In John's baptism of Jesus, we see Jesus in his role as Messiah, acting on behalf of the collected people of God. This selfless act leads to Jesus being declared God's beloved. In our own journeys, moments of self realization often follow selfless acts. As we discover our own belovedness, we are constantly challenged to act on behalf of the other.
