There is no New York City public official better suited to the spectacle of food -- whom the citizenry wants to see eating -- than Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

This is not simply an issue of body type, although that certainly factors in. The fact is, Marty exudes a certain jocularity, a game-ness that's very old-school. Have a baby that needs to be held? Give it to Marty! Have a catchphrase that bears repeating, such as "Fuhgeddaboutit!"? Marty'll say it!

Where other politicians tend to perform with a wink, at best, Marty goes all the way. When he's at Junior's, you really, truly believe he couldn't live without that cheesecake.

But until the blog "Marty Markowitz Eating" came along, most of us didn't realize how much cheesecake he was eating. Or latkes, or pizza, or red-velvet cupcakes.

The site appears to have a mission:

"Borough President Marty Markowitz likes to eat things. He regularly attends press conferences based solely around food, has a couple sandwiches in the borough named after him, and makes a food joke in just about every single one of his speeches. He likes to eat, and he should be documented doing so. This is that site."

So, do the pictures speak to the truth? According to photographer Seth Kushner, who snapped this picture of Marty at Juniors, "Marty is a true restaurateur. Though the slice of cheesecake was meant as a prop, he did take it to go. He's famously dieted and lost weight since the photo was taken, but I'm sure he's no less exuberant about his Brooklyn food!"
