A paradox is a statement or situation that appears contradictory, yet both elements are not only valid, but reveals a deeper truth. Christianity is marked by several of them and in this passage Paul focuses on three. What Paul’s opponents pointed to as disqualifiers of his apostleship, he lists here as his credentials. These things were not only vital to Paul’s effectiveness in the 1st century, but they’re essential to ours in the 21st as well.
