One of the most important decisions to make as an injured athlete is to choose your “team”, including choosing your physical therapist. This team can include many different people from skill coaches, to doctors, to physical therapists and sports psychologists. Many times within the medical field you are referred to a provider because it is convenient or there is a marketing agreement in place.

For example, a large health system or orthopedic group “sponsors” a high school or club team and provides an athletic trainer. That athletic trainer is often encouraged or required to refer athletes to that hospital’s orthopedic physicians with any injury. That doctor is typically then encouraged or required to refer out to that hospital’s physical therapy group.

But, as an athlete, is this in your best interest? Are you required to go to a physical therapist because you were referred there by a doctor?

Maybe, maybe not. There are 8 questions that will greatly help you in deciding how to choose your physical therapist and see if they are the right fit for you and your needs. I expand on these questions in much more detail in the podcast.

If you are an athlete or a parent of an athlete that is dealing with an injury, hopefully you find this information helpful! And you can use it to be an advocate for your own health and performance!

At Kinetic Sports Medicine and Performance we specialize in helping athletes return to play and maximize their performance. Learn more about our philosophy or schedule a free consult today.

Late stage ACL rehab and the return-to-play process from ACL rehab takes a team effort. The player and medical staff have been working together for 8-9 months, and the athlete is ready to start to be reintegrated into practice and game activities. At that point, the coach starts to play a key role in helping the athlete reintegrate into the team environment and prepare to return to game action.

However, coaches aren’t medical professionals, especially at the high school level. Coaches have many other responsibilities, and often, other full time jobs. So how would you, as their coach, know what to do with a player that is “cleared” to return to play following an ACL injury?

This podcast will help by discussing:

  • What the stages of return-to-play are
  • Why an athlete telling you they have been “cleared” is insufficient information (and what follow up questions you should ask)
  • How you can help an athlete during this late stage of their ACL rehabilitation
  • Why an athlete needs a gradual reintegration into practice and games
  • Concepts surrounding the medical and performance team
  • Resources for coaches

This is a great podcast for any coach that has an athlete coming back from an ACL injury (or another major injury). This is also a great listen if you are an athlete (or parent of an athlete) coming back from ACL surgery so that you can optimize your own rehab experience by knowing what to expect, how hard to be pushed, and when to scale it back.

We are both proud athletic trainers at heart that then went back to physical therapy school. We try to share our unique insight having both worked professional as certified athletic trainers prior to becoming physical therapists.

Specifically we cover:

  • The many hats athletic trainers have to wear
  • The difference in mindset from athletic training to physical therapy
  • Some of the major differences between the jobs
  • Some of the major similarities and overlap between the professions
  • How athletes should use both type of professionals to get the optimal outcome
  • How these two professions can work together to help provide the best care
  • Why every high school player should bring their high school athletic trainer a cookie

We hope this episode is helpful in clearing up some of the misunderstandings about these two professions. We hope it gives useful guidance to athletes and families on how to utilize these to great professions and finally, we hope it sheds some light on the differences for any high school students that are debating what they want to do when they grow up.

I have been thinking and talking about speed a lot in the clinic lately.

Personally, I have been speed training for golf this winter. Every golfer I work with has been asking about speed training as part of their rehab process or off season plan.

But outside of just golf, our baseball players have been working on improving throwing velocity and exit velocity as they prepare for winter showcases and the upcoming season.

We just spoke about the need to incorporate top end speed sprinting to soccer players as part of their hamstring injury prevention program.

It doesn’t matter what sport you play, speed is a key factor for improving performance.

So how do you get faster? In today's episode, I cover several different factors to getting faster, and some common mistakes we see people make when they work on speed.

  • How to manage fatigue
  • Why your sprints aren’t working
  • Scheduling speed training in your daily and weekly schedule
  • How skill impacts your speed

Goal setting is key for any person that wants to improve at performance, athletics, fitness or health and wellness. It is crucial to have a mix of outcome goals and process-oriented goals.

But what happens when you don’t reach your goals?

Did you fail?

Definitely not, as long as you learn what happened, why you missed your goals and use the “failure” to grow and hit your goals next year.

In this podcast episode, I walk through what I did when I missed my goal this year.

  • Step 1: Debrief on what happened
  • Step 2: Gather data to build a better plan
  • Step 3: Learn from mistakes and set new goals for next year
  • Step 4: Execute

I go into much more detail about what specifically I learned from my “failure” this year and what I’m going to change going into next year.

P.S. One of the biggest issues for achieving my goal was an injury. If you are dealing with pain or injury that is holding you back from reaching your goals, I’d love to chat. In this episode hosted by Dr. Lauren, we are talking with Dr. Michael about shoulder instability rehabilitation. Hopefully you have had the opportunity to listen to our previous podcast with Dr. Chris Kilian about the medical management of shoulder instability, but for this episode we are going to take a deep dive into conservative (non-operative) and post-operative physical therapy for shoulder instability.

In today’s conversation, we specifically discuss:

  • Dr. Michael’s recent experience when he dislocated his shoulder, and how he chose to rehabilitate it
  • Why someone might choose physical therapy versus operative management for an unstable shoulder
  • Things you can expect with non-operative management for shoulder instability
  • What non-operative and post-operative physical therapy might “look like”
  • What does end-stage rehab or preparing to return to the “field” look like, especially for contact athletes
  • How to know you are ready to return to your sport or activities
  • What are some tests that can be done to assess your progress and readiness to return to sport
  • And some pearls of wisdom from Dr. Michael as he reflects on his injury and rehabilitation

This is a great episode that gives you the opportunity to have an insider's view of the rehab process for an unstable shoulder. A physical therapist going through his own rehab process hits different! I went through my first major injury rehab in about 20 years after recently dislocating my shoulder. It was the first major injury that I had the opportunity to “rehab” myself since going through physical therapy school.

In this episode, I want to share some of the lessons that I learned by going through the rehab process and injury. This podcast is not a detailed breakdown on how to recover from a shoulder dislocation (look for that episode in the future), but rather a big picture look at what I’ve learned going through the rehab process.

Specifically, I dive into:

  • How I dealt with the mental hurdles of getting injured
  • Tips to stay involved during an injury
  • How to fill your increased downtime
  • The importance of consistency in rehab
  • Keys to resuming your activities safely

This has been a very interesting process for me to go through and I hope that you can learn something from my experience that helps in your injury recovery!

Are you recovering from an injury? Schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation with me. I’d love to talk with you so I can learn more about your specific situation and help you get back to the sports and activities you love.

Today's episode is a solo episode with myself, Dr. Michael Falk, and I am going off on a bit of a rant about my profession in physical therapy and some of the things I have been experiencing.  Physical therapists are more than just a series of interventions for people trying to get back to an active lifestyle.  We are not just people that can do a soft tissue mobilization and massage.  We are a profession that is well trained to fully evaluate where you are and build a comprehensive plan to get you back to your activities.  We can all do better at our profession and I hope this episode strikes a cord with you in this profession.

On today's episode, I wanted to get the message across of how important habit and consistency are in training, rehab, your sports, and everyday life.  I have wanted to talk about this for a while and I did not know what format would be best but I finally decided that doing a podcast would be best for this.  Why am I talking about this particular subject?  I think these two things are two of the key performance indicators for success in any sport or rehab process.

I hope you found this information helpful, and I hope it triggers some of you to look at your life and try to find ways that you can build habits into your routine to help you achieve your goals.  Thank you for listening to this episode!

Welcome to the Milwaukee Sports Performance Podcast. I am your host Lauren Falk, and Jack Hackett joins us on today's episode. Jack was an exercise physiology major and a collegiate runner at Marquette university for four years, where he ran cross country and the distance events in track.

Following his time at Marquette, he continued to train and run professionally for a brief period before an injury kept him from going further. Beyond running, Jack has worked at Performance Running Outfitters as the sales and staff training director and recently started his own company, Infinity Run Co. We had a great conversation, and I think you all will enjoy it as much as we did!

Topics discussed with Jack today:

  • Jack's background and how he developed his love of running at an early age
  • What benefits can strength training help runners with how it affects their running economy
  • Jack's educated answer to the question of "What is the proper foot strike position?"
  • Why we measure running cadence and what does it all mean
  • The specificity of patient recovery and how we have learned methods of recovery do not have a real effect across the masses
