One of my dad’s favorite sayings was “The grass ain’t always greener on the other side of the fence.” “What’s that mean?” I asked. “That means don’t think you’ll be better someplace else.” I came to realize the grass ain’t always greener on the other side includes being in a different relationship, going a different school, or working a different job. Although regrettably I always didn’t heed the advice, I never forgot it. The expression is also the used in songs. One was the 1986 hit by Earl Thomas Conley, “I Can’t Win for Losing You.” It’s a love song about a man who was finally free from a relationship. He wanted to be free and found that the grass wasn’t greener on the other side. Here’s part of the chorus: "And the grass ain't no greener, here on the other side.” Wednesday’s text is about a man who could have pen the words to the old Country song.
