radical worship experience: worship is built upon the foundation of G-d's everlasting dominion, Israel as a people and nation before the Lord, and Adonai’s covenant faithfulness.
Balaam was not able to curse Israel because G-d blessed the nation. We see examples of this divine favor even today, but can individual followers of Yeshua be cursed? Looking at examples from the story of Balaam and Balak, we discover the keys to walking in the blessings of Yeshua and learn how to avoid walking in the self-destruction that comes from following our flesh.
After people receive salvation, Adonai provides a safe environment in which they can mature in the faith. God’s desire for believers’ spiritual growth and His orchestration of the maturing process flow out of His deep love for His Sheep!
When the Lord sends His Word into a situation it is going to disrupt the "Status Quo." Our reaction is paramount! Will we act in faith like Joshua and Caleb or will we go with the naysayers and hurt the heart of God?
The Torah portion this week contrasts following the cloud of Adonai's presence verses following crowd of public opinion. Scripture provides five guiding principles for following G-d's direction in your life: trust His leading, seek His voice, learn His Word, listen to the Ruach, and pursue godly counsel.
We have lost the importance of fathers speaking into their children’s lives. They need our blessing just as we all need our heavenly Father’s Blessing! How Adonai blesses you is directly proportional to how you bless others.
The body of Messiah should be singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, knowing that our war is not against flesh and blood but against the enemy of our souls. Instead of arguing about the style and song choice, we should be unified in love. We should pray and support our worship team volunteers who lead us week in and week out.
We all have a grid through which we see the world that has been influenced by various inputs. When our worldview lines up with the grid of God’s Word, we will understand the benefits of being faithful to Adonai. Faithfulness to God and His Word ensures blessings in this life, while faithlessness ensures misery. Adonai looks hopefully for people who seek to change their minds and lives to be faithful to Him.
The word of Adonai is not activated by emotions, feelings, or logic; it’s activated by faith that precedes obedience! We must humble ourselves and trust God to fulfill His promises but also obey Him. Israel trusted God and kept the Sabbath; believers prayed with confidence for the Ruach; and Abraham left for the Promised Land.
The appointed times and festivals of Adonai listed in Leviticus 23 are connected to God’s prophetic timetable and they all find their fullest meaning in the Messiah Yeshua. Shavout was partly fulfilled with the Great Commission but will be completely fulfilled when Yeshua returns. We play an important role in the remaining appointed times on Adonai's calendar that are yet to be fulfilled.
Adonai uses moms to hold families together and guide them. Let’s work in concert with the Holy Spirit to see the Lord restore our families.
If the Good News of the Messiah and His kingdom is so simple, why are so many people blind to the truth? What kind of prayer should we pray that will open their eyes and lift the veil of unbelief?
The Tanakh predicts the coming Mashiach through numerous Messianic prophecies about our Passover Lamb. Psalm 22 and Daniel 9 give us a picture of how the Messiah would suffer and die for us, as well as the period of time he would appear on earth. The historical evidence for Yeshua fulfilling those prophecies should cause all Jews to conclude He is the Passover Lamb just as Rabbi Paul did in 1 Corinthians 15.
Just like the children of Israel, we all are on a spiritual journey from slavery to sin toward freedom and service to Adonai. We mark this journey with the Biblical observances of Passover, Unleavened Bread, Bikkurim/First Fruits, The Counting of the Omer, and Shavuot. During the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the children of Israel are commanded remove all chametz/leaven from their dwellings and to eat matzah (unleavened bread) for seven days. 1 Corinthians 5 compares chametz to pride and exhorts us to remove the chametz of pride and arrogance from our hearts. At First Fruits we remember the resurrection that enables us to defeat sin. During the Omer we offer our talents and abilities to Adonai. At Shavout we recognize the supernatural power of the Ruach to empower us to be part of the harvest. On our journey we replace the bad chametz of pride and arrogance in our lives with the good chametz of confidence in the Word and the Ruach.
Gossip and judging one another has caused many a congregation to implode. The only cure is the antibiotic of God's Word applied by the Love of His Spirit!
People have different love languages in which they give and receive love best. We think we are showing love to G-d by our sacrifices, but He has expressed that His love language is obedience. If G-d wanted honesty from Nadab and Abihu, and Ananias and Sapphira, we should also show our love for Him by our obedience.
After reviewing the role of the Levites in the Tabernacle, we explore the "Tent of David" in 1 Chronicles 15 and 16 as a precursor for what worship will look like under our ultimate worship leader, Yeshua the Messiah. Hebrews 10:19-22 along with 1 Peter 2:4-5 are key passages to show Yeshua is the leader, content, and glory of our worship.
Purim is sometimes called the “Upside Down Feast” because Adonai “turned the tables around” - the Jewish extinction became the Jewish deliverance and the man who built the gallows hanged on them. The Kingdom of God is similar in that Yeshua’s principles are in stark contrast to the way the worldly system works. In the end, Adonai’s Kingdom is not “upside down.” He is simply placing us “right side” up!
When we begin to see our work as worship we will recognize how G-d has appointed us and anointed us to fulfill His purpose on the earth. If you serve faithfully your gift will make room for you to be appointed. If you ask Adonai to fill you with His Ruach you may be anointed to do His work.
The Israelites loved Adonai so much that they brought gifts to the tabernacle until Moshe had to tell them to stop. When we experience the pure love of God, we should give our hearts over to Him and serve Him with our lives. Rabbi Paul explains what it looks like to be conduits of God’s love in our relationships with others.
The enemy of our soul does all he can to keep a congregation from experiencing the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. But when God pours out His “Ruach Chen” (Spirit of Grace) upon a congregation His Shalom encompasses our hearts and minds and the enemy flees!
What does the High Priest’s garments have to do with honor in the home? Husbands and wives are to show honor to one another. Parents are to show honor to their children. Children are to bless their parents. We submit to one another out of reverence for Messiah because His submission led to our salvation.
Let’s step back and take a deep look at whether or not the love of God is reckless. The scriptures say that we love Him because He first loved us! If that is true, shouldn’t our love toward Him appear reckless?
Honoring your father and mother is a commandment that comes with a promise of inheritance. An inheritance to complete the mission that Adonai has for each of us. Parents deserve honor because they are the co-creators that Adonai used to bring us into the world. In honoring our parents we recognize that we are not an accident, or a mistake, but that we were perfectly designed with the right DNA to accomplish the mission that Adonai has for us.
Some people draw their morals from the customs of the culture, others draw their morals from Torah, and still others claim we only need Messiah. To preach Torah without Messiah is to diminish the love and grace of G-d, but to preach Messiah without the Torah is to remove the moral foundations of Scripture!
When we enter into a mindset of slavery, it's easy to give into temptation or defeat rather than choosing to fight. But Scripture teaches we are called to fight our battles against the world, the flesh, and the devil. If we persevere and fight using the armor of G-d then we will experience great victory.
What is the secret of imparting our faith to our children? Or for that matter, to anyone whom we disciple? We can identify some steps that will assure that the process will be successful, but ultimately it requires the power of Adonai’s Spirit and the patience of a mature believer in Messiah’s Grace!
As we begin a new secular year, it is a good thing to remind ourselves that the Holy Scriptures have stood the test of time, and they are an anchor for our lives. The old adage of “insanity is continuing the same actions and expecting different results” is not always true in the spiritual realm. If you keep practicing faith every day, Adonai will make sure that things change at some point - and they will change “suddenly.”
Moshe was a great prophet and deliverer of Israel, but he spoke of a greater prophet who would bring salvation to Israel and the world. Yeshua was a Torah observant Jew who met all the qualifications of the Messiah. He was rabbi and a prophet, and we can trust in Him as our magnificent Messiah.
Joseph had a lot of family drama and dysfunction in his life, but he was able to respond to with forgiveness because of his faith, hope, and love in Adonai. Likewise, the answer to the dysfunction in Corinth and in your life is having obedient faith in G-d’s Word, hope in the promises of Adonai that manifests in prayer and praise, and love that overflows into acts of lovingkindness.
How could Joseph stay faithful in spite of all the difficult times he went through? Joseph had confidence in the One who had called him and in His purpose for his life. The purpose of every believer is to be conformed to the image of Messiah. In the same way Adonai refined Joseph through his faithfulness, He is working through trials to refine all believers.
The “Shalom” of Adonai plays a vital role in so many areas of our lives. Sometimes Adonai quiets the storms of life and sometimes He lets the storms rage and He quiets His servants. Shalom teaches us as we wait on the Lord. It delivers us in times of distress. And it Helps guide us into the perfect will of G-d!
Even the most mature of Adonai’s people experienced periods of joylessness. Job wished he had never been born, David wanted to escape reality, and Elijah asked Adonai to take his life. If these men struggled, how can we experience consistent joy in our lives? Focus on the Adonai in worship, align your life with the plumbline of Adonai’s Word, say no to sin and be filled with the Roach Ha-Kodesh, develop a heart of contentment, and surround yourself with a rejoicing family.
Jacob had to come to the end of himself and have an encounter with Yeshua before he realized that he was unworthy of Adonai’s mercy. When we truly have an encounter with Yeshua we will realize that we are unworthy of Adonai’s mercy and we must also give mercy to others. Mercy requires us to forgive where we have been wronged, let the other person off the hook of debt that we feel they owe us, and not overlook sin but instead provide an atonement for it.
When someone gives you a precious gift it motivates you to give back. Adonai’s promises of provision and blessing to Jacob motivated him to give an offering at Beth-El. When God pours into our lives, we should respond by giving our will, our thanks, and our praise. If we have already developed a habit of gratitude and thanksgiving by remembering to count our blessings - especially the forgiveness we have in Messiah Yeshua, we will be able to overcome any trials and troubles which come our way.
How would you like to walk so closely with Adonai that He warns your enemies to leave you and your family alone? He did it with Abraham and Isaac, and He can do it with you. We must find out what is missing from our relationship with the Lord that diminishes His power in us.
Some of Adonai’s greatest opportunities come through calamities. We see this principle in the lives of Yeshua, Israel, Joseph, and Isaac. When going through a calamity we need to stay connected to Yeshua, our well of living water; we need to have the life of the Ruach flowing through us; we need to mediate on the promises of Adonai; we need to get our eyes off our problem and look up; we need to look for the opportunity Adonai is bringing into our lives; and we must not let the past limit our future.
Abraham’s life reminds us that we are all on a journey trying to navigate through the trials that await us. His life also indicates that Adonai is trying to intercept our wills at certain junctions of our own journeys. A judgment awaits all of us some day, but aren’t you glad that Yeshua intercepted your life and that He will be with you on that day?

Sometimes we try to counsel Adonai on how He should act in the midst of trying circumstances, but we must remember His ways are not our ways. In times of great need, Yeshua would prioritize his relationship with the Father by leaving the crowds to go pray. When can get into the presence of the Lord, he will bring healing to the wounds and hurts of our lives.
Busyness can lead to barrenness which leads to burnout and ultimately bitterness. When you stray too far from the One who produces good fruit in your life, you will lose your effectiveness and begin to experience the negative effects of the flesh. You must remember it is not what you are called to but Who you are called to. Yeshua needs to be our One Thing.
When a sailor’s compass isn’t calibrated correctly, even if it’s only slight off of north, the ship will go way off course and the results can be disastrous. Our soul is like a compass that can either be guided by the flesh or the Spirit, and when it strays even slightly from Yeshua toward feeding the flesh, we can shipwreck our lives. We all need a recalibration of our souls to point toward Yeshua. Yom Kippur is a time for us to accept Yeshua's recalibration of our souls and to return to being lead by the Ruach.
We become like the God that we envision. When our view of God becomes perverted we begin to become perverted. When we sin we feel a separation from God, and then we try to hide behind our own good works. But when we change our view of God we are changed. Are the Days of Awe supposed to be days of rejoicing or days of judgment? Rosh Hashanah is a time for us to remember that the Judge on the throne is also our loving Father. When we truly see God for Who He is we can not help but love others. This Yamim Noraim may we take off the veil of our own efforts and see God for who He is so we can love as He loves.
The new generation of Israelites in the wilderness was not spiritually ready to enter the Promised Land. Unless they dedicated their lives to their God and Redeemer by renewing their covenant commitment and learning his mitzvot, they would not be able to conquer the wilderness or the people in the land of promise. In this passage, Moshe gives seven journey principles Israel needed to mature before entering the land. We are also on a journey through life that began when entered into a new relationship with Yeshua the Messiah.
Adonai’s covenant of love is what tethered Israel to God. When we are tethered to Yeshua, His perfect love casts out all fear, He gives us grace for every situation, and He guides our paths.

The central theme of Scripture is “Repentance and Forgiveness” and there may be no grater illustration than that of Joseph. But there is a critical lesson here for the Church. One most congregations never hear.
