Today, so many platforms facilitate what we call "online friendships," which include friendships made online and also friendships made in person and maintained online.

In discussing our experiences with online communities and friendships, we distinguish the content of a conversation from the chemistry of a conversation, and answer questions such as: 

• What Facebook groups have enabled us to make friends and maintain friendships?
• What is appealing about making friends online? about maintaining friendships online?
• What’s it like to meet “online friends" in person?
• What have we learned about friendship by maintaining online friendships?
