Join us as we explore the theme of wisdom through a look at the artsy truths of Ecclesiastes. The lens of Christian morality shows us things in "black and white". Nevertheless, you've likely found by living your life in pursuit of Christ that life happens when we can see the gray areas and live there, not as some muddled understanding of morality (which is still black and white), but with the inclusion of God's saving GRACE that sustains us. Without it, without Jesus, we're lost, unsaved, and naive.

Every once in a while, scripture gets set to music in a way that's memorable with a little help from who sings it or how popular they are, but most importantly for the words they sing. Ecclesiastes 3 provided many musicians with the opportunity to spread more of the wisdom of the Bible to countless people. But what about now? When times are uncertain, are we willing to rest in the knowledge that this book of wisdom is exactly that...a God-breathed encouragement that sometimes, life is great, and sometimes, it's just plain crazy. The brokenness of the world, perhaps most clear today in this current pandemic of COVID-19, is neither a surprise nor illogical to us as Christ followers. However, it can be tempting to let our hearts be invaded by panic, anxiety, and fear in the face of a spreading, dangerous virus. We can cling to the comfort and wisdom God gives us all throughout the Bible, and to the sage reminders in Ecclesiastes this week in particular: as we seek to be people of peace to one another, we understand there will be ups and downs, ebbs and flows, "a time for every matter under heaven" (Eccles 3:1b). How we live that out shows much more about our relationship with God and our understanding of the principles in Ecclesiastes than we might like to admit. Whether you think you're in a good or bad one, this is a season and it will change. After all, God is sovereign over all of it. So will you face it with fear or FAITH? Come join us at 9:09 & 11:11am. #UnderTheSun

We settle into Ecclesiastes this week, having just heard the first of many frustrations of King Solomon. We can be thankful that he has much wisdom to share, not just lament that the world isn't what it seems. Solomon speaks from experience, not just philosophical conjecture. It is through his life, at times poorly and/or well-lived, that we can gain helpful perspective on not only our own mistakes, but also on our overall outlook on our short time here on earth and our eternal life with Christ. That's why the opening lines are attention-grabbing and a little dismaying. Reading Solomon's "wisdom" that "everything is meaningless" is perhaps not what you'd expect to read in the Bible. However, it's not meant to be as confusing as it sounds. Walk with us through the logical progression of coping with a life on earth--"under the sun"--that's actually only the beginning. Once we apply an eternal perspective, everything changes. Come join us at https://www.patreon.com/user/posts?u=32437484 (or search for The Shieldwall Podcast)

Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast! This week we have a guest sermon from Ethan's home church, [OV] Church.

It's time for our new series through the book of Ecclesiastes! Join us as we explore the theme of wisdom through a look at the artsy truths of Ecclesiastes. The lens of Christian morality shows us things in "black and white". Nevertheless, you've likely found by living your life in pursuit of Christ that life happens when we can see the gray areas and live there, not as some muddled understanding of morality (which is still black and white, stark, clearly defined), but with the inclusion of God's saving GRACE that sustains us. Without it, without Jesus, we're lost, unsaved, and naive. Bring your virtual paintbrush on Sunday as we discuss wisdom and art from a Christian worldview.

WELCOME BACK TO THE PODCAST BUNKER! Who is building the church? In the midst of the chaos and confusion. The order and tradition. The shameful and shameless. The pure and the true. The truth and the error. Generation after generation, church schism, statism, deformation, reformation, denomination, convention, speratatism, independentism, networking; the question we hope to answer tonight is what keeps the church working?

Foundational thought: So, who is building the church?

Traditions? Creeds and Confessions? Church Governments? Programs? Big Eva?!?

None of these are “building the church” in the way that Christ affirms. These are all ways and means that the church has historically sustained itself in a practical way. And God does providentially use these means of grace. We would argue that in spite of man's best efforts the Lord remains the builder of His Church.

From one living stone to another living stone, the church in every generation continues to confess the same rock solid truth that Peter confessed in Matt 16: 16, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, He is our Chief Cornerstone.

Paul would go on to add that everyone who confesses that Jesus is the Christ..are

Ephesians 2:19–21 (NASB95): “... are … no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone,in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord…”

The writer of Hebrews urges the faithful to remain in fellowship and have confidence:

Hebrews: 19-25, (NASB95):19 “Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”

The Common Thread is Christ is the Cornerstone, the Chief Cornerstone that everyone within the church is built upon. Christ is building a Christ-Center Church upon Himself, for Himself and that looks like Himself all by the promise of the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit, by way of the finished work of Christ Alone.

So what is the purpuse of the church and why is Christ building it?

Here are a few areas we'd like to focus on:

Christ is building...

A church who loves God A church who loves Christ A church who loves the Word A church who loves the body A church who loves good deeds A church who await eagerly the blessed hope

Each of these passages addresses the above point. Let's read them and explain how Christ is making us into His image.

Luke 4:8 John 14:15 1 John 2:15; 5:3 Gal 5:22-23 Ps 40:8; 42:1 1 Peter 1:22 Eph 5:25 Titus 2:14 Titus 2:12-13 Revelation 22:17

Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast! Today we begin a multi-part series on apologetics called Apologetics at the Cross. We will be going through Apologetics at the Cross: An Introduction for Christian Witness by by Joshua D. Chatraw and Mark D. Allen. Today Ethan gives a presentation on different apologetic methodologies in Scripture. Even though we live in a very different age than when scripture was written and we operate under different plausibility structures (see part 1), the methods we see demonstrated in Scripture are still important to know because many of them can be adapted for our modern context. Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast! Ethan is back in the Podcast Bunker bringing you a sermon by the Prince of Peachers, the cigar puffing Baptist legend Charles Spurgeon. This sermon is titled Paul as Pattern Convert. It was given on August 14, 1914. It presents the argument that Paul's conversion is not the miraculous exception to testimonies but actually a pattern or picture of the essential parts of everyone's. This sermon centers around 1 Timothy 1:16. Enjoy and HOLD THE LINE!

Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast! Today we begin a multi-part series on apologetics called Apologetics at the Cross. We will be going through Apologetics at the Cross: An Introduction for Christian Witness by by Joshua D. Chatraw and Mark D. Allen. Today we have the introduction to this series, given by Kevin Richard. Kevin is a PhD from Liberty Univsersity in Apologetics and brings a wealth of wisdom and experience on our topic. He gives us an introduction to what apologetics is and where we find ourselves culturally and philosophically in America in 2020. The world view of today is much different than it was 100 years ago. Kevin introduces a term called plausibility structures to categorize and explain what is happening in our country. The average person (who is not religious) doesn't believe that there is a higher power that created the universe and instills it with value and purpose. They don't even believe this is plausible. How did this happen? Kevin answers that for us!

Cody and Ethan are back in the Podcast Bunker! A La Carte Christianity is the first installment on a series we are calling EVANGELICAL WASTELAND. We discuss the dire straights that the Evangelical Camp is going through and what you can do to be an agent of change. Today we discuss the Evangelical Wasteland and one of it's many problems...A La Carte Christianity. We had in mind to talk about the negatives of this movement but we ended up talking more about the value of being content in a church that is less than perfect (as all are).

In today's "guest sermon episode" we are posting part one of a mini sermon series from one of Cody's pastor's at Reston Bible Church titled "Conformed or Transformed: Discerning The Times As We Follow Jesus, pt 1".

"If you are a follower of Jesus, then you are not your own. He cannot be a nice addition on the structure of the lives that we have built. He needs to be the foundation of all." - Pastor Jim

I've known Pastor Jim Supp for years. He is a faithful Bible teacher and a true shepherd of God's flock. He currently serves as the Pastor of Fellowship Groups at Reston Bible Church, previously he served faithfully as the first campus Pastor of Mclean Bible Church Loudoun. God has led Jim and his family to RBC and we thank God for his insight and faithful biblical witness in his teaching, shepherding and in his personal walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We hope you are encouraged by this sermon!

Welcome back to another episode of the Shieldwall Podcast. Today we wanted to bring to you a guest episode in the form of sermon about Courage! We plan on posting more guest sermons from various pastors in our area, we hope your'e encouraged.

We all struggle with fears. But what if God designed fear to be used as tool to help reveal our faith? In today's guest episode Pastor Jason explains how Courage is not the absence of fear, but fearing the right thing in the right way. So, how does faith reveal fear? What does it mean to fear God? How does this give us courage? Find out today on today's episode.

Special thanks to Pastor Jason VanDorsten for allowing us to re-play his sermon. https://www.restonbible.org/sermons/courage-how-fear-reveals-faith/

This week we have a REPLAYYYYYYYYYY. One of our avid listeners said that Apathy in Men was one of his favorite episodes!! Enjoy.

On today's episode the guys talk about Apathy in Men and the biblical response.

Apathy is commonly defined as emotionlessness, or a reduction in both positive and negative emotions. It’s more than just a moments lack of care but rather a pervasive, lasting mood or outlook. Apathy is the disposition of dismissal or reluctance towards a particular idea, person, or group, often experienced as a lack of emotion or interest.

Apathy is not laziness and it’s not reserved to people who are diagnosed with depression. Generally speaking, apathy seems to dig itself into the core of your being and the only feeling your left with is that you don’t feel engaged with life in the same way that you used to be or that your peers are.Meaninglessness

Apathy is disengagement emotionally from a variety of aspects of life; social, family, work, church, which leads to some serious negatives effects in your brain structure and effects your long term mental physical and spiritual health.

Most concerning, apathy can get at the heart of how you think about your relationships and how you care for the people in your life, and even how you care for yourself. Apathy has a snow ball effect that can often start off with, “I don’t care” but easily leads to, “that doesn’t matter”. Apathy can be summarized in one pointed word, “Meh…”

Cures for the apathetic heart

Affirmation: 1 Cor 3:12-15, 1 Pet 1:7, 3:3; Isa 3:18-26

Rest: Mark 2:27; Matt 5:8 Proverbs 30:1-6; Psalm 51:10-12

Security: Zecg 2:8; Acts 17:29-34

WELCOME TO THE SHIELDWALL PODCAST!

Martin Luther said, “Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through music.”

Today we have Jeremiah McCann. He is a gifted musician and man of God. He is the co-founder of a local musical showcase called Coffee and Dreadnoughts as well as the band The Boutonnieres.

Today Cody and Jeremiah talk about his Christian story, growing up as a Pastors Kid, his musical endeavours, the Church, mental health, and his journey through some "church hurt" and so much more.

PS... Jeremiah will be back on the show later this summer and he will be with friends to talk about Coffee and Dreadnoughts!

Welcome to the Shieldwall Podcast!

Ethan meets up with Nic Lombardi. Nic is one of the planting members for the plant team Ethan is a part of. Nic and Ethan huddle in the Podcast Bunker away from all of the mega church pastors out there to discuss the church Nic is planting and how God has led him to this model. Nic had a rough ubringing and was saved as an adult in an unconventional church, devoid of the programs, shiny white toothed preachers, and multi-thousand member congregations.

Doctrine Matters. By that we mean healthy, sound, good biblical teaching matters to both the church and to the Christian. Today we start a new series where we address some weighy topics in an effort to give practical advice and encouragement to new and maturing disciples of Jesus Christ.

What does justification mean?

Today the boys gather virtually in the Podcast Bunker to talk about Church traditions. Ethan and Nate grew up with different church backgrounds but regardless of this they are no strangers to tradition. Everyone in the church has a tradition they follow, regardless of it you identify as non-denominational, Baptist, or just a "Bible believing" Christian. We shouldn't be ignorant of our traditions! Some are God glorifying, some are not. Regardless, we should be conscious about them! Question your traditions with scripture! Hope everyone enjoys!

When you hear the word, "worship" what comes to mind?

Music? Obedience? Rituals? Aesthetics?

We can get so focused on the experiential, the momentary, the temporal, and the outside fixtures of what we style or call worship that we often times lose focus on the subject of The Who and The What of worship (God Almighty). We've had two episodes on music and worship and we plan on doing more because the topic has many components that need to be addressed and talked out.

On today's episode we have Benjamin Rupe, the man behind the musical juggernaut known as Swingin Hammers. He helps answer this question. We are also joined by Pastor Kevin, a friend of the Shieldwall Podcast and a faithful servant who gives us pastoral insight on how a biblical view of worship shapes and frames the local churches understanding of discipleship.

During today's episode Benjamin and Pastor Kevin remind us what acceptable worship before a Holy God should entail and why giving God our whole lives isn't too much to ask for - in fact it's the most reasonable thing Christians can do! More than a song, more than a moment, God desires all of our lives to be aligned with His will.

We strongly encourage you to follow Benjamin's art and work as he demonstrates how to serve the Lord in this generation; through honest lyrics, brilliant music and with his life-work on display in pursuit of acceptable worship. Benjamin Rupe is Swingin Hammers and the Men of Shieldwall are thankful for his example of busting up the things that need busting and building up where the LORD is working.

Swingin Hammers releases a new single, "God of the Bible Belt" out on April 5th. You can follow Swingin Hammers on Facebook where Benjamin does a weekly "Live At Five" performance.

Find his music videos on YouTube, grab some coffee and enjoy his craft.

No two words have more defined a fast food restaurant business than, "My Pleasure." Six days a week you can hear those beautiful words as you leave your local Chick-fil-a. On today's episode Cody sits down with former US Marine Corp Pilot and current owner and operator Scott Payne, of the Purcellville, Virginia Chickfila. This is the same Chick-fil-a where the Shieldwall Bible Study holds their meetings and where Cody takes his family to enjoy The Original "Humble" Chicken Sandwich. Scott is "always faithful" ... to his family, to the LORD and and to the Chick-fil-a promise. You will hear what its like opening, running and maintaining excellent service from the perspective of a man truly out to serve you and your family "a meal filled with hospitality." Oh, and we also ask the question: Which is better? Chicken Stripes or Chicken Nuggets?

"Semper fi", Scott! Thank you for your service!... keep the promise and hold em accountable.

We would like to apologize for the audio problems this week. We are working some gremlins out of our recording system! Bear with us, our normal quality audio will return next week!

When you hear the word "worship" you may think of dated hymns or Hillsong. The Bible has a lot to say about Worship and praise. It has a lot to say about where we should direct our worship. Today the boys talk about what it means to worship, what it looks like to do it daily and what we shouldn't be worshipping.

Worship is the purpose of our lives as adopted children of God. Join us as we discuss!

Today Cody is joined in the studio by Nate Clancy. They answer the question why they love the Church. Churches are often so divided because of scandal or doctrinal disagreements. During times like these it is important to remember what the Church is for and what we love about Christ's body. It is difficult to love Christ and hate the Church, so Cody and Nate discuss what they love about it. Cody and Nate are men who have been hurt by the church as many have (See our Churchianity episode) but that doesn't stop them from offering grace and love for Christ's body. The Holy Spirit indwells individual Christians just like it indwelt the Temple. We are the Temple of God on Earth now. God hears our prayers and acts. The Holy Spirit is our intercessor. Christ is our mediator. We have confident access to the Father. Now what?

Cody, Ethan, Nate, and Seth all discuss some of the finer things about prayer - what it is, what its purpose is, how to pray, and the posture we take when we engage in prayer. This episode is filled with laughs, scripture, and practical examples of what happens (and even what doesn't happen) when men pray.

Christians are called to be a light in a dark and dying world; To be in the world but not of the world in order to seek and to save the lost - like Jesus. But sometimes Christians can huddle together into subcultures that shy away from anything worldly, and create unhealthy communities that focus on how good of a Christian you appear to be. This can result in entire congregations turning to legalistic moralism - failing to grasp the liberty of the gospel. This can go on for generations with deadly consequences. Today, we talk to a survivor. His face has been blurred to hide his identity ;)

Part 1 of 2 in our Series on Prayer

Today Ethan and Seth discuss the foundations of prayer. How can we approach the Holy God as sinful people? In short, with a mediator. In the Old Covenant men were mediators between God and Man and connected with God in the Temple. There were many mediators throughout history, the Prophets, Kings, and Priests of the Old Testament. These o mediators connect God and Man in a Temple. These mediators were leading up to the ultimate mediator Jesus Christ. Christ is how we connect with God, through his mediator-ship. We also discuss the New Covenant fulfillment of the the Temple. Is there a Temple of God in this age? Who is our mediator? Listen to find out!

Mawwiage! In today's age, marriage is the subject of much debate. Since it's institution, the Enemy has not only redefined marriage, but we've also lost sight of it's beautiful purpose. So, what is the purpose of this covenant almost as old as mankind? Is it merely a legal union to get a break on your taxes or does God consider it something greater?

Today, Ethan, Seth, and special guest Rev. Mike Dean discuss the purpose of marriage. Rev. Mike Dean is pastor of Living Water United Brethren in Christ Church in Winchester, VA and Emmaus Church in Berryville, VA. Pastor Dean is also a Biblical Counselor with 43 years of experience. He founded Small Voice Ministries where he uses his experience to help people seeking Godly advice in their marriages.

On today's episode the guys talk about Ligonier Ministries 2018 survey on what American Evangelicals believe in 2018: The State of Theology. (Click to review and take the survey for yourself.)

  • What do people believe about God, Jesus Christ, sin, and eternity? Ligonier’s State of Theology survey helps uncover the answers. That’s what we plan on discussing today.
  • Every two years, Ligonier takes the theological temperature of the United States to help Christians better understand today’s culture and equip the church with better insights for discipleship. As in 2014 and 2016, Ligonier commissioned a survey of three thousand Americans in partnership with LifeWay Research. Today, we will go over some of the key results from their 2018 survey.
  • This year’s survey both confirmed previous findings and brought some unexpected results. Year after year, Ligonier is capturing a snapshot of the increasing grip of relativism on our culture and deep confusion among evangelicals.

On today's episode the guys go over the topic of Bible Translations. Why are there so many different versions? How do we know which one to trust? Since there are so many to choose from which one is best for me?

  • Here are some general rules on what you should look for in the translation philosophy behind the bible you choose to use as your primary and secondary bible.
  • The translators should hold to a high view of the Bible; they should hold to the verbal plenary inspiration of scripture, the infallibility of scripture, the inerrancy of scripture, and that the scriptures are the everlasting words of God.
  • We must always honor God, because He breathed out the very words of the bible.
  • God spoke those words intentionally and with he chose them deliberate purpose.
  • We should do our best to honor the Word of God that has been handed down to us by the Apostles by way of the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
  • With any bible translation method, the translation should not result in a mere interpretation or a paraphrase.
  • The translations team should seek to stay as close as possible to the original manuscripts intent as they translate the text into a modern language.
  • The translators should strive to keep the literal words, the figures of speech and the sentences structures as accurate and as literal as possible, while at the same time making them readable and understandable.

On today's episode the guys discuss the biblical and historical doctrine of The Trinity.

We've included the Definition of the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D)

  • "Therefore, following the holy fathers, we all with one accord teach men to acknowledge one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at once complete in Godhead and complete in manhood, truly God and truly man, consisting also of a reasonable soul and body; of one substance with the Father as regards his Godhead, and at the same time of one substance with us as regards his manhood; like us in all respects, apart from sin; as regards his Godhead, begotten of the Father before the ages, but yet as regards his manhood begotten, for us men and for our salvation, of Mary the Virgin, the God-bearer; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, recognized in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation; the distinction of natures being in no way annulled by the union, but rather the characteristics of each nature being preserved and coming together to form one person and subsistence, not as parted or separated into two persons, but one and the same Son and Only-begotten God the Word, Lord Jesus Christ; even as the prophets from earliest times spoke of him, and our Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us, and the creed of the fathers has handed down to us."

On today's episode the guys discuss the origin of the Shieldwall ministry.

  • Shieldwall started in 2014 as a Bible study for young adult men in the Northern Virginia area. Meeting every Saturday morning at 9 am in various coffee shops, these young men were committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, prayer and the study of God’s Word. Those who are involved with our Bible studies seek renewal and reformation in their own hearts, homes, towns and churches.
  • We believe that Mankind was created by God to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever and that Mankind best understands how to do that by studying and applying the Word of God to his or her life. We believe that biblical faith in Jesus Christ is inherently doctrinal, practical and devotional.
  • We recognize and believe the time-tested Word of God to be our sufficient and final authority in all matters of faith and practice. In addition to that we believe and affirm the Apostle’s Creed, the 1689 Confession of Faith, and the New Hampshire Confession of Faith are faithful summaries of important biblical teachings.
  • We affirm the local Church is the primary source of discipleship and spiritual growth & all Christians should belong to one.
  • In 2017, sensing a call to encourage and strengthen the local church’s discipleship efforts, Shieldwall modified its reach and mission as a ministry to encourage and mobilize the local Church to make an impact in their own communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ from Sunday to Sunday.
  • In 2018 the leadership team started The Shieldwall Podcast... Welcome to the Wall!
