A business coaching client stays with a new coach, on average, around four months. Some clients will work with you for longer, depending on a few things, such as the system you are using, but most will move on after a short period. Why is this? And, how do you stop it from happening to your coaching business? One of the major issues I have recognized over the years is what I call identity failure. As a coach, we must recognize that clients have an identity or a role they identify with and behaviors and habits that go with that. If you choose to fix a specific circumstance and don't change how they look at themselves or how they can identify with their new role, all you do is frustrate them and you will be unable to build a long-term coaching relationship.

Today, I reveal why many clients only work with a coach for a few months and the two reasons most people think these coaching relationships don't work long-term. I share what I have noticed over the years about identity failure and how it occurs among business coaching clients. I highlight why working on a client's role and identity is essential and how you can help them transition to their new role successfully. I also share how you can build effective relationships with your clients to keep them past the first few months and into a long-term coaching connection with you.

“When we as coaches come in and we help them change the environment and change the results they are getting, we need to make sure that we also are addressing the person, the identity and the role that they are filling.” - Jos Willard
