FUNK FOUNDATIONS #51 / James MTUMEIt has been 3 years since we lost one of the most influential percussionist Philadelphia born James Forman aka James Mtume.Raised in a musical family where his father (Jimmy Heath) and uncles formed The Heath Brothers. In the 60’s, James studiedpercussion and he started playing with Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and eventually became the percussionistfor Miles Davis. In the Miles Davis band, he hooked up Reggie Lucas (guitar), and started a song writing partnership. The duoLucas/Mtume wrote and produced mane tracks for artists. He also started his own project, Mtume, where he applied his mostinnovative sounds. I pay tribute to his boogie funk period with his band and production work which is deep in my funk foundationform E80’s….Enjoy the show!George C
