Generally, our interests are our only interests.
Now, you think to yourself, “not me!” “Prove it!” Let’s start here then, if you are one of the blessed who may have a little bit of extra money left over at the end of the month, what is your first thought for that money?
For me, the first thought is often about something I want for me, and because we invest well in Renovation financially, and sponsor compassion children, and do a number of other things, I can justify it…. easily!
Here is another example to consider—when you get face time with your supervisor, do you promote other people and the great work they have done, hoping they will have advancement opportunities in the organisation or, if we can be honest, is your first thought about how you can display your own value. Of course, it is the latter for most of us, we have been enculturated to think this way, and it is innate to our wiring!
Even when we do good and charitable things, there is often a self-interested motivation, even if it is deep in our subconscious, or not absolutely core to our efforts.
So how do we overcome both wiring and culture, so that we might be people who consider others before and maybe even above ourselves? How do we become truly and identifiably selfless?
Being united with Christ releases us to selflessly regard others as better than ourselves.
