First Responder Coaches are people trained to be on the front line of others' crises and respond to them in such a manner that ensures a healthy state of being.
The three lines of defense to ensure all know to protect self and others from risking mental health.
Recognize the numbers of people who are at risk of being "fragile" a those who are suicidal. When the word "FRAGILE" appears on a box, all know to handle with care. If something is send that is fragile and it is ignored and not labeled, then the item is broken because the box was not labeled. If people genuinely understood when they are fragile, they would know a system they need to "handle with care". The numbers drives change. The numbers of people dying from car accidents was excessive. People accepted these numbers and laws changed requiring manufacturers to include seat belts and airbags and people to wear seat belts. Over 255,000 lives have been saved since 1075. When people know the numbers of people who are fragile and suicidal, action will be taken!
Protect Yourself - Because the numbers show that all people will experience major depression, trauma, or anxiety, then why not be prepared? We are prepared for an accident by wearing seat belts. We can prepare for these moments by wearing an "emotional seat belt: of a Personal Wellness Plan. All parents will know to discuss this plan and the reality of suicide for age-appropriate family members just as all parents discuss stranger danger, drugs, sex, etc. Lastly, all parents need to know how to "suicide proof" their home. 90% of suicides occur at home. 50%involve guns. All guns should have locks in them and ammunition kept separately. Meds are locked up; ropes are put up.
Protect Others - Because there are over 48,000 who die a year to suicide a year, 132 a day. Over 36,000 consider suicide every day, over 3200make an attempt and show up in the emergency room a day (1.1 million a year). There needs to be a network of people who are trained to recognize and respond to people who are fragile so they do not become suicidal. The American Heart Association realized the numbers of people who die from heart attacks were unacceptable. They train 22 million people a year in CPR to recognize people who are having heart attacks and respond with CPR. Over 46% deaths from heart attacks have been prevented. So, why not train First Responder Coaches in the skill to recognize and respond to friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, etc. who might be fragile and respond with confidence with the skill? To confidently respond to "fragile" , it helps to find the "source of the fire": Depression as measured by the Pfizer Health Questionnaire, Childhood Trauma as measured by Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Test, Adult Stress as measured by Rahe and Holmes Stress Scale.
