And it's the Saturday edition of Finding the Funny, which means I'll be giving you a tip to find the funny yourself! I've written for everyone from the Tonight Show to hundreds of radio stations. I now travel the country showing organizations how to use humor in business.
Today's 60 second tip. . . Use your sarcastic voice. Sarcasm and comedy tend to go hand in hand, and that's fine. . . as long as you're nice about it! Because using a little sarcasm is a quick way to find the humor in a situation. And how do you find your sarcastic voice? Well, one way comedians do it is . . . we put ourselves in the other person's shoes, and say what their sarcastic voice is thinking.
We all have a sarcastic voice in our heads right? Not just comedians. The first time you were ever disciplined by mom and dad, you probably had a comeback . . you just didn't say it because you wanted to live! But now you can say what people are sarcastically thinking. I've used this method on several occasions, when I've had to get on stage after something weird has happened, and I can't go right into my act. Like the joke at the beginning of this briefing – I was wondering what were these people thinking? Listen to my joke tomorrow too, where I use this method when I had to go on stage after the group gave out 292 service pins. I put myself in the audiences shoes and I said what their sarcastic voice was thinking.
