Leaving Neverland (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Chad Hobson's diverse talents as a composer and performer have prompted collaborations with many prestigious figures in the film industry. He arranged and played Asian ethnic instruments, supported by a full orchestra, for James McTeigue and the Wachowskis' Ninja Assassin. He also provided vocals and choral arrangements for the classically scored The Young Victoria, produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Emily Blunt. Some of his recent projects include two-time BAFTA and Grierson award-winning The Paedophille Hunter directed by Dan Reed, the BBC's BAFTA award-winning series Our War, and the powerful drama A Song For Jenny, directed by Brian Percival and starring Emily Watson. He also wrote the original score for the controversial HBO documentary, LEAVING NEVERLAND.

Leaving Neverland is a two-part documentary exploring the separate but parallel experiences of two young boys, James Safechuck, at age 10, and Wade Robson, at age 7, both of whom were befriended by Michael Jackson. Through gut-wrenching interviews with Safechuck, now 40, and Robson, now 36, as well as members of their family, the film crafts a portrait of sustained abuse, exploring the complicated feelings that led both men to confront their experiences after both had children of their own. Produced and directed by Dan Reed, the documentary recently had its world premiere in the Special Events section at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

In this episode, Chad Hobson reveals how he looked to show a "magical quality" of the two victims and their fateful meeting of Michael Jackson and the over-arching metaphor he used to service as a guide for the tone of his score. Hobson discusses the challenge, choices and goals of writing an actual theme to represent the "abuse," but, at last, why he didn't write a theme for Michael Jackson.
