I was looking at a number of different quotes about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and began to see this massive set of beliefs that have grown up around her. I imagined her surrounded by this whole scaffold of theology and iconography and ritual, and belief. And at the center of that is a remarkable-yes-but ultimately a very human girl who became a very human mother of the most extraordinary child ever born. Let’s try to strip away the scaffolding today and look at Mary, pregnant with Jesus.
