Yin Yin was born and raised in a traditional Chinese family in the South of China, where traditional herbs were an integral part of her family’s health and well-being. At the age of 13 the family moved to Hong Kong. Several years later they migrated to the United States, where Yin Yin pursued her degree in Mechanical Engineering at San Francisco State University. For more than 10 years, she built a professional career in energy efficiency and sustainability.

“Greenwashing” products were the motivation for Yin Yin to create organic skin care. Back in 2015 she came across a moisturizer that was marketed as a natural product. After using the moisturizer for about a month, she noticed her skin became dryer and more sensitive. Yin Yin researched the ingredient list and found out that many ingredients were, for the most part, petrochemicals and highly irritating preservatives. In some ways, finding this out made her feel cheated and upset. At that moment she set up her goal to create an authentic natural skin care brand.

Yin Yin doesn’t have a chemistry degree, but she learned skin care formulation in a very practical way by researching and studying natural ingredients. Fortunately a lot of what her grandmother and mother taught her about herbs I was able to apply it to better understand and select the ingredients in her formulations. Yin Yin took various natural skin care formulation courses, as well as the Skin Care Ingredients for Cosmetic Professionals course at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

EPISODE 3: Safe Makeup Project: An interview with Annie Gabillet Annie is a former editor at PopSugar. She is now a Mom, a journalist (she has interviewed Michelle Obama!) and the creator of Safe Makeup Project website. In this episode, Annie talks about her journey into Clean Beauty and how, while at PopSugar, she worked on a 90 day “beauty cleanse” project complete with interviews with beauty industry experts and representatives from the FDA. What she learned affected her deeply. She made some immediate changes in her beauty routine and felt a profound responsibility to educate the public and decided to launch the Safe Makeup Project website. In 2016, while pregnant, she learned that certain products used by an expectant mother can affect her child later in life (allergies, skin conditions). Her drive for more Clean Beauty education strengthened and her goal for this site, is for it to become not only a trusted and educational resource, but a Clean Beauty community. The Safe Makeup Project (launching soon) will be a site for trusted sources, what products are safe, what products work, where to buy – whether in a drug or department store. She will cover topics like the difference between green, organic, natural and clean products, what ingredients are trending and how effective they are – or aren’t. Avene Thermal Spring Water (1 on EWG): give yourself a spritz of this before you leave the house or in the middle of a long day to soothe, soften, and calm your skin. It might just be water, but beauty professionals swear by this.

Derma-E sunscreen: Gets a 1 on EWG, meaning it includes safe ingredients.

White film rubs away easily. Plays nice with makeup, including liquid foundation. Very lightweight. Not greasy, but also doesn’t leave skin dry. Can use body sunscreen on the face as well, meaning you just need one product (the only difference in ingredients between body and face products is that the body version includes sunflower seed oil). Effective at preventing sunburn.

RMS Beauty Luminizer X Quad: This combo includes RMS’s cult-classic Living Luminizer, as well as three other shades. The Champagne Rosé shade is one of my favorites. I put it on my cheeks and my eyes and feel subtly glamorous, if that’s even possible. (1 on EWG) RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer: If you have fair skin, this cream bronzer will make you look like you just spent a few hours by the pool, and you don’t have to risk the sun damage. For darker complexions it will probably perform more like a highlighter. Buriti oil can nourish the skin and make it supple, and the bronzer blends in smoothly. While it looks sparkly in the pot, it has no glitter to it when applied. (1 from EWG)

Lily Lolo’s mascara adds both length and thickness. It gives that dramatic pop I need to finish my look. The brush gets a lot of product on it, making it a little messy to apply. But I like that you can add more coats to build up the effect. It did not fall down under my eyes during the day.

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum FoundationThis liquid foundation penetrates the skin nicely and creates a silky texture. The coverage is light to medium, but it did diminish the dark spots I have on my cheeks.

It’s a story that pulls the audience in on a very personal topic—the desire to be attractive and the lure of products that promise to deliver on those objectives.

The film takes the audience on a journey of discovery, bringing clarity to widespread confusion about ingredients, marketing gimmicks, and even greenwashing. It not only reveals the health risks at stake for women, but offers examples of safer products they can use to avoid common chemicals of concern. It also examines new legislation, what the FDA can—and cannot do—and the effects these chemicals can have on the environment and our precious world.

Jennifer is known for her award-winning movie directing and screenwriting. She’s has worked with major studios like Universal Pictures as a tagline writer and movie marketing professional on films like The Wolfman, Robin Hood, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Fast and Furious, Little Fockers, Larry Crowne, and many more!

She also wrote, directed and produced, Mary Loss of Soul, which was awarded Best Director and Best Feature Film at Boston International Film Festival in 2014, and was nominated for Best Feature Film at Palm Beach International Film Festival.

This episode is a brief solo introduction to meet me (your host) Cassandra McClure. I’ve worked as a professional makeup artist for over 10 years but have been obsessed with beauty products long before I was a teen. Over time my body began rejecting the lotions and potions I applied by breaking out into rashes, hives and itchy red bumps.
