Do you have a million things inside your head and the only way to gather them is to make notes? Same here. It used to be referred to as a scatty brain, then a grasshopper mind, but now it's likely to be ADD or ADHD and, somehow, society seems to treat us better with that label.
Making notes to gather these thoughts is a hugely helpful resource that, I believe, writers should utilise.

It's amazing how much we need this hormone and neurotransmitter, and how much it helps us love what we do and helps us to continue doing it.
Okay, that sounds a bit grand. But think about it. Without loving what we do as writers, readers don't get their own dopamine hits by reading our stories.

S9E4 A Deep Dive enters the world of self-refection for the aim of working things out.
You know how sometimes we need to fulfil a task but our brain tells us, 'nope, not gonna happen'? I believe it uses the cover of procrastination but there's something from the past stopping us that is truly the issue.
Past stuff that hasn't been dealt with, or dealt with completely, can put a stopper on moving forwards professionally and personally. In this epi, I uncover so uncomfy truths about myself through self-analysis and suggest ways for you to do the same with the intention of clearing out our minds and getting the original task done.

An emotional meeting between Tim and James Angel that brings up baggage from the past.
Tim, Dale, and Jayne head for the USS Constitution to finally meet James and Tessa Angel.

Tim and Jayne patch things up. Jayne sets him a condition of their make up.
This is a bonus episode and one that contains occasional mild language
Tim and Dale try to work out what happened the night before, then Tim sets about an apology to Jayne.
Tim confesses what the problem is, and Jayne realises the situation is all down to her. A fight ensures between Dale and Tim.
Tim finally negotiates his way out of hospital and heads to Jayne's apartment - where Dale has spent the night.

Chapter 5 sees Tim's newest hospital visitor announcing herself as his sister; the half-sister he's never met nor known anything about.
She's insistent that he listens to her. There's the father she wants him to reunite with, and younger brother, Rick, to meet. And there's a time limit attached to the reunion too.

Chapter Four of Guardian Angel: The Journey Home.
Tim finally wakes up in hospital and sees Jayne, Dale, and his boss, Police Chief Redfern. Everyone wants to know what happened to get him into hospital in the first place. He's a level-headed guy, what happened to him?
Then there's the issues of whether he will be fit for work soon...And the doctor negotiates an overnight stay just to keep Tim in hospital.
And then he gets a surprise visit from someone who's about to change the course of his life. Things start hotting up for Tim Angel.

Tim has an out of body experience. Hallucinating, he sees his his mother and the grandmother who raised him. Eventually, he wakes up in hospital.

Welcome back to The Versatile Writer after a short hiatus.
I decided to separate the podcast into seasons of 8 episodes and today's episode marks the first with 4 bonus epis in this particular season. Season 4, therefore, is me narrating the sequel to Guardian Angel, a crime thriller self published back in 2006/. This book is out of print now, but you can hear the first story and its sequel exclusively via this podcast.
First, a bit of context: Detective Tim Angel works with his partner Detective Dale Faulkner at the Boston Police Department, Massachusetts, US. Tim's girlfriend is crime writer Jayne Murray who both Tim and Dale met while she was a passenger in 'drive-alongs' to gain insight into the seedier side of Boston for her next novel. Tim and Jayne hit it off, but due to Tim's upbringing - being raised by grandparents, and having a more traditional outlook than most modern men - it took a while for love to blossom. Dale, on the other hand, has a reputation with women that Tim doesn't like, but overlooks. After all, their personal life is quite separate from their day job. Until now...
Following on from the narration of Guardian Angel, the crime thriller I narrated in March 2021, the sequel, The Journey Home, follows Detective Tim Angel's very personal journey as he edges towards a nervous breakdown. After a very odd 'phone call, Tim discovers news that could send him over the edge. Refusing to let his friends support him, Tim learns about his father's decisions to abandon 6 year old Tim after the death of his mother.
Lastly, thank you for sticking with TVW during its hiatus and reframing of formats. I hope you enjoy this story. Here's chapter 1. :)

Every time we write a book, whether that's a novel or non-fiction, so much goes into it; even more when we self publish it. Add to that the mental health aspects that go along with it. The fear, the anguish, the anxiety, the self-doubt. Writers really do put themselves through the mill!

After a short hiatus, TVW is back and, in this episode, talking stress.
Stress comes at us in all different shapes and sizes. For me, this time it came in the form of 'inability to cope with tech'.
Talking mental health, anxiety, and stress in the workplace - whether that workplace is in an office with others, in a factory or bank, or in your back room because you're self employed - stress is stress. It won't just go away, but having a break from it can help your mind cope with it better when you do come back.

Just because we've begun a new year, it doesn't mean we have to have a resolution. Yet taking on the idea of a resolution feels like we are at least trying to be proactive.
Some of us try every year to create a better version of ourselves yet, by February, the challenge proved too much to deal with and we just couldn't succeed. It might have been because something came up, the bleak weather bringing us down, or grumpy people surrounding us stopping our motivation. It might even be that the novelty wore off and we just could not be bothered to continue.
But what if we found another way to challenge ourselves that actually worked with us not against us?
The Versatile Writer provides a potential answer, and another way of looking at resolutions.

When several things add up and pressure turns into stress, something not that great happens.
This week, taking on board the themes of previous weeks' podcast episodes, including Procrastination, Obsession and Self-Doubt, I reflect on my previous month's writing experiences and take myself down to a basic level to discover what's gone wrong inside my mind - then attempt to rebuild myself afterwards.
I consider the ups - including Titan Books' TV Tie-In Firefly created by Joss Whedon, with novels written by James Lovegrove, and the downs - my dislike for I.T., and the effects it's had on me recently.
A self therapy-like episode, that hopefully speaks to you and your own writing situation. Finally, keeping in mind that vulnerability = strength.
While obsession may get a negative rap from the media and society, it is often a big part of the lives of Creatives. How else can you achieve what is needed in life and business?
I look at some of my own obsessions, those that are probably some of yours too - especially if you enjoy writing, crafting, reading, tv and movies.
You know when you choose to watch TV rather than do the housework? Or when you play video games sooner than mow the lawn? That's procrastination. We procrastinate when we put off the thing we ought to be doing in favour of the thing we find more interesting or entertaining. That's what this week's episode is about, and while I'm considering my own situation, I'm betting a lot of it relates to your situation too.

Those books are The Ancestor, a genre-blender by Lee Matthew Goldberg and Life Beyond The Castanets, a travel memoir by Jean Roberts.

Have you ever noticed that if a business advertises themselves, some of us are turned on enough to buy the product, but if an individual does the same, it's called bragging and we're turned off? This week, in a micro episode of around seven minutes, I look deeper into this scenario, taking examples from long-ago school days and our current social media platforms.
In our creative writing, it is useful to have some kind of monitor for gauging our performance. it might be a set of tools, a tool (singular), or something else so we can see the progress we're making. If we see progress being made, it shows that we're learning and developing within our projects.
The one thing that can make or break your book to the buying eye is its cover. On one hand people could love it so much they don't even notice it and on the other hand reviewers can hate it so much they name and shame an author to the world. So, what to consider about that dreaded but oh-so-needed book cover.
While middles get looked at a lot in fiction, this week TVW looks at starts and endings. Starts have to be punchy, quick to entertain and garner interest, and endings need to be satisfying for the reader to invest their time - even if the ending moves towards a sequel.
When our minds just cannot conjure an idea to write about, we sometimes rely on writing prompts to help motivate our imagination. In this week's episode TVW considers finding those prompts in some unusual - and mundane - places.

Chapter 9. Between nerves taking over and a need to help the police catch the killer, Jayne suggests using herself as bait. Tim, however, has his own thoughts about that.
