The world is full of variables, and I grant you no two clients are the same. So when I ask a coach a simple question such as 'What is the biggest advantage of working with you?' and they fire back at me with 'Well, it depends' they could be forgiven for trying to include all of the variables each of their clients brings to a session. However, I'm not trying to get an answer about a particular client outcome per se, but rather asking if a coach knows their own practice goals clearly? Because if you as a coach know your purpose, your method, and your style, then the answer is clear, and we can lose the ambiguous “It Depends.”
In today's episode, I want to take a moment to grind some gears about my problem with “It Depends.” I explain why a coach who cannot give a definitive answer as to what their biggest client results are is a coach who does not know what they are good at and does not know what their coaching goals are. I discuss the problem with trying to make your target demographic too broad and why, you can't be everything to everyone. I also reveal the secret to successful marketing and why it's just as essential to repel certain clients as it is to attract the ones you know you will do your best work with.
"If you want to get booked solid with a steady flow of ideal clients that you will do your best work with, so they can get great results and then go rave to the rest of the world about how amazing the experience was so that it creates an even larger continual flow of more clients just like them, you can't say It Depends." – Jos Willard
"So many people, especially in the coaching world, think that the only way they're going to get enough clients to keep the doors open and pay the bills is to throw out a broad net." - Jos Willard
"Your marketing needs to actively repel people. I don't mean that it needs to insult people, or it needs to offend people, but your marketing needs to make very clear who is and who is not a good fit to work with you." – Jos Willard
"You need to get your marketing so targeted that everyone who comes to you from that market has pretty much the same problem. Or at least they identify it the same." – Jos Willard "Stop depending on It Depends. And instead get really, really clear, on exactly who you help and exactly what you help them do." – Jos Willard
