High dose flu vaccine reduces the risk of hospitalization by 64% and the risk of death by 49% for older persons. From the University of Copenhagen comes this study of 12,477 participants. Half received the high dose vaccine containing 4 times the dose of each flu antigen. The other half served as controls and received the standard dose vaccine.

Preventing the flu is critical, particularly for older persons. Studies have shown a 6 fold increased risk of heart attack during the week following a positive influenza test.

The time for flu vaccination will soon be upon us. In the US, the high dose flu vaccine is recommended for all those 65 yrs and older as well as for those at higher risk due to medical problems. Ask for high dose when you book your vaccine appointment.
