Eeek! It is my first solo episode. Jess will be joining us occasionally, but as she branches out to start her own business (please visit her at www.jessmcgun.com and @jessmcgun on IG), she is spending a lot of time focusing on her venture, so here I am, riding solo!

Turning a Hobby or Passion into a Side Hustle or Full Time Business * The reality is not everyone is meant to start a business and that is OK. (This post on the Beyond Boss Instagram was popular) + You do not need to own a business to be a boss. Full stop. + Do not compare yourself to on the internet and feel like a loser for going to your 9-5 paying into that 401k. + There is no shame in working full time or being at home with your kids. * Starting before you are “ready” because you will never fully be ready. * Making sure you are financially prepared. There are absolutely going to be sacrifices and risks along the way, but how much risk is too much risk for you and your family. Hire a tax professional. Seriously, just do it. * Be realistic about the time that it will take. You will not start a business and be an overnight success. It just does not happen that way. * Support system. You need one. Beyond your family, friends, and partner. Hire professionals. Hire a coach, hire a therapist.

So you started your business. It is a lot. Now what.

  • Set a schedule. Whether your gig is a full time business or a side hustle you are handling after your 9-5. Plan out your time. Your time is valuable.
  • Systems to make sure things get done and your client/customer is having great experiences, and you are finding some balance in your life.
  • Honestly, it just takes time and experience. You will stumble A LOT. But you will learn how to answer to yourself, how to manage your time, and how to earn your "freedom"
  • Be prepared to fail. It happens. But babies don't just start walking one day. They get up, they fall, they cry, and they do it all over again.
  • Therapist and business coaches are not for people who are lost and stuck. Get them. Pay them for their experience. Get a mentor.. You need to having sounding boards that are not just your partner.
  • Speaking of which, making sure you are on the same page as your partner because it can be tough. Communicate about expectations!

Conclusion.

  • Not everyone NEEDS to start a business. Not everyone should.
  • If you are waiting for the right time, that isn’t going to happen.
    • So are you fearful or smart?
  • Prepare financially. Be realistic about goals.
  • How much time is this/will this really take?
  • Support system.
  • SCHEDULE AND SYSTEMS
  • Be prepared to fail and look dumb. Some people won't get it. Some people will think you look silly. Those are not your people.
  • Get a coach. Get a mentor. Do the work.
  • Hang in there. xoxo
