In this episode featuring General Jim Dubik, we discuss Just War Reconsidered - a new framework for waging just wars. We begin with a brief overview of Michael Walzer’s enduring Just War theory as it involves jus ad bellum, jus in bello, and jus post bellum. In his book, Dubik uses Walzer’s Just War theory as its foundation, but argues that Walzer’s terms for jus in bello are incomplete; that a full practical morality must recognize the moral responsibilities of senior political and military leaders. As such, we discuss everything from civil-military relations, Clausewitz and Sun Tzu, the ethics of drone strikes, when and where just cyberattacks come into play, Dubik’s position on metaethics, and more. We conclude with Dubik's final addendum to Walzer's jus in bello, where he lays out Five War-Waging Principles.
