As human beings, thoughts are a normal and natural part of who we are, so rather than try to stop thinking, what would happen if we observe them with more distance and in a non-judgemental way.

We might think our "head" is in charge. However, have you ever found body having a reaction before your head has even had time to "think" about what's going on?
What if, rather than our head being in charge, we were a complex system, or a network of complex systems, of which our head was only a small part? And that our head wasn't in charge?
What might this make possible? In this episode, Stephen talks about the importance of our Autonomic Nervous System and how we've spent years conditioning it to respond automatically given certain circumstances.

Welcome to my world... and it's going to be different to your world!
This week’s self-reflective episode starts with a small question: “Is the digital world making us less human?” and goes from there!
I hope this episode leads to useful self-reflection on what being human might mean to you and how you might demonstrate more of your own humanity in this increasingly digital world!

Emotional Self-awareness is all about becoming aware of your own emotions and feelings, and becoming aware of the events and triggers associated with them. However, what happens when you reflect on the underlying needs that may, or may not, be met - is this what the emotion or feeling is trying to tell you?
We all have dreams and aspirations. However, are they dreams that you're doing something about or simply day dreams? And is it fear that might be holding you back? Fear of failure or even fear of success? Or fear or something else altogether!

In this interview edition, I got to spend time talking with Michael Cahill, a coach, trainer, facilitator and someone who’s gone on, and continues to travel on, a journey filled with curiosity, learning and understanding – not only about us as humans but also a deep exploration of himself. In this interview, we discover how Michael went from staring out as an equity analyst and then set off another journey. We covered a range of topics that went from different coaching modalities, coaching presence, our left and right hemispheres of our brain, the importance of what beliefs you’re holding about your client, the link between success and love, the unconscious mind and then a sprinkling of mBraining and a small touch on systemic work… and we still had lots more to talk about. Hopefully that might happen in a part 2, in the near future. So, grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy this wide ranging conversation – as I had over to Michael to introduce himself.

This episode is something very different. It's a voice guide for doing an activity called Balanced Breathing. Balanced breathing is where we focus on making our inhales and exhales of equal duration. Ideally aiming for breaths of 5-6 seconds in duration. When doing this activity, breath in and out through your nose. Aim to make your transitions from inhale to exhale as smooth and gentle as possible. Doing this for even a couple of minutes, causes our autonomic nervous system to reach a point of balance. This balance creates the optimal state for us tap into our head, heart and gut intelligences. If you’d like to know more about connecting in with your head, heart and gut intelligences, check out mBraining and work of the late Grant Soosalu.

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Sinclair. Tracy is an executive coach, coach trainer, coach mentor, coach supervisor and much much more! And if that wasn’t enough, Tracy also serves on global board of the ICF. In our conversation we talked about her own journey from working in the financial services industry by day, whilst supporting drug and alcohol addicts and their families as a counsellor at night; how she then discovered coaching; her own beliefs and thoughts around the potential for coaching to really impact societal change; right through to her writing a book that aims to bring the new ICF competencies to life – and much more!
I really enjoyed this interview. The depth, the richness and in some ways, how passionate Tracy is for the coaching profession. ‘Evangelic’ is a word that pops up during this interview; and it does seem very fitting.

This week’s reflective question is all about right now. If time is a constant, why does it seem to speed up and slow down all the time? And what about the present moment… not the past, not the future, but right now. What are you going to use this moment for?

This week I caught a cold and found it quite challenging to speak, wondering what sound, if any, would come out of my throat – but this got me thinking about times, when, it’s actually a really good idea to deliberately pause before taking action.

From Ireland to Dubai, PCC to MCC, developing mastery to AI, the evolution of coaching and the challenges of coaching in a multidenominational environment and much more... this episode really has it all! In this episode I had the pleasure of a face to face interview with Linda McLoughlin, coach, trainer and newly elected ICF global board director – and a great ambassador for our wonderful coaching profession.

This week I learned a valuable lesson – when recording an interview, make sure you’ve enough space left on your recording device. But this got me thinking. On my recording device, I had many hours of old recordings that I just hadn’t bothered clearing out – so my memory card became full with stuff that wasn’t useful anymore. Was this a metaphor for other stuff in my life?

Welcome to this week’s mini-episode and curiosity challenge is about reflecting on what you love and appreciate about yourself? As humans, we are truly amazing and complex. We have many wonderful qualities and gifts that we bring to the world – so this week’s reflective question is simply a way to help us realise just how amazing we truly are. We’re all really good at being our own self critics and identifying all the things don’t love about ourselves – so let’s take time instead to identify the things that we do love and appreciate about ourselves.

From banking to entertainment, a detour into HR consultancy, a brief period learning to make chocolate before starting her own business and becoming a coach. Valerie O’Hanlon is a life and career coach having founded her own company, Clarence Consulting back in 2014. She then qualified as a coach in 2015 and went on to win the ICF Ireland career coach of the year in 2016. I had the pleasure of talking with her recently to get her insights and advise for those just starting out on their own coaching journey.

In this episode I hear from three coaches, from three different parts of the world, on three different journeys into the world of professional coaching.
Josh Daniel is PCC credentialed coach with the ICF. He’s a career coach based Dallas in the USA who specialises in transitions, in particular helping army vets transition into careers after service.
Paula Sheridan recently graduated as a coach and has just launched her own coaching company called unwrapping potential.
María Marinaro Colonna is an experienced coach who recently moved from Venezuela to Spain and, despite having 18 years of experience, finds herself effectively having to start again and build a new business network.
Each of them shares their learnings, challenges and advice for others who are considering travelling a similar path. We cover a wide range of subjects such as the business aspects of coaching, finding your niche, being comfortable talking about money and how, marketing yourself and how, even with many years of coaching experience, you can still find yourself having to start again.
