Trust is like a mirror. You can fix it when it's broken but you can still the cracks in the reflection. If you built trust with your employees, then there is a chance you can break it as well. But how can you regain that trust if you break it?
Today, I talk about how trust affects the performance of your employees. I explain why trust is so important, and provide an example of how easy it is to break that trust. I share some of the steps you can take to rebuild your employee's trust. I also note the different types of trust you have in the workplace.
“We have to train others to take our positions instead of seeing them as our competition. Using this approach to build competence shows the team that you trust them to do just as good a job as you.”
“Trust is more like a rubber band than a mirror. It can be stretched, sometimes to its limits, and not to go back in its original stretch.”
This week on the Engage Relate Perform Podcast:
● Why trust is important in a work environment
● What happens when you break your employee’s trust
● How to regain broken trust
● The role empathy and respect play when building trust
● Why you should invest in your team and allow others to grow

As we discussed last week, there are three key steps to training and strengthening your emotional intelligence as well as the emotional intelligence of others. Step two in the journey to improving your EQ is to take a good, hard look at your ability to be emotionally empathetic toward others. According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, emotional empathy is when you feel physically aligned with another person – as if their emotions are contagious. It’s when you feel a deeper connection with another person’s feelings.
This week, I explain what emotional empathy means and how it helps you improve your emotional intelligence. I discuss how emotional empathy helps us build deeper connections with the people around us and how asking your team to join a shared charity, cause, or community project can help strengthen their emotional empathy. I highlight how encouraging your team to spend time in less-formal, 1-to-1 settings focused on building their relationships with others can help improve their emotional empathy for the people they work with. I also explain why it’s essential for leaders to listen to their team members to understand their point of view regarding an issue or problem and how it can help you connect with them on a deeper level.
“Hold off on the judgment and be open to different ideas. We want to get an understanding of their emotional state, at that moment, and find a way to relate.” - Murtaza Versi

● How emotional empathy helps us build deeper connections with others

Do you believe it is possible to increase your own emotional intelligence? Is it possible to increase the EQ of others? According to Dr. Daniel Goleman, a person’s emotional intelligence is a malleable, trainable skill – unlike your IQ. He argues that a person could even train their emotional intelligence well beyond its natural levels.
So if EQ is a trainable skill, how can we work that skill like a muscle to build it up to that capacity?
In today’s episode, I explain what emotional intelligence is and discuss some of the key competencies of emotional intelligence. I explain how increasing your EQ can help you form better relationships. I explain what cognitive empathy is and share strategies you can use to improve it. I also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using cognitive empathy skills when negotiating with others.

The average business only hears from 4% of dissatisfied customers. So when you do hear from an irate customer, it's important to look at it as a golden opportunity to improve your services, prevent future complaints, and gain a loyal customer. This approach is not intuitive, but it's effective.
Today, I talk about how to react to an irate customer and why it's never productive or acceptable to simply yell back. I offer insight into the ideal mindset when engaging with irate customers, and I share eight steps for turning them into loyal ones.
"Remain calm. Do not try and match their anger levels. It is never okay to be rude to a customer."
This week on the Engage Relate Perform Podcast:● Why returning rudeness doesn't solve anything
● Why the customer's anger is not actually directed at you
● The presence of emotion in the encounter
● The power of sympathy, empathy, and listening

What do you perceive as superior customer service? When was the last time you entered a business and walked out thinking “Wow - they provide phenomenal customer service!” As we all know, many businesses and organizations tend to fall short when it comes to providing top-notch customer service – while for others, it seems as though it comes easily, or even naturally. So, what are the secret steps these companies are taking to ensure their employees consistently provide superior customer service?
Today, I discuss the 6 core elements of superior customer service and how you can apply each element into your current workplace and position. I discuss how your employees’ self-confidence and self-worth impacts the way they interact with customers. I explain the importance of teaching your employees how to provide caring communications when speaking with customers and why it’s critical to regularly practice habits of courtesy. I share how listening to the customer and doing what you say you’re going to do impacts how customers perceive your company and employees. I also explain how your employees’ knowledge and understanding of your company and the products or services it offers can sway your customer’s perception.

In his book Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World, Admiral William H. McRaven posits that making your bed in the morning can change the trajectory of your day, and in turn, your life.
Today, I talk about this idea. I expand on it, explaining why such a simple morning task has such a huge effect. I talk about the benefits of a morning routine, no matter how simple, and I note that these benefits affect your work-life balance, self care habits, general sense of accomplishment, and self-discipline.

“At the worst times...I sought value in myself through the eyes of God, because despite the fact that I’m unworthy and I’m a sinner, He thinks I’m worthy. And therefore, if that’s my benchmark, then nothing can touch me. Not even my own insecurity.”
“You have to give people grace. It’s not always easy, and I’m not saying that I always do that without moaning and groaning under my breath--because I do. But what’s paramount for me is that I remember; I am intentional.”

What’s the #1 reason employees have stopped learning? Studies show that this problem has a lot to do with the fact that they are too busy and feel like they don’t have the time.
Today, I talk about how managers and leaders can help remedy this problem. I offer five tips to encourage and cultivate constant growth and learning in your employees. I note the power of setting time aside to learn, offering easy access to learning resources, encouraging your employees to talk about and share what they’ve learned, incorporating informal and social learning, and asking for feedback from your employees.
“Managers need to remind their people that it is okay to focus on learning, at least in the beginning--and actually prioritize it.”

We need to laugh. Through laughter therapy, Ravin will make you laugh like you’ve never laughed before. The challenge is, he’ll do it without using humor, comedy, or jokes, but through laughter exercises.

Why do people have conflict? All sorts of things can lead to an unkind word or action that sparks passionate responses. But you may be surprised to hear that healthy teams aren’t afraid of conflict, and conflict leads to innovation.
Today, I talk about how to argue well within your team. I note the importance of hating the sin, not the sinner. I note that, win or lose, you’re all in the same boat. I also explain why you should focus on the work and move on once the argument is over. I note that conflict is inevitable and that the best thing is to get through it as quickly as possible. She discusses the impact of COVID 19 and shares the key challenges of leading in such a situation. She talks about what the pandemic has taught us about leadership during a crisis, noting the importance of admitting when you don’t know all the answers. She explores the difference between normal times and crises, discusses empowered leadership, and offers several takeaways for leading during a crisis.
“I think we have to acknowledge that no one has all the answers in a crisis.”

In 1992, I was a year into a job I loved, but I was beginning to burn out. Overwhelmed, I handed in my resignation, but my manager insisted that I go on a vacation and postpone my decision until after my return. That vacation changed my life.
Today, I talk about what I learned from my experience with this supportive and empowering manager. I share his wise words on the power of planning your work around your leave instead of the other way around. I note that, in large part thanks to that experience, I ended up staying with that company for 17 years.

Michael Hudson is currently the professor at Aspire Leadership, a business that delivers transformational leadership development programs to emerging leaders, equipping them to build, influence, and create impact by putting people first. During his 10 years in academia, Michael spearheaded 2 nationally recognized business programs: one at Cornell University and the other at the University of Illinois. He has helped 3,000 businesses, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies create their strategic visions and communicate them. Michael is committed to helping leaders unlock their true potential by using curiosity to drive growth, humility to build trust, and empathy to create connection.
Today, Michael joins me to talk about the three foundations of a successful leader: curiosity, humility, and empathy. We discuss the importance of preemptive curiosity and explain why a leader’s legacy is the leaders they leave behind. He talks about the need to get comfortable asking questions you don’t know the answer to, and he advises not to complicate asking questions. He explains why missteps are the path to solutions; notes that success is sequential, not simultaneous; and shares what we can learn from the tech industry about humility. He lists the three types of gaps he sees people encounter, notes that the individual and organization go hand in hand, and discusses the importance of learning to thrive in a world of change and uncertainty.
“Ask, listen, learn. And then serve.”

Often, it’s easy to have so many priorities that we lose focus and fulfill them all poorly. Setting a Widely Important Goal (WIG) is an alternate method of goal setting that results in more productivity, engagement, and commitment from your team.
Today, I go into what a WIG is and why you need to set one. I explain why end-of-year reviews tend to be unfair and why the WIG method is a fairer and more effective way to gauge your team’s productivity. I introduce the 4DX principle, and I note the importance of narrowing your focus and picking your battles. I explain why you shouldn’t dictate, and why each level of your organization needs to be allowed to define its WIGs. I note that the low-level WIGs need to be in line with the high-level WIGs. I talk about the importance of accountability across the board, and I emphasize that you need to follow through on your WIG despite competing priorities.
“Don’t be distracted by the lessor goals or be tempted to pursue multiple important goals. It isn’t possible.”

Today, I talk about resolutions and plans. I explain why many don’t stick and I offer solutions. I talk about the power of strategizing and stopping to take stock. I note the power of shorter-term goals, the benefits of journaling, and the importance of being comfortable with sacrifice.

I received a question from a listener: “How do I take criticism graciously and make it work in my favor? Is it so bad to defend myself when I’m wrongly perceived?”
Today, I address this question. I talk about the purpose of feedback, and I give the reasons why feedback often isn’t as effective as it should be. I note that, when you receive honest feedback, you need to act on it--even when you’re wrongly perceived--because it shows the customer that you’re far better than your worst moments.
“Let your action do the talking, because changed behavior is the best apology.”

We talk about the task of overseeing the digital transformation of your company and seeing your team through the COVID era--or even through the December-January period, which can have its effects on professional and personal lives. He shares his definition of a crisis, noting the term’s flexibility and sharing the four key things that leaders tend to forget in a crisis. We discuss the need for quick and confident decision-making, noting that it’s better to make mistakes than to avoid making decisions. He also expounds on the need for a culture of accountability.
“Think about growth, rise above the occasion, struggle within the occasion, and really show people that, indeed, a post-crisis world is very, very, important.”

Happy Independence Day! On this day in 1961 and 1962, Tanganyika gained her independence and became a republic, respectively. And as we honor Mwalimu Julius Nyerere for being the father of our nation, we can’t let the day pass without honoring the woman who played an equally great role: Bibi Titi Mohamed, the mother of our nation.
Today, I share Bibi Titi’s story. I talk about her background, recognize her heroic efforts and their effects, and share the lessons she teaches us about the qualities of a leader. These lessons include courage, particularly in a male-dominated world; confidence; a progressive approach and vision; the ability to inspire; strategic capabilities; and hope in the face of adversity.
“Women like Bibi Titi Mohamed walked so they could run. What progressive vision do you have for the people you lead?”

Ruth Shah-Wigley is the Managing Director and Principal Consultant of ARS IURA Consultancy Service Ltd. Her experience includes the application of key international frameworks, multi-stakeholders, and civil society initiatives. She possesses a breadth of specialized expertise in human rights matters, particularly in business and human rights, as well as women’s and children’s rights.
Today, Ruth joins me to talk about the power of attitude and adaptability. She breaks down these terms and shares the story of how she discovered their power. She talks about the importance of creating spaces for justice and discusses how her mindset has changed over the course of her career. We talk about the importance of endurance, and she shares how her faith acts as her support system. She notes the importance of being realistic, flexible, compassionate, and empathetic. She discusses the need to give people grace, and she explains why it’s more important to be intentional about trying than it is to succeed every single time. She notes the importance of considering other people’s wants as well as your own, and she talks about how and how not to express a belief, even when you know yourself to be right.

Today, I talk about the four common traps that successful leaders must avoid. I note the dangers of micromanagement, explaining why it leads to counterproductivity. I note the power of appreciating unique contributions, stressing the importance of catching people doing the right things instead of just the wrong things. I urge you to be proactive in problem-solving instead of waiting for problems to arise, and I note the power of sharing openly and the importance of not letting your insecurities overcome you.
“Someone is always watching you, how you behave. And if you are living your life problem to problem, micromanaging action and reaction, the team will follow suit and only work to put fires out instead of innovating.”

Rita Johansen is a conservation consultant who happily reminds people of the intricate relationship between man and nature, and the value of honing that relationship. She runs a food and beverage company that offers a healthy variety of refreshments and condiments that focus on replenishing probiotics and boosting immunity. In this episode, she joins us to share the joys of leadership in its three spheres: leading ourselves, leading our teams, and leading our businesses
Today, Rita joins me to share her story. She explains how events from her childhood brought her to where she is today, and she discusses self-improvement as garnering those things that spark a flame in you. She stresses the importance of doing what you love. We talk about why everyone is a leader, and she notes that leadership is not a magical, one-size-fits-all formula. She observes the power of maximizing the skills of each individual, she links motherhood to professional leadership, and she explains why a leader needs to be trusting.
“Those things that spark a flame in you, those things that give you joy--they’re there for a reason.”
“Work on yourself today so that you can be a blessing to others.”

Tenda Wema nenda zako. “Do good and be on your way.” This well-known Swahili saying is difficult to stomach; our natural tendency is to do good things with some level of expectation, and we rarely get the appreciation we feel we deserve. But in truth, somehow and in some way, we will always be rewarded.
Today, I talk about a man who embodied this saying: Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, first president of Tanzania and candidate for sainthood among Catholics. I explore his legacy, explaining why it lasts and breaking it into three parts: humility, developing people, and uniting people. I note that, despite his flaws, we can all agree that the sacrifices he made paid off and are greatly appreciated today.
“We speaking of engaging, relating. We speak of people. Let’s learn what we can do and do so today.”

John Tschohl is an internationally recognized strategy and customer service guru. He is the founder and president of the Service Quality Institute, the global leader in customer service. He has developed a complete line of learning systems and services to help organizations create a service culture, and his technology is used throughout the world. He has authored hundreds of articles on customer service and service strategy and is interviewed almost every week by television, radio, and newspapers from all over the world. Referred to by USA Today as a customer service guru, John is the author of 8 bestsellers including Relentless, which was released late last year. For the last 40 years, he has focused solely on customer service, longer than anyone else in the world.
Today, John joins us to share his extensive insights into the link between employee appreciation and customer satisfaction. He talks about the need to be relentless in your customer service training and lists the reasons why. He stresses that employee appreciation needs to happen daily, not occasionally, and he shares an analogy to explain why money alone is not enough to keep employees motivated and committed. We discuss what it means to have a service culture, and he lists nine steps for delivering one.
“If you don’t love your employees and you don’t tell them every day how much you love them, they’re not gonna be as productive as they can. Money only gets a guy in the door.”

Do you have to be extroverted to be a good leader? You might think the answer is obviously affirmative, but the truth is not so simple. Extroverts and introverts have different strengths and weakness that play into their ability to be a leader.
Today, I talk about research on the subject and what it actually means to be extroverted or introverted. I explore the plusses and minuses of each type of leader, and I note that there’s no such thing as a pure extrovert or introvert. I talk about what it takes to be a great leader, and I share tips for introverted leaders, as well as a couple for employees of introverted leaders. Finally, I emphasize that the extrovert-introvert dynamic is a matter of collaboration, not competition.
“Extroverts are more likely to be attracted to and selected for leadership roles, but they are not better leaders than introverts.”

Can your team say no to you? How easy is it to connect with you? Are you a source of inspiration for your team? Do you trust your team members, and do they trust you? Answering these questions and more are a way of measuring your trust value.
Today, I talk about why trust is a key value for your team and how to use it as a leadership metric. I note the importance and effect of saying what you mean and standing by it, and I discuss a leader’s need to welcome feedback. I talk about why the best way to get people to invest in you is to invest in them, and I explain the importance of letting your team know you value each member regardless of their title.
“Never forget that your team members are always watching you, taking cues from you. Take the opportunity to show them what trust in others really looks like.”
“A culture of trust is built by...leaders always saying what they mean and standing by it. In this kind of environment, people will follow such leaders to the moon and back based on their word alone.”

- Murtaza Versi
This week on the Engage Relate Perform Podcast:
● Why returning rudeness doesn't solve anything
● Why the customer's anger is not actually directed at you
● The presence of emotion in the encounter
● The power of sympathy, empathy, and listening
● Why you should thank the irate customer

How would you rate your ability to inspire those around you? This ability is what distinguishes exceptional leaders from the rest.
Today, I talk about the importance of this ability. I share research on the subject, and I offer four specific methods for developing it. I contrast telling your team what to do with engaging them to do what needs to be done for mutual benefit. I note the importance of understanding your needs, my needs, and our needs. I stress the need for transparency and a voice for everyone, and I talk about the importance of a common, integrated set of values.

I recently received a question from a listener: “When is it my place to show empathy?” Especially during the pandemic, it can be hard to know how much to expect from your team and how much empathy you can share with them without sacrificing performance too much.
Today, I talk about why the empathetic approach is generally the right approach. I talk about why you should be willing to work around the people on your team, and I note the importance of recognizing that we’re all human. I talk about the communication breakdowns that can occur between emotional and rational listeners, and I talk about the importance of listening to understand. I also note the value of compromise.

Elizabeth “Lizspire” Taylor is an Archbishop Tutu Fellow and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. She has enjoyed a multidisciplinary career, spending fifteen years in UK and Nigeria while being a hands-on coach, mentor, and speaker with a passion to help mid-career professionals set, live through, and accomplish their goals. She is a bibliophile, dog lover, and author many times over, as well as my colleague and friend.
Today, Elizabeth joins me to talk about true leadership. She shares the four steps to becoming a leader, and we discuss what it means to know yourself and what it means to be a leader. Elizabeth notes that time is meant to be invested, not spent, and explains why Elon Musk is a perfect example of this. She notes the importance of building good habits and the power of daily reflection. She explains that knowing yourself might appear different to different people, but at root, it’s the same for everyone. We discuss neuroplasticity and why strength lies in the unity of people with diverse skills. She notes the importance of holding yourself accountable, and we also discuss why we’re using social media badly and how to use it well. Finally, Elizabeth notes the importance of controlling your thoughts.
“The leader is not the one with the monopoly of strengths. The leader is the visionary. The leader is the director of strengths.”
“You need to understand that your life flows in the direction of your most dominant thoughts. What you think every day is what you will become.”

You might think the point of leadership is to win, but you’d only be half right. It’s important to win in business, but if that’s your primary or only goal, you’ll fall short as a leader.
Today, I share my definition of winning and contrast it with my definition of leadership. I share three key aspects of leadership. I discuss the importance of teamwork, the power of excellence, and why you should put your customers first. I end with a hard question and an invitation to reach out.
“Be honest. Be humble. Be helpful.”

With Fathers’ Day coming up, today’s episode of Engage Relate Perform is a Fathers’ Day special, in which I interview my son--Aliraza Versi--about what fatherhood means to him. This is an important question for this podcast because, after all, fatherhood is a type of leadership on so many levels.
Today, Aliraza and I talk about what it means to be a father. Aliraza shares, at my prompting, what he would have done differently as a father if he had been in my shoes. We discuss the importance of commitment and of monitoring your child’s behavior. We also look back on and evaluate our father-son relationship, and Aliraza stresses that there is always growth to be done.

Is the glass half empty or half full? Who cares? You have water. Today, I talk about why that--a focus on the good in a situation--is the most important thing.
In this episode, I talk about the importance not just of recognizing your many privileges, but of celebrating them. I explain what the reaction trap is and why you need to avoid it. Have you ever had a child? Remember your first time holding your child in your arms and everything that ran through your head and heart: joy, excitement, nervousness at the weight of the responsibility, relief, wonder that you got so lucky to hold it, and so much more.
Today, I talk about the ways in which waking up to a new day is a similar experience--or, it should be. I talk about the importance of cherishing and appreciating each new day like you cherish and appreciate a new baby. I note that no one wishes anything but the best for a new child, and I ask why we don’t have the same positive hope in the unknown future. I talk about the importance of enjoying each moment, just as you do with a new baby. Finally, I note the importance of an attitude of gratitude.

Often, it’s easy to have so many priorities that we lose focus and fulfill them all poorly. Setting a Widely Important Goal (WIG) is alternate method of goal setting that results in more productivity, engagement, and commitment from your team.

Daniel Kijo is a guy in love with the art of storytelling. For over a decade he has used digital media formats such as TV, News, and Film to help clients share their stories, communicate their brand mission, and increase profit through multimedia branding. Daniel's on- to off-camera relationships within the local and international production and broadcasting community has allowed him to assist individuals and companies across Africa to succeed in various capacities. A mixed martial artist, family man, and Pan African, he strives to live a full and balanced life. Whether interviewing leaders and policymakers or sweating as he takes his weekly runs with his children, he approaches both scenarios the same way: with a big smile and a positive attitude.
Today, Daniel joins me to share his story and purpose. He shares his experience with mixed martial arts and the lessons he’s learned from it that he now applies to other parts of his life. He notes the importance of self-discipline and shares how he tries to instill it in his children. He explains why you shouldn’t underestimate your subordinates’, or kids’, abilities. He talks about the importance of clear communication and the value of having a mentor and role model. He discusses the dangers of focusing too much on the end goal and introduces the 1% Rule. He offers insights on managing the downs in life and notes the importance of a good support system. He explains his belief that the shaping of leaders starts in the home, and he talks about the dangers of instant gratification. Finally, he urges listeners to take responsibility for their lives and not to give up.
“If you don’t improve and you think you know it all, that’s the moment you stop growing.”

We live in a culture of schedules. We schedule nearly everything we do, but do we carve out time to listen? Today, I talk about why you should.
In this episode, I talk about why most of your problems can be solved by listening. I offer statistics that illustrate the value of listening and explain why it’s the secret to success. I offer a personal story of how a leader who listened made a big difference in my life. I discuss what it actually means to listen and why it involves staying attuned to both verbal and nonverbal cues. I note that you should get rid of distractions and interruptions when you’re listening to someone, and I tell you where you can go to continue the conversation on listening.
