Parents who showed up and actually coached, rather than only cheering from the sidelines, taught a different kind of support growing up. Cheering tells someone their effort is appreciated, while coaching points directly at what still needs work. Coaching felt less fun in the moment than pure encouragement, but it built something encouragement alone could not. Adults often give themselves plenty of cheering but very little actual coaching. Naming one honest, specific area that needs attention can do more than encouragement alone ever could.
