Finding the Silver Lining in Activities Youth activities can be all-consuming. Whether it is a sport, academic, or other pursuits, their calendars fill up quickly. This has the opportunity to value doing over being. However, it does not have to be that way. The time spent in these activities can build relationships with others and even provide valuable one on one time with a parent.

There are many reasons to see youth activities as positive. On the other hand, there are nearly as many negative aspects. That being said, the ability to create and build relationships does not have to suffer. There is a cost of time for these activities, but when properly used, that time can be utilized for gain and not a loss. Here are just a few suggestions for making the most out of your child's busy schedule.

Use Comparison to Find Blessings It is common for us to compare our lives to others in a negative way. Thus, Facebook is a painful site for many. They see happy doing great things. Meanwhile, their life is dull, boring, and full of stress. This does not need to be the case. When you look at how much better your life is than others it can relieve stress and make you laugh in a sad situation.

The approach discussed in this episode is finding a silver lining in the idea that things could be worse. We also look at how those that have it worse than we do can be sources of inspiration. When we have a bad week we can easily find examples of those that have had a worse one. In fact, the nightly news and mainstream media live off of this fact. They bring us the worst news they can find and do their best to make it feel like it happened right next door. When you compare to others you might see your worries melt away and a smile touch your face.

Audio is Important in Capturing Memories We all have cameras on us almost all of the time. Thanks to modern technology, our phones are a great way to capture and even document our lives. I have seen this with my ever-growing number of family pictures. Every year we add more year over year and pile up the memories. However, pictures are just part of the story. When you capture audio and (better yet) video with audio you can capture complete memories that are invaluable as time goes by.

In this episode, I was reminded of the value of decades old audio of childish words and laughter. These short recordings opened whole storerooms of memories and helped take me back to when the kids were younger and cuter. Take a few steps now to provide yourself with a great trip down memory lane in the future.

Perfection is the Enemy, but Easily Thwarted Many of us spend a good deal of time pursuing perfection of some sort. We try to look perfect, have a perfect yard, or hit a hole-in-one. There is nothing wrong with perfection as a goal, but it can keep us from pursuing other, more meaningful, things. This is important to consider when "good enough" is effectively as good as "perfect."

The pursuit of perfection can also keep us from delegating tasks. Our children get far more out of chores than completing it. They learn things like thinking of others, contributing to a common good, manners, and much more. When we fail to hand off a task to a child because they won't do a perfect job we are missing opportunities. Yes, we may have to go behind them and clean up, but our job is to raise imperfect children in an imperfect world. It is a good thing our perfection does not get in the way of that goal.

We Can All Use a Mentor It seems like mentors are more popular among adults than children. However, a good mentor can provide your child an avenue for learning they otherwise would miss. We want to raise them right and teach them all we know, but sometimes ours is not the right voice. A trusted mentor can get through even when our children are resistant to a message. This is helpful at young ages, but critical as the kids move into middle and high school.

Peer pressure is hard for parents to fight against. They often are the opposition to peer pressure and steadily undermined. A mentor may be able to take a different approach and provide a voice of reason that the child knows is on their side. Sometimes our children just don't like what we have to say. Thus, there is no reason to take it personally if they listen to a mentor instead. At least the message is getting through.

Sometimes it Helps to Vent Everyone and their brother have been voicing their opinion about white supremacy groups and racism. I guess it is my turn. This is not a very educational episode. However, it is a plea for embracing those different from you. They outnumber you roughly the population of the Earth to one. I also think that spewing hate back at those that display hate does not serve a purpose.

I apologize for a deviation from our normal topics, but it seems like an attempt to be a voice of reason could be helpful. Whether you agree with my position or not, we are a planet of individuals and the bigotry you use against others can easily come back at you. Learn to view each other's humanity instead of our differences and your life will be far happier and more full.

Turning a No into a Yes-and Success is sometimes a matter of perspective. Kids have goals and measures of success that often are not practical or safe. Thus, we tell our children "No" far more often than we give them a "Yes." This can create a point of conflict or at least some resistance on their part. This may be unavoidable in some cases. However, there are also times where we can move with them and provide guidance. We can change a "No" that may put them on defense into a "yes" that makes them feel supported and can build confidence.

When we show our children that we do not have to always be right and instead let them take the lead it will help them feel more comfortable with questions and even push back. This may not be apparent with young kids. However, as they grow into adolescents they may be more respectful of parents than children that have always been told "No." It is just logical that children will act in a way that reflects whether they think all requests will be met with a "no."

Point Them in the Right Direction Drive and Determination are key indicators of success in every field and focus. Anything that is worthwhile as an achievement requires perseverance and some level of effort. However, we can also bail out at almost any point in trying to achieve that goal. This is where drive and determination come in. We will encounter stumbling blocks that will either need to be overcome or we can allow them to keep us from success.

There is some part of these skills that can be taught. However, a better way to instill these attributes is to ensure proper focus. When we desire a goal and/or love the work enough then drive and determination comes to us naturally. This is where work fades away and we just do something we would do if left to our own devices. The stumbling blocks just become interesting challenges along the way. Find the things your child wants to do and you will see drive and determination rise to the surface.

Investing In A Child's Future When our children get to that age where they have to make decisions about the direction of their life, college is often a factor. At this point, we have to ask is college worth the time and financial investment? This has grown to be well beyond a $50,000 question to many families. Thus, it is worth considering the options. An immediate progression from high school to college is not the only way to go. There are steps a child can take that will make it more likely that they end up with the degree they need.

I am not for or against higher education in general. Instead, this episode looks at a few ways to get a degree without going the normal and expensive route. I also ask the question whether a degree even makes sense for your child. This is not something that can be easily answered so we look at areas to consider rather than a template that gives us the ideal answer.

Use Wow instead of How In a recent presentation by Andy Stanley (https://andystanley.com/) he mentioned the difference between a "How" and a "Wow" when hearing an idea. This is something I think we can use to program our kids for success. A simple change in the way we approach all those suggestions (silly and not) that our children toss out can lead them to success.

I recommend his leadership podcast for some other great ideas, but in this short episode, we look at a way to point your kids to a life of voicing their thoughts. A simple change to your approach will provide a value you may have never expected.

Back-To-School Part Deux In our previous episode, we looked at the finances, forms, and headaches around the back to school season. Now we will look at some ways to ease into the year. This is a perfect time to relearn old habits or even create new ones. We have talked about a reboot in the past, and this is an excellent time to do so.

Setting a schedule is important early in the year. If we don't, we will likely be off balance until the next Summer. However, getting on a schedule early, finding our rhythm, and avoiding chaos can make a year purr right along. This is where an investment in your schedule and setting a few habits will pay off big in the long run.

Back-To-School Part 1 It is that time of year. A time of buying school supplies and filling out paperwork. The time when we shed a tear as our kids head to school and then cheer as we get some of our day back. In this first of a two-part episode, we look at some ways to save money and get teachers to like us. Yes us, both our children and we parents. When we build that relationship with a teacher it can make a year much easier to get through.

Even though the school year may already be in session for your children, it is not too late to consider some things you might have missed. A bumpy start is not the end of the world. Instead, we can look at ways to adjust course and set our kids on a good path.

Learning To Drive is Stressful There are many watershed moments in our parental lives. We send the kids to school, allow them to spend the night somewhere else, and even send them off to camp. None of these match the stress caused by watching your baby drive a car. We all know it is moderately safe, but that does not stop our fears. There are all sorts of things that can go wrong. However, usually, things go right. We can reduce our fear and worry by spending those learner permit months in a car with our kid. Teach them important things like parking and defensive driving. Heck, we can even teach them how to change a flat tire.

The time we spend teaching our kids about cars and driving pays off in better sleep once our kids are driving alone. The confidence in driving we build is maybe even more for us than for them.

Creating Whitespace Allows Us to Savor Moments There are many reasons for us to slow down a enjoy our hectic lives. Those tasks that we insist must be done, do not all need to be done. In particular, they do not need to be done immediately. When we spend a little time relaxing and allowing our minds to slow down it can even improve our productivity. This episode is partially a continuation of thoughts from listening to the CEO of WhitespaceAtWork. We need to pause and slow down more often at work. However, we are passing this hectic lifestyle on to our children as well.

Removing the Blind Spots We all have things that we have learned incorrectly. This may be a saying, the meaning of a word, or even a historical fact. The challenge is to help our kids avoid falling into those gaps. When a phrase or "fact" is mentioned we need to verify it. Moreover, we need to teach our children to verify their knowledge through a dictionary or encyclopedia. This requires a healthy skepticism about everything including their own knowledge. Ask your children to explain their meaning when they use a phrase or ask them to define a word they use. This creates the habit of checking our assumptions on a regular basis.

Let Your Hair Down and Start Cheering There are great athletes that will point to the cheers of a crowd as giving them an extra boost. When you consider how little connection there is between crowd and athlete, this is amazing. However, when we think about how much our children crave positive feedback, a cheering parent can be a huge motivator. It literally can mean the difference between success and failure. Not everything is a matter of inches or small bits of additional effort. Nevertheless, a cheering parent can keep a child going and provide the periodic wins that build to victory. We can put aside being serious sometimes and get wild cheering for our kids. If not us, then who?

Finishing Can Be a Decision We have all heard that winners never quit. What about the times when a child does not care to win? These times do not make the child a quitter, just someone that wants to move on. It does not make sense to force a child to eat all the food in front of them when they are full. Likewise, it serves no purpose to encourage a child to continue an activity they do not like. Yes, there are times when chores and other unwelcome activities are required. However, this discussion is focused on activities done for enjoyment such as academic or athletic pursuits.

A continued push to finish an activity may lead to burnout or a complete dislike for the task. There are commitments children make to school and team members, but when those have been fulfilled they should not be held to something that is no longer fun. Allow your child to experiment and decide when they are done rather than holding them to an arbitrary time frame or commitment.

A Milestone Has Been Reached! 100 episodes is a milestone for any podcast. Some get there quickly if they are on a daily schedule. On the other hand, weekly releases will require almost two years before episode 100 is reached. In any case, this marks the 100th episode and roughly 35 hours of parental guidance mixed in with Dad jokes.

Looking Back At Interviews The highlights of these first 100 episodes all center around interviews for me. Thus, I wanted to look back at who I have talked to and point out the incredible stories they have shared. I also look ahead to the next 100 episodes and some of the goals I have moving forward. Thank you for sharing this journey, you are appreciated more than you know. Blessings to you all!

Focus is Fine in Moderation In past episodes, we have looked at the problems that can arise from pushing our children towards specialization early in life. Whether we are looking at academic or athletic pursuits, burnout can hit early in life when we push too hard. However, these warnings do not mean that we should keep our kids from sticking with things for a time.

We live in a task driven society and can be tempted to push (or help) our children to accomplish tasks quickly. This approach can miss the point of some tasks. There are times where the journey is the most important part of a task. Thus, rushing to the end will entirely miss the point. When we spoon feed our children through activities so they can skip ahead to the end we minimize the problem-solving skills that can be learned. Do not be afraid of some "quiet" or "alone" time for your children. Sometimes the best thing to do is allow them to work through things on their schedule.

Red Tape Shortcuts and Reducing Paperwork We add to our paperwork load from almost the moment child is born. It starts with birth certificates and filling out release forms. Unfortunately, that is only the beginning. As our kids grow up they head off to school and join activities of all sorts. Each of these steps includes forms of one sort or another. This fact alone makes reducing paperwork a goal worth pursuing.

When you have a large family, the paperwork can become overwhelming. Thus, we look at ways to reduce paperwork, simplify tracking your data, and generally spending less time filling forms. This is not an episode that covers a big issue. However, it may be one that saves you the most time.

Incremental Improvement Whether we look out ourselves or our children, there is a desire to get better. We may strive for perfection, but we all know that is impossible. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon to push ourselves and our children to at least become "the best." However, this also is not really feasible. It also is a big goal to lay on anyone. Instead, let's work on building habits that allow us to become better day by day. This approach is much more achievable and can still lead to great results. It just takes time.

Every journey can be broken down into a series of steps. We can look at this fact to provide into accomplishing any goal. Even the big, dreamer kind of goals we like to place on our children. Instead of focusing on the big goals, focus on the steps to advance towards a goal or goals. This provides regular victories and easily achievable goals that avoid burnout and discouragement.

Get Over Yourself Parents can get wrapped up in parenting at times. We have so much on our minds that we take the easy way out. We focus on rules and guidelines in our homes and for our children. As we dwell on these rules we suck the humanity and love out of our relationships. Instead of well-balanced children, we create sticklers for the letter of the law.

Our kids need a break from the struggles of life just like we do. It is ok to take a "night off" and let your kids slide on those "nice to have" rules we setup for them. This includes things like chores, proper behavior, and even cleanliness. Skipping a tooth brushing does not create a cavity. Yes, you want to create habits, but occasionally allow for some easing of those rules so your kids can enjoy their childhood. Never fear, you can return to parenting the next time.

Succes is More Likely When you Schedule Tasks We have covered topics like rebooting your life and finding time for these new goals. Now it is time to look at how to bring those dreams to reality. A great tool for making steady progress on anything is to schedule it. We plan important things like doctor appointments all the time. However, we seem to leave many things to be done "when we get to it."

This random approach to our aspirations is a great way to live a life unfulfilled. That is not to be over-dramatic. Instead, it is a logical progression. When we leave things to be done when time permits they simply do not get done. Our schedule fills with things that rise to the importance of being on our schedule. Even worse, we will our time with these activities. Schedule an hour long meeting slot for fifteen minutes of content and see how long the meeting goes. We do this throughout our life. That is why our junk drawers and storage closets are always overflowing.

When your job and hobby coincide, then work fades away. You are not working; you are doing the thing you love.

All of this talk of a job you love may seem unrealistic. Nevertheless, it is attainable and the key to success. When you love your work, you will be more driven, productive, passionate, and even successful than those that do not. In this episode, we discuss some options you can look at for creating a side hustle that not only nets you more income, but it is also the first step towards a happier life.

You can Stay Within the Rules or Break Them There are only a few ways to look at the rules in life. We can walk within them, push the boundaries, or ignore them completely. Playing by the rules is not just for kids and games. The approach we take to life (fair or cheat) seems to be set in our nature during the early years. Keep this in mind as your young ones play in the neighborhood or compete in school and activities. We can set the example for them to grow into strong adults. There is often that desire to find a win. However, when this causes rules to be broken it can paint them as easily ignored.

This seemingly harmless path can lead to struggles in later life and constant respect issues. When we teach a child to ignore the rules when they can get a win it sets a precedent. This can cause no end of headaches when the rules they break are ours.

Past Failures Do Not Block Future Success The challenges we face in life can be exhausting. Nevertheless, that does make them bad or even something we should avoid. When we overcome an obstacle that becomes a win we can hand our hat on. The key to success is to feed on those past victories for energy during the hardest times.

Our children will be much more likely to succeed in life when we show that challenges should be embraced. This is where we need to set an example. Teach your kids to find how to turn failures into a future success and lean on the tough times as an opportunity to grow.

Use Vacation to Rest and Recharge Our lives get busier every year. The mere idea of taking a break seems to be harder to conceive each year as well. This filled to the brim approach to life is not just for adults. Kids have a full plate of options during the extended break. The options range from traditional summer camps to ways to improve their athletic and academic skills to chances to learn new skills.

It is easier than ever to keep our children busy during the Summer. However, this misses a key point of the break. There needs to be time to reflect, rest, and refocus. The school year drains our kids as much as it does us. Thus, those little brains and bodies need to find some rest and not be tossed into the next activity. Not only does this constant activity approach to life burn them out, it also makes it harder to have family time and events. Take a break and enjoy the Summer at least a little bit.

Getting Better in a Busy Life When we talked about a life reboot, it was left as something easier said than done. Finding time to exist is hard enough, but make improvements? It just cannot be done. Nevertheless, in this episode, we look at the areas to review in your life assessment. We step back and take a look at the forest instead of staring at the trees. Then we move to some ways that we can find time to make these desired improvements. Time management is a topic that will be covered in greater depth in future. However, I wanted to give you a few starting suggestions.

Finding time to do anything in our busy lives can be a challenge. However, when we look at where we spend our time, we will likely find some areas that can be improved. Maybe we waste time that can be reclaimed to be happier. Maybe we spend time on activities that can be batched or automated. We also end this episode with a challenge instead of a joke. It is time to get serious about living a better life.

Embracing Watershed Moments Children have regular events that are perfect for resetting their life and expectations. Every new school year is such an opportunity but in some areas (such as grades) every grading period can be a new start. These opportunities to reboot your life are great ways to relieve stress and keep a positive outlook. As adults, it is easy to get into a rut. However, when we find some time to assess and adjust our lives we can keep that childish optimism alive.

A life reboot is more than just a New Year Resolution. In this process, we examine what we want from life and how we are doing to achieve our goals. Think of it as creating a report card for our life. A new job or other "life event" often can trigger a life reboot, but let's look at making that a more regular occurrence.

Explaining Magic and Misdirection Can Be Eye-Opening Sleight of hand and misdirection (sometimes called magic) are fascinating to kids and easy to teach. The dexterity required may sometimes seem too much. However, kids are happy to buy into these tricks and thus set the bar low. While teaching a skill like this can help you be a "cool parent", it is much better to use it as an introduction to life lessons. A few minutes of instruction can provide you a way to discuss topics like believing what you see, patience with others, and avoiding being fooled by others. This episode provides a combination of a new skill, entertaining your kids, and a little education. What could be better?

This is one of those questions that are harder to answer than one might think. A step into the workforce is a big one. When you children grow old enough to get a job there are a lot of factors to consider. They may need to stay focused on education. Also, they may be dedicated to sports or extra-curricular activities. Thus, their schedule may already be too full. Why add to their load? The value of a job is important immediately, but also down the road. The skills they learn like money management and sticking to a schedule will prove valuable later in life. In this episode, I look at three slightly different paths my kids have taken. Then, we cover how that worked for them. Maybe these examples will help you learn from our successes and failures.

Adding More Kids is Incrementally More Work This is a rare episode where we look at that moment where you are considering a large family. Alternatively, you might be increasing the size of your current one. Once the kids outnumber the adults there is a change in how most families are run. We stop to deal with the kids individually. Instead, the kids are managed as a group and family is the focus. This does not mean our kids lose their individuality. Instead, we parent the family instead of a bunch of individuals. Therefore, adding a couple more kids (via adoption, multiple births, etc.) is not that much more to handle than the family you have today. If you are wondering whether you can take on more, but really want to take another step. This is something to consider. The payoff of a large family does get better as you add kids. At least in my experience.

Fatherhood is More Than a Job There are many stereotypes about fatherhood. Well, about Dads, and that colors our view of what fatherhood should be. A dad is more than an ATM that dispenses money and the guy that takes you to sporting events. A true father is an important part of their child's' life. The work related excuses fro skipping time with our kids are just that, an excuse. A father needs to bring his special toolset to the parenting equation to combine with what mother brings to the table. These two distinct roles help a child to grow up into a well-balanced adult rather than spending a lot of time on a consulting couch.

Healthy Eating is a Basis for a Better Life Healthy eating is one of the most impactful habits we can establish. This also happens to be one that can be started early in life. When you lead your child to make good dietary decisions in those early years, it will pay off with good decisions as they get older. We can help set them on the right course by limiting fast food meals and offering healthy snacks along with the "junk food" that all children love.

Unfortunately, the good habits start with us as parents. We need to be aware of how often we cut corners for meals in order to get to that activity on time or because we are too tired to cook. Whether we set certain days of the week to always be sit-down meals or we push our kids to try new foods, there is a choice to be healthy. Our bodies naturally crave a healthy diet so teaching our kids the value of one will also help us feel better and stay out of a doctor's office.

Wait for Obedience Don't Demand It One of the struggles parents have is obedience from tweens and teens. Yes, they do tend to tune us out and forget what we have asked. However, we also tend to look for an immediate response rather than allow them time to comply. They have tasks and goals just as we do. Thus, they get frustrated with our interruptions and requests to "drop everything" so they can get a chore completed. Rather than pounce on them for not immediately responding, allow them time to complete what they are doing and then get that chore done.

This approach is what we want for ourselves so why not give them the same respect. It may not only reduce tension in the house, it may also increase mutual respect. Of course, this also allows you to ask them to "chill" when they have an immediate demand of you. That respect goes both ways.

Few Comparisons Leads to Childish Drama We have all heard our child exclaim something is the best or worst.  Although we see it as hyperbole and childish drama, the child may not.  Consider the short time and limited experience your children have had.  That apparent little event can also be one of the most impactful in their lives so far.

We can brush such things aside and tell our children their concerns are not warranted.  However, this minimizing of their "first" does not help them while they are experiencing it.  Share the moment with them and give them tools to handle these trials of life while they are young.  The effort will pay off in an ability to cope better with all life hands them later on.

Adult Productivity Technique for Kids The Pomodoro technique is a popular way to improve productivity among adults. It embraces our natural rhythms of learning and rest. It only makes sense that a similar approach works for children as well. We complain about the short attention spans of modern children. However, we seem to have a similar struggle as adults. Try building these patterns of focus and rest with your kids to help them become more productive and get more out of every minute.

This is a simple concept that has a broad range of applications. It may be hard to try to use these rhythms during the school year, but the Summer is different. Every child is different so these suggestions may need some tweaking to work in your family. This may even help reduce arguments around sharing.

Create a Routine to Cultivate Success One of the best things that a parent can cultivate in their children is a routine.  Of course, good habits are great.  However, getting a child into a routine is not only healthy, it prepares them for life.  Simple things like hygiene and quiet times can provide a solid foundation as a child grows up.  Larger routines like practicing a skill or physical improvement can even lead a child to greatness.  In this episode, we look at some ways to get a routine started and maintained.  The younger we start, the better.

Winning and Losing Carry Momentum When your child is winning then there are no worries. However, when your child seems to suffer a loss everywhere they turn it can cause depression and a sense of doom. It can be hard to turn around a child particularly when they have made a series of bad decisions to get them in a hole. Fortunately, although there is a sort of momentum that winning and losing carry, they can also be turned around. A great way to get on a winning track is to find small victories. This may require a lot of simplification and creative thinking, but it is possible. Find a win, no matter how small, to get your child something positive they can use to take that first step. Use that little win to find another little win and repeat until you have built a juggernaut of success your child can ride.

Religion and Politics are Worth Discussing Our core beliefs are important to pass down to our children. Whether we are talking religion or politics, we all have beliefs about the world in which we live. When we explain why we believe the way we do it helps our children understand instead of parrot ideas. This explanation helps their critical thinking skills and can help them relate to others. Core beliefs and confidence in the same can avoid being offended easily while also making one more comfortable when challenged. Our children do not exist in a bubble. Thus, explaining alternative points of view can also help our kids grow into well-adjusted adults. In this episode, we look at ways to expand views while maintaining core beliefs.

Party Time!

Regular celebrations like a birthday party, or other milestone markers are common in the life of a child.  Unfortunately, the cost of a party for children is starting to rival one for adults.  There is a broad range of activities available to modern children that are new to this generation.  However, that does not mean that "old school" activities do not still hold a lot of value.  In this episode, we look at some activities from our childhood that can be an excellent lost-cost solution to our party problem.  These are ideas that build friendships and memories so what more can one ask for?

Shake It Off We all make mistakes. However, our parental guidance mistakes do not "ruin" our children. It can be hard to avoid second guessing parental decisions when your kids make bad choices. We tend to embrace the responsibility we have for our children and society often reminds us as well. Our children are a reflection of us, but they do make their own decisions. Although this means good kids can come out of a bad family life, it also allows for rotten kids from the best circumstances. As in many areas of life, we should own our mistakes and move forward, not live in a world of regret.

In this episode, we get an introduction to Casey Palmer and his family life. Although his situation may be very different from yours, I think you will still see how families of any kind have a lot of similarities. We cover some specifics like life in the big city. Mature Content Commonly Watched By Kids 13 Reasons Why is a recent Netflix original series based on a book.  It looks in depth at a suicide victim and the aftermath as she sends a set of tapes to those that failed her.  It is rated TV-MA and easily earned that rating.  However, kids of all ages are watching this and it is causing discussions in schools across the country.  In some cases, schools have banned discussing the show, but that is only more likely to stir interest in the series and book.  In this episode, I try to stay spoiler free and offer some reasons why parents of middle-schoolers and above should watch this as well as some discussions it can spark.

Allow Kids to be Kids When we share adult worries with our kids it can create more of a burden than we know. They are still children after all and have childish perceptions of the world. Struggles that are part of our normal day can be overwhelming to them. We also can undermine our spouse by sharing things that are not suitable for childish ears. This is a struggle more often for single parents as they look for adult conversation. It may not seem like much, but consider your audience when you share and converse to avoid piling adult worries on childish shoulders. Homeless, but Still A Dad In this final episode of the interview series, we talk about Craig's latest book and some of the homeless experiences that led to it. He talks about how his choices led to his homelessness but also allowed him to stay in his daughter's life. These were tough decisions for anyone. However, Craig knows that a true Father has only one option in a situation like this. Your children need a Dad so you sacrifice for their sake.

Craig has written a couple of books including his latest, "Nowhere to lay my head." We talk about the forward in this series, but the book is more than worth a read. Protecting is not Always the Answer We always want to keep our kids safe. However, in this episode, we consider situations where they willingly take on risk. Our kids will never be heroes without facing risk and getting out of a protective bubble. It is hard to be a parent when a child is determined to face danger and risk for the service of others. However, you might have to let your chick spread their wings to reach their potential. Although protecting them is important, we should consider when protection turns to stifling.

Meeting a Need for Divorced Dads In part three of the interview series, we discuss Craig's search for help and support during his divorce. Unmasking The Imposter Imposter syndrome is a state where someone successful sees a situation as surreal. It may be a dinner in their honor, a speech in front of a large crowd, or a championship win. This fear or flash of uncertainty can occur in people that are wildly successful and seem ultimately confident. In this episode, we look at some potential reasons behind this sort of reaction. We follow up with some ways to raise children that do not have this reaction. Although this is a minor syndrome at times, it can be damaging. Luckily, it is one that may be easily avoided.

Thus, we return to some discussions of self-confidence and how to instill it in our children. We look at building a work ethic and creating comfort from the fruits of our labor. This focus on how success has been earned can provide a solid foundation. How we achieve success may include luck, but that does not mean we do not deserve to be there.

Stay In Their Life As we continue the interview with Craig Daliessio we spend some time discussing the impact of divorce. As I was editing this episode it occurred to me that Craig is truly a giant among men when it comes to being a Dad. He may truly be the "ultimate dad." He had every opportunity to bail out. However, he took his role as a Father seriously and stayed committed to it. In this discussion, Craig goes through mindset as he realized divorce was going to be his reality. We talk about how his daughter has shown great inner strength to become the young lady she is and see where that inner strength likely came from.

Craig has written a couple of books including his latest, "Nowhere to lay my head." We talk about the forward in this series, but the book is more than worth a read. Limitations to Creativity A parent has to teach their children about rules and limitations. Whether these are rules of nature or society, they must be taught. However, we know that rules are meant to be broken. Part of the challenge of life is finding ways to bend and break rules. Some would call this "thinking outside of the box." Thus, a parent that wants to raise a creative thinker has to address to the dichotomy of understanding and following rules while challenging them. Communication is often the key, but it takes more than that. Instead of asking for the rules to be followed, a parent should also explain why the rules exist. A practice of explaining why rules are there will teach deeper lessons and help a child build a solid foundation. Thus, they will be able to do the right thing without regard for the rules.

Kid Dates Offer Individual-Focused Conversation When parents have more than one child to raise it can become easy to miss out on individual time with each child. Thus, in this episode, we look at kid dates. This may be as simple as taking your child with you on an errand run. However, it is even better when it is an activity or event that allows the child to feel special. Mix in an activity they enjoy like a favorite fast food place or hobby store. This makes the time not only good for conversation, it also helps them feel like it is a "treat." Create these times for safe and open discussion early on and it will pay off big in the future.

Teach Individuality Our children use labels and are labeled at an early age.  These labels point out similarities in a group.  However, they also ignore differences among individuals.  This can become a way to discount and dehumanize others.  Almost as bad, it ignores how each of us is unique.  When we teach our children that generalities are only generally correct then we help them avoid bigotry and ill-informed decisions.

When we teach our children that every person is unique and has value we also teach our children their value.  This helps both self-confidence and social interaction that are important life-skills to possess.

Blame The System In this last part (four, for those keeping score) of the Karen Lock Kolp interview, we discuss ways to make the system and rules the bad guy. This frees us up as parents to simply shower our children with love, lend a sympathetic ear, and teach them that consequences are inevitable. We continue our look at accepting blame for our miss-queues and teaching our children about forgiveness. We wrap it all up with some experiences in dual-enrollment programs and how those can help kids get a good start on the next phase of their life.

Negotiating is not a Bad Thing There is often a negative tone to suggesting that someone is a good negotiator. Negotiating has been shuffled into the same category as used car sales staff and other slick operators. This is not really how it works in life though. There are all sorts of legitimate reasons to use negotiating skills. Salary, purchases and even life choices like a spouse may require the ability to haggle over details.

These sort of skills can be taught at an early age. In fact, they seem to be a natural progression as children learn that life is more than black and white. It may start with steps like rewarding a child that asks (always a good starting point) and work up to rewarding good negotiating attempts. In this episode, we look at some other options and how these skills can help a child later on.

That is Not My Child One of the challenging times in a parenting career is when a child does something completely out of character. This always seems to be a bad thing. It is not often I hear a parent say that a success is "not like my child." The claim that it is not your child is obviously incorrect as it is your child that just performed the action. However, the action can be completely out of character for the child and something they never do again. Although the action may be a challenge to deal with, you should also look for a reason why. Sometimes these out-of-character actions point to struggles that require parental involvement. It may be to guide your child through difficult times, teach them how to cope, or give them a tool. Look beyond the action itself and make sure there is not additional work to be done to get your child back on track and avoid one time slips from becoming the norm. Even Parents can Ask For Forgiveness In part three of the interview with Karen Lock Kolp, I ask her a few deep questions. We look at experience vs. education when it comes to child raising. Then she discusses her biggest mistakes and successes as a parent. The two extremes tie together in a way that can make us all look a little closer at our missteps. This also should provide a little more hope as you navigate the parenting world. Years of education are no match for experience. Particularly when you consider how unique your children are.

Protecting Our Kids It is natural for a parent to worry about their kids.  We base that worry on our own experiences and what we have learned from others.  However, it is important to remember that our children may not have the same experiences.  When we base our protection and guidance on our fears we are perpetuating those fears.  Instead of projecting fear onto our children, we should discuss our experiences.  They may choose the same path as us, but maybe they will find a new approach.  They might even help us face our fears and break the cycle.

Get Up and Move There are so many excuses to sit still for modern children. This may be Internet viewing, tablets, phones, or hand-held game systems. With all of these distractions, it is more important than ever to instill a habit of physical activity. You do not have to sign you child up for little league or drag them to the gym. Try some simple activities like taking a walk or assigning them some chores. When a child is used to activity in their youth it makes it more likely they will continue to be active as an adult. This can not only extend their life, it can improve their quality of life.

Grades Are Important, Just Not That Important Schooling is a major part of our children's lives. Thus, getting good grades and preparing them for the "real world" seems to be a constant topic of discussion. A grade is a great tool for marking progress. However, I think we can miss the greater point. The objective should be learning and advancing while preparing for a career and adult life. When too much focus is on grades and getting to college we are aiming too low. College is the beginning of the rest of their lives, not the end result.

In this episode, I talk about some alternatives to grades and different areas of focus that may be a better solution for your child. Academics and particularly the structured form (homework, study, quizzes, etc.) are not always a good measure of a child. As with all things in life, a little moderation and thinking outside of the box can go a long way.

Sleep Walking and Night Terrors I am not an expert on sleep disorders and issues. Thus, they are a bit scary when I encounter them. It may have to do with most of those experiences occurring in the middle of the night. Thus, everything has a surreal sort of feeling to it.

This is an episode where I share some sleep issues our family has encountered to help shed a little light on them. If you run into similar situations it may help to know that you are not alone and others have faced the same worries.

Teach Kids to Be Comfortable With Who They Are As a parent, we know that there is a big difference between those that are comfortable in their skin and those that are not.  We can teach valuable skill this to our children by honestly accepting their failures and their successes.  When you point to gifts and burdens as part of what makes every child unique then you give value to all of the features of that child.  Help them to see the beauty in who they are rather than looking for accolades from others.

Blending a Family is Not Easy A blended family is one of the hardest feats to achieve.  It may seem like a negative attitude, but it is just a fact of life.  Much like a couple that marries late in life, a blended family already has a lot of history to make them "set in their ways."  Moreover, blending a family requires the integration of several people and personalities.  In the end, creating a blended family is still a worthwhile pursuit.  Just do not set the bar too high too soon.  Like everything good in life, it takes time and effort.

Tough Love Has Two Parts A parent that does not understand tough love will struggle to raise their children. There are two sides to this approach. There is the "tough" side of it and the "love" side. When our children have to face consequences for their actions it can be very tough and painful. For us as parents sometimes more than for our kids.

It is also important to remember to bring love into your approach. A child should be taught that consequences come from their actions. They are not loved less by their parents due to bad choices. Even a child that makes a long string of bad decisions should still feel their parent's love. This makes consequences easier to understand and separates love from justice.

A Moment of Silly Lasts a Lifetime Parents are not known for their silliness. Well, maybe that is a part of being a Dad in some households. However, it is rarely the first descriptive word a child uses for any parent. I am not advocating a parent become known for their silliness, but instead that they sprinkle it into their routine. A silly moment created by a parent can cut the tension and completely derail a ranting child. Better yet, a silly moment can be so unique that it leaves a lasting memory for the children that witness it. There is more to being an adult than being serious all the time. Although you may know that, your children may not. Therefore, you will be giving them a great gift when you let them in on our little secret.

Do You Take This Man? In this third and final part of the Michael Meloche interview, we look at the college years and a wedding. We started this interview with his wedding and get to wrap it up with a Father handing off his daughter. The big event does not go off without a hitch. Although it is not quite as bad as the movie "Father of the Bride," it has its own dramatic (and humorous) moments. We even get treated to the idea that an aisle needs to be wider than the bride's dress.

We touch on childhood sweethearts, saving for college and the mother of all events, a wedding. This all has a happy ending as we see that even a Father that shows up later in life can earn the love and adoration of his little girl.

When Siblings Parent Sometimes siblings gang up on each other. This ganging up was a regular occurrence in our family for a few years. The older ones were trying out their "responsible adult" personas by nit-picking the youngest. These sort of situations can become very hard for a child to deal with. A home needs to feel safe and allow a child to relax and be their self. When ganging up occurs it can remove the child's ability to retreat somewhere safe and cause long term harm.

Whether the ganging up is due to personality differences, parenting confusion, or other reasons, it should be addressed. Talk to your children about what is acceptable and point out that they are bullying their sibling. It might help to use your parental powers to tip the scales. These are the cases where you should step in and defend the out-numbered child. Letting everyone know that you are on the case provides an excellent example. Better yet, it gives support to the one child while teaching the gang.

Make The Most of a Rainy Day A rainy day can be a headache. The kids have their schedules knocked out of whack and it often moves them to their default time killers. Whether the default is watching movies, bingeing a series, or playing video games, it is not likely the best use of time. These days can be an opportunity to bond with your kids and create some quality time rather than waiting for the sun to come out.

Although these suggestions require some time from you, it is time well spent. We spend a lot of our time worrying about how to make quality time for the family. Why not "steal" a rainy day of time and turn it into a memorable time. This is so much better than trying to just find a way for the day to end.

An Easy Adoption In part two of the interview with Michael Meloche we talk about the adoption of his daughter Jessie. We go into some of the events that made them decide that adopting was the right choice. Nevertheless, there were potential struggles with an absent parent. Also, we look at why some things work best when you enlist the aid of an expert.

We then move on to parenting when you are new to the job. In this situation, we have a parent that is experienced and been around for the life of the child. This situation makes them a new-comer to the party. Thus, the parent relationship is not equal between the parents. However, we see where a good relationship with a child can help smooth over the bumps as we guide them through life. As always, we see where the key to good parenting is loving your child and them knowing that they are loved.

Take Pictures Often We have cameras with us almost all the time. This provides the opportunity to document our kids through pictures. Take advantage of this blessing by snapping regular pictures of your kids and all their events and activities. Make sure you save them and add notes along the way. If you want to go a little crazy, like I did, you can even create a website.

We use social sites like Facebook to show off our kids all the time. However, Facebook may not always be available. Use multiple storage options to keep your pictures safe and accessible to your children decades from now. Do not forget to add a little note or description to your pics along the way. Just a few minutes a week spent on documenting photographs can help avoid the "who is that?" reaction to those photos in the future. If nothing else, taking all those pictures makes it easy to build an awesome and embarrassing collage of photos for graduations.

Helping Your Kids With Grief We all grieve differently. This is even more obvious when you are trying to help kids work through grief. There are times that they will work through their mourning as the child they are when it occurs. However, they may have to mourn or grieve again when they get older and have more capacity to truly process the loss or tragedy.

Based on personal experience, I look at how the mourning period for children may be delayed for years. The young mind effectively puts things on pause until they mature enough to understand what they have gone through. Thus, grief counseling is always recommended when children are involved, but do not declare victory too soon. The true battle may be yet to come and you should be ready to revisit old wounds. The wounds may appear to be healed, but it may help for the scabs to be pulled off so the damage can be assessed by an older and more capable child.

When a Man Becomes a Dad In part one of the interview with Michael Meloche we look at the love at first site story that started it all. We talk about connecting to a daughter that is already a teenager. Then we look at how his relationship with his daughter made her very happy when he married her mother. This interview series covers a challenging situation that is becoming more common. We have a father coming into a family and adopting his wife's child to make them a solid unit and fill the hole left by a birth father. Michael is also the "middle child" of the family with nearly the same difference in age to his wife as it is to his daughter. This spanning of the generation turns out to be a great way to help everyone understand each other.

Parenting can quickly become an overwhelming job. We have a full plate every day and become consumed with raising our children. This is not all there is to life. Schedule regular date nights with your spouse, or just for yourself. These are times where you can get away from being a caregiver for an hour or two and allow yourself to relax. Occasionally taking a long bath or hot shower is not enough. Get out and have some discussions that go beyond your life as a parent. This is at least as important for single parents as it is for couples.

A couple should use the date to focus on each other and keep alive the sparks that led to their marriage in the first place. When Mommy and Daddy are happy life is better for the whole family. Sometimes our children are treated as an extreme. Either perfectly good or perfectly evil. In these cases where a child can do no wrong or do no right, they are not given the respect they deserve. They also will not learn valuable skills for later in life. As parents, we are more likely to treat our children as a golden child. However, just as others may be too easy on our kids, we may be too hard on them.

Both of these extremes create a "bubble" for the child that is a disservice to them. When you allow failure, you provide opportunities to learn and gain wisdom. When you praise success, you provide reinforcement of desired behavior. We are not Pavlov's dogs, but we still need a pat on the back when we do good, and a thump on the nose when we do bad. Children are even more susceptible to this form of feedback because they are still trying to figure things out in life.

God, Guilt, and Grants

We wrap up the interview with Michelle West with a brief discussion of how her faith carried her through the darkest days. Then, we shift gears and look ahead at higher education options. There is a lot of money available for those that have been impacted by cancer so we touch on a few ways to find them. We also touch on how advisors and counselors provided for those struggling can be a large blessing.

We mentioned a Google search for cancer-related scholarships. However, the site, http://www.fastweb.com/college-scholarships/articles/cancer-scholarships is a great start. It lists several options and is worth a look for anyone impacted by cancer. St. Jude has been mentioned throughout this interview series and they are an incredible group of caregivers. I have never met anyone that did not find them to be top-notch in skills and bedside manner. You can learn more or donate at https://www.stjude.org.

Discipline Vs. Love When you discipline children it is important to be consistent. Thus, our reactions and punishments for bad decisions should be the same every time. When we do this, it is easy to explain the "why" for consequences. Our children are new to the whole right and wrong concept when they are born so we have to teach and model right and wrong. When we react emotionally with anger (aka over reacting) we can send confusing messages. These messages can be completely undesired. For example, instead of teaching a child not to hit others, we are teaching them to not make Dad mad. Even worse, we might be teaching them, don't hit others while we are watching a football game.

I have used set rules and consequences to help me be consistent. This has the additional effect of allowing the rules to be the "bad guy" rather than the parent enforcing the rules. We can even occasionally be the "good guy" and offer a reduced sentence. We want to emphasize that we are helping them avoid duly earned consequences. Therefore, we can be seen as weaving love and sympathy into our discipline.

Stealing Happiness From The Future In this episode, we are introduced to "Future Tim." This is a construct used to push concerns off into the future. Granted, this also can be used to kick problems down the road. We discuss using intelligence and experience to determine when we have to face problems and when we can take a break. Unfortunately, reality has a tendency to impose itself on our thoughts, but a sort of focused daydreaming can help us soften the blow. On the other hand, we can also steal pain from the future. The discussion also covers avoiding that since we all would rather not suffer more than we must.

This is not quite adding to our blessings. Instead, it is a way to increase the enjoyment of the blessings we have, while reducing stress. Better yet, when we steal happiness from the future we might even be creating a happiness that never truly occurs. This emotional sleight-of-hand trick is easy to learn and an excellent way to reduce stress.

Best Day Ever In part three of the interview with Michelle Angelici West we cover the post-chemo aftermath. We talk about Tyler being pronounced clean from cancer, the best birthday gift, and the new normal for the family. Surviving cancer takes a lot out of you, but when you beat it, you have an appreciation for life. Tyler is no exception to this rule.

The travel that was restricted for years has now returned to the family. There are side effects and concerns for Tyler due to all the chemo treatments. Also, there is the fear of cancer returning. However, the trials and tribulations the family has gone through reinforced their embrace of the time we have together. This painful chapter in their lives is only a chapter and we see them looking forward with renewed vigor. There are sympathy and sadness for those that have not had this happy ending. However, Tyler looks ahead to living a life that honors them all. If you have a fifth grader, you will be happy to hear that Tyler has grown into a normal kid in many ways. All the stress, worry, and sadness of the years has been washed away by a smiling, healthy young man that is ready to change the world.

A Beautiful Mess Kids are messy, but that is part of what makes raising them so much fun. There is that old phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Remember that the next time your kid reminds you of Pigpen in Peanuts. With the right attitude, that exhausting work ahead becomes a beautiful mess.

This is an episode about enjoying every moment rather than worrying about the potential clean up later. This includes those times where the kids are loud, or just plain don't sleep on our schedule. Kids will be kids is more than a wise phase. It is a warning at times, but it is also a promise. When you allow your kids to be kids you are allowing them to bless you with their youth.

Even as your children get older and "grow up," they will still create their share of messes. Some are easy to clean, others are long lasting and might even leave stains. However, all of that is part of growing up and learning about life.

Getting Down on Their Level We naturally get down on the same level as our children when they are very young. When they crawl, we crawl. We adjust our vision to see what they are looking at. This desire to see life through our kid's eye needs to exist throughout their lives. It may seem hard to get to the same place our children are as they get older. However, practice makes perfect. They will have different interests and schedules. This should not stop us from joining them and being a steady presence in their life. Yes, it is a little thing to do. The payoff is amazing. When we are the parent that always connects with our children, we will be more of a comfort when they need us. We may even be able to see trouble coming and use our connection with them to help them avoid some of life's pains. In any case, a little empathy never hurt.

Faith, Family, and Friends In order to get through our darkest times, we have to lean on others. As we continue the interview with Michelle West we talk about how faith played its part, how the family came together, and how friends offered support. This network of love and prayers helped them through their toughest times. We also look at how paying it forward can help as the family turns to opportunities to help others. They find out that even though their journey has been difficult, they can find a silver lining and help others facing similar difficulties.

The story continues with some difficult days and tough situations as Tyler went through treatments. There were some scary times. However, they made it through and found ways to keep things as normal as possible for the rest of the family. Those dark times even lead to some great moments when they saw a chance for Tyler to get through it all and one day live the life of a normal child. Confidence and Success Confidence and Success tend to go hand-in-hand. One can argue which of these come first, but it is still easier to instill confidence than it is to manufacture success. Since we all want our kids to grow up to be successful, we need to teach confidence at an early age. Thus, when they make a mistake we should focus on helping them to do better in the future. This is more productive than shaming them for the past.

We can see some excellent examples of this approach when we look at popular coaches and mentors. These leaders build on the positives and look for ways to overcome the negatives. They do not harp on the negatives and treat failure as a shameful or avoidable event. Failure is a part of success. However, we must learn from our failures not shy away from them or be made to feel inadequate because of them. Failure should not be a point of pride, but it also should not be an albatross around our necks. Accept that failure is a step to success. Ensure your children keeping taking those steps rather than get mired down in shame.

Social Media Bullies The impersonal nature of social media can make it very easy to be mean and cruel to others. This has lead to a lot of cyber-bullying and even unintentional consequences from venting sessions. We can block our children from social sites (easier said than done). However, it is better to find ways to build up self-confidence early in life. This has always been the best way to deal with bullies and negative feedback. The effort to get away from bullies has led many school systems to take a strong stance against them. Unfortunately, this sometimes kicks the problem down the road. Thus, in our effort to protect our children from bullies, we forget to teach them how to handle those situations.

As always, the best approach is to walk through these situations with your children. They get the exposure to a tough situation along with guidance on how to handle it. This is how we teach them to fish instead of giving them a Happy Meal.

Fighting Cancer is not Fun Tyler West was a normal first grader until he was diagnosed with Leukemia. In this episode, we continue a talk with his mother about the struggles and pains he and his family faced. We look at how fighting cancer is a family struggle. It is not all bad though because we see how a family helps lend strength to the afflicted and shares in the struggles as well as victories.

This is not an easy story to hear, but it is a great view into the strength even young children can have. We talk about Tyler's sisters and their reactions as well as other family members. All of this combines to weave a story of help coming from unexpected places. On the lighter side, we look at the origin of the #suckitcancer tag used in Tyler updates. It may seem a crude phrase, but cancer is a crude disease so it can get over itself. It is part of our human nature to have favorites. This extends to our children as well. It is important to be clear that liking a child differently is not related to our love for them. We do not love a child more because we like to go fishing with them (rather than a dance recital). Nor do we base our love on which children go to the movies we like. It is not recommended that we tell the children how they rank. Particularly since (in my case anyway) that ranking changes based on whether a child is being difficult on any given day. However, we should be aware of any favoritism we might show. This awareness guides us to make extra effort to find "quality time" with the children that are harder to hang around with.

Our children are similar to us, but not identical. The differences are what make each child a unique blessing. Of course, we can always struggle through activities just to satisfy a child. However, we often will find that "sacrifice" leads us to a greater appreciation for those activities. Our expanding love for our children can often result in expanding our lives as well.

The Blend is the Thing Blended families and finding ways to knit together a family out of people with lifetimes of differences. Also, finding the balance between keeping the past while moving towards the future. I must be honest, blending a family is not for the faint of heart. There are many personalities, problems, and experiences that all feed into the mix. Some of these work great together while some cause friction and turmoil. The key is patience. There are going to be misunderstandings and confusion as everyone gets to know each other. Of course, a long courtship period can help, but there is still way too much to get to know about each other. Just know that there will be struggles, but the end result is greater than the sum of its parts.

We highlight several common concerns/struggles. These include changing roles, a change in the pecking order, and even inside jokes. These are problems that can be overcome and have been experienced by others. Use the experience of others to help you through the challenges that seem overwhelming.

Blame the Referee Refusing to accept responsibility for loss or failure is more likely to lead to more of the same than when we take responsibility for our actions. I call this approach "blame the referee" because I see it so often in sports. A team loses a game and focuses on the arbitrator (right or wrong), something they can not control, instead of how they played, something they can control. A good parent allows a child to fail. They do so while still making sure the child takes responsibility for their actions. Once that step is taken it is important to look for ways to succeed rather than excuses based on others. An important piece of this is to teach your children that failure is not a "bad" thing. It is a part of life and learning. We are not perfect nor do we tend to get things right the first time. When we view failure in the context of the journey, then it opens us up to approaches that the successful often take. Embrace failure as an opportunity to improve rather than a reason for shame. Why We Parent When you raise your children to be the best they can be you will find it is easier to raise them. This is done by focusing on what the strengths and desires of the child are rather than our vision for them. Their happiness and success should be the reason why we parent. It is hard to not assume our likes and desires when raising our kids. However, when we step back and let them follow their own muse something miraculous can happen. We see children grow into people we never expected and, more importantly, they will be happy. When we raise a child to be what we want they are more likely to rebel and push back because we are going against their nature. The easier road is to push them towards their strengths and desires. Simply put, work with their nature to see them blossom.
