The point is to make both the solution AND the offer superior so it's a clear, obvious, "no-brainer" why a potential client should choose our service over everyone else who does the exact same thing. Do THAT and marketing and sales become almost obsolete -- or at the very least... a helluva lot easier.

A few years back, my wife and I uprooted our entire lives and sold our 2,000-sqft home in Omaha to move to "hillbilly heaven" in southern Missouri and build our version of a "tiny house".A small-ish, 800-sqft home on 3.5 acres.Backed up to a lake deep in the Ozark Mountains. And when I say "we built"...I mean WE built it. My little brother and I did almost everything... from digging the trenches for the water and electrical to building the custom, gabled roof, running the electrical -- all of it except for the siding. That's the one thing I hired a contractor for.Anyway, as you can imagine, it was an intense affair -- especially considering I did it while still managing several freelance clients, running a 6-figure business and homeschooling my kids. And, I quickly learned...All the good-sounding nonsense you get from most of the productivity "experts"... it's cute. It's probably all well and good if you're trying increase your productivity by 10 or 20% -- get a "little extra" done throughout the day. But, on day 115 of 18 hour days...Filled with intense mental work during the day...And even more intense physical work at night. All the fluff and nonsense goes out the window. You get to the brass tacks of what productivity is really all about. And no quaint little "checklist" or "mental exercise" is going to get your a up to go dig that 100-ft trench in the pouring rain. The things that "work" in those moments...Are much, much deeper. They strike at the core of who you are AND what you truly want in life. Had my vision for the 2nd half of my life not been as grand as it is... I don't think we'd have ever finished. It was that grueling.Anyway, this all speaks to what's called "Nature's Quintessential Secret".The secret to nearly limitless productive power. It's like walking around with a secret no one else knows. You see people all around you struggling and suffering in their daily lives -- when you know the answer is so simple. It's right in front of them.In fact, they had it when they were a child. But, lost it somewhere along the way. And, now just refuse to recognize it.People's brains get so warped by all the "rules" we learn from parents, teachers -- hell even a lot of the business "gurus" out there. When the thing that matters most is right there for you to grab hold of -- and change everything in your life.Think of it this way...What's the one universal "rule" every teacher, guru, expert will tell you about achieving success? "Massive action", right? That to get anything you have to act -- and you have to act intensely. "Put in the work", "hustle"... all that. Can you do that if you're constantly dealing with procrastination?Or uncertainty?Doubt, fear, lack of motivation? No. These are all constraints on how productive you can be. And, all the little programs and exercises are just nibbling at the edges. To really cure all of these symptoms, you have to get to the root problem. And that's what "Nature's Quintessential Secret" is all about.Anyway, I know how this all sounds. But, once you see it... like really see it... you'll realize that, if anything, I'm downplaying it. Because I know this sounds like I'm about to tell you aliens from planet Zatar are gonna beam you up to their ship...You just need to drank this poison to "ascend".Haha.In any case, this is the principle underlying Part 1 of my new course, Freelance Feast. It's about figuring out your "quintessential" service. It's maximizing the action you take and what you achieve by breaking through those constraints.Uncovering your "essence" and tying that to a commercially-viable service. It's the only way to maximize your potential.Earn as much as you're capable of...And, more importantly, BE truly happy.Anyway, like I said, it's in Part 1 of my Freelance Feast course. That first part of the course is now up on Skillshare. It's Lesson #3 here: https://myjohn.us/feast.

I got this question from Ryan:"Thanks a lot for your resources online. I just want to hear your insight about job transition from a regular job to freelancing. Which is better? To quit a job and work full time as a web design freelancer/entrepreneur? Or start taking free project first while working on a regular job, and only quit when I already have paid projects? Or at least if you still remember when you started, how long it took before you get paid projects after offering free projects to clients? I’m actually in the stage of job transition and I’m 100% ready for web design. However, I’m hesitant to quit my job because maybe it will take many months or a year before getting paid projects. I know my question is a case to case basis but by hearing your experience and advice will enlighten me a lot! Thank you so much!"It's four things. When I started freelancing, I tried to make the transition to full-time a few times. And, I had a couple false starts. Which are demoralizing. I definitely had my moments of "Should I just give up on this freelance thing?" But, finally, I was able to make the switch and never look back. And, it's been almost 10 years now that I've been full-time from home. What I learned from that are four things you can do to not only make the transition easier and less anxious, but also much more likely you'll make it successfully the FIRST time. I cover those four things in this episode.

Make six figures as a freelancer? Gimme a break. Even just writing that in the subject line makes me want to vomit in my rum and Co-- I mean, coffee. You don't want wanna make six figures. You'll be over-worked and miserable. You have to sell your soul, ruin relationships and kiss your client's feet. Seriously, run away...That's what they say, anyway. It's so weird to me. Everybody wants it, but nobody wants to talk about it or admit it. And, the people who've done it get all sweaty and awkward when it comes up. Why? Anyway, I don't care. I'll say it if nobody else will.I've made six figures freelancing. It wasn't an accident. It didn't just fall out of the sky and I'm "so blessed"... yada, yada, yada.I made it a goal. I came up with a plan. I worked my arse off to attain it. And, it felt good as hell the first time I did it. It didn't make me miserable. I didn't sell my soul or become a graveling "yes man" to my clients. It, frankly, was great. Is that bragging? So, be it.Don't care. It's the truth. Now, the question is how?Okay... simple question for you. How many hours do you need to bill in a year and at what hourly rate... in order to make six figures? If you don't immediately know the answer, then, right now, your 6-figure "goal" really is just a pipe dream. You don't have a plan. And, without a plan, it's not just gonna happen. So, that's the first thing... DO the math. Know your numbers -- what you need to charge and how many hours per week you need to bill. Then, you can focus on building up your clientele and fees to hit those numbers. Having THAT is 90% of the answer to actually getting there (write that down).Next thing is a little does of reality. It doesn't matter what freelance services you offer... there are 1000s of other people who do the exact same thing you do. Why should I hire you over them? Oh, you're "better"? Meh, they all say that. You're cheaper?Meh, this guy over here charges even less. You're more reliable? That's what she says, too.Give me something real. Something tangible. Something that means something to me. Not this vague sales-speak. Every freelancer I talk to says that stuff. What makes you truly unique? What makes you special? Remarkable. You get what I'm driving at here?If six figures is your goal, it's not just gonna happen. You've gotta have a plan and you've gotta have compelling reasons why you're worth it to the clients that are going to get you there. How, do you do that? That's what I cover in this episode of the podcast.

Every client will push try to push the scope of your freelance projects. It's rare to find one that won't. And, if you let them, not only will they walk all over you and take advantage... it can cause a project to fall apart and both sides end up unhappy. So, it's your job to manage scope. Not just for you, but for the client, as well. How?There's four things that you can do... from how you sell your services, through the project and even to months AFTER the project has ended to keep scope (and clients) in check AND generate repeat business. If you do these four things, not only will your "pushy client" problem likely go away, but you're more likely to have existing clients coming to you for repeat business.Anyway, I cover two of the four in this episode.

And, all things you imagined for yourself when you decided to freelance can come true. For me, it was Michael Hyatt. After his project, I had people knocking down my door to hire me. And, I stumbled into creating the right service offering to take advantage of it. I got more work and made more from that one package than anything else in my freelance career. And, the notoriety from it landed my all sorts of other freelance jobs. So, it really can just take getting it right once. And, of course, that's the big problem.HOW do you get it right? The big thing here is NOT to guess. Mainly, because you don't have to. There's all kinds of freely available data that'll help you figure out how to productize your services, how to package them and what features to include, what premiums to offer along with your services and how to price them to maximize your earnings. It's all there. You just have to know where to look. And, that's what I show you in this episode.

This episode is about how to rank in Google for your key freelance search terms. The keywords that will bring you targeted visitors looking to hire someone. Can you imagine what would happen if you ranked #1 for a search term that got 6,600 searches per month and was all people wanting to hire someone right now? That's the idea. And, it breaks down to two steps:1. Create a piece of long-form, cornerstone content designed to rank high for these terms AND pre-sell your services.2. Create shorter supplemental content that links to your cornerstone content and builds up is link value and thus its ranking in Google. That's what every serious SEO and blogger is out there doing right now. But, for us freelancers, it's easier because our search terms are often riddled with blatant ads. So, ranking good content is often a lot easier on these terms.Of course, details matter.WHAT topic should your cornerstone content be about? How should you write it to both rank and pre-sell your services? What should your supplemental content be about? How do you link in a way you don't get Google-slapped?All that. That's what I cover in this episode.

This is the link to learn more about getting free access: https://content2clients.com.Here's the description of the course:When I first started freelancing, I had no idea how to get clients. No plan for how to grow my business. I didn’t know what worked and what didn’t. I took any client I could get, worked on projects I had no passion for, worked with clients I couldn’t stand and was terrified month to month:“Where will the clients come from?”“Will I make enough to pay my bills?”“Will it always be this stressful?”And then, I discovered content marketing. And, I learned how to build a funnel. I figured out what things to say and how to attract high-paying clients. Clients I enjoyed working with, who valued my work and fit my personality. Projects I was excited to work on.I ended up working on projects for Inc. Magazine.Bestselling authors like Tim Ferriss.Lewis Howes. And Michael Hyatt.People I’d never imagined I’d get to work with when I first started. More than that, I finally had a plan and a system. I knew what worked and I knew how to consistently to create content that brought clients in my front door. And, I knew how to scale my business to create the lifestyle I wanted. And, that’s what I’ve done since. So, this class is simple.I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned about using content to get clients. How to write your sales pages, creating your lead magnet, building your landing pages, coming up with content ideas, how to product your content, how and where I re-purpose content to get maximum value out of each post, posting to social media, which platforms to focus on and more. Every step to building your marketing funnel and creating content to get clients. You’ll walk away from the class with:- The exact content marketing funnel blueprint I use- My "Big 3" to ensure my content is always valuable- The dead simple formula I use to guarantee my content is always unique- My "10 Questions" services sales page formula- The 6 components I use in every one of my email optin landing pages- The 5-step process I use to create all my content- How I turn 1 blog post into an entire week's worth of contentThis changed my life. I’m a nobody. A poor kid from a town of 200 who grew up living in a trailer home. If you’d asked my classmates, most would’ve figured I’d be dead or in jail by now. When I started freelancing, I didn’t have a big network to tap into. I didn’t have parents who could help. I didn’t have college friends or a fraternity to leverage. It was just me and my keyboard. So, I can show you how to get started freelancing from absolute scratch.Without a bunch of awkward networking.Without doing a bunch of free work.Without being tied to any one platform or network. And, without having to spend 16 hours a day looking for work, wondering where clients are going to come from and constantly stressed out, worried you’re not going to make it.So, if you’re ready to start strategically growing YOUR freelance business, let’s get started.Link, again, is https://content2clients.com

I've made a lot of mistakes in my 15 years as a freelancer. Some that held me back or kept me limited for years. And while I think, most of the time, that experience is invaluable.Certain mistakes should be avoided at all cost. They're simply too debilitating. And, the only valuable lesson you learn from is "not to do do it". These are those mistakes and what I've learned over the years to avoid them.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a place you could just get all the answers you needed to figure out what your services and your offers should be in order to be irresistible like this? There is.Fiverr.And, in this video, I'm going to show you how to use it to figure out what services you can offer clients and how to build your packages... without guessing what will or won't work.

Back when I was just a freelancing tadpole…I was working a 9-5 at a local pizza joint. I’d spend my days slinging pizza and my nights working on client projects and trying to build my freelance business. I had more than my share of “all-nighters” in those days. So, I can 100% relate to this question I got from Jan:“My problem is that I do not have much time to build my own website and so portfolio or blog as doing lots of clients work while having 9-5 job but I know it is dead important. I think that there a lot of developers stuck like me – doing work for others but lack of time for personal promotion. That would be actually a good topic for a blog post if you will, how to escape clients work and start your own promotion and build an online presence.”This episode is the things I learned to get me over the hump and go freelance full-time.

In this video, I break down my best-performing video from the week. For this email, I think the main reason it performed so well is the subject line. It was enough to pique interest and get people to click through. Then, the quick payoff in the first 2 paragraphs hook people in and got them to actually read the full email.

I was asked to answer this question over on Quora: "Why are people still learning PHP?" Sigh. Why are people still asking why are people still learning PHP?But, one of the answers summed it up perfect.Web development is a lot more regional than you might think. If you live in NYC or Silicon Valley, then sure... most start-ups aren't using PHP to build their app. But, everywhere else?In the freelance world?PHP is still damn dominant. And, absolutely worth learning. In any case, in this podcast episode I go through that answer and give my thoughts on why PHP is still worth learning AND learning as your first server-side language.

Back when I was just a lil' coding padawan, I had a serious case of code-envy. Facebook, when it first came out; WordPress, Drupal, Laravel, there was even this one called Dolphin for social networks. All these amazing applications and frameworks. These coders with their big, beautiful code. And, I'd find myself gazing enviously at them."How in the hell am I ever going to compete with that?"Then, one day, I got contacted randomly by a guy who asked me to build him a unique kind of e-commerce site. Something none of the big shopping cart applications of the time could do.And so, I built it.And, he was happy. And, it was all kinda weird.I didn't think it was possible, but it was. And, I realized I didn't HAVE to compete with those guys. Not like I had been thinking, anyway. Those guys had spent years getting to the point that they could code those applications. And, along the way, they'd probably built dozens of smaller applications just like the one I did...For smaller, lesser-known clients or projects. And, built their way up.All I really had to do was get started and keep moving. And, not let my fear of another man's code keep me impotent.Fast-forward a few years and here I was building membership sites for famous people like Michael Hyatt, Lewis Howes, Tim Ferriss and Inc. Magazine. And, I'd imagine there were a few coders gazing passionately at my... ahem... code, now.Point is...It's easy to get overwhelmed when you first start out.You see all those developers doing all these amazing things.Technology changing and evolving so quickly. And, you can start to wonder, "how the hell will I ever keep up?" But, the truth is, once you get past this initial learning curve, it's actually not near as hard as you might think. And before you know it...YOU will be the one other developers are "gazing" at.Just gotta keep your head down. And, grind through it.In any case, that's where I come in. I help you get through that initial learning curve faster and with a helluva lot less frustration and misstepping. And, my entire curriculum to do that is available over on SkillShare...Where you can get started for nothing.Just go here to start your 2-month no-cost trial: https://www.skillshare.com/r/user/johnmorrisTake all my coding and freelancing courses.Cancel anytime before the 2 months is up and never pay a penny. Not an easier way to get going in my not-so-humble opinion. But, do what you want.Link is here: https://www.skillshare.com/r/user/johnmorrisLater,John

Got this from Rik:"The only thing that ever got my fire burning was a math teacher who off-line explained me this new thing called machine language... This was in 1983. Then I did what I was "supposed" to do, Industrial Engineering, (major in CAD/CAM) then MBA with focus on Information Management. Then a bunch of jobs as Management Consultant. In the mean time I kept learning how to do cool stuff with Basic, Lotus123 macros, then dbase4 then msaccess-vba, MySQL, and then PHP! So now 90% of my billable hours are for programming dynamic sites for companies. And they pay me! And I have so much to learn still... The point I am trying to make is, here I spent large part of capital on s!@# I never use. The programming I do is completely self taught."What else is there to say?I hear all these dingbats who love to drone on and on about how "necessary" a degree is when it comes to web development. Justifying all the benjamins they wasted. Truth this, you don't need it.Not really. If you WANT it, hey...More power to you.Nothing wrong with that. But, don't fool yourself. You don't NEED it.Roll up your sleeves and put in the work. That's it.Anyhoo, I've got a web design and development curriculum waiting for you that'll cost you nothing to start. In school, I was called a loser and told I'd never have any kind of success in life. When I first said I was going to make a living on the internet, everyone I told laughed at me. When I said, I wanted to learn how to code, they said, "No way".Yet, all those things HAVE happened and more. It's a curious thing. The more someone tells you that you can't do something, the more likely you are to do it. So much so, I actually WANT people to tell me I can't do something. It gives me the motivation I need to prove them wrong. My guess is you have your doubters, too.People who laughed when you told them you were getting into this.People who are just waiting for you to fail so they can say, "I told you so".And, while you probably know you're supposed to ignore it and keep moving forward, anyway... still, all the pressure and doubt can feel like a knife being stabbed into your temple, at times.Good.I say DON'T ignore it.Wallow in it.Remember it.Every last word.Every snicker. All of it.And, then imagine how sweet it's going to feel when every one of these people is proved so stupendously wrong they'll have no choice but to admit it. And, THEY'LL be the ones looking like an idiot. And then, get to work! And when you're ready, I'm here to help. Was watching this video from Clever Programmer called, "Why Are the Best Coders Broke?" It's about these coders he knows who've been coding for 20-30 years and are only charge 30/hr.Then, this other guy he knows...Who's been at it for just a couple years...And, charges 150/hr.So, what gives? It's what I always tell you. The freelance world is 100% different than the "tech job" world. That's why you really shouldn't take freelance advice from developers who've never actually freelanced (shocker, I know). They just don't get it.At the end of day, clients don't care. You could've been coding 1000 years...Don't matter. Can you deliver? That's the bottom line.NOW... it works the other way, too. Clients also don't really care if you've been coding for 30 days. Again, can you deliver? If you can... and you can demonstrate that in your marketing... Bob's your uncle! You're set. That should get you excited.Because, you can get rolling with this as fast as you want to.Just gotta buckle down, learn the tech...And then, GO FOR IT!Anyway, that's where your favorite ranty uncle (that's me) can help. I've the coding training you need. But, also, the Upwork course that'll show you how to turn those coding skills into a paycheck. And, teach you how to demonstrate your skills in your marketing. And, you can get it all for nada on SkillShare.Just start the 2-month, no-cost trial here: https://www.skillshare.com/r/user/johnmorrisTake all my courses (especially Upwork 101).Cancel anytime before the 2 month is up.And, you're all set.Why not give it a try?See ya over there,John

This is the first installment of a 4-part tutorial series I'm doing, Freelancing 101: A Dead Simple Method to Get Your First Freelance Work. In this series, I'm walking you through the exact process I used to get my first freelance clients. The nice thing about this method is you get to start slow and simple, get your feet wet and grow at your own pace. Instead of trying to land and then deliver on $3,ooo or $5,ooo or $15,000 projects right off the bat. That can be scary as hell. What I'm going to show you isn't. Yet, you can still make damn good money doing it.But, with that said, lets jump into Part 1: How to Find Problems People Will Pay You to Solve. And, the key here is finding urgent problems you can solve for clients. The more urgent the problem, the easier it will be to get clients. I got this YouTube comment from Raul:"I cant thank you enough for this video. I've been a long time listener for your show on and off for around 3 years now, and I've been learning web development during that time. Back then It was struggle just to get to grips with CSS let alone JS or PHP, but I've always loved the idea of being a freelancer and I watched a lot of your early videos that gave basic principal tips on freelancing that I should have been applying . I've spent hundreds of dollars on online courses over the years because I fell into a shiny object [syndrome] and I became convinced that "If i buy just one more course" then I'll be good to go. I never touched most of those courses. I got to the point where I burned myself out trying to learn a lot of things that really had no relevance to what I should have been learning which was my full stack. As a result I had to take a year break from coding just to see if my efforts in a different field would work out better for me. Things didn't work out there, but at the beginning of this year I saw your is php dead video and that video gave me the jump start I needed to get back into coding. I already had rob Percivals web dev course so I told myself F*** it let me give this course a shot, but I knew I had to do things different this time so now I'm doing my best to apply the "slow is smooth smooth is fast" approach you described to coding and its been night and day. Now im in the PHP section and while its by no means easy, it doesn't feel as hard as it did years ago. Thank you for all that you do John, I would not be where I am now without your videos."This is my response.Show notes: https://www.johnmorrisshow.com/317Support the show: https://www.johnmorrisonline.com/patreonFree tutorials: https://johnsfreetuts.com

I got this response from Sir Joelsuf on EP314 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQCjYAn5wMs):"I would actually say that might put someone at a disadvantage, especially since the temptation of giving up location independent income for returning to the 9-5 is really REALLY great. If you are committed to something like running your own business, I say that things will improve way quicker if you just burn the boats, quit that 9-5 and just get obsessed with it.""Freelancing/self employment is a lifestyle change not just a career change and that is why most just abandon it and go back to the 9-5 after a year or so instead of taking the 2-3 years of full dedication to actually become established. They aren't patient or mentally tough enough."This is my response.Show notes: https://www.johnmorrisshow.com/316Support on Patreon: https://www.johnmorrisonline.com/patreonFree tutorials at: https://johnsfreetuts.com

This is one of the things I hated about Upwork when I first got on... clients (and freelancers) who would constantly lowball every job. Then, the perfect storm hit and I came across a client and a project I KNEW was making a big mistake. And, I told them so. Then, after some back and forth, they actually hired me AND at my (higher) rate. Since then, I've developed what I did that day into a simple five-step plan for getting lowball clients to raise their rates (or ignore all the freelancers underbidding their project). One of the big downsides of freelancing is getting consistent, stable income. One month, you can be up to your eyeballs with work and the next... nothing. And, it can be scary as hell to bounce from month to month like that. One way to deal with that is to get hired on retainer by your clients. Now, for a lot of developers that sounds like a pipe dream. It certainly did to me.Then, I pitched my first client on the idea. And, it was a lot easier than I imagined. Over the years, now, I've had several clients hire me on retainer and there's a set process for making this pitch. So, in this episode, I'm going to step you through that process so you can start moving more of your clients into hiring you on retainer and generate more consistent and stable income.Show notes: https://www.johnmorrisshow.com/299Support the show on Patreon: https://www.johnmorrisonline.com/patreonUpwork 101: https://www.upwork101.com

Got this from Douglas:"Another excellent video. It's nice how you share so many important aspects of being a programmer that don't directly relate to the actual process of writing code. It brings a "fullness" to what you provide as an instructor. I've been feeling somewhat burned-out lately; but not for the reasons you've discussed here. I am more of an intermediate-level programmer who is still attempting to develop the skills I think necessary to be able to make web development an actual career. I've done much of the introductory work in learning the constructs of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, etc via many courses that I've taken, both in school and on-line. I've worked through numerous problems and case-studies successfully through this instruction. But what I haven't learned yet is how to actually solve new problems I may be faced with. I suppose I haven't yet learned how to think like a real programmer; how to analyze a problem, dissect it, lay out the steps necessary to solve it, and then write the code to do so. In short, I'm pretty good at regurgitating code but not too good using what I know to solve new problems that I haven't previously encountered. I love coding but I'm questioning whether or not I have what it takes to bring together useful projects I may be tasked to do. And, if I can't, what I'm doing is mostly just a mental exercise instead of a path to actually making a living. How did you progress from the "learning" stage to the problem-solving stage?"Answer in this episode.Show notes: https://www.johnmorrisshow.com/296Udemy promotion link: https://www.johnmorrisonline.com/march

They don't believe you. It's simple. The more they believe you, the more influence you have over them, the more you get what you deserve. Clients, co-workers, potential employers, friends, family...Doesn't matter.Believability leads to influence.Influence leads to power.Power leads to getting what you want. This is how to make it almost impossible for others not to believe everything you say and do. To get hired, a potential client first has to trust you. You will NOT get hired on Upwork or anywhere else until you've established, at least, a basic level of trust. The common advice you'll get to do that is that you have to "build rapport". This is all true. But, often, you'll never get told exactly how to do build rapport. One effective method is what I call "Overt Transparency". I learned this selling cars. Not from my mentors in that industry, mind you. But, by going against what they said, getting myself in a bunch of trouble and remembering that it's the client who rules the day... not my snobby sales manager.Anyway, I show what it is and how to implement in in your freelancing in this episode.Show notes: https://www.johnmorrisshow.com/289Upwork 101: http://www.upwork101.com

A lot of developers want to create a startup or work for a startup... or work for a startup then start a startup. You get the point... startups are often viewed as the "golden ticket".But, I try to provide little sobriety...Because... numbers vary... but, 60-90% of startups fail. There's nothing worse than investing all your time and energy into something, banking on it being your future and then it falls out from underneath you.Sure, it can be an adventure. But, some of you have families. You can't afford an adventure. And, you still have to put a roof over your head and food in your belly. This is a pretty common question I get. It's probably a lot less than you think or the snobs and know-it-alls out there will tell you. Of course, the phrase "be a WordPress developer" is pretty subjective. So, I'm going to tackle "how much PHP do you need to know to build a WordPress plugin". Because, generally, if you know enough PHP to build a plugin... you can probably build a theme. And, it's a little bit more objective. Nobody will benefit much from this. Imagine if you were talking about sources where clients are desperate for certain kind of code, and what freelancers need to know, before being able to do it. If you are talking about freelance places like Upwork, very often programmers will bid much, much lower than $25."This is what I call the "simplicity trap" and it can be quite insidious. Got this from Kirk:"So far I have gone through the first 2 tutorials in the 1st module and I can say it is making it so much clearer to understand. I have spent many mind numbing hours looking for an understanding of this stuff… All the other stuff I have read about php and html and css, and javascript, and mysql, and so on and so forth have left me not knowing or understanding how to put it all together. This brought me to frustration… Heck even the codecademy never really explained it. They just have you regurgitate what to type until you get it right, but never really explain why you are doing it as clear as you do… Thank you for this site and training. I remember what it's like. When I first started freelancing, I had no clue what to write on my profiles and services page. What was I supposed to say? What questions did clients need answered? Was there some big secret? In an earlier LinkedIn post, 5 Pages Every Web Designer Should Have on Their Website, I mentioned the 10 questions you need to answer on your profiles and services pages (and I'm still shocked to this day how well this works).Let me now go deeper into the full 12-Step Freelance Profile Template I use, cover the ten questions your clients need answered, and share the tricks I've learned for answering them in a compelling way so you can get clients to say YES to hiring you. How do you write job proposals on Elance, oDesk and Freelancer.com that get you hired? In this podcast, I cover the 5-step formula I used to immediately stand out and make it almost impossible for a client to say no.Plus, the one thing you should NEVER doing when write a job proposal because it will instantly turn clients off and get your proposal throw in the "rejected" pile.Take the survey here:http://johnmorrisonline.com/elanceTraining Center:http://goo.gl/4788A3Subscribe on YouTube:http://youtube.com/johnmorrisonlineSubscribe on SoundCloud:http://soundcloud.com/johnmorrisonlineSubscribe on iTunes:http://goo.gl/RggnXW

Here's the question:"Hi John. Here is the question. I'm the one in charge of making the proposals at Freelancer, Elance and oDesk for a really small company (we are 5 developers, and I'm the salesperson). There are two things that scare me the most: my english level/accent and my ignorance on the matter (coding, I only know, for example, what PhoneGap does but I don't know how). Can you give me some suggestions? I receive feedback, but I can't manage to stay with me! Thanks for your help. BTW, your podcasts are excellent. Keep on the good work!"Training Center:http://goo.gl/4788A3Subscribe on YouTube:http://youtube.com/johnmorrisonlineSubscribe on SoundCloud:http://soundcloud.com/johnmorrisonlineSubscribe on iTunes:http://goo.gl/RggnXW

Here's the question:"Is it really worth trying Elance and Freelancer.com? I am a web developer from Australia. I joined Elance few months ago and Freelancer.com a week ago. I have been trying Elance for months and have been totally unsuccessful at winning bids.""There are a few things I have noticed. I am always competing against the cheap rates from India and other countries that I find it impossible to beat. There are people placing bids with $10/hr and clients wanting high-quality professional websites for under $500, which I find absolutely impossible to deliver. There are higher budget ads as well but I think majority of the projects have very low budget. Is Elance really only good for people from countries that can work on lower rate? How can I improve my chances of winning a bid?"Here's the question on Quora:http://www.quora.com/Is-it-really-worth-trying-Elance-and-Freelancer-comSubscribe on YouTube:http://youtube.com/johnmorrisonlineSubscribe on iTunes:http://goo.gl/RggnXW

You can see this level displayed on the side of your profile. This level is important because it plays a major role in how you show up in profile listings throughout Elance. In general, the higher your level the more likely you are to show up at the top of those lists and get seen by potential clients. However, there is an equally important ranking factor that I see many new and even advanced freelancers miss…Listen to this episode to learn what it is.

Some clients just suck. There’s really no nice way to put it. Learning how to expose and avoid them BEFORE you let them hire you will keep you from tearing your hair out (and stave off the gray hair for just a few more years).Of course, it’s fun to joke about it… but dealing with hellish clients is actually serious as… well hell! That’s because getting good at avoiding clients who just don’t fit well with your personality and how you operate will help you avoid getting seriously burnt out and overwhelmed. And, it’ll keep you loving your job which will make you happier (and helps you make more money).
