Having looked into the background and at the prototype, we now come to the only passage in the NT that discusses deacons in any specific way. Though they are charged with serving a local church, Paul’s list of qualities for them are similar (though not identical) to those required of shepherds. In both there is a clear emphasis placed on spiritual quality.
