UPS Systems Overview- Chapter 28 of the NFPA 70B
28.1 Introduction. The basic function of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems is to preserve power to electrical or electronic equipment. Most UPS systems are intended to provide regulated power to prevent power supply fluctuations or aberrations that can damage or cause malfunction of sensitive electrical/electronic equipment, such as computers and process controllers. A UPS system represents a sizable investment in equipment specifically installed to provide reliable regulated power to equipment. Therefore, it is essential that the UPS system be maintained in a manner that the UPS itself will not fail.

We continue our deep dive into Article 120.2 of the NFPA 70E which focuses on Lockout/ Tagout Principles.
General. Electrical conductors and circuit parts shall not be considered to be in an electrically safe work condition until all of the requirements of Article 120 have been met. Safe work practices applicable to the circuit voltage and energy level shall be used in accordance with Article 130 until such time that electrical conductors and circuit parts are in an electrically safe work condition.

We are continuing to look at chapter 9 of the NFPA 70B today which focuses on Electrical System Studies. Yesterday (in episode 37) we talked about the first 2 kinds of studies listed in chapter 9- short circuit studies, and coordination studies.
Today we will focus on the other 3 types of studies that chapter 9 talks about-
Load Flow Studies Reliability Studies Risk Assessment Studies
Now it’s important to understand that all the studies listed in chapter 9 are as the NFPA states “an integral part of system design, operations, and maintenance.” And remember- copies of each type of study, along with the single line diagrams for the electrical system should be turned over to the facility maintenance department in an effort for them to operate a safe, efficient, and reliable electrical system. Chapter 6.4- Establishment of a Systematic Program
“6.4 Establishment of a Systematic Program. The purpose of any inspection and testing program is to establish the condition of equipment to determine what work should be done and to verify that it will continue to function until the next scheduled servicing occurs. Inspection and testing are best done in conjunction with routine maintenance. In this way, many minor items that require no special tools, training, or equipment can be corrected as they are found. Chapter 6.3.1.- Identification of Critical Equipment reads- “Equipment (electric or otherwise) should be considered critical if its failure to operate normally and under complete control will cause a serious threat to people, property, or the product. Electric power, like process steam, water, and so forth, might be essential to the operation of a machine, but unless loss of one or more of these supplies causes the machine to become hazardous to people, property, or production, that machine might not be critical. The combined knowledge and experience of several people might be needed to make this determination. In a small facility, the facility engineer or master mechanic working with the operating superintendent should be able to make this determination.”

Here are a few facts: 1 milliamp- A faint tingle. 5 milliamps- Slight shock felt; disturbing, not painful. Average individual can let go. Involuntary reactions can lead to injury. 6-30 milliamps- Painful shock; muscular control lost. The point where it is difficult, or impossible, to let go. 50-150 milliamps- Extreme pain; respiratory arrest; severe muscular contractions; cannot let go; possible death.

We continue our deep dice into Chapter 6 of the NFPA 70B and talk specifically about- Chapter 6.2.1.3 “The third step should be the assembling of all documentation. This might necessitate a search of desks, cabinets, computers, and such, and might also require that manufacturers be contacted, to replace lost documents. All of the documents should be centralized, controlled, and maintained. The documentation should include recommended practices and procedures for some or all of the following: (1) Installation (2) Disassembly/assembly (interconnections) (3) Wiring diagrams, schematics, bills of materials (4) Operation (set-up and adjustment) (5) Maintenance (including parts list and recommended spares) (6) Software program (if applicable) (7) Troubleshooting

Chapter 5 of the NFPA 70B talks about the 7 essential components that make up an effective maintenance program. They are: 1. Responsible and qualified personnel 2. Regularly scheduled inspections, testing, and servicing of equipment. 3. Survey and analysis of electrical equipment and systems to determine maintenance requirements and priorities. 4. Programmed routine inspections and suitable tests 5. Accurate analysis of inspection and test reports so that proper corrective measures can be prescribed 6. Performance of necessary work 7. Concise but complete records
