Wallace “Wally” Fanene made the transition from active military to living with disabilities. Wally served 8 years in the Army with 2nd Battalion 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He had two combat deployments; Afghanistan 2003 to 2004 and Iraq from 2006 to 2007. During his deployment in Iraq, Wally knelt on an IED which detonated taking large portions of his right arm and right leg. He earned the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal with V-Device. After almost a 2-year rehab, Wally was medically retired in 2009 but he has not slowed down, he embraces being a full-time dad, he got back on a surfboard, he does Jiu Jitsu, gets in the gym regularly, and also took up hunting.
